Kumite! Kumite! Kumite! David Rae of Quantum Kickflip returns to the show to Dux it out with Bloodsport. Together we cast aside an unnecessary military subplot and while making the Tanaka family ties to the fighting tournament much more explicit. Oh, and we also unpack the many lies of Frank Dux! Thanks for listening, and make sure to check out Season 4 of QK over at quantumkickflip.com!
Today we talk about Bloodsport!
In this week's episode, we are discussing what is regularly bandied about as a slasher classic: the 1979 film "When a Stranger Calls." Special topics for your consideration include: being a cute little baby koala, distinctive art, not letting women do their goddamn jobs, and fantastic mustaches. Want to hear us talk about another slasher classic? You could do worse than Episode 113- "Black Christmas." In this week's episode, we're back to one of our favorite wells of inanity-- the weird Italian shit of the 1970s and 80s. This time it's the 1980 Umberto Lenzi zombie/tits movie "Nightmare City." Special topics for your consideration include: a metaphor for incel culture, tits, being all one color, tits, the Bristol scale, tits, and tits. This was the first film we covered by this director but we did reference Lucio Fulci a few times, so give our episodes on his movies a listen: Episodes 72, 227, 281, and 388-- "The Beyond," "Zombi 2," "City of the Living Dead," and "House by the Cemetery," respectively. Mortal Kombat is a meme franchise built on Bloodsport, Big Trouble in Little China, and Monty Python-level gore. It has never been serious. So why is this movie better-crafted than most $200 million blockbusters? MonteCristo and DoA break down why Mortal Kombat 2 is the best video game movie ever made and what Hollywood should learn from it. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. MK2 (2026): Fatalities, Fan Service & a Panel Divided | ft. Brian from Lucky Finds ComicsJose (Cupcake), Mike (WillDaBeast), and Brian from Luck Key Finds Comics go spoiler-free on Mortal Kombat 2 (2026) — and the panel is split wide open. Karl Urban arrives as Johnny Cage, Ludi Lin returns as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson is back as Kano, and Adeline Rudolph steps up as Katana in a film that's part fan service, part franchise-building behemoth, and — for at least one of us — a brutal disappointment. Fans of Mortal Kombat (1995), Mortal Kombat (2021), and classic video game tournament films like Enter the Dragon and Bloodsport will find a lot to chew on here. We dig into the franchise legacy, the creative team behind the film, and deliver three very different verdicts — including one that drops the hammer hard. Watch or skip? You'll have to listen to find out who loved it, who had reservations, and who called Finish Him on the whole thing.
We reminisce about our childhood playground games, like wall ball and four square. We also say goodbye to Ogre, a childhood icon...Also, who knew there was a Bloodsport 2? We get into (sports) superstitions. Then we dissect the NBA Playoffs and the first week of the WNBA season.
In this week's episode, we are taking a stroll down the most toxic of emotions (nostalgia) with the 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Special topics for your consideration include: men who wear jewelry, an extreme misunderstanding in the nature of a sex scene, podcast awards, and The Cure. We covered the original and sequel of this franchise in episodes 8 and 328, respectively. You can also catch more JLH in Episode 269- "Can't Hardly Wait." The regular lineup of links! On Raw, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk teased a future match with the "just say when" moment, while Roman Reigns pushed back on part-timer talk and said he'll be around all summer. Jacob Fatu stepped up and challenged Roman Reigns for Backlash, while Brock Lesnar's status remains unclear after his WrestleMania loss, with no real confirmation on whether he's done. Outside the ring, Booker T called out major security issues during WrestleMania weekend. Elsewhere, Darby Allin wins the AEW World Title, Shotzi Blackheart takes the GCW Clusterf—, Josh Barnett ends Bloodsport, and Callum Newman confirms his NJPW future. Be sure to support the show and follow us @TurnbuckleTavern. Until next week, stay out of the alley and away from the pork and beans. Good luck and good speed.
"Misfired Cannons" comes to a conclusion as a post Golan & Globus era Cannon limps to its final days amidst new ownership but continued, and growing, financial woes. In a blatant attempt to try to recapture some of their past glory, Cannon looked to start a new franchise that might capture the same fans as those of one of its most popular previous successful series, American Ninja. So, recruiting one of the stars of that franchise, and the director of the first installments, Cannon unleashed American Samurai. But even with the lowered expectations of a straight-to-video release, this film didn't enjoy the same financial or cult success of the American Ninja series. So, what went wrong? We discuss leading man (and another important Cannon figure) David Bradley, the onscreen debut of martial arts star Mark Dacascos, the movie's strange "love story," its similarities to American Ninja, and why its attempt to also copy the recent success of another martial arts movie, Bloodsport, may have been its downfall. With all the reboots and remakes going around, you figured Hollywood was going to have to get to Bloodsport eventually. But how do you cast it? And is a mid-major company known for horror and artsy-fartsy fare the way to go? We also have more complaints about the latest take on It and lament about what it means for Stephen King. We love vampire stories. As Sinners recently proved, you can tell a great one with strong acting and a top notch story. It seems like Night Patrol is going to go this route. The acting is spot on, with fantastic performances from Justin Long, Jermaine Fowler, and CM Punk, just to name a few. Everyone is completely locked in. The story about the LAPD's dark secret is also interesting. But when you add in demons, lizard men, African mysticism, and lots of blood, things get a little hard to follow. And this is on top of themes of colonizers, race relations, police brutality, and escaping your past. It never stops being fun, but it is a whole lot to take in. BLOODSPORT (1988) - Couch Potato Theater: 1980's Cannon Films Retrospective Watch: Fandom Podcast Network YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/@FandomPodcastNetwork Listen: Couch Potato Theater Audio Podcast Link: https://fpnet.podbean.com/category/couch-potato-theater Welcome to Couch Potato Theater, where we celebrate our favorite movies on the Fandom Podcast Network! We're celebrating 1980's Cannon action films with a retrospective on how important these movies were to our fandom then, and the nostalgic grasp they still have on us today. On this episode we discuss Jean-Claude Van Damme's cult classic movie, BLOODSPORT (1988). Bloodsport is a 1988 American martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, with a supporting cast of Leah Ayres, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, Norman Burton, Forest Whitaker, and Bolo Yeung. The film centers on Frank Dux (Van Damme), a United States Army captain and ninjutsu practitioner who competes in an underground full-contact martial arts tournament called the Kumite in Hong Kong. Based on Dux's real-life claims, the film was marketed as a true story. It was one of Van Damme's first lead roles and showcased his abilities, launching his career as a mainstream action star. We will also discuss the films 1980's Cannon Films Famous Producers, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. We also mention the documentaries about them, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014), and The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films (2014).
