He holds a Master of Laws from UZH.Lars Mangelsdorf is the co-founder and CCO at Yokoy, a spending management software company which enables companies to automate their expense and credit card processes using artificial intelligence. Yokoy was acquired by TravelPerk in 2025. Lars previously worked as Senior Account Executive at Beekeeper.Laurent Decrue is the co-founder of the moving company MOVU and the software company Holycode, and the former CEO at Bexio. Currently he is active as CFO and co-CEO at Holycode. He holds an MBA from the University of Basel and previously worked at DeinDeal.During their chat with Silvan, Tobias, Lars and Laurent shared their insights on how to scale your sales team from founder-led scales to a fully operational sales army. When asked about KPIs to track early on, they stressed the importance of AE efficiency (2 AEs bringing in 90% of your revenue is bad) and also talked about sales cycles: if your average deal size goes up by 200% but your sales cycle goes up by 400%, you're clearly doing something wrong.Laurent recalled a lesson he once learned from a fellow entrepreneur about how discounts, despite their attractively lower pricemark, ultimately signal that you're giving your customers the same product for less money, which insinuates that you were overcharging them before. Laurent's friend encouraged him to add additional free features for the same price, instead of lowering the price with discounts. Still on pricing, Lars shared that since some markets have a competitive price pressure, it may sometimes pay off to go into them with a lower pricing number and increase your price by 15% every year. It's easier to get people to pay more once you've already started to earn their trust. This will allow founders not only to branch out into different markets but also to ultimately increase their deal sizes.Another topic discussed during this episode was the old chicken and egg problem of whom to hire first: sales or marketing people? Here the guests held different opinions. Laurent said that because you need lead magnets first, you should hire marketing people before sales people. He added that your sales should go from founder-led, to hiring a couple of people to build a really great pipeline, to then hiring a larger number of salespeople. Lars, however, argued that doing sales first allows you to test whether there is a strong demand for your product in the market you're targeting, and whether your messaging is properly crafted. Finally, Tobias added that marketing is much less relevant for B2B businesses than it is for B2C, since you only need to reach a couple thousand people, as opposed to millions. When it comes to actually hiring salespeople, Tobias encouraged listeners to start hiring way earlier than necessary “in their head”, meaning that they should build relationships proactively (including with competitors) with the goal of later on acquiring great talent. This is especially important considering that the likelihood of making the wrong hires early on is very strong. He finished by sharing that founders should hire their sales team themselves, instead of outsourcing the job.The cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.io

Interviews from the expo area of the Dublin Tech Summit 2022 held in June 2022 at the RDS expo area in Dublin. Although the event had continued in a virtual format, the opportunity to network face-to-face was one that the 8,000 delegates relished. There was a palpable buzz in the exhibitor halls and hospitality spaces as the attendees digested some of the content of the keynote speakers, and looked to foster linkages with potential partners and investors. The weather obliged also which helped showcase the enduring appeal of Dublin as a location for technology events. There was also a strong social dimension to the event with the city centre meet-ups giving delegates the opportunity to network long into the night. There were several interesting Irish start-ups that caught our attention. Averil Power, co-founder of Gist, described the company's technology which helps companies repurpose long-format video. It helps revisit corporate content to increase engagement more fully. At the core of the technology is an AI algorithm which identifies the key points and creates a bespoke video. The company was among those who made it to the last five on the start-up main-stage competition. Power's sense of the DTS was that it did allow a good mix of meeting potential customers and investors. Another Irish start-up was recruitment specialists, Search Talent People. Established in 2019, they focus on tech companies‘ full hiring needs. Business Development manager Skai Morkeliunaite was of the view that AI, Cybersecurity and Automation were the sectors that were showing most promise at present. There was a very strong presence of international exhibitors at the event this year, testimony to its growing reputation on the European tech conference circuit. Among the exhibitors start-ups were to the fore. One such company is TravelPerk, headquartered in Barcelona. Chief Revenue Officer Jean-Christophe Taunay-Bucalo outlined that their technology allows individuals to bypass traditional corporate travel agencies. He was able to confirm that their systems were strongly orientated around corporate compliance; they had done Series D funding and achieved unicorn status – they had been extremely aggressive in acquisitions over Covid and had grown five times. They were also of the view of business travel was changing – people are traveling less than pre-covid but more people are traveling. While the overall travel costs remained the same what was evident was that companies are exchanging office costs for travel costs – bringing them together for team-building purposes rather than the traditional road warrior purposes. He also felt that events such as Dublin Tech Summit are changing considerably with a lot of focus now on networking with more tightly defined teams in attendance than heretofore. Mary-Rose Lyons, from Irish consulting company BrightSpark Consulting was the MC on the Horizon Stage over both days, and as such was well placed to give a reflection on the conference –she was of the view that Dublin was established in its tech-cred and an emerging eco-system. For her own business she has seen a switch from social media specific consulting to a more rounded strategic input to digital strategy. Among the first-time exhibitors this year was Guy Sear, Commercial Director of PayHawk – the first Bulgarian unicorn. This company helps management efficiency visibility and compliance in employee spend. One of the biggest problems remains visibility of spend and whether it's in compliance with policy. Their 3% paypack system was one that offered the potential for paying for itself for some clients. He said Ireland was a market they wanted to get into, and as an exhibitor the event facilitated this. Listen here to interviews with all the above mentioned companies.

Huw Slater is hugely passionate about technology that facilitates innovation and enhances both people's work and personal lives. Currently, he is COO at TravelPerk, a next-generation travel booking and management platform that is pioneering the future of corporate travel. Previously, Huw served as CFO at TravelPerk and Typeform, with a long career in finance, business, and technology. Huw has helped lead his company through the pandemic and into the new world of corporate collaboration and business travel. Through the use of strategic partnerships, TravelPerk is ensuring the future of travel is successfully supported by top-level technology. To be a successful CFO, Huw feels you need to do whatever you can to remove friction and extra effort when driving towards success. This requires that you bring in modern tools to help free up your team and employ people that can be creative and don't just follow standard processes. You need to be someone who over-indexes on being a leader, focusing on the company's goals first, and finding ways for your finance team to be as supportive as possible. Huw believes the job of any leader, and specifically the CFO, needs to be focused on gaining a return on investments. He says you need to run towards the flames and not stand back in the face of adversity. You should always strive to raise the bar, help set the direction, and ensure speed and efficiency. In this episode of The CFO Playbook, Huw talks about how over-communicating and transparency have benefited him as a leader. He explains why taking on hard tasks and surrounding yourself with great people will help you to be successful. In addition, he provides insight on his career path, navigating a company focused on travel when that was limited due to the pandemic, and how partnerships make companies strong and provide better services to customers. We encounter the term and concept of resilience in many aspects of life. People asked about how they'd define it, might say it is about one's ability to bend but not break, bounce back, and perhaps even grow in the face of disadvantageous or negative life experiences. The American Psychological Association (2014) defines resilience as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress.” Sure, this definition gives you the gist – but it does not reflect the complex nature of resilience and its biological, psychological, social and cultural factors that interact with one another: Just because one adapts well to stress in a workplace, this does not mean they also do so in their personal life. At work, especially New Work, resilience plays a major part – particularly relevant in our era. The Covid-19 pandemic we have been facing for almost two years completely turned our already rapidly changing world of work upside down. It gave New Work another digitalization boost. And even companies that had long opposed digital change had to resort to digital solutions. The pandemic obviously also had an impact on tourism. Which is what Tourism Resilience is about: an industry's need, to adapt to those current challenges. In economic jargon, self-reliance refers to the inward development of a country – meaning that it does not export raw materials but uses them in its own country. On an individual level, self-reliance is described by the Cambridge Dictionary as “the quality of not needing help or support from other people”. Therefore, self-reliance is the ability to rely on your own efforts, abilities, powers and resources, rather than that of those around you. Apart from an individual's or a country's, this can also be transferred to a company's self-reliance – which is what we especially want to focus on in this podcast.
Hi there and welcome back to the Flying Cat interview series! In this episode, we get the lowdown on the differences between B2B and B2C SEO from Marcos Sabino who heads up the SEO team at TravelPerk, a B2B business travel software. Originally from Portugal, Marcos recently transitioned from B2C e-commerce at Myprotein, a sports nutrition brand based in the UK, to B2B SaaS at TravelPerk in Barcelona. He explains how, while the basic principles of B2C and B2B SEO are similar, he's encountered big differences in terms of stakeholder involvement, keyword search volumes, and the number of websites he has to manage at a B2B SaaS company vs B2C e-commerce. He also outlines the practical implications of those differences when it comes to creating an SEO culture, managing stakeholders and expectations, doing keyword research, optimizing content, and getting results. And as if that wasn't enough, Marcos also gives us his take on keyword mining and why Google Search Console wins over third-party SEO tools any day when it comes to evaluating demand for “zero volume” keywords. He signs off with some insights into how TravelPerk ranks for localized searches and deals with the challenges of researching keywords and creating content in languages other than English.
