Food Addiction, the Problem and the Solution
Sugar and Ultra-Processed Foods Are Addictive

Large food companies, previously owned by tobacco companies, know that we are addicted to sugar and ultra-processed foods.  These companies are making large profits using the same tobacco addiction model with items they are selling us to eat. Food companies add sugars to food items, like high fructose corn syrup, and 250 other sugars to the engineered items they call food.  Meanwhile, the U.S. population is over 50 percent obese with many health problems and our children are becoming addicted to sugar and these chemically-altered items. We are made to feel like it is our fault as food addicts, by these food companies and by medical professionals, that we just need to eat less and exercise more to lose weight and become healthy. Sugar and highly processed foods cause a dopamine release in our brains identical to other addictive substances like alcohol and drugs causing us to become addicted.  Dr. Nicole Avena and Dr. Erica LaFata, are two professionals who have made it their life's work to raise awareness about our sugar and ultra-processed food addiction. Dr. Avena's book Sugarless, Book, Dr. Nicole Avena, and Dr. Erica LaFata's research using the Yale Food Addiction Scale  have helped progress our understanding of what is actually going on.  Dr. Avena and Dr. LaFata presented their findings at the International Food Addiction Consensus Conference (IFAC) held in London, May, 2024.  Professionals gathered at this conference and reached a consensus: Ultra-processed foods should be recognized in the International Classifications of Diseases (ICD) and the APA's (DSM), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a substance-use disorder, identical to alcohol and drugs.  The only question now is:  As a society, how long will it take for us to see the truth?  That we are ADDICTED:  to sugar and ultra-processed foods …..and they are killing us.  And how many millions must die as our country spends billions on obesity-related illnesses for us to recognize that we are addicted to sugar and ultra-processed foods? It is not our fault.  There is a problem and there is a solution.

Do you think your child was exposed to alcohol or drugs during pregnancy? If so, a diagnosis can help your child access services and support. Check out this show with Dr. Yasmin Senturias, a developmental-behavioral pediatric specialist with 28 years of experience in developmental pediatrics and prenatal substance exposure. She worked with the American Academy of Pediatrics on developing their FASD Toolkit. In this episode, we cover:Prenatal Drug ExposureDo the impacts differ depending on what drug the child was exposed to? What's the difference between Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) or Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). Short-term impacts? Is the impact less severe for legal drugs, such as nicotine and marijuana? Is the impact less severe for legal medications used to treat substance abuse disorders in pregnant women? What are the medical disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD) for prenatal drug exposure? Do these diagnoses have to be made at birth? What diagnosis is available if the child was exposed to drugs in utero but was not born dependent and didn't go through withdrawal, and therefore did not have a diagnosis of NAS or NOWS in their medical record?Do these diagnoses help the child and youth receive more services? What type of doctor can make this diagnosis? FASD:It is estimated that 1% to 5% of children in the United States may have an FASD. How common is drinking in pregnancy? (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data indicate that approximately 12% of pregnancies may have alcohol exposure.)Is the severity of the impact on the child, youth, or adult directly correlated to the amount of alcohol the mother consumed when pregnant? What are the actual diagnoses that exist on this spectrum of FASDs?Explain the differences in these disorders. Is one diagnosis better than another in terms of getting services and support for the child in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood? Are these different disorders linear on the spectrum from lesser to greater life impacts? Why is it important to get a diagnosis? Is it possible to get a diagnosis without mom admitting to using alcohol or drugs during her pregnancy? What to do if the child's record doesn't reflect that the mom drank during pregnancy? If you suspect or know that your child or youth was exposed to alcohol in utero, how can you get a diagnosis? What are some common misdiagnoses that kids and adolescents with prenatal alcohol exposure may get? What type of doctor can diagnose? Do you need a referral from your pediatrician to get an appointment with a specialist?Dual Exposure to Alcohol and DrugsHow common is the dual use of alcohol and drugs? How can drugs and alcohol together affect the child both in infancy and throughout life?Impact of TraumaHow does trauma interplay with prenatal substance exposure?Resources:American Academy of Pediatric Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders The American Academy of Pediatrics FASD Toolkit was developed in coordination with the CDC to raise awareness, promote surveillance and screening, and ensure that all children who possibly have FASDs receive appropriate and timely interventions. Breast Implant Illness
Episode 27: The Truth About Breast Implant Illness: Research, Treatment Options and More

Breast Implant Illness

Despite the cases involving breast implant illness, there is still a lack of research studies, clinical studies, and other resources regarding this matter. Recognizing the concerns raised, surgeons, medical practitioners, and other organizations have called for further investigation into breast implant safety and potential health risks associated with them, particularly regarding breast implant illness. That is why it's important for us to discuss breast implant illness considering the fact that it's been hard to characterize such a condition. We have to continue raising awareness to provide timely intervention and appropriate medical management, if necessary. Your body and breast implants play a role but it's not the only factor. Back in 2019-2020, when I was the president of the Education Research Foundation for the Aesthetic Society, we were able to fund studies on the psychological and basic scientific aspects of breast implant illness. We were able to learn more about the condition as we conducted a randomized prospective trial about surgery, identification of heavy metals, and more. Initially, we thought of it as just an inflammation but it became more significant to the point that the patient can no longer manage the inflammation. Moreover, it affects the patient's mental health and this issue cannot be solely linked to their bodies or breast implants. There are other factors causing the symptoms of anxiety, depression, brain fog, muscle, and joint pains, and the list goes on. And from a provider's standpoint, it's complicated and challenging to recognize all the patterns because the condition of breast implant illness is not yet well acknowledged and understood. Breast Implant Illness is still not part of the provided classification systems. It should be noted that for something to be categorized as a medical diagnosis, it has to be implemented in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). At present, breast implant illness is still not part of the provided classification systems. Therefore, it is not yet a recognized medical diagnosis, although there are groups and organizations working towards that. It's going to take some time before it gets to be recognized as a medical diagnosis officially but since I've spent years studying the condition, we were able to make a program to further help patients and even surgeons. As much as we can, we provide the best care for our clients. Putting a great deal into different factors that may contribute to inflammation and breast implant illness Due to the lack of studies regarding this matter, many practitioners find it difficult to recognize the symptoms and patterns of breast implant illness. Personally, I've seen a lot of patients dealing with environmental toxicity which is why I put a great deal into everybody's personal genetics as well as the toxicity levels, food sensitivities, and hormone imbalances. Other factors, like the environment, should also be taken into consideration in correlation with personal genetics, especially when we speak of inflammation. A good example of this would be some of my clients who are realtors constantly exposed to environmental toxins as they go into different homes and renovations. Some of these toxins can cause brain fog, anxiety, and gut problems. Pattern recognition is really important and because I have done thousands of consultations, heard different stories throughout my years of being in this field, and seen the outcomes of different tests, it's been easier for me to guide patience throughout their journey. The importance of addressing other issues before surgery It's vital for us to address all the health issues a patient may have because otherwise, the patient will still experience symptoms. Our assessments should be done with a holistic approach to be able to treat everything properly. Taking a holistic approach to assessment and treatment allows providers to consider the broader context of a patient's health and well-being for more effective solutions or treatments. Before surgery, conducting a comprehensive evaluation helps identify any underlying health conditions or factors that may affect the surgery's outcome or recovery. Addressing these issues beforehand can optimize the patient's overall health and reduce the risk of complications during or after surgery.

Burnout stems from chronic stress (commonly in the workplace), that has not been managed. It has three dimensions:Exhaustion or energy depletionDepersonalization or negative feelings about your jobReduced professional efficacy/feelings of lack of accomplishment“Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and even though it should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life,” I feel that it can and does spill over and affect other areas of our lives. In today's episode we are going to look at 10 signs and symptoms of burnout and then look at some strategies to help with it.If you would like to avoid burnout and work on ways to prevent it I encourage you to take a look at my “Your Wellness Journey Program” and book a 20 minute free call.Go to www.wellwomennetwork.com/work-with-meSend me a DM on the gram @wellwomennetworkAre you subscribed to my podcast? Talk Therapy: Burnout Exposed - What is It and Why Should You Care?

This week we're starting a new series all about burnout. The Lord put this topic on my heart to process in these Talk Therapy sessions for a few reasons. First, both my husband and I have experienced it at different seasons and it almost took us off track of our callings. Second, because I counsel so many people who suffer from it. Third, I am tired of the enemy taking territory in an area that could be avoided. Let's start by bringing some facts about burnout into the light: The term “burnout” originated in the 1970s by psychoanalyst Dr. Herbert Freudenberger. While supervising counselors who work with people dealing with addiction, he noticed symptoms of emotional and physical fatigue that were imparting their work. World Health Organization (WHO) included “burn-out” in the eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in 2019. This means burnout is serious! Symptoms of burnout mirror depression. But Dr. O'Hana says that burnout's bottom line is disconnection from everything that is important to you, including your very heart and soul. “When we are disconnected, we begin to equate our identity with achievement and performance rather than accepting and loving ourselves as the people God created us to be.” “Self-care is not a luxury; it is an ethical priority.” Now, let's pause to process: How is your heart? On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being “I'm great” to 10 meaning “I'm already burnt out”, where do you fall? Be honest. If anything above a 5, please get help. Tell a friend, family member, or counselor. God, what are you saying to me today? Resource mentioned: Beyond Burnout: What to Do When Your Work Isn't Working for You Connect with Rachael: website | Instagram | Facebook

The audio quality can be a little wonky this week. We've identified the issue and resolved it. Sorry about that. We've heard for years that gamers are violent. But what if gamers were more peaceful in game than the people around them in real life? A really interesting new study has identified that gamers behave differently in EVE Online depending on the type of community they live in.The Nirvana Nevermind baby isn't happy about his nudes being plastered all over record stores and the internet. Now he's suing. We're not legal beagles, but we've got opinions.Roblox is bad. It isn't the simple gameplay, the child targeted community, or the memes. Actually, it's bad because it's one of the worst deals for game devs out there. Roblox seem intent to make it hard to make money from developing on their platform. That's a really nice way to treat the people who made your game popular. People are also trying to recreate mass killings in a game for children. A+E Networks today is a 50-50 joint venture of the Walt Disney Co. and Hearst Corp. Davatzes served as CEO emeritus. Davatzes led the company's launch of the signature A&E Network (an amalgam of Arts and Entertainment) in 1984 and History Channel in 1995 (History formally dropped “Channel” from its moniker in 2008). He served as CEO of the parent company through 2005, when he was succeeded by protege Abbe Raven, who started at the company as a secretary. Davatzes was known for promoting educational outreach and the importance of industry R&D during his run at A&E Networks. The company later expanded to include the Lifetime cable channel as well as more recent entries like lifestyle channel FYI and Lifetime Movie Network. Disney executive chairman Bob Iger hailed him as a “towering figure in the early days of cable television (who helped) build some of the most iconic brands in the media landscape.” Iger added that he was “a person of true integrity.” He died in Wilton, Connecticut.24th August 2021 – Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts passes away at 80 - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-25/rolling-stones-drummer-charlie-watts-dies-at-age-80/100404658Charlie Watts, the drummer who provided the backbone of the Rolling Stones' songs for more than half a century, has died. Watts "passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family," his publicist Bernard Doherty said. "Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones, as one of the greatest drummers of his generation." The quiet, elegantly dressed Watts was often ranked with Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and a handful of others as a premier rock drummer, respected worldwide for his muscular, swinging style as the band rose from its scruffy beginnings to international superstardom. He joined the Stones early in 1963 and remained over the next 60 years, ranked just behind Jagger and Keith Richards as the group's longest lasting and most essential members. Watts stayed on, and largely held himself apart, through the drug abuse, creative clashes and ego wars that helped kill founding member Brian Jones, drove bassist Bill Wyman and Jones' replacement Mick Taylor to quit and otherwise made being in the Stones the most exhausting of jobs. The Stones began, Watts said, "as white blokes from England playing black American music" but quickly evolved their own distinctive sound. Watts was a jazz drummer in his early years and never lost his affinity for the music he first loved, heading his own jazz band and taking on numerous other side projects. He had his eccentricities — Watts liked to collect cars even though he didn't drive and would simply sit in them in his garage. But he was a steadying influence on stage and off as the Stones defied all expectations by rocking well into their 70s, decades longer than their old rivals The Beatles. He died in London with his family around him.25th August 2021 – Linux turns 30 - https://www.zdnet.com/article/linus-torvalds-on-linuxs-30th-birthday/ In 1991, Unix was an important but secondary x86 operating system. That year, on August 25, a mild-mannered Finnish graduate student named Linus Benedict Torvalds announced on the Usenet group comp.os.minix that he was working on "a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." No one knew it, not even Torvalds, but the technology was going to change forever. Thirty years later, Linux rules IT. Almost all major websites -- including Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia -- run on Linux. It's the same with the clouds. Even on Microsoft's own Azure, the most popular operating system is Linux. As for supercomputers, all 500 of the world's fastest 500 supercomputers run Linux. Thanks to Android, Linux is also the most popular end-user operating system. Not bad for a hobby operating system! In those very first days, Linux wasn't formally known as Linux. Torvalds explained, "Linux was my working name, but I never wanted to release it as Linux. Linux was a perfectly good working name, but if I actually used it as the official one, people would think that I am an egomaniac and wouldn't take it seriously. So I chose this very bad name, "Freax," for "Free Unix." Fortunately, the first Linux administrator Ari Lemmk, decided Freax was a silly name too. Hence, he actually named it Linux because he thought this internal project name was Torvalds first choice.Remembrances25th August 1822 – William Herschel - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_HerschelGerman-born British astronomer and composer. He frequently collaborated with his younger sister and fellow astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel. Born in the Electorate of Hanover, William Herschel followed his father into the military band of Hanover, before emigrating to Great Britain in 1757 at the age of nineteen. Herschel constructed his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars. Herschel published catalogues of nebulae in 1802 (2,500 objects) and in 1820 (5,000 objects). The resolving power of the Herschel telescopes revealed that many objects called nebulae in the Messier catalogue were actually clusters of stars. On 13 March 1781 while making observations he made note of a new object in the constellation of Gemini. This would, after several weeks of verification and consultation with other astronomers, be confirmed to be a new planet, eventually given the name of Uranus. This was the first planet to be discovered since antiquity, and Herschel became famous overnight. As a result of this discovery, George III appointed him Court Astronomer. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and grants were provided for the construction of new telescopes. Herschel pioneered the use of astronomical spectrophotometry, using prisms and temperature measuring equipment to measure the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. In the course of these investigations, Herschel discovered infrared radiation. Other work included an improved determination of the rotation period of Mars, the discovery that the Martian polar caps vary seasonally, the discovery of Titania and Oberon (moons of Uranus) and Enceladus and Mimas (moons of Saturn). Herschel was made a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1816. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when it was founded in 1820. He died at the age of 83 at Observatory House, Windsor Road, Slough Herschel's epitaph is Coelorum perrupit claustra (He broke through the barriers of the heavens).Famous Birthdays25th August 1819 – Allan Pinkerton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_PinkertonScottish–American detective and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton first became interested in criminal detective work while wandering through the wooded groves around Dundee, looking for trees to make barrel staves, when he came across a band of counterfeiters, who may have been affiliated with the notorious Banditti of the Prairie. After observing their movements for some time he informed the local sheriff, who arrested them. This later led to Pinkerton being appointed, in 1849, as the first police detective in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1850, he partnered with Chicago attorney Edward Rucker in forming the North-Western Police Agency, which later became Pinkerton & Co, and finally Pinkerton National Detective Agency, still in existence today as Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations, a subsidiary of Securitas AB. Pinkerton's business insignia was a wide open eye with the caption "We never sleep." As the US expanded in territory, rail transport increased. Pinkerton's agency solved a series of train robberies during the 1850s, first bringing Pinkerton into contact with George McClellan, then Chief Engineer and Vice President of the Illinois Central Railroad, and Abraham Lincoln, the company's lawyer. When the Civil War began, Pinkerton served as head of the Union Intelligence Service during the first two years, heading off an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland while guarding Abraham Lincoln on his way to Washington, D.C. as well as identifying troop numbers in military campaigns. His agents often worked undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers to gather military intelligence. Pinkerton himself served on several undercover missions as a Confederate soldier using the alias Major E.J. Allen. He worked across the Deep South in the summer of 1861, focusing on fortifications and Confederate plans. This counterintelligence work done by Pinkerton and his agents is comparable to the work done by today's U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agents in which Pinkerton's agency is considered an early predecessor. He was succeeded as Intelligence Service chief by Lafayette Baker; the Intelligence Service was the predecessor of the U.S. Secret Service. His work led to the establishment of the Federal secret service. Despite his agency's later reputation for anti-labor activities, Pinkerton himself was heavily involved in pro-labor politics as a young man. Though Pinkerton considered himself pro-labor, he opposed strikes and distrusted labor unions. He was born in Gorbals, Glasgow.Events of Interest25th August 1957- The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly premiered in Japan - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204691/ A star is born! On this day in 1957 (in Japan), The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly took to the silver screen for a monster of a pairing! Directed by Mitsuo Murayama, the SciFi/Fantasy starred Ryûji Shinagawa and Yoshirô Kitahara; and here's the plot summary: "A ruthless serial killer with a peculiar method of stalking and killing his victims comes face to face with a police officer turned invisible by a scientific experiment. Who will emerge triumphant?" In the late 1950s, in the United States this film was announced, and stills were published, under the English language title "The Murdering Mite." This film shares part of its Japanese title with the Japanese release of the much better-known 1958 U.S. science fiction film The Fly, which was released in Japan as Fear of the Fly Man (ハエ男の恐怖 Hae Otoko no Kyōfu), though with the 'Fly' in "Fly Man" spelled in katakana rather than kanji characters. While both films feature "fly men," The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly actually predates the latter film by almost an entire year.25th August 1989 – Voyager 2 spacecraft makes its closest approach to Neptune, the last planet in the Solar System at the time, due to Pluto being within Neptune's orbit from 1979 to 1999 - https://www.wired.com/2010/08/0825voyager2-neptune/ Voyager 2 makes its closest encounter with Neptune, passing just 3,000 miles above the cloud tops of the most distant planet in our solar system. The Voyager 2 space probe has been our most productive unmanned space voyage. It visited all four of the outer planets and their systems of moons and rings, including the first visits to previously unexplored Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 found four rings and evidence for ring arcs, or incomplete rings, above Neptune. That means all four of the gas giants in our solar system have rings. Neptune's, however, are very meager compared to the magnificent rings around Saturn. In the late 19th century, astronomers thought that an unseen Planet X was influencing the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. The observed positions of the two planets and their calculated positions differed. Among those astronomers convinced of the existence of Planet X was Clyde Tombaugh. In 1930 while scanning areas of the sky for Planet X, he found Pluto. When Voyager 2 flew by Neptune, it took very precise measurements of Neptune's mass and found it to be about 0.5 percent less massive than previous estimates. When the orbits of Uranus and Neptune were recalculated using the more accurate mass figure, it became clear that the imprecise number for Neptune -- and not the gravity of an unseen planet -- had caused the observed orbital discrepancies. After its encounter with Neptune, the spacecraft was rechristened the Voyager Interstellar Mission by NASA to take measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field, plasma and charged-particle environment. But mostly it's searching for the heliopause, the distance at which the solar wind becomes subsumed by the more general interstellar wind.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Five Signs That You’re Experiencing an Anxiety Attack

You might listen to people talking about panic attacks and anxiety attacks like they’re the same thing.  However, this is when things start to get confusing because panic attacks are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), whereas an anxiety attack isn’t. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) (American) or the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) (WHO / European) for health, research and diagnoses purposes.  Using either one will hinge upon their geographical area and in some cases, personal preference.  Think of it as the A to Z book for the brain that pinpoints information on mental illness, for diagnoses purposes in mental health. An anxiety attack and panic attack is a good analogy like the diagnostic books previously mentioned above because both are different but still have similarities between them. Both activate the fight or flight response. Causing an overwhelming rush of physical symptoms with racing heartbeats, and trouble breathing. Indicative of a panic attack in most cases. An anxiety attack often comes in reaction to a stressor. There can be a specific trigger, such as an exam, workplace issues, a health issue, or a relationship Problem. For example, you are walking down a dark alley and hear footsteps. You start to feel fearful, apprehensive at the start, and your body begins to respond to a potential threat from the sound. In your mind, you begin to imagine the worst possible outcome from sexual assault to an alien invasion, and the worry becomes overwhelming and real, which can feel like an attack. Learn more.. In this episode Haylie and Clare discuss complex PTSD and how it differs from PTSD. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) PTSD is generally related to a single event, while complex PTSD is related to a series of events, or one prolonged event. Symptoms of PTSD can arise after a traumatic episode, such as a car collision, an earthquake, or sexual assault. PTSD affects 7–8 percent of Americans at some point in their lives. Symptoms may result from changes in some regions of the brain that deal with emotion, memory, and reasoning. Affected areas may include the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex. The symptoms of complex PTSD can be more enduring and extreme than those of PTSD. Some mental health professionals have started to distinguish between the two conditions, despite the lack of guidance from the DSM-5. A doctor may diagnose complex PTSD when a person has experienced trauma on an ongoing basis. Most frequently, this trauma involves long-term physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. The following are some examples of trauma that can cause complex PTSD: experiencing childhood neglect experiencing other types of abuse early in life experiencing domestic abuse experiencing human trafficking being a prisoner of war living in a region affected by war Is complex PTSD a separate condition? The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) identifies complex PTSD as a separate condition, though the DSM-5 currently does not. Complex PTSD is a relatively recent concept. Because of its variable nature, healthcare professionals may instead diagnose another condition. They may be especially likely to diagnose borderline personality disorder (BPD). Some researchers have identified areas of substantial overlap between complex PTSD and BPD. However, the conditions may also have differences. Authors of a study from 2014 reported that, for example, people with complex PTSD had consistently negative self-conceptions, while people with BPD had self-conceptions that were unstable and changing. People with complex PTSD may experience difficulties with relationships. They tend to avoid others and may feel a lack of connection. BPD can cause a person to swing between idealizing and undervaluing others, resulting in relationship difficulties. It is possible for a person with BPD to also experience complex PTSD, and the combination may result in additional symptoms. A person with complex PTSD may experience symptoms in addition to those that characterize PTSD. Common symptoms of PTSD and complex PTSD include: reliving the trauma through flashbacks and nightmares avoiding situations that remind them of the trauma dizziness or nausea when remembering the trauma hyperarousal, which means being in a continual state of high alert the belief that the world is a dangerous place a loss of trust in the self or others difficulty sleeping or concentrating being startled by loud noises

G., Habegger, L., Cantor, M. N., Staples, J. Abstract: Objective: Large scale next-generation sequencing of population cohorts paired with patients' electronic health records (EHR) provides an excellent resource for the study of gene-disease associations. To validate those associations, researchers often consult databases that identify relationships between genes of interest and relevant disease phenotypes, which we refer to as simply "phenotypes". However, most of these databases contain phenotypes that are not suited for automated analysis of EHR data, which often captured these phenotypes in the form of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. There is a need for a resource that comprehensively provides gene-phenotype mappings in a format that can be used to evaluate phenotypes from EHR. Methods: We built a directed graph database of genes, medical concepts and ICD codes based on a subset of the National Library of Medicine's Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and other resources. To obtain associations between genes and ICD codes, we traversed the defined relationships from gene, variant and disease concepts to ICD codes, resulting in a set of mappings that link specific genes and variants to these ICD codes. Results: Our method created 249,764 mappings between genes and ICD codes, including 27,226 "disease" phenotypes and 222,538 "symptom" phenotypes, and provided mappings for 4,456 unique genes. Paths were validated by manual review of a diverse sample of paths. In a cohort of 92,455 samples, we used these mappings to validate gene-phenotype associations in 32,786 samples where a person had a potentially disease-causing genetic mutation and at least one corresponding diagnosis in their EHR. Conclusion: The concepts and relationships in the UMLS can be used to generate gene-ICD phenotype mappings that are not explicit in the source vocabularies. We were able use these mappings to validate gene-disease associations in a large cohort of sequenced exomes paired with EHR. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Most of us see video games as harmless, inter-generational fun: play Fortnite with the kids (or parents) for a few hours, have some laughs, and get ready for bed. Others can't seem to break away. "For some gamers, they develop this excessive pattern of uncontrollable behavior," says Dr. Paul Weigle, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and the Associate Medical Director of Outpatient Programs at Natchaug Hospital. "They really lose control over their use. That ends up causing big problems in their lives." Earlier this year, the World Health Organization included "gaming disorder" in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). For some in the video game industry, including Kenneth Thompson, an assistant professor-in-residence of game design at the University of Connecticut, the WHO classification is premature. "Research is ongoing for video games as classification as disorder or addiction," Thompson says. "I think it does a real disservice to people who are going through substance abuse issues and are going through addiction programs to use the same terminology for something that isn't the same." Weigle, Thompson and UConn Gaming Club member Ryan Marsh discuss video games and addiction on the latest Capitol Watch podcast.

Imagine an almost seamless transition from ICD-10 to ICD-11, unlike the sturm and drang that characterized the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 – which, finally, after the dust settled, became effective in 2015. Eliminating the speed bumps could happen. The National Committee for Vital Health Statistics (NCVHS) recently sent a letter to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), proposing that the massive agency use sub-regulatory processes to make version updates to the International Classification for Diseases (ICD) in the same way it handles updates to all the other named HIPAA code set standards. Moreover, HCVHS said that HHS should invest now in a project to evaluate ICD-11 and develop a plan that will enable a smooth and transparent transition at the optimal time. Reporting our lead story during this edition of Talk Ten Tuesdays will be Margaret Skurka, past president of the International Federation of Health Information Management Associations, IFHIMA, and the current IFHIMA/AHIMA representative to the World Health Organization (WHO) Family of International Classifications Education and Implementation Committee. Recently the World Health Organization added Gaming Disorder to the 11th International Classification of Diseases ICD-11 3 a tool for diagnosing diseases. Combine this with the many parents dismayed by their childrens obsession with the video game Fortnite, and it seems that the game industrys darkest demons are being exposed. More than two billion people play video games worldwide and in America there are 221 million Americans who play video games. This is where God calls believers to be salt and light. We cannot responsibly exercise this calling to reach all kinds of people including gamers with the truth of Christianity without honestly striving to understand gaming. As image bearers, what place do video games have in our lives? Hundreds of studies in recent years have attempted to ascertain a connection between aggression and violent video games. Despite all this effort, there is no real consensus among researchers on the impact of virtual violence on aggressive behavior. So should Christians play or allow their children to play violent video games? And if many video games, when played in moderation or played socially, can have a positive impact on our lives, how do Christians encourage responsible, age appropriate engagement so that we might capitalize on the best that games have to offer? This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author Drew Dixon about his Postmodern Realities feature article in Volume 41 5 called Virtual Violence, Video Game Addiction, and the Kingdom of God

Video Game Addiction a Mental Disorder, WHO Says

The World Health Organization (WHO) now considers video game addiction a mental health disorder. The WHO listed the addiction as “gaming disorder” to the latest version of its International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The ICD is a guide for doctors and researchers to keep track of and identify illnesses. As described in the ICD, people with gaming disorder display weak control over the frequency, duration, and intensity of playing video games. They also put their hobbies, family, work, or school on the back burner and ignore the negative consequences of their addiction. To be classified as a gaming disorder, the aforementioned symptoms must manifest in a person for at least a year. In the United States, treatment facilities and camps for gaming addiction are rare and expensive. The professionals who handle cases of game addiction are ill-equipped because they are only exposed to patients with anxiety and alcoholism. By adding gaming disorder to the ICD, the WHO is hopeful that health experts will pay more attention to the condition and develop better treatment and preventive measures. Additionally, the organization hopes that insurance companies will be open to covering the costs of gaming disorder treatments. However, many researchers and mental health professionals are skeptical about WHO's decision. They claimed that there is insufficient research to support gaming addiction as a legitimate mental disorder. Some explained that it is dangerous to think that gaming addiction is a disorder in itself. They pointed out that the addiction may be an indication of more serious mental disorders like depression and anxiety. These underlying disorders may be overlooked if mental health professionals focus only on treating gaming addiction alone.

Let's talk tonight about Gaming Addiction. An article was published on January 4th, 2018, by Gamespot.com, in which they called attention to the fact that The World Health Organization plans to add "gaming disorder" in its list of mental health conditions. And I quote: "The World Health Organization, the public health division of the United Nations, has released its newest list of classified diseases--and "gaming disorder" is included. A draft of the WHO's International Classification of Diseases (ICD) describes this as being characterized by a "pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour" online or offline. The description goes on to say that gaming disorders can include the following: "1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); 2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and 3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences." Our regular listeners of this show may be well aware that we do not support the disease model of addiction on this show. Let's start by reviewing how we define Disease and Addiction. We will explain, discuss, and analyze this proposal, and critique their findings with regards to this new declaration. We will review a little bit about the addiction model in general, and how it may or may not actually apply to modern gaming. We look forward to exploring this new development, and helping our listeners understand what it means for gamers and the mental health community.

This week on MIA Radio, we interview Professor Sir Robin Murray. Professor Murray is an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in the Psychosis Service located at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in South London. He is also a Professor of Psychiatric Research at the Institute of Psychiatry. His research covers epidemiology, molecular genetics, neuropsychiatry, neuroimaging, neuropsychology and neuropharmacology.  Professor Murray’s main research interest is finding the causes of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as well as developing better treatments for these disorders. He is perhaps best known for helping to establish the neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia, and for his work on the environmental risk factors relating to schizophrenia, such as obstetric events and cannabis use. In 2011, Professor Murray was awarded a knighthood for services to medicine and he is the second most widely cited psychiatrist in the world outside the USA. In this interview we discuss: •How Professor Murray came to psychiatry and what sparked his interest in research into psychosis. •Professor Murray’s work to counter the concept of schizophrenia as a debilitating brain disease and how we came to appreciate the many factors that may contribute to psychotic illness. •The importance of recognising the influence of social factors in the causes of psychotic illness. •The differences between the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM V) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD 11). •How psychiatric diagnoses compare and contrast to diagnoses in other branches of medicine. •The question of whether schizophrenia is a real entity or purely an artificial construct. •How antipsychotic drugs exert their effects and the mechanisms by which they may lead, in some cases, to dopamine supersensitivity. •How we should be  cautious about the long-term prescribing of antipsychotic drugs. •The effect that limited healthcare resources have on psychiatric diagnoses and treatments. •What the future may hold for research into and treatment options for psychosis. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate if somatoform disorders (SFD) are associated with changes in the normal serum levels of important interleukins, and further, to establish if these changes are related to the presence and severity of alexithymia in patients with SFD. Methods: Twenty-four unmedicated patients who met the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) diagnostic criteria for SFD completed the psychological questionnaire to assess alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale), symptom reporting (SCL-90-R) and diagnostic criteria for SFD (Screening for Somatoform Symptoms scale). Serum concentrations of soluble interleukin 2 receptor alpha(sIL-2R alpha), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12 were determined in patients with SFD and in 9 healthy subjects. Results: In patients with SFD, serum levels of IL-6 (p ! 0.001), IL-10 (p = 0.047) and immunoglobulin E (p = 0.045) were significantly increased in comparison with healthy controls. Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between the level of alexithymia ('total' Toronto Alexithymia Scale score) and the serum levels of sIL-2R alpha (r = -0.538) in SFD. Conclusions: Taken together, these results suggest that SFD, with clinically significant alexithymia, are associated with a reduction in Th1-mediated immune function and an increase in the activation of the Th2 immune function, indicated by the augmented serum levels of IL-6 and IL-10 and elevated immunoglobulin E.
