When does comedy become more than a laugh? Ben Mangrum of MIT joins RtB to discuss his new book, The Comedy of Computation: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Obsolescence (Stanford UP, 2025), which in some ways is organized around “the intriguing idea that human knowledge work is our definitive feature and yet the machines we are ourselves made are going to replace us at it.” Comedy has provided a toolbox (Charles Tilly calls them "collective repertoires") for responding to the looming obsolescence of knowledge workers.John's interest in Menippean satire within science fiction leads him to ask about about the sliding meanings of comedy and its pachinko machine capacity; he loves the way Ben uses the word and concept of doubling,; Ben explains how the computer may either queer (in an antisocial way) or get assimilated into romantic heteronormative pairings. John asks about Donna Haraway's 1985 A Cyborg Manifesto and teh way it denaturalizes gender roles and the way new technological affordances (from the Acheulean axe that Malafouris discusses to the Apple watch) redefine human roles. Ben delves into the minstrelsy pre-history of the photo-robots going as far back as the late 19th century. They unpack the distinctively American Leo Marxian optimism of The Machine in the Garden (1964) that spreads back as far as the proto-robots like The Steam Man of the Prairies(1868) and good old Tik-Tok in the Wizard of Oz novels. John asks about double-edged nature of Ben's claim that comic “genericity provides forms for making a computationally mediated social world seem more habitable, even as it also provides Is for criticizing and objecting to that world." First you get description says Ben--and then sometimes critique. John asks about the iterability of the new: how much of what seems new actually New New (in the sense of that great 1999 Michael Lewis book, The New New Thing)?

224: Admiral James Stavridis | Underappreciated Leadership Lessons

Admiral James Stavridis is a 4-Star Navy Admiral who served as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. Following his military career, he served as Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Currently he serves as Partner and Vice Chairman of The Carlyle Group, one of the world's largest private equity firms. He also serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Rockefeller Foundation. In this episode we discuss the following: To be a great leader, you have to be in shape. Leaders need energy and health, and sleep is a weapon. If you're not rested, you're not ready for battle. Admiral Stavridis was Captain of a destroyer that failed inspection, it was his peers that had his back and saved him that day. Invest in our peer relationships because they will be honest with us and be unafraid to reach out. Great leaders are great readers. To be a reader is to lead a thousand lives. Every book is a simulator, whether we're learning resilience from The Old Man and the Sea or leadership from the Godfather. Since conducting this interview, I have been reading The Admiral's Bookshelf, and I love learning the lessons he learned from his top 25 books. And because of this conversation I created my own bookshelf of the 25 books that have most influenced me. I've pasted these in the show notes and on my website.   The Admiral's final lesson is timeless. Be humble.  And inspired by The Admiral's Bookshelf, I created my own bookshelf. Nate Meikle's Bookshelf The Book of Mormon & Bible Taught me about Jesus Christ, love, repentance, forgiveness, and endurance Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Reminds me to avoid the superficial Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom Motivated me to become a professor Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki The first book to get me excited about personal finance, one of the most important, underappreciated topics IMO. A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt Motivates me to be honest in all things How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Improved my communication skills dramatically Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Warns me of the dangers of infidelity Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Motivates me to live a life of integrity My Personal Best by John Wooden Taught me about servant leadership and to treat friendship like a fine art The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb Made me realize the importance of long tail events Jim Trelease Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease Motivated me to teach my daughter to read at age 2, read tens of thousands of books to her (and our subsequent 3 children), and ultimately write my own book (Little Miss) about how to inspire children to love reading Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath Taught me the importance of storytelling and how to tell great stories The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield Taught me about Buddhism, and the three causes of human suffering (Grasping, Aversion, Delusion) A Guide to the Good Life by William Irvine Taught me about Stoic Philosophy and the value of negative visualization and wanting the things we have The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt Taught me to not coddle my children and the dangers of cognitive distortions (and the value of cognitive behavioral therapy) The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweill (published in 2005) Made me realize that AI is likely the most important invention ever, and persuaded me that Artificial General Intelligence will arrive during my lifetime Poor Charlie's Almanack, by Charlie Munger The greatest collection of wisdom I've ever come across related to investing (specifically) and decision making (generally) Thinking In Bets by Annie Duke Taught me about the dangers of resulting / outcome bias (judging a decision by the outcome rather than the process) Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss Taught me the importance of seeing a negotiation from the other person's point of view, and constantly showing them that you understand their position (by labeling, mirroring, and using an accusations audit) Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson Taught me about elite ambition, determination, and focus Endurance by Alfred Lansing Taught me about unflinching leadership Good Energy by Casey Means Persuaded me to eliminate processed foods and exercise 5-6 days per week Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card Reminds me how capable children are Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan Inspires me to be courageous The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams Reminds me to try to laugh every day, in every class, in every conversation

Avatar: The Last Airbender was a popular animated show on Nickolodeon in the mid-00’s. The series depicted a fantasy world based on a blend of European, Asian, and Native American influences inhabited by “benders” who could manipulate a single one of the four elements of earth, fire, water, and air. For the Glory KC is back with the 148th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City put up one of the worst performances in recent memory when they went on the road and lost 4-1 to the LA Galaxy. The dead-last-in-all-of-MLS Galaxy. They gave up a hattrick in the first half to Designated Player, Joseph Paintsil, and he frankly could have scored four or five goals on the night. It's a worrying trend with how they start games and how they end the first half of games.Despite it being bad, and it was very bad, it wasn't all bad. Dejan Joveljic scored again, this time against his former team leaving him 4th in the Golden Boot standings. There were positive moments for new starters Memo Rodriguez and Stephen Afrifa (and bad ones but let us have this). Robert Voloder came off the bench and made his case to still be on this roster.Sheena and I also discuss all the follies and how much of the blame should be heaped onto John Pulskamp (spoiler: not much in my eyes). And we have to discuss that Shapi Suleymanov red card.Unfortunately, we also have to update the "race to the bottom" by Sporting KC. They are dangerously closer to 'winning' the Wooden Spoon for the first time in club history. The only hope may be that other teams also play bad, which D.C. United and St. Louis City did their part this weekend. In the SKC Round-up we also cover how much General Allocation Money the new Chief Soccer Officer (CSO) is going to have to work with and some good and bad moments from the final SKC II home game. The KC Current lifted us up a bit on Friday though, with their dominant 4-1 win with a heavily rotated lineup. There were brilliant moments, debuts, firsts and more. And we have to talk about how Temwa Chawinga was placed ridiculously low on the Ballon d'Or voting. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:Chicago Fire's new Stadium being approvedA further expanded World Cup in 2030Desi Scott set to retire (again)Here is a rundown of topics and start times:Sporting KC get embarrassed against the Galaxy - 9:39SKC Wooden Spoon Update - 40:23KC Current reverses the SKC score for another win - 50:46Digital Crawl - 1:09:59Upcoming GamesUSMNT U-20s vs. New Caledonia, Mon. In this episode of SpaceTime, we dive into the cosmos to uncover the secrets of the early universe, explore the potential for black hole atmospheres, and examine the intriguing history of habitability on Mars, alongside the launch of a new deep space antenna by the European Space Agency.Mysterious Red Dots in the Early UniverseAstronomers have identified a population of enigmatic red dots in the early universe, potentially representing exotic stellar atmospheres around ancient black holes. These findings, published in Astronomy and Astrophysics, could bridge the gap in understanding the rapid growth of supermassive black holes. The Webb Space Telescope's observations suggest these objects might be a new class of celestial body, challenging existing models of galaxy formation and offering insights into the origins of galaxies.Multiple Episodes of Habitability on MarsNASA's Perseverance rover has provided compelling evidence that Mars's Jezero Crater experienced multiple episodes of liquid water flooding, each capable of supporting life. By analysing geochemical data, scientists have identified various minerals that reveal a dynamic history of volcanic activity and water interactions, suggesting a complex aqueous past that could have fostered life on the Red Planet.European Space Agency's New Deep Space DishThe European Space Agency is set to inaugurate its latest Australian deep space antenna at the Norcia tracking station in Western Australia. This 35-metre parabolic dish will enhance ESA's deep space communications capabilities, supporting missions and ensuring robust data transmission from spacecraft exploring our solar system. The new facility complements ESA's existing network of antennas worldwide, reinforcing their commitment to deep space exploration.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstronomy and Astrophysicshttps://www.aanda.org/Journal of Geophysical Research Planetshttps://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/21699356European Space Agencyhttps://www.esa.int/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.Mysterious Red Dots in the Early UniverseMultiple Episodes of Habitability on MarsEuropean Space Agency's New Deep Space Dish

Not again! Chip Kidd and Michael Cho are the latest comic book creators to find their way, literally, into comics. The Avengers in the Veracity Trap, published as part of the Marvel Arts imprint of Abrams ComicArts, propels the titular superheroes from their dimension into ours, revealing that Kidd and Cho control their free will. The oversized original graphic novel is a stunning-looking comic, thanks to Michael Cho making magic with sequentials, taking a short break from his usual stellar cover work. What is it about comics? Read enough of them, and suddenly you want to be in them. The medium invites invasion, calling folks like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Grant Morrison, Brian Michael Bendis, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and others to throw themselves upon the panels. Maybe it's because, as children, we wrap this flatland universe around us like a blanket. It's comfy and protective. It's where we want to go when the third dimension reveals itself as too damn physical with our soft little bodies. Chip Kidd joins the podcast this week to discuss how he once again wormed his way into comic book panels (yeah, this is not his first offense. See also, Batman: Death by Design and Alex Ross's Marvelocity). We discuss how "The Veracity Trap" has become a valuable concept for us personally as we struggle with the strings that direct our movements these days. As usual, the conversation gets philosophical, breaking down free will and the troubled waters between artist and audience. The Avengers in the Veracity Trap is now available wherever rad comics are sold. Make sure you follow Chip Kidd on Instagram. It's Lauren's birthday (well, sort of), and she's diving deep — and hilariously — into what it means to turn 42. Inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, she reflects on motherhood, messy relationships, starting over, reclaiming creativity, and redefining self-worth. This isn't your average “here's what I learned” episode. It's a raw, real, and fiery manifesto for anyone tired of living on autopilot. If you've ever questioned your value, sacrificed too much, or just need a spark to reconnect with your passion — this episode is your wake-up call.  Spoiler alert: the answer isn't in a spreadsheet. It's in how you care for yourself.
