Episode #149 In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community: I've heard you've written an amazing book called, “The Cancer Code.” I haven't read it yet, but wanted to hear your thoughts on broccolini being an anti-cancer food. I understand it contains Sulforaphane, Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), Glucosinolates, Vitamin C, and fiber. Should I concentrate on cruciferous vegetables, like broccolini, or just work on getting a balanced diet? What are your thoughts? [02:14] I have a little confusion about the difference between taking metformin and injecting insulin. From what I've read in your books it's that insulin is going to make type 2 diabetes worse in the long run. I already know that that's not the answer to reverse type two diabetes and I'm not taking either one. Like insulin, will metformin also be detrimental to treat T2D or is there a difference between one and the other - and why, please? [05:27] What do they mean by 'immunoreactive insulin'? [12:06] Does the liver respond negatively to the ingestion of supplements? In other words, do the supplements cause any changes in my insulin? [14:52] I started TRE (beginning Jan this year) at about 135 pounds and am now doing 24-hour fasts with OMAD and 2MAD. I have completed a 42-hour fast and will probably try another one this week. I am eating whole foods. Avocados are my miracle!!! I do not snack between meals. My body is still releasing weight with what I am doing now and I feel I have another 5 pounds to go. How will I know when to stop shedding the weight? [18:13] Can you clarify the role of physical activity and exercise in weight loss? In The Obesity Code, you shared that a number of rigorous clinical trials demonstrate that exercise contributes minimally, if at all, to weight loss. However, zone 2 exercise is promoted for its'fat burnin' benefits. I plan to continue exercising for its health-promoting benefits but I would really like to hear your take on the extent to which it can assist with weight loss, and what exercise types you recommend for weight loss. [21:56] On non-fasting days, what is Dr. Fung's chosen style of eating? Role of Stem Cells in the BodyThe versatile Stem Cells serve as the body's internal repair and regeneration system, orchestrating a symphony of healing processes that keep us functioning optimally. Imagine a team of construction workers rebuilding a damaged structure. Stem Cells play this exact role in our bodies. What harms our Stem Cells.Drinking too much alcohol.Smoking and general all kinds of drugs. Diabetes or high blood sugar.Lifestyle Factors.Have an active lifestyle & work out often.Regular physical activity promotes the release of growth factors that activate stem cells, contributing to tissue repair and regeneration.Sleep and Stress ManagementAdequate sleep and stress reduction techniques are essential for maintaining optimal stem cell function. High-stress levels and sleep deprivation can hinder stem cell activity.Gut-Brain ConnectionA healthy gut microbiome is closely linked to stem cell health. Consuming fermented vegetables/fruits/soya beans, probiotics and prebiotics can help maintain a balanced gut, positively impacting stem cells.Balancing Stem Cell Production.Achieving a well-rounded diet and lifestyle that includes these stem cell-friendly factors can promote a healthier stem cell population within your body.Foods to AvoidProcessed foods, excessive sugar, and trans fats can harm Stem Cells and impair their functionality. All Vegetable oils, including virgin olive oil, because they produce the most toxic aldehyde in the body from its unsaturated fatty acids, are worse for digestion and good for getting dementia… All kinds of fish, meat, and poultry, because they make the body acid, destroy the healthy gut microbiome, and are toxic. The animals consume (most consumed fishes are farmed fish) toxic food, drugs, and antibiotics.Reducing the consumption of these items is vital for overall health. Best food for stem cells: Ginger root and turmeric: typically utilized in Thai cooking to help settle indigestions. Ginger is understood to combat inflammation by reducing polyunsaturated fatty acids that can activate an inflammatory reaction. Mushrooms: High in micronutrients known as polyphenols. These nutrients are Stem Cell enhancers and can be found in plant-based diets. They help protect and cleanse liver cells from harmful contaminants that can break down hormones in the body.Seed and Nuts: Excellent snacks filled with protein and beneficial fats that keep you feeling full longer and assist in eliminating any cravings. Seeds consist of anti-inflammatory plant sterols, while nuts are filled with alpha-linolenic acid, a type of inflammatory combating omega-3 fat. Flax seeds for omega-3 fat.Cruciferous veggies: Cauliflower, Broccoli, kale, cabbage, bok choy, garden cress & Brussels sprouts are some of the best foods for stem cell growth. These veggies have lots of the sulforaphane compound, which boots enzymes in the liver that combat harmful contaminants we may digest or take in. These green leafy veggies are likewise packed with Indole-3-carbinol particles that help reduce inflammatory agents in the bloodstream.Berries: Blackberries, goji berries, pomegranate, blueberries, and raspberries all contain superoxide dismutase (SOD), a powerful antioxidant. This enzyme has incredible inflammation-reducing flavonoids and is excellent for lowering oxidative-associated stress, which is an essential consideration for optimum liver health and helps avoid joint pain. Abstract: Centromere protein A (CENP-A) is a centromere-specific protein that determines kinetochore positioning and the accuracy of chromosome segregation. Despite its recognized importance in maintaining mitotic fidelity, the molecular details of CENP-A regulation in mitosis are still obscure. We performed a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study of the cell cycle-arresting indole terpenoid mimic JP18 and identified two more potent analogues, (+)-6-Br-JP18 and (+)-6-Cl-JP18. Tubulin was identified as a potential protein target of these two halogenated analogues by using the drug affinity responsive target stability (DARTS) based method. X-ray crystallographic analysis determined that (+)-6-Br-JP18 and (+)-6-Cl-JP18 bind to the colchicine-binding site of beta-tubulin. We further found that treatment of cancer cells with microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs), including these two compounds, upregulated CENP-A by destabilizing Cdh1, an E3 ubiquitin ligase component. The mechanistic study revealed that Cdh1 mediates proteolysis of CENP-A in mitosis, specifying the role of Cdh1 in maintaining mitotic fidelity. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.21.533660v1?rss=1 Authors: Ding, Y., Yanagi, K., Yang, F., Callaway, E., Cheng, C., Hensel, M., Menon, R., Alaniz, R., Lee, K., Jayaraman, A. Abstract: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in Western countries. There is growing evidence that dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota and disruption of microbiota-host interactions contribute to the pathology of NAFLD. We previously demonstrated that gut microbiota derived tryptophan metabolite indole-3-acetate (I3A) was decreased in both cecum and liver of high-fat diet-fed mice and attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokines in macrophages and TNF-a and fatty acid induced inflammatory responses in an aryl-hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) dependent manner in hepatocytes. In this study, we investigated the effect of orally administered I3A in a mouse model of diet induced NAFLD. Western diet (WD)-fed mice given sugar water (SW) with I3A showed dramatically decreased serum ALT, hepatic TG, liver steatosis, hepatocyte ballooning, lobular inflammation, and hepatic production of inflammatory cytokines, compared to WD-fed mice given only SW. Metagenomic analysis show that I3A administration did not significantly modify the intestinal microbiome, suggesting that I3As beneficial effects likely reflect the metabolites direct actions on the liver. Administration of I3A partially reversed WD induced alterations of liver metabolome and proteome, notably, decreasing expression of several enzymes in hepatic lipogenesis and {beta}-oxidation. Mechanistically, we also show that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) mediates the anti-inflammatory effects of I3A in macrophages. The potency of I3A in alleviating liver steatosis and inflammation clearly demonstrates its potential as a therapeutic modality for preventing the progression of steatosis to NASH. Animal model studies have shown that when vegetables containing glucoraphanin are chewed or swallowed, another compound called sulforaphane appears on the scene and kicks enzymes into action to take up pollutants and clear them from the body in urine. In other words, sulforaphane seems to act like fuel for the body's own trash collection and disposal services. Most of the health benefits of broccoli sprouts come from their high level of glucoraphanin. Your body converts this compound into sulforaphane, which protects your cells against inflammation and a wide variety of diseases. Some common health benefits of broccoli sprouts include:Cancer PreventionMany studies over the years have confirmed that eating cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and cabbage) raw or lightly cooked can protect against a number of cancers. Salads get a bad name because when a lot of people think of salads they think green lettuce, tomatoes, a few carrots, and salad dressings, they are even selling salads in bags now to make things easier, but if you are not careful, it is easy to make a salad inflammatory by adding things that can make it taste good but void of the nutrients needed. On this week's episode of Living Inflammation Free, we talk about building a good, tasty savory, healthy salad. To get you started we have a few recipes to help you out, and we even teach you how to make your own oil-free salad dressing; believe it or not, it is really simple. Do you have questions about your wellness routine and boundaries? We are all about community and wellness in this episode so let's jump right into it. Love them or loathe them Brussels sprouts are synonymous with Christmas and so we thought an entire episode dedicated to them would be suitably festive. They also pack a pretty mean punch flavour and nutrition wise being that they are high in powerful compounds such as Indole-3-carbinols and sulforaphane that have been linked to myriad positive health benefits. They are also rich in raffinose which, although good for our gut bugs, is kind of the reason for their less…erm..'festive' gassy side effects. We wanted to test Brussels sprouts to the max so in this challenge both of us have to eat Brussels sprouts every day for 12 days. They can be cooked in any way we want but we do need to have them daily. Does this reaffirm Rose's adoration of the little green fellas or does she actually feel green herself after 12 days straight on the sprouts? And can Eve actually complete one challenge this season? (22:22) https://runnershealthhub.com/shop/our-favourite-food-brands/ (Our favourite prepared for you soups ) (24:59) Cauliflower, Kale and Cannellini Bean Soup Cauliflower and Kale are very supportive of female hormone balance - because they contain glucosinolates which are converted to indole-3-carbinol, which has a potent hormone regulatory effect. The liver plays a key role in the production and clearing of hormones from the body - Indole-3-carbinol supports the liver detoxification processes through stimulating enzymes required to remove hormones (and other toxins) from the body. This recipe also includes TURMERIC. Runners may consider using turmeric as anti-inflammatory support for exercise-induced muscle damage, for example after hill drills or as a natural alternative to painkillers. Cannellini Beans are a great source of protein (1 cup contains 15g protein) and they are high in fibre. Also, they contain a range of vitamins, minerals and isoflavones – supportive of balancing female hormones. (28:40) Beetroot Apple and Coconut Soup Nutritional Properties of Beetroot – contain nitrates which help promote blood flow and they have been shown to help dilate blood vessels. Nitrate helps to enable an increase and efficient flow of oxygen through the blood vessels, which clearly is going to provide us with more energy and for our running. Beet greens are also nutrient dense providing calcium, iron and vitamin C. This would be a good soup to have 2 hours before a training run. (32:53) Mushroom and Chestnut Soup Use prepared vacuum-packed chestnuts which are available all year round, Chestnuts are a rich source of carbohydrate, vitamin C, folate and have lots of trace vitamins and minerals too, and contain some protein 2.4g/100g. Mushrooms are one of the few food sources of vitamin D and they contain betaglucans which are great immunomodulators so important to protect against infections of any kind. Soups may be a good addition to a runner's food plan so long as they are Nutrient dense and made of natural ingredients Have a balance of Macro and Micronutrients in line with plate balance concepts or your training strategy 2. Making a Soup can be a time saver if prepared in advance and may be used as a meal replacement, addition to a meal or as a snack – remember to consider the energy (calorific value of a soup) within your overall energy...

Today's episode is part of an end of year special series. I am resharing some of my most actionable episodes to help you reduce pain on your period and pain flares in general, and to balance your hormones for better periods, less PMS and healthier cycles. I am sharing these episodes because this time of year is often when some of our endo management strategies can go out of the window (and understandably so!). We might have more sugar, less sleep, more alcohol and more blood sugar dysregulation, and as a result, these can all raise inflammation and give our bodies a hard time when it comes to clearing old and excess hormones. So come January or maybe sooner, we tend to have more PMS, worse periods and more pain. So these episodes are designed to provide you with some tips you can quickly implement if you're worried about your upcoming period, or you're feeling rough and need some tips to improve your symptoms. Now of course, it's natural that we want to indulge a bit over Christmas, and so these episodes are not about telling you to be a saint. Instead, they're about practices you can throw in that can just help lessen some of the impact. I am releasing a couple so you can choose strategies you think will help you most and so you have options, but you certainly don't have to try them all! And whilst I'm here, if you find that you want to learn more about how to eat for endo and for hormone balance, or you get to the end of the festive period and you really just want to improve your systems, I now have my Nutrition for Endo Masterclasses, which are available to buy all year round, unlike my courses. Lucky for you, they're still discounted because I haven't had time to change the prices, so you can still get each masterclass for £29.99 or you can buy the bundle for £50. You could also ask for them as a Christmas present! Finally, thank you for listening to this podcast this year, and for sticking with me even with my sporadic release dates as I navigate all of these new courses and offerings with recording my free content. I am wishing you a wonderful festive break (if you celebrate) and a very happy New Year. So, without further ado, let's get to today's episode. I really hope it helps you manage some of your symptoms over this festive period. Seven Foods To Alleviate PMS with Endometriosis Bloating? Anxiety? Tearfulness? Painful breasts? If you experience any of these symptoms, you likely experience PMS in the lead up to your period. Even though PMS is very common, it doesn't mean it's just something we have to live with - especially when we're dealing with endometriosis as well. In fact, PMS is caused by hormonal imbalances, often oestrogen dominance or excess oestrogen and sometimes low progesterone - and when we get these into balance, a lot of our endo symptoms ease too! So this week, I wanted to share with your seven foods that you can add in during your luteal phase (the phase after ovulation, before your period) that contain wonderful nutrients that have been shown to alleviate PMS and support healthy hormone balance… Leafy greens for magnesium, calcium and potassium. You guys must know by now how much I love magnesium! It helps to alleviate cramps, aids in oestrogen detoxification but also progesterone production and reduces bloating. Potassium additionally supports bloating, which is another bonus considering so many of you reach out to tell me this is one of your worse symptoms. Finally, in research calcium has been shown to help with PMS symptoms too! Add to smoothies, salads and whatever you're having for dinner - think leafy greens with each meal. Nuts and seeds, particularly sunflower seeds, sesame (tahini is best here as sesame seeds are often too small to chew and pass through undigested) and pumpkin seeds. Nuts and seeds and these three in particular are rich in magnesium, and zinc which supports healthy progesterone levels and good levels of vitamin E, which has been shown to help alleviate period pain and PMS. Add nut butter to your porridge, overnight oats and smoothies and drizzle tahini over your veggies. Protein for B6, including organic free range and pasture raised chicken and turkey, organic grass-fed beef, fish, lentils and chickpeas. B6 helps to keep blood sugar levels stable (in turn, keeping hormones balanced and anxiety and fatigue at bay) and has actually been shown to reduce PMS and depressive symptoms, and is truly a crucial vitamin for healthy hormonal balance! Try a chickpea curry for dinner and perhaps wild caught fish or another animal protein at lunch with lots of veggies and some healthy complex carbs and fat. Sweet potatoes, squash and beetroot (and all other root veggies) actually help to raise serotonin levels in our brain thanks to their complex carbohydrate content. Our feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin works closely with oestrogen during the first half of our cycle, and when oestrogen lowers in our second half our mood can take a bit of a hit - especially if our progesterone levels aren't high enough. Eating root veggies with a good serving of protein and fat improve our mood, boost our energy and keep our blood sugar levels stable. Root vegetables also contain hormone loving B vitamins, calcium and magnesium - all great for balancing hormones and alleviating PMS. Try steaming and freezing root vegetables for smoothies or making up a lentil and beetroot salad. Peppers and other vitamin C rich foods like berries and broccoli can actually help to increase progesterone levels. Low progesterone levels can lead to PMS, anxiety, low moods, short cycles and pre-menstrual spotting. Try a salad of leafy greens, broccoli, peppers and lentils for a hit of vitamin C, magnesium and B6! Kidney beans, black beans, adzuki beans and other beans for B vitamins. B vitamins are some of the foundational nutrients behind healthy hormones - they ensure you're making healthy amounts, keep oestrogen in check, support progesterone if it's low and so much more that I'll have to do a whole podcast on them. In short, they can help alleviate PMS symptoms by making sure any excess or old oestrogen is cleared out and that you have a healthy level of progesterone in your luteal phase. Try an Italian bean salad with rocket, pumpkin seed pesto, adzuki beans, borlotti beans, olives, red onion, tomatoes, pepper, artichokes and olive oil! Broccoli sprouts, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables for healthy oestrogen elimination. Broccoli and broccoli sprouts contain DIM and sulforaphane which support the liver to break down oestrogen in a healthy way and therefore lowers any chance of PMS symptoms. Throw a big handful or half a cup of broccoli sprouts in your smoothies or on salads, and try adding cauliflower rice to your chickpea curry. Even just adding one or two of these foods in on a daily basis could make a difference! Try making a meal plan or some meal ideas with any of the above suggestions and track how your PMS symptoms over a few cycles to see if things change. Let's get social! I am wishing you a wonderful festive break (if you celebrate) and a very happy New Year. So, without further ado, let's get to today's episode. I really hope it helps you manage some of your symptoms over this festive period. Seven Foods to Alleviate Oestrogen Dominance with Endometriosis If you've listened to my podcast recently, you've likely heard a lot about oestrogen dominance or excess oestrogen and the problems these two imbalances can bring. Oestrogen in itself isn't a ‘bad' hormone - it's a wonderful hormone that plays a crucial role in our menstrual cycle and our overall health. But too much or too high in relation to progesterone is where the problems arise, and these problems can make our experience of endo worse. So what is oestrogen dominance? Oestrogen dominance occurs when the ratio of oestrogen to progesterone is too high, this can happen when progesterone is low, oestrogen is high or both! Excess oestrogen is when there is too much oestrogen circulating the body, and this would be likely cause oestrogen dominance, providing of course that progesterone isn't also too high (which in my experience with clients at least, is generally less common). Why does oestrogen dominance occur? We deep dive into this topic in other interviews and episodes (so check the links below), but to give you an overview, here are some of the common causes: Stress Imbalanced blood sugar Gut health issues Deficiencies, such as zinc Heavy alcohol consumption Overburdened liver Xenoestrogens Whilst taking a holistic approach looking at all of these areas is advisable, eating certain foods can help your body to remove any old or excess oestrogen and adding these foods in can be a great way to get started with healing any imbalances. Here are seven of my favourite foods for alleviating oestrogen dominance with endometriosis: Dandelion root tea or coffee to help support the liver with clearing out old and excess oestrogen. Be careful that you're not buying a caffeinated dandelion and coffee blend - we're looking for dandelion alone. You can drink it as a herbal tea or buy it roasted, then grind and have as coffee! It makes a lovely black coffee or latte. Broccoli sprouts provide a big, concentrated dose of SGS (sulforaphane glucosinolate) , a plant compound that also helps the liver to detoxify oestrogen and break it down in a healthy way Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cabbage and Brussel sprouts aid oestrogen detoxification. The active compound in cruciferous veggies is a nutrient called I3C (indole-3-cabinol), which further breaks down into SGS (sulforaphane glucosinolate) and DIM (diindolymethane) and both play a big role in supporting the liver with oestrogen detoxification. In fact, these nutrients are so powerful that you may recognise them - they're often found in oestrogen clearance supplements! Probiotic foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and yoghurt help create a healthy gut microbiome and ensure that the bacteria which helps to eliminate oestrogen, the estrobolome, is well supported and that beta-glucuronidase, the enzyme that reactivates oestrogen (causing it to be reabsorbed into the blood stream), is prevented from getting too high. A caveat here is that if you have SIBO you may find probiotic foods aggravating. I would start slowly with one tablespoon and increase to tolerance over time. B6 foods such turkey, fish, seeds, nuts like pistachios, lentils, eggs, and a moderate amount of organic pasture-raised red meat helps to detoxify old and excess oestrogen and raise progesterone levels. Lignans from nuts and seeds, particularly pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and potentially flax (if you respond well to it) help bind and remove oestrogen. Flax can have weak oestrogenic effects, and is often recommended to help lower oestrogen dominance symptoms . However, I recommend being mindful here as I am not the only practitioner to have witnessed endo symptoms and oestrogen dominance symptoms worsening from flax, so I would just see how you personally respond. Having said that, lots of doctors, nutritionists and health coaches see an improvement, but just have an awareness when you try and if you try flax. Hopefully it works well for you! Let's get social!
What is indole? What do we use it for? Last week I finished going over biochemicals for gram positive cocci. In this week I start with biochemicals for gram negative rods: indole.
Though many men worry about producing too little testosterone, many deal with elevated estrogen. In either case, the physical and mental health effects can be the same. Natural compounds like chrysin may be part of a solution, as chrysin may act as an aromatase inhibitor, reducing the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. Research shows it offers numerous other health benefits as well. What is chrysin? Chrysin is a naturally occurring polyphenol. You can extract it from: honeypropolisbitter melonwild Himalayan pearpassionflowersilver lindensome types of geranium To date, research has focused on chrysin ingestion alone. Whether it would provide any topical benefit remains to be seen. Chrysin Health Benefits Though most people learn of chrysin as an aromatase inhibitor, it affects many other aspects of health as well. Aromatase inhibition Excess estrogen in men or women contributes to physique, performance, and health problems. Like low testosterone levels, in men, excess estrogen contributes to gynecomastia (a.k.a. moobs) and other female physical characteristics. It may also increase body fat storage in the arms and hips and compromise muscle growth. Excess estrogen contributes to breast cancer, endometriosis, and difficulty improving body composition, strength, and physical performance in women. Chrysin may reduce the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and diindolylmethane (DIM) are two other popular natural products that may reduce aromatization. While they seem to be effective in some people, they don't seem to do much for me. That prompted me to investigate chrysin. Periodically, I develop mild gynecomastia on the left side of my chest. It seems to coincide with increased sun exposure, which increases vitamin D and may drive up testosterone production, which may increase testosterone aromatization to estrogen. In some men, as total testosterone levels rise, some of that extra testosterone gets converted to estrogen and can lead to undesirable effects. For me, my left nipple gets sore and firm. In the winter, it seems to go away. Animal studies and in vitro research shows chrysin does act as an aromatase inhibitor. However, there's very little in vivo research at this point. That said, it is very safe, so I ordered some to experiment on my own. Unfortunately, some supplement companies include it in “testosterone-boosting supplements.” That's pretty misleading. Chrysin does not increase testosterone but may keep estrogen levels in check or even lower them. In some men, lower estrogen leads to the same physical and mental health benefits as raising testosterone. Read also: Irritable Male Syndrome, Andropause, and Reclaiming Your Manhood. Healthy inflammation levels Like other natural compounds, such as curcumin, quercetin, and omega-3 fatty acids, chrysin supports healthy inflammation levels. Chrysin alleviates inflammation through inhibition of COX-2, prostaglandin-E2, histamine, NF-γB pathway, tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) alpha, iNOS, and cytokines (interleukin-1β, interleukin-2, interleukin-6, and interleukin-12) and activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated factor γ (PPARγ).Joohee Jung, Emerging Utilization of Chrysin Using Nanoscale Modification Inflammation contributes to heart disease, cancer, allergies, cognitive dysfunction, and many other conditions. Of course, a big part of staying healthy is eating well, following a good exercise program, and getting sufficient sleep. Chrysin may support better inflammation levels, but you still need to control your diet and lifestyle. Cardiovascular health Chrysin may support heart health by slowing the progression of atherosclerosis. Inflammation contributes to plaque formation, and since chrysin supports healthier inflammation levels, it may slow plaque formation. In addition, like nattokinase, chrysin may reduce cholesterol oxidation.
Samuel mata a Agag (verso 32-33).

Candace and Kyle get another chance to talk with our favorite mentor, expert and guru on hormones and hormone testing, Dr. David Zava, Ph.D., CEO and founder of ZRT Laboratory, one of the foremost hormone testing labs in the US and globally. A biochemist by trade and a teacher at heart, Dr. Zava started out as a breast cancer researcher involved in international clinical trials looking into the development of breast cancers genetics and epigenetics of breast cancers. This is yet another challenging listen in which Dr. Zava shares his breast cancer research, as well as cutting-edge science and information women can use to prevent the hormone imbalances that put us at risk for breast cancer and what we can do to prevent a breast cancer or its recurrence. Here are some of the issues and answers we cover in this episode: Hidden hormone imbalances and risks for breast cancer What do these things have to do with breast cancer? – heavy metals/ environmental toxins– poor diet/insulin resistance – being continually stressed out/ too much Cortisol– not sleeping well/lack of Melatonin How Environmental Chemical Carcinogens like heavy metals and xenoestrogens increase our risks for breast cancer How testing our hormones can alert us to hormonal risks for breast cancer. Why estrogen is called “the Angel of Life” and “the Angel of Death” How the buildup of estrogen increases risk of breast cancer (BC) and how supplementing with progesterone can reduce our risk significantly When good estrogens go bad – if they go down the wrong pathways to damage DNA and lead to a BC Genetics vs. Epigenetics – which is more of a risk for BC? The importance of cruciferous vegetables, DIM, Indole 3 carbuncle assist the proper metabolism of estrogens Obesity and the insulin connection to breast cancer Women, wine and breast cancer here and in Europe Dr. Z’s suggested breast protective supplements and lifestyle changes …and so much more… We are privileged to have Dr. Zava share his formidable knowledge about breast cancer to help women move from awareness to action and prevent a breast cancer that may be waiting to happen. “Breast cancer risks start to show up with prolonged stress, the high cortisol levels, the lack of sleep, the low melatonin, the poor appetite, the lack of exercise, etc., but if we improve our lifestyle, keep our hormones balanced… eat the right amount of the right foods (eat the rainbow), get enough sleep in a dark room, stop smoking, eat and drink in moderation, reduce our stress levels…if we do each one of those things on a regular basis…. this is going to decrease your breast cancer risk by half.” – Dr. David Zava Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify Show Notes to Episode Seventeen
If you’ve listened to my podcast recently, you’ve likely heard a lot about oestrogen dominance or excess oestrogen and the problems these two imbalances can bring. Oestrogen in itself isn’t a ‘bad’ hormone - it’s a wonderful hormone that plays a crucial role in our menstrual cycle and our overall health. Excess oestrogen is when there is too much oestrogen circulating the body, and this would be likely cause oestrogen dominance, providing of course that progesterone isn’t also too high (which in my experience with clients at least, is generally less common). Be careful that you’re not buying a caffeinated dandelion and coffee blend - we’re looking for dandelion alone. In fact, these nutrients are so powerful that you may recognise them - they’re often found in oestrogen clearance supplements! Bloating? Anxiety? Tearfulness? Painful breasts? If you experience any of these symptoms, you likely experience PMS in the lead up to your period. Even though PMS is very common, it doesn’t mean it’s just something we have to live with - especially when we’re dealing with endometriosis as well. Add to smoothies, salads and whatever you’re having for dinner - think leafy greens with each meal. Our feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin works closely with oestrogen during the first half of our cycle, and when oestrogen lowers in our second half our mood can take a bit of a hit - especially if our progesterone levels aren’t high enough. B vitamins are some of the foundational nutrients behind healthy hormones - they ensure you’re making healthy amounts, keep oestrogen in check, support progesterone if it’s low and so much more that I’ll have to do a whole podcast on them.
Adesso state tutti attendendo con ansia.
Mentre osservava e vigilava, come Si sentiva? Ovviamente era in preda al dolore. Avrebbe tuttavia potuto pentirSi, a causa di tale dolore, di aver permesso a Satana di tentare Giobbe? La risposta è no!
14. E perché vi sorgono in cuore tali pensieri?

Or v’era molt’erba in quel luogo.

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women. Men are not immune to this either as about 1% of breast cancers occur in males. This episode offers insight into a proactive educational nutritional approach. http://MitchelMD.com As always, this show is educational in nature and the listener must see their regular healthcare practitioner for advice and care. Transcript (machine generated/unedited) [00:00] Welcome to the recharge podcast. This is October and breast cancer awareness month is upon us. I want to share a few statistics just to get things rolling and then I'm going to share a live interview with a patient. I recorded this a little bit ago and edited it out. It's an educational piece. Uh, the, the, uh, content, uh, don't be overwhelmed by the scientific part of it because we'll dive into the specifics of what it means for this particular patient. The takeaway point is that you really need to work hand in hand with your professional to address this issue. Sadly enough, one and eight women in the U s will develop some type of breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. The kicker here as this podcast is geared largely towards men, is that there are about 2,500 cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in men in 2018 alone. The risk remains about the same, about one percent or one in $1,000 for men having breast cancer. So I hope you find some value in this episode and as always a message if you have some concerns. And I hope you'll share it because undoubtedly this issue touches you or someone you know or love close friend or family member. [01:04] The title of this one hopefully grabbed your attention, Broccoli and breasts and obviously with breast cancer awareness month and wanted to shed some light on that issue. And, uh, this will be a little bit different episode. I actually have a live patient, um, someone to do the consult with, uh, regarding some breast cancer genetic risks. And so it's a, I'm trying to do my best to keep it a very limited or minimal in terms of the scientific terminology and jargon. I think you'll definitely get some value from it. But, uh, we just want to preface this that breast cancer not only affects women, but also men. There seems to be a rising percentage of men who are affected by breast cancer, somewhere between one and three percent depending on the, uh, the source of the data, but certainly is an issue that affects men as well. [01:50] And so the bottom line is that everybody, or a lot of people know about the breast cancer genes, Braca one and Braca two, that really comprises the minority of risk for breast cancer. Eighty percent comes from another set of genetic markers and these enzymes actually affect how a person processes estrogen estrogen, like many chemicals in the body can be converted into something beneficial or something detrimental. And if it's detrimental, we want to get rid of it. We want to pee it out or filter through the litter, liver or some other type of process to sort of clean it up and, um, minimize the risk of dangerous to the body. And so when a person has some abnormalities in terms of their machinery, their metabolic machinery, how their body processes things, that really can dramatically increase a risk of a condition. And for the purpose of today's podcast, talking about breast cancer. [02:42] And so, you know, depending on how many of these abnormalities show up for a given person or patient, the risks can really go, go up dramatically. And, uh, so in the example for today, this particular patient had five genes that had abnormalities and so her risk is substantially higher and there are specific things that can be done, terms of supplements, fish oil, dietary modifications, um, vitamin C, Glutathione, selenium, selenium, milk thistle, Indole, three carbinol. I've thrown a lot at you right now. I realize that we'll get into some more of that in the discussion in the recorded interview with one of my patients. So I hope you find some value in this. As always, you can reach out to me on twitter at Dr Mitchell and I love to answer your questions and if you're interested in obtaining a, some specific testing for yourself, I can kind of steer you in that direction as well. And so, um, sure to read the blog post that goes along with this, I give you some more information to some, some nuts and bolts that you really want to know in terms of breast cancer and trying to minimize risk. And so I hope you find this beneficial. And as always, I'd love to have a review on itunes from you. If you find some value in what I'm doing and sharing on the project you podcast and hope you have a fantastic week. So let's dive into the interview. [04:03] Thanks so much for uh, allowing me to record this. Um, we'll keep all your information confidential, but as you're well aware, it's breast cancer month and so just wanted to take a few minutes to go over your test. And the test is actually a test that measures how well your body metabolizes or processes estrogen, which is a huge impact in the risk of breast cancer. I think most women know about Braca one and two, which are sort of the genetic inherited breast cancers that everybody worries about from other family members, but that's really the minority of what, what comprises the risk of breast cancer. And so this test that you did, as you remember, was just a simple as swapping the cheek and it measured six different markers. Basically how well your body processes estrogen. I won't get into the specific genetic terms, but basically you can see from your test here, those are the six, six to eight that were measured in this particular test and so, um, the blue is normal, which means your body processes estrogen through that pathway normally and the pink are abnormal, which means that your body's enzymes may not be able to process certain components of estrogen into a, what we call favorable metabolite. [05:15] What that means is basically we can take part of estrogen and make it into something that is easy for your body to get rid of, whether you pee it out or detoxify it through the liver versus something that accumulates in the body and can potentially increase your risk for breast cancer. So that's sort of the test in a nutshell. I don't know if you have any, any specific questions about what you see on the report in front of you? [05:37] I guess, yeah, I do. I'm worried. I see that I have many variants detected and I just like to know if that means that I have breast cancer or, or I'm going to get breast cancer. [05:47] Sure. I mean, it's a, it's a, uh, a multifactoral questions. So let me get. The first thing is, are there other cancers in your family or do you have breast cancer in your family or other? [05:57] A breast and other. [05:59] Okay. And so, I mean, certainly there is a hereditary component of breast cancer. If you have a first degree relative that has breast cancer, that certainly increases the risk. And then there are certain syndromes where there are multiple cancers, for example, like a thyroid cancer combined with several other cancers in one person. So those are fortunately very rare. But to get to the, uh, answer your question is, um, just because you have these markers, that doesn't mean that you have breast cancer or that for sure you're going to get breast cancer. We know that, that, uh, people who have more abnormalities in their, their machinery, if you will, their metabolic machinery that their risk of breast cancer can go up significantly. And so the more abnormalities you have, a certainly a could increase your risk. But the real issue is just to kind of get the head of the, uh, the whole process is that the ability of, of things that you do to yourself and what you put into your body and really has a substantial impact on your risk. [06:57] And what I mean by that is just simple lifestyle things like what you eat, the kind of food you eat, whether you smoke or drink alcohol. I know it sounds like a simple approach to, uh, you know, potentially a fatal and devastating disease such as breast cancer, but it really kind of gets to the heart of the matter of what we call Epi genetics or another word that we throw around is nutrogenomix. And not to get all scientific, but really food is powerful in terms of using food as medicine. And so by changing what you put into your body, you really have the, the ability to impact these abnormalities in. So for example, you know, we, we sort of harp on our kids to eat green vegetables, but by consuming, for example, cruciferous vegetables, Broccoli as an example, you really have the power to sort of turn on and off some of these genetic abnormalities and so just by altering your diet based on specific abnormalities you see there, you really can can take a risk that might be as high as 13 fold and really scale that back down to something more along the lines of just a few percentage of increase risk so it doesn't wipe out the risk, but it certainly can help your body turn on and off some of these, these abnormalities or these abnormal pathways which can really improve your risk, decrease your risk, which is what it's called [08:15] about. As far as as diet goes. Is it, are there other lifestyle changes such as sleep or stress reduction or. [08:24] Yeah, absolutely. I mean straight sleep is critical. Sleep is sort of the starting block. Everybody wants to jump ahead to, you know, can I take a thyroid pill and tired or can I take a pill or a supplement or something to really fix everything, but if you're not sleeping properly, if your body's inflamed, your body can repair itself. And the, uh, effects of sleep deprivation are widespread and detrimental. It's not just fatigue, but also affects the way your body processes sugar and carbohydrates the way you're, you're a growth hormone is able to not repair the damage that occurs to your body throughout the day. And so sleep is sort of the cornerstone or the foundation of health that people often overlook. And then he kind of asked about specific, specific things. I mean, obviously not everybody loves Broccoli and there are some supplements, so there's one called dm or dim pro and it's got a long chemical name for it, but that's basically the active ingredient of Broccoli that you can take in a pill form, um, that sort of a, a proprietary name. [09:20] The other common name that you may have seen before, is it [inaudible] or Indole? Three carbinol. Most people just call it [inaudible]. That's just a simple supplement that you can take on a daily basis to really kind of shut off some of these abnormal pathways and to help your body process estrogen more effectively so that you can. You can turn an estrogen into something that's beneficial not to bore you with the chemistry of it, but when the estrogen passes through the body, it's shunted into different pathways, whether it's a a different chemical structure, there's a four, there's a 16 and I won't get into the specifics of the chemistry, but that really has a huge impact on whether or not this could be a potentially cancer causing substance or is it something that's beneficial and actually decreases your risk for cancer and also it also has an impact on your mental health in bone health as well. So I'm just a few simple changes in your diet can really have a dramatic impact on your longevity. Essentially. That's what this is all about, is avoiding cancer and in increasing your longevity. So I don't know if that makes sense or not. [10:25] Yeah, so basically this report is telling me that I have a higher risk factor for developing breast cancer, but there are things that I can do that can decrease my risk in my daily life as well. Well, [10:39] yeah, absolutely. I think that's sort of the key thing to know is is not that this test gives you a specific roadmap to avoid cancer, but it does point out some things that are problematic in your body. It's. It allows an individualized approach to your diet and your supplements to decrease your cancer risk and so by knowing that you can take steps to implement some of the changes, whether it's, you know, limiting your alcohol to no more than one drink a day. I'm really thinking hard about whether you're going to use a hormone supplementation or considering some people considering in vitro fertilization. The risk for that really dramatically increases in terms of breast cancer, particularly if you have some of these abnormalities where you get huge doses of a female hormones. The body doesn't process and properly and it's converted into the dangerous forms of estrogen which can dramatically increased risk of breast cancer. And other problems, so just knowing the information ahead of time really allows women to make some, some informed decisions about whether they're going to take birth control or if they're gonna use hormones with former hormones and uh, you know, certainly if there's family history of breast cancer, um, abnormal genetics certainly really want to consider and have an intelligent discussion with your fertility specialists, whether in vitro fertilization with the hormones is really the safest option for you. [11:58] I suppose that's something to consider too, when going through menopause and, and some, uh, hormone replacement during that time as well. [12:06] Absolutely. And do you know, depending on the training of the physician in classically trained physicians rely on Oral Estrogens, which has a functional physician, we know that that particularly is a, not the route to go. The topical estrogen is really the safest route in terms of trying to, a decreased risk of complications. Um, we know that oral estrogen can cause blood clots and increased heart disease and obviously very detrimental health effects. We haven't really found that with the topical estrogen. And the other side of the coin is it's always about balance. Estrogen and progesterone are the two primary female hormones and see a lot of women who don't sleep well at night, particularly when they get to the perimenopausal menopausal stage and oftentimes some supplementation with, with oral estrogen, sorry, oral progesterone, oral progesterone, which is safe, can really improve the quality of sleep. So a combination of some topical estrogen cream in oral estrogen is certainly an option to discuss with, uh, what's your personal physician regarding, you know, what's your desired effect is in terms of lifestyle. [13:11] And it also, again, the risk based on what we know about your genetics. So definitely important things to consider. And then the last point I wanted to bring up as we know that you have some abnormalities on your test here, and so what do you do next? And the next step would be to get the urine test, is to look at some of the metabolites of estrogen and see if you have abnormal amounts in these estrogens. It really needs to take the steps now to improve that if you ignore it in and just let the cumulative effects build up, at least in my opinion, the risk of breast cancer and other disasters outcomes certainly as a, as well stated in the literature. So I think just giving patients the information they need to really make some decisions about how they live, what they put in their body, and whether they're going to take supplements to really improve the metabolism and try to decrease some of the risks is, is just, you know, information is powerful. And uh, that was the purpose of this test for you. It's really kind of shed some light given your family history of breast cancer, a use of birth control pills in the past and uh, and some other factors. So, um, do you have any other questions about the report? [14:17] No, I think that pretty much goes over most of it. The questions that I didn't have. Thank you. [14:21] Yeah, and just the, I mean because the recommendation for you based on your report would be to either use dim or I C on a regular basis. Really take a hard look at very your vegetable cruciferous vegetable intake and the alcohol, a limitation you don't smoke, so that's a positive thing and there's some other supplements that, that, uh, we can talk about, uh, in the future that you might want to increase or may want to add to your diet and your regimen to really kind of improve sleep and other things that are, are critical. All right, you thank you so much for spending some time with me today. If you found value in this episode and the show, please share a review in itunes as it really helps the show get discovered. Please share your biggest takeaway, and as always, I want to help you answer the burning questions in your mind. So reach out to me. I mentioned Linda Dot com or on social media wherever you hang out. Make today incredible and I'll see you on the next episode of the recharge podcasts.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/detox2018 Well, I've been at it again folks: putting my mind and muscles through a brutal ringer for the sake of science. In my recent post "", you learned how Men's Health magazine recently sent me on a 3 month global expedition to do everything a fella could possibly to do increase testosterone, size, orgasm quality, libido and a host of other manhood related parameters - including stem cell injections, acoustic sound wave therapy, red light blasting and beyond. Shortly after completing that article, I received my next writing assignment: outfit my pantry with an arsenal of the latest trendy hangover cures - from Oriental raisin extract hovenia dulcis to prickly pear concentrated extract to self-administered Myer's cocktail IV's - then engage in extreme alcohol hedonism and see what happens (). So, after all this brutality, I've decided to kick off 2018 by pushing the reboot button and cleaning up my entire system with a giant, scientifically proven detoxification mop, and I'm inviting you to join me. In this article, you'll learn why detoxification is not a myth, exactly why you should seriously consider detoxing (even if you live an ultra-clean lifestyle and don't necessarily treat your body as an N=1 guinea pig like I do), and how I'm personally going to detox using a relatively unique approach. Is Detoxification A Myth? A few years ago, The Guardian released an article entitled: ? In the article, the author says that: “...detoxing — the idea that you can flush your system of impurities and leave your organs squeaky clean and raring to go — is a scam. It’s a pseudo-medical concept designed to sell you things.” So is this true? Can you really not detox your body? As you go into the New Year, during which detox diets and claims are sure to surround you, it’s important to know the truth about detoxing. It’s important to begin with an understanding of what toxins actually are. No matter how “clean” you live your life, just about everybody shows some evidence of a buildup of toxins. When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted the , they found some pretty shocking results. On average, the CDC’s report found 212 chemicals in people’s blood or urine, 75 of which had never before been measured in the U.S. population. The chemicals included: Acrylamide (formed when foods are baked or fried at high temperatures, and as a byproduct of cigarette smoke) Arsenic, found in many home-building products Environmental phenols, including bisphenol A (found in plastics, food packaging and epoxy resins) and triclosan (used as an antibacterial agent in personal care products such as toothpaste and hand soap) Perchlorate, used in airplane fuel, explosives and fireworks Perfluorinated chemicals, used to create non-stick cookware Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, used in fire retardants found in consumer products such as mattresses Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), found in paints, air fresheners, cleaning products, cosmetics, upholstery fabrics, carpets, dry-cleaned clothing, wood preservatives, and paint strippers When you put all these together, these chemicals can potentially present a toxic burden to the human body, and (as the CDC has found) can accumulate in your body’s blood, urine and tissue — possibly one reason why the plastic-based versions of these chemicals are sometimes referred to as “obesogens,” due to the . While your body does actually have detoxification organs (your liver and kidney) that can process many of these chemicals and toxins, they can potentially cause medical problems if your liver and kidneys are not functioning properly or are overburdened with a poor diet. for your blood and removing wastes and excess water from the body, it’s the liver that has an incredibly important job when it comes to detoxification. Along with filtering your blood to remove toxins, your . During phase 1, toxins are neutralized and broken into smaller fragments. Then, in phase 2 they are bound to other molecules, creating a new non-toxic molecule that can be excreted in your bile, urine or stool. But order for this liver detoxification to work properly, your body must have adequate nutrients. If not, , which can leave toxic substances to build up in your body. There are specific nutrients that support both pathways. For example: Phase 1: B-Vitamins (B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid) Flavonoids, found in fruits and vegetables Foods rich in vitamins A, C and E (eg, carrots, oranges, wheat germ, almonds) Glutathione, found in avocado, watermelon, asparagus, walnuts, fresh fruits and veggies, and the nutrients n-acetylcysteine, cysteine and methionine. Branched chain amino acids, found in animal protein (dairy products, red meat, eggs and whey protein) Phospholipids, found in eggs, meats, organ meats, fish and soybeans Phase 2: Indole-3-carbinol, found in cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts Limonene, found in oranges, tangerines, caraway seeds and dill seeds Glutathione, found in avocado, watermelon, asparagus, walnuts, fresh fruits and veggies. Fish oil Amino acids from protein have demonstrated the for supporting proper liver detox pathways. In addition, as you can learn in , Dr. Bryan Walsh has introduced the concept of a third "Phase 3" detoxification pathway. Now that you understand detoxification, let's delve into how detoxification products are actually supposed to work. The first claim in the article from The Guardian is based on a quote from , a professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University. He says: “...there are two types of detox: one is respectable and the other isn’t. The respectable one is the medical treatment of people with life-threatening drug addictions. The other is the word being hijacked by entrepreneurs, quacks and charlatans to sell a bogus treatment that allegedly detoxifies your body of toxins you’re supposed to have accumulated.” The article goes on to explain that when it comes to products that range from dietary supplements to smoothies and shampoos, not one of the manufacturers can actually define what they meant by detoxification, or name the toxins these products are supposed to remove. However, just because a manufacturer of — say — spirulina powder (a popular green powder found in the detox section of many health foods stores) can’t say how it works, doesn’t mean there isn’t scientific evidence for it’s potential to remove toxins from the body. For example, . It does this via a process called ion-exchange binding, and can . 100 micrograms (a very small amount) of spirulina hexane extract has been shown to . At a does of 250-500 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, spirulina has been shown to , and it has also been noted to , and . Granted, spirulina is one of the few molecules in existence that actually has a large body of evidence to support it’s detoxifying activity, but other compounds such as , and have also been clinically proven to reduce heavy metal buildup. And while heavy metals are only one form of a toxin that can accumulate in your tissues, there is no doubt that science has proven that these toxins can indeed be removed via the use of these specific “detox” compounds found in nature. So when the article in The Guardian “guffaws” at the ideas of superfoods such as spirulina, I would actually beg to differ. Or take milk thistle extract, another popular detox or cleansing supplement. While the article in The Guardian would have you to believe there is no value whatsoever in consuming this type of nutrient, that milk thistle actually protects and promotes the growth of liver cells, fights oxidation (a process that damages cells), and actually blocks toxins from entering the cell membrane. Silymarins, a group of antioxidants extracted from the seeds of milk thistle, have antioxidant properties several times greater than that of vitamins C and E, with . Milk thistle also helps to , which is necessary for phase 2 liver detoxification to be completed. As you can see from the two simple examples of spirulina and milk thistle, things aren’t quite as simple as painting with a broad brush and saying that detox supplements and diets simply don’t work. While the detox evidence for — say — cayenne pepper and maple syrup juice really doesn’t exist, evidence for other nutrients actually does exist. The article in The Guardian then goes on to address colon cleanses, noting that: “...proponents will tell you that mischievous plaques of impacted poo can lurk in your colon for months or years and pump disease-causing toxins back into your system. Pay them a small fee, though, and they’ll insert a hose up your bottom and wash them all away.” And also: “Some colon-cleansing tablets contain a polymerising agent that turns your faeces into something like a plastic, so that when a massive rubbery poo snake slithers into your toilet you can stare back at it and feel vindicated in your purchase.” When you think about it, the idea of toxins being somehow reabsorbed by your body as they sit in your colon actually makes some sense. After all, rectal suppositories are used to rapidly administer drugs — so if drugs can enter your bloodstream from your colon, it’s certainly possible that toxins could be entering too. However, your colon is equipped with several natural mechanisms to keep toxins from building up. For example: . . I personally suspect that if colon cleansing or enemas have any effect in making you feel like you have more energy or have been “cleansed”, it is more likely to do with an , along with , which can indeed improve digestion, have a laxative effect, relieve constipation and cause you to go to the bathroom. Sure, this could potentially make you feel better by allowing you to better digest your food, or to even pass some feces that may have built up over the past few days, but I’d have to agree with the article in The Guardian that there is no evidence that poo can simply sit inside you for years, slowly rotting and toxifying your body. So should you detox? Ultimately, as the article in The Guardian alludes to, your body has it’s own powerful methods of detoxification — and can activate these methods without the use of fancy diets or . These methods primarily come in the form of your liver and your kidneys. For example, your liver prevents pathogens from passing into your bloodstream, processes environmental toxins for safe removal, and helps to rid your body of excess nitrogen that build up from the breakdown of proteins and amino acids. Your kidneys filter blood, remove excess water, pass urea (which is a toxin that builds up as a byproduct of protein breakdown), and sends this all out of your body via your urine. So if you eat foods that support your liver and kidneys, or avoid foods that stress your liver and kidneys, you’re already detoxing every day — and theoretically, unless you’ve gone through something like a serious bout of alcoholism or heavy metal toxicity, you don’t really need any fancy herbal blends or colonic cleanses (at least, that's what I used to think. More on that in a second...as it may not be quite that simple). But first - to start simple indeed: for your liver, you can do things like avoid high amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats from processed and packaged foods like canola oil and French fries, and instead eat those type of fats from fish, meat, seeds and nuts. You can avoid high amounts of fructose and sugar, limit alcohol, consume plenty of egg yolks (which contain choline that your liver uses to process fats), eat good, organic liver every now and then and . For your kidneys, you can limit , drink plenty of water, limit alcohol intake, and — if you are predisposed to renal issues — limit (e.g. more than 200g/day of protein). So, as The Guardian article notes, many popular detox and cleansing diets probably feel beneficial very much in part because of what they eliminate. All the processed fats, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, candy, soda, commercial meat and snack foods you’re eliminating on a detox diet are giving your liver and kidneys a chance to step up and do their normal detoxification duties, since they’re no longer overburdened with bad food and not enough micronutrients and minerals to support their normal function. But alas, the plot thickens, and it turns out that in our modern, post-industrial, radiated, metal-laden, polluted, glyphosate-sprayed, GMO-concentrated era, you may need to engage in a bit of better living through science and supplementation to truly detox. The Detoxification Plot Thickens So you eat a clean diet, take care of your liver and kidney's, and you don't need to detox, right? As I alluded to above, it's likely not that simple. See, when I interviewed Dr. Dan Pompa in the podcast episode “, he described a serious issue called “cellular toxicity” and explained why it is an underlying cause of numerous health issues, including gut problems, thyroid issues, sluggish metabolism, brain fog and much more. Once again, the cause of this modern phenomenon is not "woo-woo" or non-quantifiable toxins, but rather measurable physical compounds: plastics, phytoestrogens, metals, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides and all manner of other chemicals that can overwhelm our liver, kidneys and built-in detoxification system. And what’s especially unfair is that you and me (even when we’re living a clean lifestyle) have to get exposed to these toxins on a constant daily basis, whether from brake dust on car roads, or mercury from electronic equipment, or herbicides on the apples at our friend’s house, or estrogens in the shampoo at the hotel, or mold on the carpeting at the gym (don't even get me started on gyms - just read this two part series on gym issue - and )…you get the idea. So even if your waistline and fat cell storage survived the holidays, the same might not be said for your brain, your lungs and the rest of your insides. In other words, over the past year, was your body ever exposed to over-processed and refined foods, chemical additives, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated water, artificial sweeteners or anything else that might remotely be consider “unnatural”? Did you drink many diet sodas? Eat much non-organic or farm-raised meat? Travel extensively? Chomp on fruits and vegetables without washing them? Get sick and have to get on a drug protocol? Engage in a few excessive nights of drinking? Get exposed to second-hand smoke? Spend much time around cleaning supplies? You get the idea. To make matters even worse, the world’s largest study on air pollution, just , found that when you breathe the average air in the average city (with all other variables held constant, such as eating healthy and exercising) you develop a huge risk for high blood pressure. How? In the study, the biological mechanisms for the adverse effect of air pollution on the functioning of the heart and blood vessels included: -Local and systemic inflammation… -Oxidative stress (a build-up of damaging molecules in the body)… -An imbalance in correct functioning of the nervous system… This also means that no matter how healthy you eat, how much you workout or how clean your water is, you’re still getting blasted with toxins from air pollutant every time you step into a city, or airport, or public gym, or just about anywhere else they aren’t using massive HEPA filters. How I’m Going To Detox This Year So why am I telling you all this? Frankly, everything that you've just read about is exactly I’m going to detox my entire body and brain beginning this February of 2018, and . That’s right, . And I’m not going to do just any ol’ detox like putting cayenne pepper into a nasty concoction or pushing giant grocery shopping carts full of random herbs through the supermarket. , these popular detoxes can actually release toxins from tissues such as fat cells and shove them into the brain, causing even more damage and serious brain and body repercussions that include permanent brain fog, weight gain, skin breakouts, mood disorders, and much more. Instead, I’m partnering up with one of the most brilliant detox minds on the face of the planet: the guy I mentioned earlier named , and Dr. Pompa's is going to walk us through the exact brain and body detox program that he’s studied and perfected for years. But I'm not going to stop there. I’m then going to combine Dr. Pompa's proven detox formula with my own exercise and biohacking protocols so that I can completely clean up my body without losing fitness by doing only, say, hot yoga and trampolining for weeks upon weeks. See, I don’t want to come out of my detox having lost my muscle or having to huff and puff whenever I climb a flight of stairs, so I’m pulling out all my fitness tricks that allow me to sculpt my body while I detox, without actually causing adrenal fatigue issues or ruining the detox protocol. I going to incorporate many of the similar modifications that I included in my detox last year, which you can , where you'll discover: -The 5 strategies I’m personally using to ensure I don’t lose fitness or muscle during my detox… -How fringe techniques like dry skin brushing, rebounding and infrared therapy can maximize the effectiveness of a detox… -The exact workouts I’ll be performing during my detox… -Whether or not you should use the dietary strategy of ketosis during a detox… -The best fasting strategy to use during a detox… -How meditation can fit perfectly into a detox program… -How oil pulling can assist with detox… -Why fermented foods are crucial during a detox… -The crazy, unique tea blends I’ll be using to accelerate my detox and wean myself off coffee… -And much more! During that episode, you'll learn why I'm going to incorporate strategies such as: – – – – – – – – – – Now don't worry - if this all sounds crazy complex or if you don't have time to go back and listen to that podcast, then please understand that I've taken all the guesswork out of it for you, and out in an easy-to-understand and simple-to-use dashboard, training plan, and downloadable pdf's. You simply wake up each day, and do exactly what the plan says, and you can, of course, look forward at the beginning of each week to preview the entire program. A healthy gut is imperative to staying healthy. It is believed that up to 80% of the immune system is in the gut! Medicinal Mushrooms - Potent immune-enhancers that have been used to fight cancer for centuries. Reishi, cordyceps and maitake in particular can improve immune function and cell regeneration. Green Tea - Not only is it a great pick me up, green tea is an excellent source of cancer fighting antioxidants that are several times more potent than Vitamins C and E called polyphenols. Garlic - We mention Garlic under spices, but keep in mind that it’s known to boosts white blood cell count. Important Health Factors: Healthy Blood Cells Red Blood Cells and Oxygenation - We have to have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen. Warburg won the nobel prize in 1931 after figuring out that once a cell has less that 60% of the oxygen it needs cancer occurs. Important because cancer cells are Anaerobic and proliferate through burning glucose. Healthy cells are Aerobic and thrive with sufficient oxygen Best way to build red blood cells is by consuming chlorophyll - it's the closest thing to hemoglobin in the plant world. co-factors that help build red blood cells Vitamin B6 Vitamin B9 Vitamin B12 Vitamin A Iron Copper CoEnzymeQ10 - nutrient vital for the production of energy in the mitochondria. Powerful antioxidant that is also used in the mitochondria to transport oxygen. CoQ10 must be there for your cells to produce energy using oxygen because it transports oxygen to where it needs to be. White Blood Cells - cells are produced in the bone marrow, and typically work as part of the immune system to fight off bacterial and viral infections. We have to have white blood cells to fight off invaders and to combat cancer cells. Vitamin D3 Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are linked to poor immune functioning, which may translate to low white blood cell counts. Clinical research shows that vitamin D can help prevent cancer best when you acquire about 50–70 nanograms per milliliter daily. Get 20 minutes of sun exposure every day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with 40 percent of your entire body exposed to the sun or take an oral supplement containing around 5,000 to 10,000 IUs of D3 every day. Zinc Linked with the production of white blood cells According to The American Cancer Society, studies have shown that zinc levels in blood and inside white blood cells are often lower in patients with certain types of cancer. Selenium The University of Maryland Medical Center states that selenium can help build up white blood cells and move them around. Some studies also indicate that selenium may help prevent some infections. Another study indicated that when the elderly takes both zinc and selenium supplements, their immune systems responded better to the flu vaccine than those who took placebo. Vitamin B9 (Folate) The body needs folate to make white blood cells. A deficiency of folate can also lead to anemia, which is a low level of red blood cells. Vitamin C an immune enhancer that helps white blood cells perform at their peak and quickens the immune system's response. Omega 3 Fatty Acids Help combat inflammation and helps make white blood cells. Adaptogens boost Immune Function and modulate white blood cell count. Astragalus Root Helps boost white blood cells University of Texas found that Astragalus Root enhanced the immune system’s ability to identify bacteria, viruses, and even cancer cells. Cat's Claw Modulates the white blood cell count - if the white blood cell count is too low, it will increase it, and if it’s too high, it will decrease it. According to herbalist Maya Cointreau, "cat’s claw increased the ability of white blood cells to find and eradicate foreign micro-organisms. It also increases the body’s production of T-cells, helping to fight infection more effectively.” Reishi Mushroom Source of polysaccharides that have been shown to better activate Natural Killer cells reducing cancer metastasis. Natural Killer cells are lymphocytes that seek out tumors. Reishi also has been shown to assist in slowing the growth of tumors as well as prompting programmed cell death in malignant cells. Maitake Mushroom Stimulates Natural Killer cell activity in cancer patients. Believed to suppress tumor growth and to trigger malignant cell death through its specific immune-enhancing methods. Agaricus Blazei Murill Activates macrophage and interferon immune activity leading to tumor shrinkage and stopping metastasis. Reduces chance of future cancer occurrences. Also shown to decrease the side effects of chemotherapy or certain types of cancers. Turkey Tail Studies show that it increases Natural Killer cell activity towards tumor detection and eradication. Soursop (Graviola) - Found to be stronger at killing cancer cells than chemotherapy. Studies show compounds found in Soursop kill cancer cells, but do not harm healthy cells. Nutrients that Support Breast Health Zinc Selenium Omega 3's Vitamin D3 Vitamin A Vitamin E B6, B9, B12 Estrogen Metabolizing Nutrients DIM (diindolylmethane) – Found in all cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, and kale. DIM forces estrogen to break down into a non-cancer promoting type of estrogen in the liver Calcium D-glucarate -Also found naturally in cruciferous vegetables, as well as fruits, such as apples, oranges, and grapefruit. It aids the liver in the production of glucuronic acid, which binds to "bad" estrogens and deactivates them. Indole-3 Carbinol - Also found in cruciferous vegetables, Indole Carbinol has been found to benefit estrogen metabolism. Remember that it's the "bad" estrogen that is cancer promoting. Aromatase Inhibitors - Antioxidants that block aromatase, an enzyme that helps to create estrogen. There's a type of bad estrogen is believed to fuel breast cancer cell growth. Examples: Grape seed extract Chrysin - biofavaniod compound found in propolis, honey, and passionflower. Parsley Cruciferous Vegetables Nutrients that Support Prostate Health: Zinc Selenium Omega 3's Vitamin D3 Vitamin A Vitamin E B6, B9, B12 Herbs that Support Prostate Health: Saw Palmetto -This herb has shown to reduce prostate inflammation and enlargement CBD oil (Cannabadiol) - cannabinoids have been found to inhibit the growth of this ID-1 gene and to return cancerous cells back to healthy cells. Prostate cancer patients have high levels of the ID-1 gene. Lycopene - An antioxidant found to prevent and even reverse prostate cancer as well as prostate enlargement. This is the red pigment contained in foods such as tomatoes and watermelon. Stinging Nettle Root - Studies have shown it to reduce the symptoms associated with prostatitis. Aphrodisiacs come from the old Greek Goddess , Aphrodity, who was the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation.Spinach : Very high in zinc, and it is a very important mineral for test production. deficiency in zinc can cause a lot of of health woes in which Erectile Dysfunction is one of them ( if you don’t know what ED means, it’s basically when a man not being able to keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse)Spinach contains an ingredient known as indole-3-carbinol. Indole-3-carbinol is responsible for stopping the production of estrogen in men. Men who produce very little estrogen tend to have leaner muscles and higher testosterone production which means killer libido and sex drive.Oysters: Extremely high in zinc, which is known as the sex booster mineral to begin with, especially amongst men. Oysters contain more zinc than any other food on the planet. But also exceptionally high in Omega 3 Fatty acids, and can help to regulate the inflammatory effects of many of today’s foods to begin with. Omega 3 fats also help with healthy cholesterol mobilization which can help boost testosterone levels, which are truly good for both men and women, we both have them. The old myth about eating oysters only in months that end in “R” is false, you’re perfectly safe, you just get better flavor in the fall and winter months.Chill Peppers: for my friends who don’t like spicy stuff you may not like this… Chilli Pappers has a component called Capsaicin Have you ever noticed a natural high when eating chilies and the burning sensation you get after ? Capsaicin promotes the release of chemicals that can raise your heart rate and trigger the release of endorphins that give you a natural high, which pumps that libido ( some people always say Spicy food, spicy bedroom, probably why most of the Spicy food consuming countries have such high fertility and what not)Watermelon: Even though watermelon is more than 90% water, the remaining 10% contains a super potent phytonutrient called “citrulline.” This converts to an amino acid called arginine which relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow. Those of you that take any pre-workout supplements or anything like that, arginine is what is often in them to help you get more blood flow during your workout. Ultimately, increased blood flow can result in easier arousal for both men and women. And for men that may suffer from erectile dysfunction, this can help significantly as well. Not to mention, watermelon wouldn’t be too bad of a pre-workout snack!Figs : this is an amazing one, this fruit's been around for centuries and totally should be in the superfood category. fun fact, It was Cleopatra’s favorite fruit. Ancient greeks valued it more than gold as some points... because of it’s benefits, besides lowering cholesterol, good for diabetics since it contains a lot of potassium which helps regulate sugar in the blood, prevention of coronary heart disease (high in Omega 3 & 6 )BUT for our topic today, this is an amazing one, ancient world was recommending figs to correct many sexual dysfunctions, like sterility, Erectile dysfunction, Stamina...etc what we do in the mediterranean area is soaking 2-3 figs in organic milk and eating them in the morning. and sometimes even drinking the milk or the water where it was soaked at.Saffron: Saffron, the spendy little spice, is actually quite the aphrodisiac, and one of the few that has stood the test to serious scientific scrutiny. Many scientists feel that aphrodisiacs are merely a placebo effect, but saffron is one that clearly works from a physical standpoint! Saffron contains 3 specific anti oxidants that help with sex drive, crocin, crocetin, and safranol. Studies actually showed significant blood flow to the reproductive areas shortly after consuming saffron. You can actually add saffron to your tea and make a nice little aphrodisiac drink to set the mood right! What’s funny is that Cleopatra was ALSO known for using saffron! I guess she was quite sexually active!Dates: another ancient fruit that has been around for thousands of years. besides its deliciousness, dates is great source of vitamins and minerals (calcium, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc, vitamin A, K niacin...etc) helps with constipation, health bone, Allergies, Reducing LDL cholesterol levels which leads to healthy heart.so studies has shown that dates beneficial for increasing sexual stamina. Also dates contains high level of estradiol and flavonoid, these components increase the sperm count and motility. also promotes the increase of testicular size and weight.Pesto: It looks like the old disney cartoon of Lady and the Tramp had it right when it came down to romantic spaghetti! Pesto is show to be great for sexual health because of a couple reasons. For one, they contain the appropriate polyunsaturated fats to help with cholesterol production, but they also generally contain pine nuts. And next to oysters, pine nuts are one have one of the highest concentrations of zinc of any food! And like we covered before, zinc is definitely a powerful aphrodisiac. But don’t overdo it on pesto, because it is usually very high in salt and in calories, and pine nuts are so potent, you really only need about a tablespoon or two. Try to make it with spaghetti squash instead.Avocados : Testical tree as it was called by Aztics, it contains high amount of vitamin B6 and vitamin E, which increases hormone production, it is also great source of monounsaturated fats which are amazing for a healthy heart. They also contain vitamin B6 (a nutrient that increases male hormone production) and potassium (which helps regulate a woman's thyroid gland), two elements that help increase libido in both men and women.LDL cholesterol doesn’t just clog arteries – it leads to erectile dysfunction and a lack of flow in the downstairs department, too. Penn State University researchers found men with high intakes of monounsaturated fat – avocado – had lower LDL cholesterol and more testosterone.Eggs:I love how eggs are making a solid comeback lately! They used to be deemed so unhealthy, but now people are really starting to realize that they aren’t bad for you; they’re good for you! The reason eggs are so good for your sexual health is because of the high levels of that vitamin B-6 once again, but they are also specifically good for male testosterone levels. So if you or someone you know may be suffering from a loss of libido, having a couple of whole eggs every morning can help the natural sterols form to establish new testosterone conversion! Make sure when you get your eggs that you’re getting cage free and organic, not just cage free, because it doesn’t mean too much!Maca: Is known by many as Peru’s natural Viagra. This natural root has been known throughout Peru’s history as a sex enhancing root passed down by the Inca. According to research, the maca plant is used by the Peruvian culture to increase strength, stamina, energy, fertility and libido. I started adding it to my morning smoothies and have Maca lattes. Catechesi, conferenze e meditazioni di don Leonardo Maria Pompei
The efforts and projection of Clorinda Matto de Turner's works go beyond the issue of indigenous people, women or religious aspects. They are fundamental to the construction of the imaginary, where the identity and future of Latin-American leadership is formed by their own history, from Pre-Columbian times to the present. Her initial premise in novels such as Aves sin Nido, Tradiciones Cuzqueñas, Indole o Herencia shows us a difficult social reality in XIX century Perú. During her exile in Argentina (1895), until her death (1909) is when her vision extends beyond borders and the result is discourses that cover aspects of the foundation of a Latin American nation, emerging in a new concept of the mother-land. In this imaginary, she criticizes the perpetuation of patriarchal tradition and seeks to reform progress in a way that men and women participate equally. Her essays, discourses and diaries in Boreales, miniaturas y porcelanas (1902) for example, emphasized the role of women who are bearers of great social change, women who write and educate. She called them Workers of Progress or Intellectual Workers. It is necessary to refer to the previous effort of Juana Manuela Gorriti, one of Matto's friends and mentors. She is important in the history of both Argentina and Perú because of her work associated with women representation in the building of a nation. This work focuses on Juana Manuela Gorriti’s stories from Sueños y Realidades (1875) where nation-building drama is narrated. Gorriti is a protagonist of this drama as well, during Manuel de Rosas' regime in Argentina. This essay will also show her journey while she was exiled, and her educational and intellectual work in Perú promoting literary circles and transnational intellectual networking.

Schema 78.
