This week we discuss what, in retrospect, was the most controversial film of the year, even more than two serial killer films. No, the honor of Film That Made Everyone Angry was this week's movie, predicated on flipping the script on the most infamous moment in American political history. And yet, for a movie tackling such a weighty subject, with a strong, self-assured filmmaker at the helm, this is an absolute stinker of a movie. it's bad enough that the movie trades in some of the worst and most easily debunked conspiracy theories surrounding November 22, 1963; it's also just so incredibly boring. Kevin Costner is reduced to expounding exposition while everyone else has to overact around him, all because Oliver Stone needed to shove his own dark beliefs into the public sphere. In doing so, he created a new level of doubt that has since transformed into some of the most dangerous conspiracy believers in society. The Classic Film: Lake Placid (1999) "Three people attempt to stop a gigantic crocodile, who is terrorizing residents in Black Lake, Maine” (IMDb.com). Lake Placid is just a bundle of clichés in a Jaws suit, but we can see why it may be some people's comfort flick. The Modern Film: Host (2020) "Six friends hire a medium to hold a seance via Zoom during lockdown, but they get far more than they bargained for as things quickly go wrong” (IMDb.com). Well, OK, to be fair it also shoves Bette Midler in front of the camera to sing songs that have pretty much nothing to do with the story being told. The Classic Film: Rear Window (1954) "A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder” (IMDb.com). Yes, Bob Saget has starred in many successful television shows, including two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced ("Full House" and "Americas Funniest Home Videos") but he's also an out of his mind, Grammy-nominated standup comedian for over thirty years. From his HBO special "That Ain't Right" to his scene-stealing cameos in "Entourage," and "The Aristocrats," it's always effective as Saget embraces his dark side. From directing MGM's cult favorite feature film "Dirty Work," to directing and producing the highly acclaimed ABC television movie, "For Hope," to starring in the critically acclaimed, Paul Weitz off-Broadway play, "Privilege, to starring on Broadway in the Tony Award winning "The Drowsy Chaperone," Bob Saget shows no signs of stopping.  Ever.  In 2007 came the hugely successful DVD release of "Farce of the Penguins," an R-rated comedy/documentary/love story, that he voiced-over, wrote, directed, and produced, with producer David Permut.  And then came the hit NBC quiz show "1 VS 100," where Bob ad-libbed his way through the one-hour prime time format.  In 2008, "The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget" premiered to the second highest ratings of all TV that night, second only to the Olympics.   For many years now, Bob has been a proud board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. He co-produces and hosts "Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine" fundraising events in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco.  To date, they have raised over 53 million dollars for the SRF going directly to research to cure this disease.   Bob was seen several times reprising the role of “Himself” on HBO's hit series “Entourage” as well as a cameo in the film.  He also starred in his own documentary comedy series for A&E titled, “Strange Days with Bob Saget,” an exploration of unusual subcultures in America.     ----------   Robert Reiner was born in New York City, to Estelle Reiner (née Lebost) and Emmy-winning actor, comedian, writer, and producer Carl Reiner. As a child, he often looked up to his father as his inspiration and role-model. Carl Reiner was on The Dick Van Dyke Show, which he created and also starred in. Estelle was the inspiration for Rob Reiner to become a director. Her history as a singer helped him understand how music was used in a scene. Rob often felt pressured about measuring up to his father's twelve Emmys, and prestigious awards and successful streak. When Rob graduated high school, his parents advised him to participate in Summer Theatre. Reiner got a job as an apprentice in the Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania. He went to be further educated at UCLA Film School. Reiner felt he still wasn't successful even having a recurring role on one of the biggest shows in the country, All in the Family. Reiner began his directing career with the Oscar-nominated films This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and The Princess Bride,. With these successful box-office movies in 1987, Reiner founded his own production company, Castle Rock Entertainment, along with Martin Shafer, Andrew Scheinman, Glenn Padnick, and Alan Horn. For Castle Rock Entertainment, he went to direct the Oscar-nominated films When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Reiner often credits former co-star Carroll O'Connor in helping him get into the directing business, and showing Reiner the ropes. Reiner also is known as a political activist, co-founding the American Foundation For Equal Rights, a group that was an advisory for same-sex-marriage. Reiner has spoken at several rallies on several controversial topics, and is also seen as an advocate on social issues, such as domestic violence and tobacco use. Reiner has also made cameos on show like 30 Rock, The Simpsons, and Hannah Montana, and in the films The First Wives Club, Bullets Over Broadway, Primary Colors, and Throw Momma From The Train, among many others.

The Classic Film: From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) “Two criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in a truck stop populated by vampires, with chaotic results” (IMDb.com). Silly, fun, and very much over-the-top, From Dusk Till Dawn manages to make you not care about the many cracks in its surface. The Modern Film: Grindhouse (2007) “Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's homage to exploitation double features in the 60s and 70s [presents] two back-to-back cult films that include previews of coming attractions between them” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey *would* have been watching graduation movies this week, but since there seem to be no ceremonies this year, we’ll watch teenagers have parties they shouldn't be having instead! The Classic Film: Night of the Demons (1988) "Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween night. When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep them from leaving and turn their gathering into a living Hell” (IMDb.com). This B-movie was surprisingly fun, despite (or because of?) a complete lack of commitment to lore or reason.  The Modern Film: Night of the Demons (2009) "A group of kids go to a Halloween party, only to have to face down a group of demons” (IMDb.com). Same thing; different day. This second attempt added some promising lore, but it has the absolute stank of post-2000 horror remake all over it. The Classic Film: Wait Until Dark (1967) "A recently blinded woman is terrorized by a trio of thugs while they search for a heroin-stuffed doll they believe is in her apartment" (IMDb.com). Audrey Hepburn cranks up the melodrama opposite a very creepy, young Alan Arkin in this influential classic, and what seems like a simple heist drama quickly turns to horror when a convoluted plan gets out of hand. The Modern Film: Hush (2016) "A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window" (Netflix). Horror super-couple Mike Flanagan (writer/director) and Kate Siegel (writer/actress) are at it again with a pretty fantastic bottle-movie that manages to reinvigorate what has lately been a tired subgenre. Listen along with YOUR stepfather! The Classic Film: The Stepfather (1987) "After murdering his entire family, a man remarries a widow with a teenage daughter in another town and prepares to do it all over again" (IMDb.com). This cult classic turned out to be much better than we were expecting. Plus, you get to see Terry O'Quinn's stepfatherly dong. As the two men get to know each other, he becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand" (Sony Pictures). The Classic Film: Rawhead Rex (1986) "Ireland will never be the same after Rawhead Rex, a particularly nasty demon, is released from his underground prison by an unwitting farmer” (IMDb.com). Clive Barker famously dislikes this production of one of his many screenplays, and for good reason, but maybe… just maybe… it wasn’t that great a concept to begin with? The Modern Film: Constantine (2005) "Supernatural detective John Constantine helps a policewoman prove her sister's death was not a suicide, but something more” (IMDb.com). It answers questions regarding where you come from, where you are going, and why you are here. The message helps us embrace the world as it is and the people around us as they are—and love whatever that is. Not because it’s a perfect world, but because as we love and accept life as it is, love and acceptance grow.

Join me as I talk to Betsy Otter Thompson about Parenting with Love!           LOVEPARENT: How To Be The Parent You Hope To Be, (1991), published by Ascension Publishing LOVEPARENT interprets spirit's journey from thought, to seed, to birth, following the child's journey well into adolescence. Among the topics discussed are communication, eating habits, sibling rivalry, discipline, peer group temptations, adoption, divorce and independence. The union between parent and child is the main focus of the book, and recommends taking positive action in your relationship with your child rather than trying to get rid of the negative. If you enjoy parenting, or hope to parent yourself better, LOVEPARENT is the book for you. Betsy's work has always gravitated toward the media.
