The last Tuesday of the month means it's time for our previews of coming attractions, and to greet the first month with actual for-real blockbusters in a long time, Brennan is joined by Andrew Milne and Gavin McDowell. And while Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 are destined to be two of 2025's biggest box office successes, what the team really wants to do is go long on Hamnet, and the nature of making films about William Shakespeare's life and art. Those and other November releases are all covered in the episode, but before that happens, the trio shares their catastrophic picks for a movie roundtable: Gavin with the racist, sexist, and homophobic 1968 crime picture The Detective, Andrew with both parts of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon in their extra-length director's cut form, and Brennan with the brand-new comic disappointment Good Fortune.

And then when we noticed that the creator of the Final Destination franchise had also been partly responsible for the remake of follow-up Day of the Dead four years later, we decided to watch that one too. THE GREATEST SEQUELS NEVER MADE! Dive into the ultimate "what if" rabbit hole with Reel Rejects' Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau as they unpack cancelled sequels and unmade movies that could've rewritten Hollywood history! From Kylo Ren's scrapped Star Wars solo film and David Fincher's dark Star Wars vision to epic follow-ups like Alita: Battle Angel 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Andrew Garfield's Sinister Six showdown, and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 featuring Vulture and Anne Hathaway's Black Cat— these abandoned movie sequels had killer plots, A-list talent, and game-changing concepts that got shelved for good (or bad) reasons. In this unmade movies deep dive, we break down Darren Aronofsky's gritty Batman: Year One, Neill Blomkamp's District 10, Dredd 2 with Judge Death, Edge of Tomorrow 2: Live Die Repeat and Repeat, the terrifying E.T. 2: Nocturnal Fears, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, The Godfather Part IV with Leo DiCaprio as young Sonny, Gremlins 3 in Vegas, Joel Schumacher's Batman Unchained, the wild Jurassic Park 4 dino-human hybrids, Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 3, Man of Steel 2 with Brainiac and Supergirl, the original Matrix 4 pitch, The Nice Guys 2, Roger Rabbit 2: Who Discovered Roger Rabbit, Tim Burton's Batman 3, Tim Miller's Deadpool 2, David Fincher's World War Z 2, and Zack Snyder's Justice League sequels complete with Darkseid, Knightmare timelines, and a Bruce Kent epilogue! Frank Miller is regarded as one of the most influential and awarded creators. He began his career in comics in the late 1970s, first gaining notoriety as the artist, and later writer, of Daredevil for Marvel Comics. Next, came the science-fiction samurai drama Ronin, followed by the groundbreaking Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One with artist David Mazzuchelli. Following these seminal works, Miller fulfilled a lifelong dream by doing an all-out crime series, Sin City, which spawned two blockbuster films that he co-directed with Robert Rodriguez. Miller's multi-award-winning graphic novel 300 was also adapted into a highly successful film by Zack Snyder. His upcoming memoir, Push the Wall: My Life, Writing, Drawing, and the Art of Storytelling, is now available for pre-order.This episode is brought to you by: Eight Sleep Pod Cover 5 sleeping solution for dynamic cooling and heating: EightSleep.com/Tim (use code TIM to get $350 off your very own Pod 5 Ultra.)Shopify global commerce platform, providing tools to start, grow, market, and manage a retail business: https://shopify.com/tim (one-dollar-per-month trial period)AG1 all-in-one nutritional supplement: DrinkAG1.com/Tim (1-year supply of Vitamin D (and 5 free AG1 travel packs) with your first subscription purchase.)Timestamps:[00:00:00] Start.[00:02:14] Aristotle's definition of happiness: Devotion to excellence.[00:03:02] Tools of the trade: Blackwing pencils, India ink, liquid frisket.[00:04:45] Sin City‘s physical creation at “twice up” size.[00:08:06] The toothbrush spatter technique.[00:09:24] Channeling impatience, anger, and violence into dramatic creative work.[00:10:33] What Jack Kirby knew about making comics competitive with cinema's spectacle.[00:11:56] Will Eisner and The Spirit‘s influence on the US market where writer-artist duality is rare.[00:13:33] How Jack Kirby blasted apart the panel grid (and a young Frank's mind).[00:15:49] Push the wall and defy the code.[00:19:54] The ruthless mentorship of Neal Adams.[00:24:57] The genesis of the Elektra amd Daredevil “soap opera.”[00:27:56] Story structure: Start late, end early.[00:29:10] Trusting the muse over rigid methodology.[00:31:15] European invasion: Moebius and Forbidden Planet.[00:32:52] Japanese influence: Lone Wolf and Cub‘s impact.[00:34:30] Cultural differences in depicting violence and motion.[00:36:38] Ronin: Shameless imitation and rebirth.[00:37:28] How does Frank know if something is working (or not working)?[00:39:27] The critical reception of Ronin as a “broken nose.”[00:42:37] The ruthless structure of The Dark Knight Returns.[00:43:40] Mutual elevation with “smartest fan” Alan Moore.[00:48:26] Robert Rodriguez: Angel of goodwill and generosity.[00:49:28] Sin City film: Co-directing and the Director's Guild sacrifice.[00:50:31] Working as a “two-headed beast” with Rodriguez.[00:55:27] Favorite films.[00:58:19] Books and ancient history inspiring 300.[00:59:00] Hollywood lessons: The importance of working with the right people.[01:01:13] The partnership and guidance of Silenn Thomas.[01:02:01] The clarity and creative rejuvenation of getting sober from alcohol.[01:04:48] Advice for aspiring comic artists: Story, story, story.[01:06:20] Learning to draw: Bridgman and Loomis books.[01:08:07] Perspective as a mathematical trick and lie.[01:11:00] Dick Giordano's advice: Lay in blacks first.[01:13:52] Sin City workflow innovation: Batch processing stages.[01:15:48] Dark Horse Comics and creative freedom.[01:17:29] Economy of line work and elegant minimalism.[01:20:46] On collaborating with Bill Sienkiewicz on Elektra.[01:25:20] Billboard wisdom: “Ask every question,” and “Why?”[01:27:08] Challenging pathological conformity.[01:27:39] Parting thoughts and where to find Frank's work.*For show notes and past guests on The Tim Ferriss Show, please visit tim.blog/podcast.For deals from sponsors of The Tim Ferriss Show, please visit tim.blog/podcast-sponsorsSign up for Tim's email newsletter (5-Bullet Friday) at tim.blog/friday.For transcripts of episodes, go to tim.blog/transcripts.Discover Tim's books: tim.blog/books.Follow Tim:Twitter: twitter.com/tferriss Instagram: instagram.com/timferrissYouTube: youtube.com/timferrissFacebook: facebook.com/timferriss LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/timferrissSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

“THIS… IS… EPISODE 300!” Join Ian, Liam, Megs & Kev as we hit a huge milestone with our 300th episode by reviewing Zack Snyder's visually explosive, slow-motion-soaked epic 300 (2006). Four hosts, six-packs optional, and absolutely no capes required — though Kev may or may not have shown up in one. This week we discuss: 300 episodes strong — how did we get here, and who yelled the loudest doing it? How 300 redefined the look of early-2000s cinema and became the blueprint for a decade of digital epics. Is 300 the natural endpoint of a cinematic obsession with masculinity that began with Braveheart and Gladiator? Just exactly how much does this movie borrow from these films and which elements does it outright steal How the film balances mythic masculinity with questionable historical accuracy — and does it matter? Megs is here to give us some historically accurate statements on the battle of Thermopylae We've got a classic BFE taste test of a product you won't believe Several people reach out to congratulate us and some familiar voices show up to toast with us  Which one of us would make the best Spartan, and which one would be sent to tell the story? The surprising cultural impact of “This is Sparta!” — and which line from the movie we've all been yelling at each other for days. Ian breaks down the film's visual language and pacing — why Snyder's comic-book literalism both elevates and limits the story. And finally, whether 300 is the Best Film Ever—or just the most gloriously sweaty milestone we could've picked. “I'm here, just taking a stroll, stretching my legs. These, uh, 300 men are my personal bodyguard.” We watched “300,” directed by Zack Snyder, and we need to hit the gym. A lot has been said of Snyder's hyperfixation on the male form, and we're here to add to that conversation. While this movie may be 117 minutes of fit men strutting around in leather briefs, it's also a pretty fun adaptation of the 1998 graphic novel by Frank Miller— author of Sin City.  Gerard Butler and Lena Headey play a fierce power couple, King and Queen of Sparta, Leonidas and Gorgo. Gerry is giving us manic Brian Blessed in “Flash Gordon” realness, and Lena is serving proto-Cersei Lannister, and she's really holding her own as one of the only female speaking roles in the male-dominated movie. We also get some body beautiful from David Wenham, Michael Fassbender, and Rodrigo Santoro as the diva herself— Xerxes, the mad god-king of Persia with permanent makeup and one too many body piercings. We had our reading glasses on the entire time on patrol for any slip-ups in those banana hammocks, but as far as we could tell, there were no wardrobe malfunctions to speak of. Oh well.  www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson react to The Flash (2023), the DCEU's highly anticipated sci-fi action blockbuster directed by Andy Muschietti (It, Mama). Ezra Miller (Fantastic Beasts, Perks of Being a Wallflower) stars as Barry Allen aka The Flash, who uses his speed to travel back in time to prevent his mother's murder—only to unravel the multiverse and trigger dangerous consequences. The film features Michael Keaton (Batman 1989, Birdman) returning as Bruce Wayne / Batman in an iconic comeback, alongside Ben Affleck (Justice League, Argo) reprising his version of the Dark Knight. Sasha Calle (The Young and the Restless) makes her debut as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl, bringing fresh energy to the Superman legacy. Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Take Shelter) returns as General Zod in a fierce showdown, joined by Antje Traue (Man of Steel) as Faora-Ul. Kiersey Clemons (Dope, Zack Snyder's Justice League) plays Iris West, Barry's love interest, while Maribel Verdú (Y Tu Mamá También) portrays Nora Allen, and Ron Livingston (Office Space) takes on the role of Henry Allen. Standout and highly searched moments include The Flash's multiverse collisions, Michael Keaton's return with the legendary line “I'm Batman,” the epic Supergirl vs. Zod battles, emotional family reunions between Barry and his parents, and shocking multiverse cameos that thrilled DC fans. Combining time travel, heart, and jaw-dropping superhero spectacle, The Flash stands as both a tribute to the DCEU and a love letter to DC history. Zack Snyder's adaptation of the Frank Miller comic book loosely based on events of the Graeco-Persian war written by the Greek historian Herodotus.  Told as a fireside tale from a spartan warrior. Check our gravitational force, bitches! Welcome back to The Rewatch Party. This week, we go big blue and get loud, as it's knives out time for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. We're talking about the World Engines, musty atmospheres, and an opening five minutes that somehow turns Krypton into a thirst joke. We dive deep into the film that changed everything for the DC universe, and we don't pull any punches. Do we name-check James Gunn's Superman a non-zero amount of times? Yes. Is Henry Cavill's torso treated like a national monument? Yes. We also get into the real MVP of the film: the town of Sandwich, Illinois. Also on the menu: Kal-El as space Moses and helpful tips about thumbs as a measurement system. We roast Snyder, pitch a “Lawrence Fishburn” seafood restaurant, and get into the real controversy: a neck snap while the main fight scene likely killed half a city. It's a "Lawrence Fishburn" seafood-joint pitch that somehow becomes the dream. It's a spicy one, so come for the chaos, stay for the punchlines, and maybe a new restaurant concept. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/

We investigate Zack Snyder's 2013 Superman origin film Man of Steel, comparing it with the new 2025 Superman movie and reflecting on how its controversial approach continues to influence superhero films a decade later.• Krypton sequences featuring Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon stand as the film's strongest segments• Flashback structure feels disjointed and lacks clear purpose or emotional throughline• Kevin Costner's tornado death scene remains controversial and doesn't make logical sense• The massive destruction of Metropolis during the climactic battle set a precedent superhero films still react against• Henry Cavill never got the opportunity to show Superman's hopeful, optimistic side• General Zod provides a compelling villain with understandable motivations• The film's neck-snap ending needed more emotional aftermath to be effective• DC's rushed attempt to create a cinematic universe ultimately undermined what could have been a thoughtful trilogy• Animated Superman adaptations like "My Adventures with Superman" often capture the character better than live-actionLetterbox'd Synopsis: A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

This week on Comics and Chronic we're marking our milestone 300th episode with Zack Snyder's 300 based off the cult classic graphic novel by Frank Miller.  In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. Though certain death awaits the Spartans, their sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against their common enemy. We made it to episode 300 despite Cody's sabotage attempts at a comedy festival & Anthony's desire to change our name.  But first Jake learns how to correctly pronounce Bon Iver.  This movie is stacked with actors such as Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender, & others.  Is this movies ableist?  This is a dude's DUDE movie.  Men killing, sweaty CGI and, boobies, murder, blood, wolves, cripples everything a man needs to see to feel like a man.  Also gave rise to one of cinema's most famous lines:  “THIS IS SPARTA!”  This is easily o e of or if not Zack Snyder's best movie.  Some great fight scenes and cinematography even with the CGI.  It's also almost page for page the comic 300.  Could the Hot Boys have held the hot gates?  Where does 300 rank on Zack Snyder's movies with fans?  Anthony's childhood is similar to that of a boy's childhood in 300?  Did this movie destroy what the ideal male body should look like?  How does this movie age now that we're no longer hormonal teenage boys?  Tune in today for our milestone 300th episode!New episodes every THURSDAYFollow us on social media! We went to the theater to see James Gunn’s “Superman” (2025) and are back to report about the pleasant experience. Gunn sets a new direction for DC superheroes, and fans of Zack Snyder may want to look elsewhere. From Krypto the Superdog to a surprising squirrel save, from The Marvelous Miss Lane to that Elemento guy, we’ll break the whole thing down. Jason Snell with Tony Sindelar, Dan Moren, Shannon Sudderth, Chip Sudderth and Brian Warren.

[School of Movies 2025] This is a BIG one folks, the first major change in direction for silver screen DC comics adaptations since Nolan's Batman Begins in 2005 (though it has plenty of recent tonal forerunners to back it up, including Aquaman, Blue Beetle and the first Shazam! all of which we recommend seeing as well). This is what Warner Bros. were blushingly groping for in 2017 while trying to course-correct Zack Snyder's Justice League in the edit. But it isn't just a statement of intent for the future and a mission statement for potentially carving out a much more successful, crowd-pleasing cinematic universe, this is, first and foremost a GREAT superhero movie, bringing an even less-compromised version of Clark to the big screen than the classic Donner films. The red outerpants are back, bringing with them an unabashed joy at finally getting to be THIS version of itself, powered by phenomenally talented young stars and balancing humour with heart. The level of adulation and happiness we've seen exhibited over this one has been nourishing, and while there's plenty who have a bone to pick over decisions made within this flawed and messy movie I'd really like it to be the opposite of Snyder's take, and be a unifying rather than dividing force. So all are welcome, you don't have to agree with us, and maybe we can illuminate the qualities on show here in a way that helps some folks tentatively embrace Superman.
