News: The newest Disneyland documentary we are all waiting for has a release date. Disneyland Handcrafted will premiere on Disney+ and Disney YouTube on January 22nd. The film covers the creation of Disneyland with rare, first-hand archival footage leading up to the opening in July, 1955. Leslie Iwerks and her team searched through over 100 hours of raw material from Disneyland in its earliest days. - https://disneyparksblog.com/disney-experiences/disneyland-handcrafted-release-date-and-more-details/ The first part of the Disneyland Forward project has a permit, with work beginning soon. The permit is for a 3.2 million square foot, 8-level open parking structure with 302 EV charging spots. The new structure should hold 6,000 vehicles and feature a rideshare area, and transit hub. The process from design to completion will be sped up with the 3D printing process, as opposed to the previous molding process that could take thousands of hours to get just right. When you read The Viper, the new Zig and Nola novel from Brad Meltzer, it doesn't take long to see how comics inform the author's creativity. As he says during our conversation, “It's Superman and Batman. It's Spider-Man and Wolverine.” Meltzer grew up a comic book kid, and the ideas he found in Marvel Comics and DC Comics remain at the forefront of his imagination. It's been a minute since he's played in our favorite medium, having written stellar runs on Green Arrow and Justice League of America, and we can never forget the monumental event that was Identity Crisis. However, he's never been far from comics, and it's evident to anyone who's experienced his Ordinary People Change the World series with Chris Eliopoulos and his novels. The Viper, released this week from William Morrow, is Meltzer's return to the thriller. It's a zippy, twisty narrative about a dying man who delivers his suit to the funeral home tasked with handling his body, shortly before he's murdered, advancing his earthly exit. The death quickly reunites Meltzer's heroes from The Lightning Rod and The Escape Artist, Zig and Nola, his Superman and Batman, and plunges them into a conspiracy with ties to Nola's past. We got a lot from The Viper, and we bring it all to Brad Melzer on this week's podcast. We discuss his life as a comic book kid, how he can't escape comics, and what he might have on the horizon in terms of the four-color medium. Yes, his Ghost Machine collaboration with Geoff Johns and Gene Ha is coming, but there seems to be something else, too. We try to tease the news out of him. Naturally, we have to touch on the bad lighting, the extremely questionable decision to allow Ingrid Pitt to use karate against the Myrka, the “cold war make-up” look, fart jokes, and how any sort of nuance has been stripped away from the Silurians and the Sea Devils in this story. In this episode, we explore the 1981 television pilot K-9 and Company, a unique and historic entry in the Doctor Who universe. Produced as a proposed Doctor Who spin-off, K-9 and Company stars the legendary Elisabeth Sladen as investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith alongside the robotic dog K9, voiced by John Leeson. While both were iconic former companions of the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who, they had never appeared together on screen until the K-9 and Company pilot episode, titled A Girl's Best Friend. Broadcast on BBC1 as a Doctor Who related Christmas special on 28 December 1981, K-9 and Company remains a vital piece of the Doctor Who franchise history despite not being commissioned for a full series. The existence of K-9 and Company was largely due to Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner, who wanted to bring Elisabeth Sladen back to the Doctor Who family. His initial 1980 plan for the actress would have seen Sarah Jane Smith travel in the TARDIS during the Doctor Who transition from Tom Baker to Peter Davison. However, Sladen wanted a role that evolved beyond her previous Doctor Who narrative. Simultaneously, the Doctor Who production team was struggling with the logistics of K9. While K9 was a massive hit with Doctor Who viewers, the prop was technically awkward and made the Doctor Who heroes too capable. The solution was K-9 and Company, a child-orientated Doctor Who spin-off where Sarah Jane Smith would be the central heroic lead. Before K-9 and Company, Elisabeth Clara Heath Sladen built a career in theatre and television, appearing in Z-Cars and Doomwatch. Her work on Z-Cars led directly to her casting in Doctor Who. Interestingly, the Doctor Who role of the new companion for The Time Warrior was originally cast with April Walker. However, Doctor Who lead Jon Pertwee felt the chemistry was wrong, leading to Sladen being cast as the definitive Sarah Jane Smith. She played the role in Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976, eventually returning for the K-9 and Company pilot. Her Doctor Who legacy continued in 2006 with David Tennant and the successful Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Following her death in 2011, Doctor Who aired a tribute during The Impossible Astronaut, proving her status as a Doctor Who icon. The voice behind the metal dog in K-9 and Company, John Leeson, first voiced K9 in the 1977 Doctor Who serial The Invisible Enemy. While Tom Baker had a difficult relationship with the K9 prop, he worked well with Leeson. Leeson briefly left Doctor Who to avoid being typecast but returned for K-9 and Company and later the Doctor Who anniversary special The Five Doctors. The K-9 and Company pilot also featured Colin Jeavons, known for his work in The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the Doctor Who serial The Underwater Menace, and Mary Wimbush, a stalwart of The Archers. As I was listening to an episode of the Ludology podcast recently, one focused on games and health, I started to think about how much the people we play with influence our gameplay experience. Selecting board games based on the audience is much more important than we may like to believe. Get it wrong, and you have one player rebelling and playing opposite to expectations, another disengaging completely, and the overall mood shifting from playful enjoyment to uncomfortable tension.
