Our healthcare system treats us like it's one size fits all, yet that's not how true healing works, especially when it comes to chronic conditions. Today's guest will help us understand how to fill the gap we experience with Western medicine, including the difference between signs vs. symptoms, and empowers our individualized healthcare. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator Andrea Nakayama to explore why chronic conditions require more than just a diagnosis and a prescription. They unpack Andrea's “three roots, many branches” model, revealing how digestion, inflammation, and genetics lie at the heart of chronic illness—and how nurturing the "soil" around them can lead to true healing. From nutrition habits to the importance of bio-individuality, this conversation empowers you to become an informed partner in your health care. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Intro: Our healthcare system is one size fits all(05:08) Andrea shares her motivation for her journey into functional nutrition, and a discussion of Western medicine(07:41) Should every person receive the same treatment for the same chronic condition(11:45) How to choose a guide in the health equation(16:40) Knowing the difference between your signs vs. symptoms(21:59) Andrea walks us through the “three roots and many branches” model(28:36) The roles digestion and inflammation play in our health(33:37) Tiers to nutrition mastery. Tier one is our non-negotiables(36:40) Don't neglect your passion and purpose(38:48) Andrea's non-negotiable trifecta: Sleep, poop, and blood sugarKEY TAKEAWAYS:Chronic health conditions must be understood through a systems-based lens, not just symptom management. Every chronic issue has three core roots—genes, digestion, and inflammation. Healing begins by nurturing these “roots” and the surrounding “soil,” rather than chasing individual symptoms alone. Western medicine excels in acute care but often falls short in managing chronic conditions. Patients are frequently seen through the lens of their diagnosis rather than as whole individuals, resulting in treatments that overlook their unique health histories and personal needs. One of the most powerful tools patients can use is specific, emotion-free communication based on personal health tracking. By clearly distinguishing between signs (measurable indicators like fever or rash) and symptoms (subjective experiences like fatigue or pain) and offering detailed timelines of when and how issues arise, patients empower providers to better understand and address their unique health needs.Supporting foundational health can start with three simple, non-negotiable nutrition habits: include fat, fiber, and protein at every meal or snack to help stabilize blood sugar; eat the rainbow to boost fiber and phytonutrient intake while feeding your microbiome; and know your yes-no-maybe list to understand better how specific foods impact your body. Tracking what makes you feel great, what doesn't, and what you're unsure about builds awareness and equips you to have more productive, personalized conversations with your healthcare provider.QUOTES: (07:41) “The first two gaps I encountered were that people are treated like their diagnosis. So, when you are in the medical system, you are your endometriosis, your fibroids, your breast cancer, your PMS. You are your symptom. The other gap was that everybody with the same symptom or diagnosis was treated the same.” - Andrea Nakayama(09:34) “A chronic condition means you're sick and you're not getting better. There's things going on for a long time, and our medical system isn't trained to address chronic conditions.” Andrea Nakayama(25:32) “The three roots of any chronic condition are always our genes, digestion and inflammation. All three need to be tended to for the branches to express themselves more fully.” - Andrea Nakayama(36:53) “We have an episode called the Longevity Equation, and one about Blue Zones and one of the big factors there that everybody seems to overlook is community and connection.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: Genes and EpigeneticsSalad With a Side of Fries: The Longevity EquationSalad With a Side of Fries: Blue Zones: A Blueprint for Physical and Mental HealthSalad With a Side of Fries: The Down and DirtyGUEST RESOURCES:Andrea Nakayama - WebsiteFunctional Nutrition Alliance - WebsiteAndrea Nakayama - InstagramFunctional Nutrition Alliance - YouTubeAndrea Nakayama - PinterestAndrea Nakayama, Functional Nutritionist & EducatorAndrea Nakayama - Functional Nutrition Alliance | LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Andrea is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator who has led thousands of clients and teaches even more coaches and clinicians worldwide. Encouraging physicians to make a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome and prescribe medication for it is big business. I'm not saying that medication for IBS is never a good idea or never effective, but I am saying that it is often an overly expedient solution that doesn't usually lead to lasting relief for the simple reason that IBS consists of multiple different conditions. Since there is no one unifying diagnosis of "IBS" there can't be one unifying pharmaceutical solution. We'd love to hear from you - send us a text!Thank you for being a part of our community! Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Snaz: Hi Dr. Cabral. I am located in Southern CA in an area impacted by fires. The air has been very ashy. When the farmers market reopened after the initial crisis had passed, I had gone shopping at the market and then I was washing my veggies and started to think about how this toxic ash may end up in our food being grown in the region. What if anything can or should we do to prevent the body from absorbing these additional toxins? I can remember "smoky" vintages of wine from previous fires. This obviously ends up in our food system through direct settling on the produce or absorption in the soil. Is there anything extra we can do to protect our health from this additional source of toxins? Or just all of the usual things you talk about? Thank you for your thoughts. Gemma: Has the Dr Cabral practice ever worked with Milky Oats (avena sativa)? I see that it is often used for anxiety (amongst other things such as alcohol or drug recovery) but I would like to understand if you have seen this work in practice and if its worthwhile as its quite an expensive herb. Pub med is hinting that it got good results but theres a lot of science in that report! It behaves differently from other herbs for anxiety as other herbs such as passionflower seem to make you sleepy and switch off your brain. I dont quite understand the science behind this one but you take it every day, no sleepiness, no withdrawal symptoms if you forget….seems like a wonder herb in theory. And apparently can also lower cholesterol as an added bonus! Why isn't half the population on this? Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for everything you do. My question is regarding cone beam CT scans at dental offices. What is your recommendation for having this imaging done? I'm 38 and had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled about 5 years ago. I've had a history of bad oral health that I've been working on. I've also had some intermittent jaw/facial symptoms on one side of my face for the last year or so. I recently started to see a holistic dentist and the CBCT is an option. My worry is the radiation with CT scans. Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have a question regarding regular sauna use. I've read a lot about the benefits of multiple sauna sessions per week. I have used a dry sauna at a local gym regularly for a couple of years. I recently purchased a sauna blanket from Higher Dose for the convenience of not having to travel to the gym every day. I do sweat a lot using the sauna blanket especially when I use it after a workout. Is there more of a benefit from a sauna that you're inside of and breathing the warm air, or does the benefit simply come from warming the body to the point of sweating which is still provided by the sauna blanket? Thank you for taking the time to answer everyone's questions! Belinda: Hi doctor Cabral, I was wondering if you could help me with the following: every morning, I have a large, wel-formed, normal bowel movement, but in the afternoon, I feel the urge to go again, but I'm only able to pass a small amount of stool. I'm experiencing bloating and gas, and I feel like I should be able to have a more complete bowel movement. I'm eating a healthy diet with plenty of fiber, drinking enough water, and I recently completed a cleanse, but my symptoms haven't improved. Could you please provide some insight into what might be causing these issues? Really grateful for your help here. Thanks so much! I'm going to tell you about the specific things you should be paying attention to when you assess your bowel movements so you can understand what your stool is trying to tell you. Your GI tract communicates with you by giving you feedback through your stool. This is important information that can improve your health. It might even save your life. Your bowel movements can tip you off to the early signs of colon cancer, liver disease, infection. They can tell you whether you're dehydrated, have a parasite, or problems with your pancreas. Not getting enough greens? Eating too much meat? Thyroid out of whack? Your stool gives you crucial information to help you make those important changes that can make you look, and feel, and function better. How can you figure out what your stool is telling you, and how do you know when you've achieved stool nirvana? The five essential factors that you should be assessing. We'd love to hear from you - send us a text!Thank you for being a part of our community! POOP (ewww) What goes in, must come out! In this episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, and fellow FNTP, Stephanie Ewals, CNS, Licensed Nutritionist, owner of Out of the Woods Nutrition, and host of the Help For Hashimotos podcast talk about the end product of digestion - poop. Talking about pooping is a total taboo, but it's an important topic. The prevalence of GI disorders such as diarrhea, constipation, and alternating diarrhea and constipation is extremely common, with 3-5% of the U.S. population experiencing chronic diarrhea. Globally, 16% of adults experience chronic constipation - up to 19% of adults in the U.S. and a whopping 33% of adults over the age of 60 experience chronic constipation. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with Alternating Diarrhea and Constipation, characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and variability in bowel habits, affect 10-15% of the global population. Among those with IBS, a significant portion (around 25-30%) experiences alternating diarrhea and constipation (IBS-M, mixed type). *Mehta, S. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Ales: Dr. Cabral, what do you think of Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) as a natural help with severe histamine intolerance? If everything else fails, would you recommend this compound to help with mast cells a and supress their excessive production of histamine? Is it even natural suplement like compound or a drug? Please help me understand. Thank you Sarah: I've had reoccurring UTIs and always have to take antibiotics to clear it despite knowing how destructive they can be. This has led to reoccurring yeast infections. I'm about to start the CBO protocol for the yeast, how do I tackle the UTIs? I've tried ALL the natural remedies (dmannose, uva ursi, oregano, probiotics etc) and still suffering and feel my only resort is antibiotics which I want to avoid, as I'm now dealing with yeast overgrowth too. Thank you!! Sarah: My boyfriend has a staph infection that is showing up as rash/pimples all over his body. Dermatologists are telling him the only option is antibiotics. He also has done lab testing and is showing an overgrowth of candida krusei. Trying to avoid antibiotic use as much as possible especially when he has an overgrowth of candida. He is about to start the CBO protocol. Is there anything that can be done for staph naturally/preventing it, other than washing with ACV, tea trea, coconut oil as we've tried that. Jim: Hello Dr. C! I can't thank you enough for all of the hard work you put into these podcasts. I binge listen to them when I travel. I've searched but can't find anything on Post Exertional Malaise. I've been dealing with a variety of health issues from Hashimoto's to, most recently, toxic mold poisoning. I'm currently doing your mold protocol and am having some really bad flare-ups that are very similar to ones I've been experiencing for a few years. To describe what happens, it's as if I am a battery powered robot and my battery go dead. I can literally feel my body shut off, like my battery has been drained. I've had "the virus" twice so I looked into Long Covid and ran across PEM. I checked all the boxes for the symptoms but how can I verify it is this and not the mold? Amanda: Hello! Just wondering what to do for a 3 year old with very inconsistent bowel movements/pellets. Tried high dose vitamin C/magnesium citrate, oxypowder, higher fiber diet, castor oil packs at night, energy work, osteopath, Epsom salt baths, prunes, pears etc. Diet is on point, only choline and ghee butter trigger bowel movements, but if I stop these then it gets irregular. Any advice on supplements/tinctures or foods that can support bile flow? Any advice on how to correct these bowel issues for a toddler, or where to start? Thank you very much for all your help !!! This week, Grant and Ash get spooky, discussing their greatest fears and phobias growing up. Bloody Mary was the name on everyone's lips in school. She terrorized their entire New Jersey hometown, traumatizing Ashley in a Melting Pot restroom and completely dictating Grant's bowel movements as a child. Grant also admits that he is a psychic medium and tells the tale of when he knew his dog was in life-threatening peril. And stay tuned until the end for the craziest Announcement for the Good of the Group we've heard thus far. Let's just say… we'll never look at a tombstone the same. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Kelly: Hi Dr. Cabral I have always had very regular digestion and eat a healthy Whole Foods plant-based vegan diet. However, after having my baby nine months ago, everything changed. I went through natural childbirth and the babies head size was in the 99th percentile I had some pelvic floor issues after delivery And part of that was bleeding after bowel movements. The therapist attributed it to structural changes in pelvic floor. I have worked on pelvic floor exercises to remedy this, but currently the only thing that prevents me from bleeding when having bowel movements is drinking one “smooth move†tea per night, which features the herb Senna. I understand that you should never take laxatives on a daily basis, but this is the only thing that helps! Is senna ok? Kenzie: I saw you recommended fecal immunotherapy test. If you sometimes have blood from hemmorhoids would that show in test/ effect results? Thank you Anonymous: Hi, dr. C., I’m tracking my cycle with Oura.My follicular phase is usually between 17-21 days long,my luteal phase is around 10 days. What does that mean? My periods are not strong but they start with spotting a few days before the actual VERY PAINFUL first day of my period. The cramps/pain come in 3 or 4 intervals that last around 2h each, usually only on that first day but lately even on the second day once or twice. The pain is excruciating & unbearable, but I don’t take any pharmaceuticals. I use supplements, not sure about their bioavailability. I have fibromyalgia & I see with Oura that I get a lot of REM sleep but not 90min of deep sleep (usually between 1h or 75min, rarely 85). My stress levels are also very high throughout most of the day. Testing is not an option, please help Anonymous: Hi ! I started taking parasite protocol last month and 2 weeks later , i began seeing white specks(that look like sesame seeds), and black flat hard shells(the size of a small bean) in my stool. I have been seeing so may of them since as well as a lot of mucus in the stool, and I am wondering if you have any insight on what kinds of parasite or parasite eggs these could be? If these are eggs and not fully grown parasites, would that mean I got the parasitic infection recently? I haven't seen any grown worms yet. Also, what can I do so I never get parasites again? It is so traumatic. Lindsay: Hi Dr Cabral. I have self diagnosed myself with (R-CPD). I have all the symptoms. Mainly I can burp and get very gassy in my stomach because of it. I have no pain like other thank god. In my research the only thing I've found people do for relief is botox on their throat. Is there any functional medicine practices to help with the extended stomach issue from this? Hannah: Hi Dr.Cabral. I would first off like to thankyou for all of the information you provide on these podcasts, it has changed my life in so many ways for the better. Im 17 and have been listening for 2 years now every since i started getting sick, i have had amenorrhea for two years that was followed by losing 17 kg unexpectedly in 6 months and alot of other issues with my gut even eating over 3000 calories a day (but whole food) . However the issue i have now is my thyroid keeps getting lower (currently at 3.74) and i cannot stop binge eating after a TBI in a horse riding accident and have gained 5+ kg in 1 month and it keeps going up. I cant afford lab tests (i live in australia) as i have looked into it and it just isnt possible, do you have any other recommendations? Enjoy this interview with Megan Starshak, an ulcerative colitis warrior, adventurer, runner, cyclist, patient advocate and co-founder of The Great Bowel Movement. In this conversation, Megan shares her journey with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), her advocacy work, and how she balances life with chronic illness. She discusses her diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and the challenges she faced in finding effective treatments. Megan emphasizes the importance of finding a supportive community and offers advice for young adults with IBD. She also talks about her involvement with The Great Bowel Movement, an organization that aims to decrease the stigma surrounding IBD. Megan shares her career in marketing and how she uses her skills to support other patient advocates. She closes this interview with a message of empowerment and the importance of not wasting the challenges we face. Takeaways Finding a supportive community is crucial for individuals with IBD. Connecting with others who understand the challenges can provide a sense of belonging and empowerment. It is important for young adults with IBD to be proactive in their healthcare journey. Staying informed about treatment options and advocating for oneself can lead to better outcomes. The Great Bowel Movement is an organization that aims to decrease the stigma surrounding IBD. They provide resources and support for individuals living with IBD and encourage open conversations about the disease. Megan's career in marketing allows her to use her skills to support other patient advocates and help them share their stories. She believes in the power of storytelling and connecting ideas with the people who can make a difference. Living with a chronic illness can be challenging, but it can also lead to personal growth and resilience. Embracing the journey and finding meaning in the struggles can empower individuals to live their lives to the fullest. Topics covered in the interview Megan's IBD Story and Diagnosis Understanding IBD and Treatment The Impact of IBD on Daily Life Advice for Young Adults with IBD Navigating Treatment and Doctor Appointments Finding Effective Medications Life in Remission Navigating Food and Trigger Foods The Great Bowel Movement Megan's Career and Supporting Patient Advocates From the show Stephanie: Looking back at that time in your life and reflecting on when you were going through this as a college student, what advice would you give to other young adults who are living with a chronic illness? Megan: Advice for people going through that now would be just to keep yourself informed, and know that it's okay if you don't understand the deep science of what all the treatments are or what they do, but just know that there are options out there. There are so many more options now than I had when I was that age, which is really amazing for people to have just some more things on the table. It's kind of frustrating that you do have to take charge, that we're still in a place where nobody is really going to do this for you, but it's also kind of a good growing up action too. Start by understanding what's going on in your body, what's going on with your treatment, and managing the relationship with your doctor. Stephanie: What are your biggest takeaways from the lessons you've learned throughout your IBD journey? Megan: Understanding treatments and understanding nutrition and exercise, but also realizing you have to find what works specifically for you and that it might take a little bit of trial and error and working with your doctor to figure out what's going to be best. Also, coming to terms with what you wanted maybe isn't what the reality is; I gave up running, but I found cycling. I found an entire other sport that I love that I have met some really amazing friends through. So it's okay to pivot. It's okay if your best laid plans do not come to life. You're gonna be okay. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Cindy: I love Fatlossity PM for the best sleep, but I often get jittery with caffeine so I have only used the AM short term. I don't get the same effect with your Sleep Support supplement (melatonin tends to awaken me after only a few hours). I do benefit from the amino acid L-trypophine, on occasion. Since Fatlossity PM cannot be purchased separately, do you have any suggestions for improving sleep or which supplement is likely to help me? My sleep has improved over the last 6 years from learning from you, but I often still wake up after 5 or 6 hours of sleep to go to the bathroom. I am post-menopasusal, but I do take estrogen replacement- which has helped. But, Once my brain starts thinking, sadly sleep is usually over! Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral. 39 year old male here. My issue is related to “Incomplete Bowel Movement” and I have been experiencing this issue for at least 10 years and I'm unsure what I should do about it. Basically, I have a normal bowel movement but it sometimes feels like not everything came out. So then I use an anal douche and every single time there is more poop coming out with the water. This happens with every single bowel movement. I'm a “fitness guy” with a healthy diet and lots of fiber. Thank you! Joy: Thanks for all you do Dr Cabral! (Q #1 of higher importance) I'm a 30y/o F & would consider myself to be decently healthy & aware of my body. I however experience awful joint pain & weakness. It tends to hold me back from enjoying an active lifestyle. It's literally every joint from my neck to my ankles. My brother was born with a disease -Osteogenesis Imperfecta but has the more mild type 1. It affects the production of collagen. I don't think I have OI also. Curious what would you recommend me take/do to help my joint pain. Q#2 I recently read of the “earthing” concept, which is supposed to have a range of health benefits. It involves the natural electricity of the earth, here is a link for more info. I'm skeptical, but would like to know what u think! https://groundingofficial.com/ Jade: Hey there. I've been invested in my health for some time now and have been doing my best to encourage people around me to be healthier versions of themselves. However, I have one aunt in her late 50s whose diet isn't necessarily the best. She drinks Diet Coke mostly every day, eats out regularly and doesn't exercise. She also has an extremely stressful job which doesn't help. It‘s always been difficult to encourage her to change her eating habits, but she was just diagnosed with carpal tunnel. I told her I would do my best to get information on small changes she can make to better her condition and overall life. Is there anything she can do or take that may not be drastic? I would recommend your detox and less processed foods and drinks of course, but that's too extreme for her. Erica: Hi Dr. Cabral! I wanted to ask you your thoughts on what could be the root of my symptoms. I've had dizziness for about 3-4 years now and it's very consistent almost every day. However, it hasn't gotten worse it's stayed very consistent over this time. It seems to be worse around the time of my period and also when under stress. In addition, I have a lot of popping in both of my ears and sometimes my ears feel itchy and almost like my eustachian tubes have to release pressure. I went to the ENT who said I might have Eustachian tube dysfunction but ruled out any fluid in my ears or other issues. I also tried the maneuver for crystals in my ears which didn't seem to have an effect either. Any thoughts on things I could try? Dizziness got worse when I took antibiotics 3/4 years ago.
