Why did the bacterium cross the road? To get to the Join the Docs podcast, of course! In this infectiously funny episode, Dr. Nigel Guest, our ever-curious family practitioner, sits down with none other than Yersinia pestis, the infamous bacterium behind the bubonic plague (). With a twinkle in his eye and a stethoscope around his neck, Dr. Guest dives into a conversation that's as infectious as it is informative, exploring the historical havoc wreaked by this notorious, nasty microbe.Ever wondered what it's like to be the life of the pandemic party? Yersinia pestis, doesn't hold back. Reflecting on its "achievements" with a mix of pride and humour, Yersinia boasts about its role in various outbreaks, including the infamous Black Death. "I was the original person to go viral ," the bacterium recounts its glory days, clearly demonstrating it does not know the difference between a virus and a bacterium butspreading faster than a juicy piece of gossip in a small town, and chuckles about its current status in the microbial hall of shame—er, fame. How does one bacterium manage to stay plague-fully relevant for centuries? Yersinia pestis attributes its longevity to a combination of adaptability and a flair for the dramatic. "I've always known how to make an entrance," it says with a wink, "and let's face it, who doesn't love a good comeback story?" The conversation takes a turn for the hilarious as Yersinia shares anecdotes from its plaguey past, including a particularly memorable stint in 14th-century Europe. Is it possible to make a deadly pathogen sound charming? Dr. Nigel Guest certainly thinks so, as he navigates the interview with the skill of a seasoned talk show host. "You've certainly left your mark on history," he says, barely suppressing a chuckle. Yersinia responds with a mischievous grin, "Well, you know what they say, go big or go home!" The episode wraps up with a light-hearted discussion on modern medicine and the bacterium's current status, proving that even the most sinister microbes can have a sense of humour. This episode is a rollicking, germ-spreading ride through time, disease, and laughter, guaranteed to leave you both educated and entertained. So grab your headphones, settle in, and get ready to laugh your way through the plagues of infectious history with Dr. Nigel Guest and the ever-entertaining Yersinia pestis.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Have you ever wondered what Cleopatra's beauty secrets were? In this episode of "Join the Docs," Doctor Nigel Guest and Professor Jonathan Sackier dive headfirst into the ancient world of Cleopatra's skincare regimen. They kick things off with a discussion about her rather unconventional use of turpentine, milk, and honey for skincare. Professor Sackier provides the historical context and potential benefits of these ingredients, while Dr. Guest, wide-eyed and incredulous, peppers him with questions and exclamations of disbelief. What could possibly be the benefits of using turpentine as a beauty aid? Turpentine? Isn't that what you use to clean paintbrushes? Well, Cleopatra was clearly a master of 'brush' strokes in more ways than one!The Docs highlight the exfoliating properties of donkey milk—yes, donkey milk!—and the soothing benefits of honey, milking every possible joke with parallels to modern skin care practices. Did Cleopatra really bathe in asses milk? Professor Sackier has the exfoliating wonders of donkey milk explained to him by Dr. Guest while both imagine Cleopatra surrounded by a herd of donkeys, leading to a burst of laughter. Talk about a moo-ving experience!Did Cleopatra ever got tempted to snack on her skincare products? How might this beauty regime resonate today? With all that honey, who wouldn't be tempted to take a little taste? Cleopatra must have had quite the sweet routine! The episode is both entertaining and educational, offering a unique perspective on ancient beauty rituals. By the end, you'll be both informed and amused, with a newfound appreciation for the lengths to which people have gone in the name of beauty. Who knew skincare could be such a 'milk and honey' affair?—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Cheese Hazards - To Brie or Not to Brie

What happens when you mix a surgeon, a family practitioner, and a cheese wheel? In this podcast episode, Dr. Nigel Guest and Professor Jonathan Sackier   set their sights on the peculiar topic of fromage-related injuries, a subject that might seem cheesy at first but proves to be a goldmine of gouda laughs and unexpected giggles. They kick things off with a deep dive into the annual cheese rolling event at Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire, a tradition that's as dangerous as it is delicious. With a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese hurtling down a steep hill, chased by a crowd of comestible-keen-cheesy crackheads, it's no surprise that injuries are as common as the cheese itself. Brie prepared, from sprained ankles to broken bones, The Docs share side-splitting anecdotes about the brave (or perhaps foolhardy) participants who risk life and limb for the “grater” glory of cheese. Ever wondered how a 1960s TV chef could spice up a medical podcast? The hosts certainly did! The Docs take a delightful detour into the history of Fanny Craddock, the flamboyant TV chef known for her extravagant cooking shows, and liberally applied lipstick  and her jolly husband Johnny. Professor Sackier and Dr. Guest recount some of Fanny's most outrageous recipes, drawing hilarious parallels between the chaos of her cooking shows and the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies. Whether it's a soufflé gone wrong or a patient with a cheese-related injury, the hosts find humour in the unexpected and the absurd. How do two medical professionals keep their audience in stitches while discussing serious topics? Through their infectious chemistry and cheddar sharp wit, of course! The Docs provide entertaining insights and their humorous take on the quirks of the medical world make for an enjoyable and informative listening experience that's sure to leave listeners grinning from ear to ear. This episode is a reminder that cheese can be more than an afternoon snack. The Docs inspire us to believe that you can find fun in anything, but above all be careful, stay healthy and remember in queso emergency, always contact a professional.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Medical Marijuana, A Deep Dive into a Taboo Medicine that Really Works For Patients, This Week On Straight Talk with Doc Morris

Straight Talk with Doc Morris

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 5, 2020 27:55

This Week On Straight Talk with Doc Morris, The Doc Discusses the Taboo that is Medical Marijuana. You probably already know the basics about marijuana: It’s a green, brown, or gray mix of dried leaves, flowers, seeds, and stems from the hemp plant, also known as Cannabis stavis. It’s typically rolled up and smoked like a cigarette, but it can also be put in a pipe. People may also consume it in food, inhale it through a vaporizer, or spray it under the tongue. Although doctors believe that cannabinoids, the active ingredients in medical marijuana, are responsible for its benefits, researchers still don’t know exactly how medical marijuana works. There’s no question that it does work, however, for the patients who rely on it. Medical marijuana is commonly used for:Pain reliefAnxietyAppetite stimulationNausea and vomitingShinglesWhat are the most important cannabinoids?Researchers have found that there are 5 major cannabinoids that help medical marijuana patients find symptom relief. Each has different effects, and those effects help reinforce the effects of the others. The 5 most important cannabinoids are:THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)CBD (cannabidiol)CBN (cannabinol)CBC (cannabichromene)CBG (cannabigerol)Knowing the effects of each can help you understand which medical marijuana strains are best for treating your symptoms. If you’re most interested in physical pain relief, for example, you may be best off using medical marijuana that’s high in CBD and low in THC, because CBD reduces the psychological effects of THC. Dr. Morris and his team can help you discover exactly what’s right for you.Is medical marijuana approved by the Food and Drug Administration? While the FDA has not approved the marijuana plant as a medicine, it has approved 3 medications that contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill or liquid form. As scientists continue to study ways that patients can safely use THC and other marijuana ingredients as medicine, it’s likely that more medicines will be approved for use. What are the rules for medical marijuana in Florida? In the United States, cannabis is considered a controlled substance that requires special licensing for use. In Florida, medical cannabis licensing is issued through the Office of Compassionate Use following diagnosis by a qualified physician. After an initial consultation, physical exam, and full patient history, Dr. Morris can diagnose qualified patients and prescribe medical marijuana if he believes it’s an appropriate treatment. Without a proper diagnosis, it isn’t possible to secure a medical marijuana card in the state of Florida. For Medical Marijuana inquiries & appointments, please schedule online or call 239-360-2709.Morris Medical CenterWeight Loss Physician & Family Practitioner located in Fort Myers, FL & LaBelle, FLMorris Medical Center is a physician-owned and operated medical facility in Fort Myers, Florida. The month of September is National Cholesterol Education Awareness Month. Heart disease was the number one killer of Americans and Stroke was the number 4 killer of Americans in 2011. Having high cholesterol is a risk factor for both.In This Episode Doc Morris takes a Deep Dive into the Causes and Treatments of High Cholesterol. He discusses when you should be concerned, and what you should do about it. Cholesterol is important to many bodily functions like the production of cell membranes and some hormones. Having too much of the "bad" cholesterol and not enough of the "good", can put us at risk for coronary heart disease. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as "bad" cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as "good" cholesterol. LDL (bad) cholesterol can slowly build up in the walls of the arteries of the heart and brain. Atherosclerosis is a condition where plaque, a thick, hard substance can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. If an artery is blocked, a heart attack or stroke can result. High levels of HDL (good), at least > 40 mg/dL, protect against heart attacks. Some experts believe that HDL carries cholesterol away for arteries and back to the liver to be broken down, while others think it removes the cholesterol from the arterial plaque. Either way, studies support that an elevated level of HDL actually protects the arteries in the heart, the brain and throughout our bodies.Morris Medical CenterWeight Loss Physician & Family Practitioner located in Fort Myers, FL & LaBelle, FLMorris Medical Center is a physician-owned and operated medical facility in Fort Myers, Florida. Neuropathic pain is a pain condition that’s usually chronic. It’s usually caused by chronic, progressive nerve disease, and it can also occur as the result of injury or infection. If you have chronic neuropathic pain, it can flare up at any time without an obvious pain-inducing event or factor. Acute neuropathic pain, while uncommon, can occur as well. Typically, non-neuropathic pain (nociceptive pain) is due to an injury or illness. For example, if you drop a heavy book on your foot, your nervous system sends signals of pain immediately after the book hits. With neuropathic pain, the pain isn’t typically triggered by an event or injury. Instead, the body just sends pain signals to your brain unprompted. People with this pain condition may experience shooting, burning pain. The pain may be constant, or may occur intermittently. A feeling of numbness or a loss of sensation is common, too. Neuropathic pain tends to get worse over time.Doc Morris Also Covers other types of Pain and the Management of various types of Pain. Today Hawaii reached a significant milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic as we surpassed 106 confirmed cases of the disease in our islands. As the coronavirus continues to spread, putting thousands at risk for developing COVID-19, it's hard to imagine when this will all end. We want to know if we're doing enough and if enough, will EVER be enough.   At the forefront of Hawaii's COVID-19 task force, is Lt. Governor Josh Green. He's an outspoken healthcare professional who admittedly has a hard time switching roles between doctor and politician. As a result, at times, he's found himself at odds with the Governor. We talk to the Lieutenant Governor about finding that balance, and his passion for helping save lives. Also joining us on the show is Dr. Scott Miscovich. Dr. Miscovich has been at the forefront of Hawaii's prevention campaign by conducting the first drive-through testing sites. We ask what that process is like, and cringe at the answer.  Dr. Josh Green is a local doctor, husband, and father of two who has spent his life caring for Hawaii families. After completing his medical training, Green joined the National Health Corps and started his life's work as a family physician and ER doctor in rural hospitals and clinics on the Big Island. In 2009 he was named "Hawaii Physician of the Year."   Dr. Scott Miscovich is a Family Practitioner with several offices and clinics across the state. His staff volunteers countless hours and donates tests for those who are uninsured. He believes everyone who needs a coronavirus test should get it. To date, his team has tested thousands of symptomatic patients on several islands. He's answered questions for and counseled thousands more. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/maleko-and-flash/support

It is not uncommon for patients to develop romantic feelings for their caregivers. Managing these emotions is critical. When these emotions are mismanaged, bad outcomes often result.A family practice doctor was treating a husband and his wife for an assortment of challenges. To make a long story short - the patient's wife (who was also the doctor's patient) fell in love with him. Did this development resolve healthfully? If it did, we wouldn't be discussing it. Paid advertisement “What we’re seeing is that doctors are making small changes and that means that we are seeing policy changes from a grass roots level.” Dr. Adam Nally Paid advertisement Finding a good doctor who understands the key role that nutrition plays in their patient’s health can be extremely challenging nowadays. Since most medical professionals are lucky if they’ve had just a few hours to two weeks worth of education on the role diet plays in health during their medical school training, many don’t know how to adequately help their patients dealing with chronic health problems like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cholesterol and weight management. These topics are all a passionate focus of attention by a Surprise, Arizona-based family medicine practitioner named Dr. Adam Nally from Nally Family Practice. He blogs about how he routinely uses a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet to help his patients maximize their health where all other forms of traditional medicine has failed. He blogs at DocMuscles.com and is one of the strongest medical proponents of ketogenic diets you’ll ever hear. Dr. Nally was invited by our host Jimmy Moore to be one of the featured speakers on the 2014 Low-Carb Cruise which we shared on this podcast a couple of months back. But the video and audio footage with Dr. Nally became corrupted and unusable. To remedy that, Jimmy invited Dr. Nally to come on the podcast today for a fresh interview that we know you’re gonna love. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Nally discuss how the interest in low-carbohydrate nutrition is becoming more attractive to physicians, the surprised response he gets from his patients as he teaches Paleo-based low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic principles, how the Internet has made patients much more savvy from a medical health perspective, why the low-carb message isn’t embraced wholeheartedly for people with diabetes, the progression of diabetes that happens over time, how fat-phobia is driving the policies about nutrition and health, why patient data matter doesn’t seem to matter to the policymakers, the lack of will and financial ability to do a credible nutritional health study, why insulin resistance seems to be completely ignored as a key marker in chronic disease, how blood pressure drops like a rock when you start low-carb, the cascade of improvements in health markers that happen when you cut your carbohydrate intake, the incredible improvements in the key cholesterol markers like triglycerides on a low-carb diet, there is no drug that will drop triglycerides as much as low-carb, what’s going on with patients who don’t see results despite eating ketogenic, how most of the artificial sweeteners (especially Ace-K commonly found in most diet sodas) and fake creamers won’t raise blood sugar but will raise insulin levels, why food quality is such an incredible aspect of a good low-carb, ketogenic diet, the disconnect with what real food is, how he uses aquaponics to create a sustainable food supply, how stress impacts people with an insulin response like eating 10 slices of bread instead of one, the strategies he tells patients to reduce the stress, why exercise has to become an enjoyable part of your life, how he sees atherosclerotic plaque (CIMT) in his patients reduced with a low-carb ketogenic diet, and the amplification of side effects that happen when a low-carb dieter takes a statin drug.   Paid advertisement

Interview with Dr. Alexa Mieses, family medicine resident, mentor & writer [Show Summary] Do you want to be a clinician? Are you concerned about your ability to gain acceptance to med school? Listen in to today’s interview with the author of The Heartbeat of Success: A Med Student's Guide to Med School Admissions, Dr. Alexa Mieses. The journey of a family practitioner, author, advocate [Show Notes] Our guest today is Dr. Alexa Mieses, who has an MD and MPH and in her own words, "strives to have influence beyond the confines of the examination room." She is a resident physician in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. In addition to providing clinical care to marginalized patient populations, Dr. Mieses' interests include population health, increasing diversity in the physician workforce, mentoring premedical students, writing, and research.” Dr. Mieses graduated from CUNY magna cum laude in 2011. She then studied for her MD/MPH at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 2012 to 2016 and graduated with distinction in Research and Excellence in Family Medicine. She has been a Family Medicine Resident at Duke University since 2016 and has earned the Harvey Estes, MD Memorial Award for Leadership and Advocacy. Can you tell us about your background outside of medicine? Where you grew up? What do you like to do for fun? [2:45] I am a native New Yorker. I grew up in NYC in Queens and had a very interesting childhood. I am bi-racial - my dad is from the Dominican Republic and my mom is American of Italian/Irish descent, so I grew up in a very ethnically diverse family and neighborhood, which shaped who I am and what I have done in my career. I have been a writer since childhood and have incorporated that into my career and leisure time. I really enjoy spending time with friends and family, and I am a mom of three pets – two cats and a dog. How did you know you wanted to be a doctor? [3:57] I really feel like medicine is my calling, and it’s something I’ve thought about since I was a kid. I was first interested in science when I was 3 or 4 and told my parents that I wanted to be a marine biologist. I was a big nerd and loved watching National Geographic specials, and I would read encyclopedias. I was always fascinated by life science. My mom actually got me interested in medicine – not because she is a doctor, and in fact neither one of my parents went to college. My mom had diabetes, but I remember helping her check her blood sugar and going with her to her doctor and seeing the positive relationship she had with her doctor and wanting to have that same positive impact on someone’s life. What was the hardest part of the med school application process for you? [5:26] I remember that it was a marathon and not a sprint. In hindsight I feel like I lived, breathed, and slept my dream of becoming a physician, which meant I was very intentional about what I did. For example, I was accepted to both a science high school and a performing arts high school. I probably would have been fine going to either, but at the time it felt do or die, and so I chose the science high school. As another example, in my first and second years of college I was working fulltime in addition to going to school fulltime so I had to make serious decisions about the type of job I took that would allow me enough time to study. So it was all about being really thoughtful and intentional about things. Every decision you make has the ability to make your path easier or more challenging. I would never want to go through the agony of being an applicant again, though the good news is it gets easier each step along the way. Being a premed student is by far the hardest. You took a gap year between undergrad and med school. What did you do and are you happy you did it? [9:00] I knew early on that clinical medicine alone would not allow me to have the kind of impact I wanted to have on my community.
