Every RPG player knows the real game doesn't start when the dice hit the table. No, the real adventure begins when some nerds open a rulebook, stare at a character sheet, and argue about whether a Wookiee hacker with a moral crusade for droid rights is mechanically viable. In this episode of the RPGBOT.Quickstart series, the crew tackles FFG Star Wars RPG character creation in Fantasy Flight's Edge of the Empire. Randall decides the galaxy clearly needs a Force-sensitive Wookie slicer, Ash plans to become the smooth-talking Twi'lek pilot with questionable ethics, and Tyler guides them through the rules like Han Solo navigating an astroid field. Fewer explosions, though. The crew debates Wookie vocal acting, and give a lot of attention to character backgrounds, motivations, and that fancy "obligation" mechanic that Tyler has been gushing about for the past 5 seasons. Show Notes In Part 2 of the RPGBOT Quickstart guide to the Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG, the hosts dive deep into character creation for Edge of the Empire, walking listeners step-by-step through how to build a playable character from concept to crunch. The episode begins with a quick refresher on the core elements that define a character in the FFG Star Wars: Unlike traditional D&D-style builds focused on race and class alone, Star Wars characters are shaped by several narrative and mechanical layers: species, career, specialization trees, obligation, motivations, skills, and equipment. Understanding the Core Pieces of a Star Wars Character Characters start from their background and motiviation, which are mostly narrative, but your motivation can provide a recurring source of bonus experience points used to advance your character. Ash selects "Freedom," while Randall chooses "Droid Rights." Next is choosing a species, which determines starting attributes, wound thresholds, strain thresholds, and sometimes special abilities. The group reviews options like humans, droids, wookiees, and other iconic Star Wars species, each bringing unique mechanical strengths. From there, players select a career, the Star Wars equivalent of a class. Careers such as Smuggler, Technician, Bounty Hunter, Colonist, Explorer, and Hired Gun are available in Edge of the Empire, with other careers available in other core books. Each career also includes specialization trees: talent grids that players spend XP on to get exciting new talents. The Obligation Mechanic One of the defining mechanics of Edge of the Empire is the Obligation system. Each character begins with one or more "obligations": debts, blackmail, criminal records, or personal responsibilities that can become recurring problems during play. Players can choose from a table of suggestions or work with the GM to create their own. We like a d100 table, so we rolled. Ash rolls Blackmail, suggesting their former Imperial ties might come back to haunt them, while Randall rolls Criminal, representing legal trouble tied to a mysterious identity issue in which he's wanted for his own murder. The hosts discuss how obligation works at the table, and also how you can get some extra goodies at character creation for taking on extra Obligation. Spending Experience Points The group also covers starting XP allocation during character creation. Players spend XP to increase attributes, train skills, and unlock talents from specialization trees. Tyler explains the economic balance behind XP spending: Improving characteristics is expensive but powerful, while skills can offer cheaper and more focused improvements. Talents are similarly powerful, but often more complex than straight numerical improvements. Players can also spend XP to unclock new specializations, including from different careers. Tyler, who is in fact a generous GM, gives Ash and Randall a big pile of extra starting XP so that Randall can get force powers without cutting into his slicing skills. Equipment and Starting Gear Finally, character spend starting credits on equipment. Ash and Randall spend some time eyeballing armor, weapons, and other goodies. Even simple purchases like blaster pistols can dramatically shape a character's early playstyle, and the meager starting credits (500 by default) don't go very far. By the end of the episode, the party has assembled a crew: A Twi'lek smuggler pilot with secrets and imperial entanglements A Wookie slicer fighting for droid rights and running from the law A ship, an NPC astromech droid, and a galaxy full of problems The perfect setup for Star Wars. “You would not want to be me.” — Elon MuskYesterday I argued that Dario Amodei is the most interesting man in America because he's doing something nobody else has the balls to do: acting like a human being in public. Elon Musk is the opposite. He has the balls — nobody would deny that — but what's missing is the human-being. Or perhaps Elon is all-too-human, which explains why so many of us — including myself — loathe him.Charles Steel, a London investor, doesn't loathe Elon. In fact, he's self-published a book about him: The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently. Rather than an Elon hagiography, Steel insists, it's an attempt to explain why Musk admirers don't fully understand him, and the Hate-Elon crowd would probably loathe him for different reasons even if they had full navigation rights to his mind.As I said, I'm in the second camp. My dislike of Musk is political — the cosying up to Trump, the DOGE fiasco, the embrace of far-right groups, the transformation of Twitter into a safe space for misanthropes. But Steel makes a case that, in our therapeutic culture, might be harder for some to dismiss: Musk's “curious mind” is the product of childhood bullying, high-functioning autism, an abusive father, and an existential crisis resolved not by philosophy but by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Apparently Elon read Nietzsche and that, of course, only compounded his existential crisis. Probably because Nietzsche was warning us about a future dominated by philistines like Elon Musk.In navigating the Musk mind, Steel discovers three traits: hyper-rationality, existential angst, and belligerence. Lots of Silicon Valley founders have the first. Some have the second. Almost none have the third. The combination produces a man who genuinely believes that the scientific method — the right of anyone to criticize anything — is a secular religion, and that “wokeness” is a competing religion that must be destroyed. Whether or not you buy this self-serving argument, Steel might be right to stress a Musk worldview — even if that worldview is often childishly indefensible.I suggested to Steel that Musk is trapped in a Hobbesian state of nature — frozen alone, unable to read other people, incapable of separating himself from himself. A kind of naturally narcissistic state. This is what I most dislike about Elon. That he's normalizing this state of nature. Nietzsche might (like his contemporary disciple Peter Thiel) have called him the Anti-Christ. He's certainly the anti-Dario. Five Takeaways• Musk Is the Anti-Dario: Amodei acts like a human being in public. Musk has the balls but what's missing is the human-being. Or perhaps he's all-too-human, which explains why so many of us loathe him. The contrast between them is the story of Silicon Valley in 2026.• Steel's Case Is Harder to Dismiss Than You'd Think: Musk's “curious mind” is the product of childhood bullying, high-functioning autism, an abusive father, and an existential crisis resolved not by philosophy but by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He read Nietzsche and it made things worse. Probably because Nietzsche was warning us about philistines like Musk.• Three Traits: Hyper-Rationality, Angst, and Belligerence: Lots of Silicon Valley founders have the first. Some have the second. Almost none have the third. The combination produces a man who believes the scientific method is a secular religion and wokeness is a competing one that must be destroyed. Whether or not you buy this self-serving argument, Steel might be right to stress a Musk worldview — even if it's often childishly indefensible.• Trapped in a Hobbesian State of Nature: Musk is frozen alone, unable to read other people, incapable of separating himself from himself. A kind of naturally narcissistic state. What's most dangerous about Elon is that he's normalising this state of nature for the rest of us.• The Anti-Christ and the Anti-Dario: Nietzsche might, like his contemporary disciple Peter Thiel, have called Musk the Anti-Christ. He's certainly the anti-Dario. The contrast between Amodei and Musk is the story of Silicon Valley — and perhaps America — in 2026. About the GuestCharles Steel is a London-based investor and writer. He has worked with Tony Blair and Save the Children. His book The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently is self-published and out now. His next project is on Albert Camus.References:• The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently by Charles Steel — the book under discussion.• Episode 2835: Why Dario Amodei Might Be the 21st Century's First Real Leader — yesterday's TWTW, the direct counterpoint.• Zero to One by Peter Thiel — referenced by Steel on Asperger-like traits and Silicon Valley success.• The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams — the book Musk credits with resolving his existential crisis.• The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus — Steel's next project, and the question he'd most like to discuss with Musk.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. In Keen On America, Andrew brings his pointed Transatlantic wit to making sense of the United States — hosting daily interviews about the history and future of this now venerable Republic. Star Wars news has a lot to do with Galaxy's Edge and Video Games. Then James tells us all about a guy named Obi-Wan Kenobi? Finally: The bricks are back in the sandbox, and this time they brought history with them. In this episode, we dive into “Lego Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past”, the latest chapter in the delightfully scrambled galaxy far, far away. If you thought canon was sturdy, this special gleefully pops it apart like a Millennium Falcon mid-hyperdrive tune-up and snaps it back together in ways that would make even Darth Vader tilt his helmet. We break down the biggest twists, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it deep cuts, and the moments that had us pausing to say, “Wait… did they really just do that?” From unexpected character mashups to lore-bending brick wizardry, this installment leans fully into playful chaos while still sneaking in heartfelt beats under the plastic sheen. We also talk about how the special connects to the larger LEGO Star Wars universe, what longtime fans of Star Wars will appreciate most, and whether this story truly honors the “pieces of the past” or just joyfully rearranges them. Is it a clever remix of galactic history? A nostalgia-powered starfighter? Or just pure LEGO-fueled fun with a hyperdrive strapped to it? Grab your kyber crystals and your brick separators. It's time to rebuild the galaxy… again.

From starting out with big swings to maybe playing it a little safer, Galaxy's Edge has had a long journey from conception to now. There's no one better to have on the show than the great Nick Tierce to talk all about where we started, how the park has grown since then, and what these changes mean for the future. Nick brings Kara on a journey through Galaxy's Edge history in this enlightening, vulnerable, and fun conversation!Find Nick and all his social media on his website (https://nicktierce.com/) and follow him on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/daringcuties)Follow along with Kara and the IALW Podcast on Instagram!Support the project and Kara's zine on Patreon and check out her Celebration Database Blog!If you want to tell YOUR fandom story, send an e-mail to intoalargerworldproject@gmail.com"Beauty Flow" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
When observing comic books, the miracles come in big or small ways. This week on the podcast, we're discussing a resurrection we previously thought unimaginable. Stephen R Bissette, who gained legendary status working on titles like Saga of the Swamp Thing, crafted his masterpiece in the mid-nineties. Tyrant was meant to run fifty issues or more, but only four saw print before disaster struck the industry, and Bissette pulled up stakes, leaving comics to focus on family and a more financially stable situation. We've spent years searching for Tyrant in the dollar bins, picking up an issue here and there. As much as we love Bissette's work on Swamp Thing, Tyrant represents the artist at his purest, most thematically forward. Even at four issues, Tyrant is a masterpiece, expressing the agony and beauty of life, as we follow a Tyrannosaurus Rex from conception to birth. It's easy to mourn the story we did not get, but we must also celebrate the story we did. It is enough, and thankfully, we're not the only ones who thought so. Chris Stevens, of the newly formed Lighthouse Press, convinced Bissette that now was the time to re-release Tyrant in both a Complete Edition and a Deluxe Artist Edition. Stevens also hired cartoonist Jim Rugg (who recently shot a Stacks video with us) to oversee the production of these new additions. Together, they'll hopefully bring a massive new readership to Tyrant and give this lost masterpiece the recognition it never got. We're extremely happy to have Stephen R Bissette, Jim Rugg, and Chris Stevens on the podcast this week. Together, we place Tyrant in the context of its creation and explore why now is the time for its resurrection. We discuss the themes Bissette excavates in Tyrant and where the story was going before he had to pull the plug. We also discuss the heartbreak of pulling the plug and all the humanity within and without its pages. The 90s comic book scene. You had to be there. The Image Revolution. Pouches. Rob Liefeld and Spike Lee making Levi's commercials together. The Death of Superman was going to pay Brad's way into college somehow. The distribution implosion. The speculator flight. Devastation. Apocalypse. Something our earthbound dinosaurs also understood quite well. Please recognize the miracle that is Tyrant's resurrection by visiting the Lighthouse Press Kickstarter page and signing up for notification of its official launch. Also, follow Stephen R Bissette on BlueSky and Facebook. Follow Jim Rugg on Instagram. Follow Lighthouse Press on Instagram and BlueSky. Galaxy fans, take a breath and step back from the ledge. The 4–1 loss in Colorado wasn't pretty, but there were still glimpses of what this team can be according to Michelle and Christian. Now the Gs return home for two big opportunities: CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 vs Mount Pleasant and a league clash with Sporting Kansas City. On paper, LA should be the better side in both. NWSL season kicks off this weekend as well. More fun to come, stay tuned!
Humiliation at altitude. What looked like a gritty road performance turned into a nightmare in Commerce City. After Joao Klauss found the equalizer, a moment of madness from Gabriel Pec left the Galaxy with 10 men, leading to a 4-1 collapse and extending the road losing streak to a staggering 18 matches.TODAY'S AGENDA:

WoW Classic As Jehdai pointed out, we have our first 70 (Sethos) and light activity on the 20th Anniversary TBC launch on Dreamscythed Horde side. We have the guild available with the guild bank open and invite others to join us in Outland. In other Classic news: Reminder that there are now 3 launchers for Classic (‘Original’, ‘Anniversary’, ‘Era’) “Original” Classic is progressing with Mists of Pandaria. The guild is available on Horde side on Galakras. If I have this right, MoP classic uses the modern guild interface so we have the new interface showing 651 members. “Anniversary” Classic which is now at TBC as mentioned above. “Era” classic is a separate launcher with 3 game modes: ‘Classic Era’ which is forever frozen in the original game (pre-TBC). We were on Mankrik here but really no activity or guild. “Season of Discovery” which is where experiments were performed by the devs which some expect may lead to the anticipated “Classic Plus” many hope for. We have no real activity there currently. “Hardcore” is the 3rd game mode in the Era client and probably our 2nd most active within the classic modes. We have an Alliance side guild on Doomhowl and some activity on the Horde side of Doomhowl but no guild currently. Lars plans to return to his attempt at a “Solo Self-Found” run to 60 in Hardcore but that has been on pause for quite some time. We did have guild members make it to 60 on the hardcore server previously. Here's your first warning: Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring spoilers ahead! Patrick Horvath returns for a full spoilers breakdown of the sequel series to IDW Publishing's smash hit. Together, we consider the cartoonist's joyous relationship with beauty and horror, where Monica the Duck finds herself in the last panels of the final issue, and why we were so wrong about George the last time we spoke with Horvath. Or, were we? Sequels are a terrible, stressful thing to attempt, but we all know why they happen. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees was too damn successful to be left alone, and thankfully, Horvath, the book's shepherd, returned to his drawing table with passion and a mission for his characters. Rite of Spring is not only better than the original series, but it must also be considered as one of the best comic book sequels of all time. And it's because it might leave certain readers fur-ious (sorry, not sorry) regarding where Horvath leaves (or drags) certain characters. Patrick Horvath is not afraid to hurt his comic book kids. However, as we discuss, there is as much love and beauty in his series as there is grotesque horror. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring is a deeply human book, and as such, it stirs profound feelings within the reader. Also, yo, another sequel is coming. What can we expect? We put that question to Horvath, too. All six issues of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring are out now from IDW Publishing. Continue this conversation with Patrick Horvath by following him on Bluesky, Instagram, and his Website. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that fully supports hexing your terrible ex. This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with screenwriter (Hulu's Crush, Amazon Prime's The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy) and return guest Kirsten King (@kirstenlking) to discuss her debut novel, A Good Person, which will be released on March 31, 2026. We chat with Kirsten about pro-bono exorcisms, Boston socioeconomic class divides, performative white activism, and leaning into being a “bad bisexual”. Heads up for light spoilers ahead (nothing that you couldn't figure out from the book jacket). A Good Person follows the story of Kirsten's unhinged protagonist Lillian, a deeply flawed bisexual millennial that she describes as a “soup of personality disorders”. Lillian is the type of character we love to hate-watch as she charges from one questionable decision to the next leaving mess after mess in her wake. When Lillian's situationship with Henry leads to a crushing breakup instead of lifelong romance, she reacts the way anyone would– by getting drunk and casting a hex on him. Unfortunately for her, she becomes the prime murder suspect when Henry is found dead the very next day. She really should have gone for one of those protection spells from Etsy after her drunken foray into witchcraft. Instead, Lillian is flung headfirst into a twisting psychological thriller as she seeks to clear her name and discover the truth. You can pre-order A Good Person wherever you get your books, but we highly recommend choosing an independent bookstore. We received advance copies and honestly could not put it down. If you enjoy books about unreliable, unlikeable narrators where you're never quite sure what is going to happen next, you'll love Kirsten's A Good Person.
