Can blockchain do more than make rich people argue on the internet? In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, Matt and Luigi sit down with Erai Beckmann, founder of Peace Through Trade, to talk about a much bigger use case for blockchain, AI, and cryptocurrency: global trade that creates trust, financial access, and maybe even less fighting between humans. Wild concept, apparently. Erai breaks down why trade has historically been one of the strongest tools for reducing conflict, how blockchain can open doors for people left out of traditional finance, and why Peace Through Trade is building a legal, sustainable Layer-1 Proof-of-Work blockchain with real-world use in mind.  The conversation covers regulation, energy use, stablecoins, government trust, environmental impact, and the giant gap between hype coins and technology built to last.

Why can't we farm rattan on industrial plantations like corn or palm oil? In this episode, we break down Southeast Asia's near-total geographic monopoly over natural rattan—a trade controlling roughly 90 percent of global supply. We examine the unique biology of this climbing palm, the grueling reality of its jungle harvest, and how modern logistics tech is reshaping a centuries-old material for the global market. The Old-Growth Dependency: Unlike standard agricultural crops, rattan is a vine-like climbing palm that requires the tall, complex canopy of primary rainforests to climb toward sunlight. Because it cannot grow in open fields or artificial lab environments, its production remains tethered entirely to pristine equatorial ecosystems. The High-Stakes Supply Chain: Sourcing rattan is anything but simple. The episode details the journey from dangerous, labor-intensive jungle harvests to the essential, time-sensitive moisture stabilization process required to prevent rot, mold, and warping before processing.Modern Supply Chain Pivots: To offset skyrocketing international shipping costs and carbon footprints, manufacturers are abandoning bulkier traditional builds in favor of innovative flat-pack design engineering.Blockchain & Ecological Integrity: Discover how top brands are adopting blockchain tracking to verify sustainable, ethical sourcing. By proving the origin of raw canes, traceability technology ensures that purchasing rattan directly incentivizes the preservation—rather than deforestation—of threatened tropical forests. The Big Takeaway: Rattan isn't just a design trend—it is a finite luxury material whose existence depends entirely on keeping old-growth rainforests standing.Read our blog post https://mondoro.com/the-rattan-monopoly-why-its-mainly-grown-in-southeast-asia/

Every blockchain today relies on replication techniques first developed in the 1980s by researchers who weren't thinking about cryptocurrencies at all. In this episode, Tim Roughgarden speaks with MIT professor and Turing Award winner Barbara Liskov, one of the pioneers of programming languages, fault tolerance, and distributed systems. Joined by a16z crypto research partner Ittai Abraham, they trace the evolution of ideas that now underpin modern blockchain networks. The conversation explores viewstamped replication, Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT), state machine replication, and why concepts developed decades before Bitcoin became the foundation for today's blockchain protocols. Along the way, Liskov reflects on the relationship between theory and practice, the importance of modularity and formal reasoning, and why AI is creating a new generation of systems research.   Resources: Follow Tim Roughgarden on X: https://x.com/Tim_Roughgarden Follow Ittai Abraham on X: https://x.com/ittaia Follow a16z Crypto on X: https://x.com/a16zcrypto Subscribe to The a16z Crypto Show: https://a16zcrypto.substack.com/subscribe/ Stay Updated:Find a16z on YouTube: YouTubeFind a16z on XFind a16z on LinkedInListen to the a16z Show on SpotifyListen to the a16z Show on Apple PodcastsFollow our host: https://twitter.com/eriktorenberg Please note that the content here is for informational purposes only; should NOT be taken as legal, business, tax, or investment advice or be used to evaluate any investment or security; and is not directed at any investors or potential investors in any a16z fund. a16z and its affiliates may maintain investments in the companies discussed. How Algorand Is Preparing Blockchain Infrastructure for the Quantum Threat.

    The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2026 42:14

What happens to blockchain networks, digital assets, and the wider internet when quantum computers become powerful enough to break the cryptography protecting them? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I speak with Bruno Martins, Chief Technology Officer of the Algorand Foundation, about what quantum computing means for blockchain security, why post-quantum cryptography is becoming a technology priority, and how enterprises should evaluate blockchain infrastructure for payments, digital assets, identity, and other business applications. Bruno brings experience from across several major blockchain ecosystems, including Consensys and IOHK, alongside a background in applied cryptography, key management systems, enterprise blockchain development, and software engineering. His perspective provides a useful view of how the blockchain industry has changed from experimental projects and speculative use cases toward platforms expected to support real financial transactions and business operations. We begin with the quantum threat itself. Bruno explains why the cryptographic systems protecting blockchains, financial infrastructure, communications, messaging platforms, and much of the internet could eventually become vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers.  While the exact timeline remains uncertain, he argues that waiting for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer to arrive before beginning migration would leave companies with too little time to update infrastructure, applications, wallets, accounts, and user behavior. The conversation examines why post-quantum security is not simply a future technology problem. Large digital ecosystems can take months or years to migrate, and businesses need time to understand their cryptographic dependencies, introduce new standards, educate users, and build systems capable of adopting new security methods without disrupting existing operations. Bruno shares how Algorand has been working on post-quantum security for several years, including the deployment of Falcon signatures for state proofs and plans to introduce quantum-resistant account types and additional protections across consensus and network communications. We discuss why cryptographic agility may be more important than simply replacing existing cryptography with newer algorithms that have not yet experienced decades of testing in real-world systems. This leads to one of the most valuable technical lessons in the episode. Moving directly from classical cryptography to post-quantum cryptography introduces its own risks because newer cryptographic methods may later reveal weaknesses. Bruno explains why hybrid approaches, where digital assets and accounts can be protected by both established and quantum-resistant cryptography, could provide a more responsible path for institutions managing long-lived systems and valuable assets. We also examine how enterprises should evaluate blockchain platforms. With thousands of networks competing for developers, users, and institutional adoption, Bruno argues that businesses need to look beyond market attention and transaction speed. Throughput, decentralization, security, programmability, finality, operational risk, and the ability to trust the state of a ledger all influence whether blockchain infrastructure is suitable for real business operations. Payments provide a practical example. Companies issuing payment products backed by stablecoins need confidence that transactions are final and cannot later be reorganized or reversed by the underlying network. Bruno explains why instant finality can reduce operational uncertainty and risk for companies building financial applications on public blockchain infrastructure. The conversation also turns to AI agents and agentic commerce. If autonomous software agents begin negotiating, purchasing services, exchanging value, and conducting transactions with other agents, they will need payment rails, identity systems, trusted counterparties, and ways to establish ownership and accountability. Bruno explains why stablecoins, digital identity, decentralized finance, and blockchain infrastructure could become increasingly relevant as AI systems begin participating directly in economic activity. Throughout the episode, Bruno offers a balanced assessment of the blockchain industry itself. He discusses the problems created by technical fragmentation, competing standards, thousands of networks, and ecosystem tribalism. Greater cooperation between blockchain communities, particularly around wallets, hardware, cryptographic standards, and post-quantum security, could make it easier for enterprises and developers to build applications that work across ecosystems. For technology leaders, security professionals, blockchain developers, and anyone responsible for long-lived digital infrastructure, this conversation provides a practical introduction to quantum threats, post-quantum cryptography, cryptographic agility, blockchain finality, stablecoins, and the technical questions companies should ask before choosing distributed infrastructure. The quantum threat may not arrive tomorrow, but migrating complex systems takes time. The companies and technology platforms preparing today will be in a much stronger position to protect digital assets, maintain trust, and continue operating when current cryptographic standards eventually need to change.

Australia's High Court has ruled that Block Earner's old Earner product was a financial product, giving crypto earn, yield and rewards providers a much clearer legal line to deal with. The episode explains why the ruling matters for Australian crypto users, why it does not mean crypto itself has been banned, and why products that promise passive returns may now need the right licences before operating in Australia.Peter breaks down how Block Earner's Earner product worked, why the court compared it to a bank-style deposit product, and what changed after all seven High Court judges agreed the product required a financial services licence. He also looks at the practical impact for users, platforms and smaller crypto companies that may face higher compliance costs or choose to leave the Australian market. The episode then separates custodial yield products from Cardano's native delegation model. Plain Cardano staking keeps ADA in the user's own wallet, does not pool custody with a stake pool operator, and appears to sit on the safer side of the legal line, while more complex staking services, guaranteed returns, liquid staking or pooled custody arrangements need proper legal advice.Chapters:0:00 Did Australia Ban Earn?1:06 Products Needing Licences2:12 Who Block Earner Was3:17 Labels Do Not Matter4:15 The High Court Ruling5:02 Block Earner Moved On5:31 Why Guardrails Matter7:32 Does ADA Staking Count?8:41 Cardano Delegation Difference9:55 Where Staking Gets Murky10:38 What It Means11:27 Wrap UpWhat you'll learn:- Australia's High Court ruled that Block Earner's old Earner product was a financial product because it let users seek a return and had derivative-like exposure to crypto prices.- Block Earner did not have the required financial services licence for Earner, but that product had already been shut down in 2022 before the case reached the High Court.- Block Earner has since moved to a regulated model and secured an Australian Credit Licence in May 2026 for its crypto-backed lending business.- Australian crypto platforms offering fixed earn, yield or rewards products may need licences, clearer risk disclosure and stronger compliance standards.- The ruling does not ban crypto, seize coins or automatically outlaw every staking arrangement; it targets products that take user funds and promise returns.- Cardano's native delegation model is materially different from custodial pooling because ADA remains in the user's wallet and never goes to the stake pool operator.- Stake pool operators and staking service providers should get proper legal advice, especially if they custody assets, pool funds, issue liquid staking tokens or guarantee returns.Links & References:Block Earner becomes the first crypto company in Australia to secure an Australian Credit Licence:- https://link.learncardano.io/4cBg4VAustralia's High Court backs regulator in Block Earner crypto yield case:- https://link.learncardano.io/8p3G4RASIC successful in High Court Block Earner appeal:- https://link.learncardano.io/JBZ86rAustralian Securities and Investments Commission v Web3 Ventures Pty Ltd:- https://link.learncardano.io/kVaKTwWebsite: https://link.learncardano.io/bQ68RcX/Twitter: https://link.learncardano.io/3a1QtvDisclaimer: This content is for educational purposes only. Four Africans living in Luxembourg share why the future of Africa-Europe capital is ownership, not aid, & the people structuring it are already in the room There is a moment in the conversation when Cheikh Ndiaye, a fund lawyer at Elvinger Hoss Prussen who was born and raised in Senegal, describes his job in one word: plumbing. He designs the structures that let capital move across borders, legally and at scale. It is an unglamorous metaphor for a profound idea, and it reframes everything the African diaspora in Luxembourg is trying to do. Around the studio table at RTL City sat four people whose journeys began in Cameroon, Algeria, Mauritania and Senegal, and converged in one of the world's largest fund centres. Burrel Ngatcha, founder of the African Luxembourg Community (ALC), brought them together. Sonia Brahmi runs a boutique tax advisory firm. Dr. Leila Kamara builds sustainable investment funds. What they share is a conviction that the old story about Africa and money has expired, and that they are the ones positioned to write the new one. Why all of Africa, not just the countries? Luxembourg holds roughly 700,000 inhabitants and an outsized share of the world's investment funds. Ngatcha arrived in 2023, joined Société Générale, and quickly noticed how hard it was to find people who shared a common history. So in May 2025 he launched a LinkedIn group. It has since grown into a network of more than 1,400 professionals. "Africa has 54 countries, from the north to the south, the east to the west. It was making sense for me to create something for all the continent, not only for Cameroon." Crucially, the ALC is not a closed door. Ngatcha is direct about who belongs: the point is not heritage but curiosity about the continent's dynamics. "It's not about being African who matters the most. It's about being conscious and curious about the dynamics that happen in Africa." The diaspora's real asset is proximity The sharpest idea of the conversation came from Ndiaye, who pushed back on the reflex to equate diaspora capital with remittances. Money sent home, he argued, is love, but it is not leverage. The leverage is something far rarer. "We're not standing outside of global finance. We are in the machinery, right here." There are people of African origin in Luxembourg structuring funds, running compliance and sitting on management committees who understand both European regulation and the reality back home. That double fluency, Ndiaye said, is the whole game. "The lever is turning that proximity into vehicles, people who can make an African asset legible to European capital and root it back as ownership, not aid." The numbers most investors are missing Ask anyone to picture African investment and they tend to picture risk. Ndiaye offered a corrective that should make any allocator pause: ten of the twenty fastest-growing economies in the world are African. He pointed to Niger growing at around 11 percent a year, precisely the kind of country most European investors would never consider. His point was not naivety about risk. It was that treating a continent of 54 distinct economies as a single block is itself the error, and that local knowledge is a competitive advantage hiding in plain sight. "If you have boots on the ground, if you know the country, there are a lot of opportunities. There are a lot of success stories, but you don't know them." Blockchain as a bridge, not a buzzword Brahmi, who grew up in a third-generation Algerian family in France and now works heavily in crypto and tax, made the case for digital assets as practical infrastructure rather than speculation. Banking access across much of Africa is expensive and slow, and the continent's many currencies complicate even neighbourly trade. Stablecoins, she argued, lower the friction. She and Ngatcha recently ran a conference on exactly this, titled Digital Assets Without Borders. Her argument is that transparency, not hype, is the real promise, since transactions on a public ledger can be tracked and proven in ways paper never could. "We don't need ink signatures, because everything is documented. It should lead to better governance in the end." Sustainability as a financial strategy Kamara relocated from Paris five years ago, having grown up in Mauritania, and recently founded Kamara Advisory after three years of doctoral research into socially responsible investment. Her conclusion reshaped her career: the real gap is not in avoiding heavy emitters but in financing their transition. That insight became NZiFund, a Net-Zero Innovation Fund built to channel capital toward green technology and toward the high-emitting companies that most need to change. Her framing rejects the idea that sustainability is a compliance cost. "We really need to support them in their transition, rather than divesting from them when we are practising sustainable investment." She is candid that climate finance has a long way to go, a view shared by the wider industry. Private money, she and the table agreed, is still far from where it needs to be, and de-risking it remains the central challenge. The thread that ties it together What emerges across these four stories is a single argument made four ways. Identity is something you choose and carry rather than something assigned to you. Africa is plural, not monolithic. And the diaspora's true value is that it sits inside the machinery of global capital while understanding the ground back home. At 29, Ngatcha has built that bridge faster than most. As Brahmi put it, watching her younger colleague work, the energy and commitment to bring African voices to a platform is rare. The conversation has moved decisively away from aid and toward ownership, and these are some of the people doing the plumbing. We're excited to share a special feed drop from The a16z Crypto Show. In the first episode of First Principles: The Scientific Roots of Blockchain Technology, Tim Roughgarden and Ittai Abraham trace the decades of computer science research that laid the foundation for modern blockchains. Long before Bitcoin, researchers were studying one of distributed computing's hardest challenges: how independent machines can reliably agree on a shared state, even when some participants are faulty or malicious. Bitcoin didn't invent that problem, but it introduced a breakthrough solution in a radically different, permissionless setting. The conversation explores Byzantine agreement, state machine replication, proof of work, proof of stake, Tendermint, Casper, DAG-based protocols, and why concepts developed decades ago continue to shape the design of today's fastest and most secure blockchain networks. The discussion explores why Monero remains uniquely positioned as practical digital cash, emphasizing its ease of use and its role in preserving personal liberty in an increasingly surveilled financial system. They argue that privacy technologies become increasingly valuable as society moves toward greater digital dependence and centralized control, making continued Monero education and grassroots adoption more important than ever.
