LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 1, 2024) – On March 5th, 1964, following the postponement of legislation aimed at eliminating segregation in public accommodations in Kentucky, some 10,000 residents of the Commonwealth came together with notable civil rights activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jackie Robinson to participate in a March on Frankfort. This interracial protest was designed to exert pressure on the governor, urging support for a more robust legislative proposal.  On this episode of ‘Behind the Blue', UK professor of history Gerald Smith talks about the historical context and significance of the march, the legacy it left behind, and how, 60 years on, it continues to be commemorated. From 1997-2005, Smith served as the director of the African American Studies and Research Program at UK, and he is the author, editor, or co-editor of five books including his newest from 2023: ‘Slavery and Freedom in the Bluegrass State: Revisiting My Old Kentucky Home'. We had Dr. Gerald Smith on the show quite some time ago. Dr. Gerald Smith is a dentist and doctor that helps people recover their health. He's an amazing individual that looks at all the different aspects of health. He's really into cranial sacral, chiropractic adjustments, energy healing and natural health. He's truly a great guy helping to change the world! In this show we talked about how moder medicine needs to change and how we can do it. Unfortunately most alopathic standard medical doctors (although well intentioned starting out) have been brainwashed by pharmeceutical companies to be sales people for drugs instead of somebody who tries to help heal people. Most doctors know about drugs and surgery but not how to help the patient get better. Although they want to help people unfortunately they are controlled by insurance companies and drug companies while always being scared into using the "standard of care" treatment or face a potential lawsuit and have their medical license taken away. Dr. Gerald Smith is fortunately outside of that world operating his practice. We talked about post concussion remedies, healing autoimmune disease and even cancers naturally. On Last Thing! As always your support via your donations and bookmarking our Amazon link to use each time you purchase is how we keep our show going. In the wake of the sedition trial's collapse, Justice Department prosecutor John Rogge travels overseas and uncovers a bombshell. He finds evidence of a coordinated effort to subvert American democracy… as well as the names of high-profile Americans involved. Rogge then returns to America... and goes rogue. Risking his career as a prosecutor, he makes public what he's discovered about the fascist threat and the Americans who supported it. And he offers a prescient warning about an American criminal justice system that is ill-equipped to defend democracy from those who seek to destroy it.

T'was 1869 (nice) and a farmer named William “Stub” Newell hired two men to dig a well on his property. He told the men where to dig and left them to do their thing. The men dug and dug. They were only about three feet deep when they hit something. It felt like a stone. They dug around it. They cleared dirt off of it. They soon realized that they hadn't hit a stone; they'd hit a gigantic foot. They kept digging. When they cleared all the dirt away, they realized that they were looking at the petrified body of a giant. T'was a sight to behold! He was a full blown meaty boi! *Kristin first told this story during our live episode taping at Obsessed Fest, where she was so nervous that she couldn't talk about the Cardiff Giant's massive dong. Brandi, however, had no such misgivings. We'll put the recording from the live show on Patreon at the $10 level as soon as we get it. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The giant in the earth,” by Stephen Sears for American Heritage “When giants roamed the earth,” by Mark rose for Archaeology  “The Cardiff giant hoax,” by James Taylor Dunn for New York History “The Cardiff giant was just a big hoax,” by Kat Eschner for Smithsonian Magazine “Fake of a fake of a fake: A giant tale of local lore,” by Gerald Smith for Press Connects YOU'RE STILL READING? Dr. Gerald Smith has led workshops at the storied Esalen Institute for over 50 years. He is friends with one of its originals co-founders, Michael Murphy, whom he interviewed on an earlier podcast. Jerry attended the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University, earning an M.B.A and Doctoral degree in Educational Psychology. Jerry is still a practicing clinical psychologist at the age of 92. And he is as sharp and quick-witted as ever. He has written two books, hosted a T.V. show, and loves leading workshops for couples. Jerry participated in some of the pioneering psychedelic research experiments (in the 1950's) when it was legal and quite provocative. He reported positive results using psychedelics and discusses some of his own experiences, along with the tremendous benefits and pitfalls of plant and lab-based medicine. Jerry believes psychedelics can expand our perceptual field. He stresses that psychedelics can potentially benefit people suffering from depression, anxiety, and trauma, but that caution is warranted. Jerry was also trained by such luminaries as Virginia Satir and Fritz Pearls. He knows he was privileged to know each of them personally and professionally … and pulls back the curtains on what they were really like. In this podcast, Jerry discusses how Psychedelics, Virginia Satir, and Fritz Pearls impacted his perceptual field …. and what matters most at this stage in his life.WCMI networking group A networking group for mindfulness-focused clinicians dedicated to learning together & collaborating for more information click here

Gerald Smith is a Professor of Marketing at Boston College. He's been a Pricing Consultant with Strategic Pricing Group and Monitor Group since 1987. Gerald is the author of a relatively new book, “Getting Price Right: The Behavioral Economics of Profitable Pricing”. In this episode, Gerald discusses the power psychology holds in pricing in relation to behavioral economics as he talks about the soft side of pricing alongside the importance of framing.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Find out what the hard side and soft side of pricing are all about, and why the behavioral side of pricing is more powerful than the logical side Understand why companies do framing, as well as why a frame of reference is important in pricing Discover why there's power in psychology when talking about behavioral economics   “Ask yourself and ask your pricing team, what do customers get and what do they pay for what they get? And say, is everybody in the industry doing it the same way?” – Gerald Smith   Topics Covered: 01:39 – The start of Gerald's pricing journey with Thomas Nagle and Reed Holden 03:08 – Gerald talks about his dissertation in relation to his new book, Getting Price Right 04:33 – The behavioral/soft side as potentially more powerful than the logical side 06:39 – The main point of Getting Price Right – the psychology of the sellers, the people that really set price 09:11 – Talking about the dominant pricing bias of salespeople giving discounts all the time 13:07 – Pricing strategy vs. pricing orientation 15:15 – Framing as one of the foundational theories of economics 18:09 – Discussion about Apple's pricing slogan and the company having huge margins 22:45 – The power of behavioral economics – psychology; analysis vs. gut 24:12 – Talking about frame of references and setting price metrics 27:45 – Gerald's piece of pricing advice for today's listeners   Key Takeaways: “We always think of pricing as a hard skill, as a quantitative skill. My students say to me, ‘Professor, tell me the formula for setting price.' And I say, ‘No, no, no, folks.' I mean, pricing is a soft skill that also brings in hard skills, for sure, so there are both skill sets.” – Gerald Smith “Sellers are also psychological and absolutely driven by psychology.” – Gerald Smith “One of the very dominant biases in pricing is that people have a tendency to discount price all the time. It's very irrational, and it, in fact, violates the principles of both psychology but especially economics, because economics says that people should rationally maximize the profits of the outcomes that are before them. And in the case of many people that apply this kind of discounting bias, they don't focus on the profits; they focus on the sales, and sales are not profits.” – Gerald Smith “Salespeople that work for somebody else are more likely to discount, but salespeople that do their own thing are less likely to discount. When they're selling their own place, they want to make sure that they maximize their profits if they can, but if they're selling for somebody else, they're happy to take that deal. That's because they get paid a commission on the deal. It is endemic to the world of pricing that people do this.” – Gerald Smith “Psychology is powerful. Analysis is terrific, but psychology is absolutely vital.” – Gerald Smith “Consumers or buyers give, but they also get. And so, if I can change what they get and what they give, then that can be very powerful.” – Gerald Smith   People / Resources Mentioned: Getting Price Right: The Behavioral Economics of Profitable Pricing: https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Price-Right-Behavioral-Profitable/dp/0231190700 Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything: https://www.amazon.com/Freakonomics-Economist-Explores-Hidden-Everything/dp/0060731338   Connect with Gerald Smith: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-gerald-smith-91b8383 Email: gerald.smith@bc.edu   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

On Tuesday, March 27, 1962, Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel met with Catholic School Superintendent Henry C. Bezou and a group of parish priests at Notre Dame Seminary on South Carrollton Avenue. At 7 p.m. Monsignor Bezou announced that all New Orleans Diocese Catholic schools would accept all qualified Catholic children (as determined by age and readiness testing), with no exceptions, who might apply for the upcoming school year.  No mention of race was included in Bezou's statement but, as Rummel had been outspoken regarding ending segregation in his schools because it was morally wrong and sinful, the message was clear.  Segregation  in Catholic schools would end at the start of the 1962-1963 school year. This week in Louisiana. Audubon State Historic Site See the landscape and wildlife that inspired one of America’s most famous naturalists. Before John James Audubon became associated with the environmental organization, zoo, park and aquarium that bears his name, he was a wildlife painter with a keen eye for detail. Audubon’s ties to Louisiana date back to 1821, when he was hired to teach painting to the teenage daughter of St. Francisville plantation owners. He spent four months teaching and painting at the house known today as Oakley Plantation, creating 32 of the paintings that were eventually published in his bestselling Birds of America. The Audubon State Historic site commemorates the history of the home, and in particular, Audubon’s stay there. Oakley Plantation was built between 1799 and 1806, in a colonial architectural style that is simple but sophisticated. Its high ceilings spanning three stories, spacious verandas and entrances to landscaped grounds give visitors a glimpse into the setting that inspired Audubon. Postcards from Louisiana. The killing of George Floyd sparked a renewed racial justice reckoning in our nation. The national response to police violence against Black Americans has affected our country and communities in a way previously unseen in a generation. These recent events have led our communities to examine more closely the impact that injustice and racism have on an individual, structural, and institutional level. As a result, more young Catholics have begun to engage in difficult conversations about the history and present reality of racism in the U.S. Catholic Church. This virtual Theology on Tap brought together a panel of young Black Catholic leaders to engage challenging questions about the spiritual and practical actions needed to work towards a culture of anti-racism, which values the equal dignity of every human life. The panel discussed the history of racism within the U.S. Catholic Church, how racial injustice exists in our communities today, the role of white privilege, and practical ways that Church leaders and young Catholics can work towards a more anti-racist and racially just Church. Four Black Catholic leaders explored questions such as: How has our nation’s history of racism influenced our understanding and structures of racism in the Catholic Church? How is racial injustice present in the Church today? How does white privilege play a role in propagating complacency with racism in our Church communities? What are practical steps that Catholics in leadership and in the pews can take towards a culture of anti-racism in our parishes and communities? In what ways can young Catholics actively work towards anti-racism and be true advocates for racial justice?   Panelists Ogechi Akalegbere is a Nigerian-American who is the host, executive editor, and content creator for the podcast Tell Me, If You Can. She also works as the Christian service coordinator at Connelly School of the Holy Child. Fr. Robert Boxie is the chaplain at Howard University and the priest-in-residence at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, DC. He had been the parochial vicar at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Largo, Maryland, since July 2017. Gerald Smith, Jr. is the principal at St. Thomas More Catholic Academy in Washington, DC, where he previously taught 4th-8th grade science. He formerly taught at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland. Shannen Dee Williams is the Albert Lepage Assistant Professor of History at Villanova University. She is the author of a forthcoming book with the working title Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle.

The relationship of the Left to these protests, however, has been unclear. Claiming authority under the state of emergency in Richmond, Mayor Levar Stoney had the Stonewall Jackson statue on Monument Avenue taken down on Wednesday, as residents gathered and reacted to the removal. Governor Ralph Northam walked back some reopening guidelines for restaurants and bars after seeing an increase in cases of COVID-19 in states like Florida and Texas. The race for Governor of Virginia is beginning to heat up as former Governor Terry McAuliffe seems poised to announce his candidacy. Mayor Stoney is promising transparency and accountability in the Richmond police department with new chief Gerald Smith.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 73 °F, and you can expect a hot, humid day ahead of you. No rain for the next couple of days, so take care to water your plants and gardens!Water coolerRichmond Police are reporting that last Thursday afternoon, Dominic Thompson, 31, was shot to death on the 2600 block of Ford Avenue in the city’s East End.As of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 489↘️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 8↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 58↘️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 14, Henrico: 19, and Richmond: 25). Since this pandemic began, 220 people have died in the Richmond region. The COVID Tracking Project Twitter account continues to give me nightmares with their daily chartsandgraphs summary of the national coronavirus picture, and you should probably give them a follow. As we see reported cases of the virus spike in the South and the West, I do think this is important to remember: “Despite the numbers you see here, more people were almost certainly infected at the peak of the spring outbreak than are infected now. Testing was strictly limited, and only caught a small % of cases. But if the trends continue, this surge could reach or surpass those levels.” So, yes, things are bad right now, but they were worse in the spring when we had no real idea just how bad things were.Protests continued in Richmond over the weekend. Some of my favorite moments from across the last couple of days included: Sure Hand Signs updated the Richmond postcard mural on Charm School with imagery from the last 30-odd days of protests, the big huge puppets made an appearance at a march in rememberance of the Stonewall riots of 1969, someone added a little landscaping to the area around the Marcus David-Peters sign at the Lee Circle, I can’t get enough of this trombone guy, and Sabrina Moreno at the Richmond Times-Dispatch put together a nice piece about the projection art that’s become a mainstay of the evening experience at the Lee Monument. However, on Friday night, either the Richmond Police Department, Virginia State Police, the Virginia Capitol Police, or some combination thereof once again shot rubber bullets and chemical weapons into a crowd of protestors and into a residential neighborhood. Please watch this video in its entirety and see Allen Avenue turned into a war zone by our local law enforcement. I think Marc Cheatham from the Cheats Movement put it well: “The videos I’m seeing tonight are too much for me. I’m frustrated, sad, angry, confused, and sick and tired of this scene every few days. The police know the routine, yet it is becoming increasingly clear that they choose when and where they want to show force. Enough already.” Who’s even in charge and who has the authority to put a stop to this kind of police behavior? The answer to that question might by Gerald Smith, a former deputy chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Police Department and, starting Wednesday, the new chief of the Richmond Police Department. Let’s just say that the hiring of Chief Gerald Smith was not the smoothest transition possible. On Friday afternoon, Mark Robinson at the RTD reported that Interim Chief Jody Blackwell had resigned his position of Interim Chief not even two weeks after he took the job (with an email to officers, subject line “What’s up Troops?”). Then, later that evening, June 26th, Mayor Stoney announced he’d picked Gerald Smith to take up the job permanently. Quick turnaround for sure, but, muddling the process waters further, Robinson also found an ad in yesterday’s paper announcing a nationwide search for a new police chief—with the recruitment period beginning on June 28th and the application review period beginning July 26th. Without being on the inside, it’s impossible to know the sequence of events and what pushed the Mayor to cast aside an apparently planned month-long process. Maybe he vibed with Gerald Smith. Maybe Blackwell’s resignation created an unacceptable level of internal turmoil within the police department. Maybe Blackwell’s past officer-involved fatal shooting made him an untenable interim chief. Maybe the folks who placed the ad just forgot to talk to the folks making the hiring decision. Honestly, all of those seem just as likely to me at this point. Everything involving the local police feels chaotic, and I know I would feel a lot better if the folks in charge just slowed down and spent some time opening up their decision-making process and bringing Richmonders along on some of these choices and changes.Speaking of changes, the Hermitage Road Historic District Association released a statement about the A.P. Hill monumentwhich currently spends its time making the intersection of Hermitage and Laburnum one of the most dangerous intersections in the city. Here’s the money quote: “We are asking that the Mayor and the City Council of Richmond create a plan to remove the monument and remains expeditiously. We understand the reinterment process may take more time, so we ask that the statue itself be removed as soon as possible.” And, yes! A.P. Hill is actually buried under that monument which makes it a gravesite—and a veteran’s gravesite at that. Last week, in response to some questions from Councilmember Hilbert, the City Attorney said he had folks looking into the double complicated process of removing a Confederate monument that is basically also a gravestone.National Teacher of the Year Rodney Robinson has a great column in the paper calling for getting rid of Confederate school names and mascots—specifically Hanover’s Lee-Davis, home of the actual, literal Confederates. Robinson quotes from Faith Hubbard, class of 2019, “Being forced to call myself a Confederate as a Black student at this school was so disgusting and humiliating. My friends and I made many attempts to contact the school board about this and they shut us down each time.” The RTD’s Kenya Hunter and C. Suarez Rojas, say that last week the “Hanover County School Board abruptly adjourned in a split vote Tuesday after a two-hour closed session, putting off an expected decision on a pair of schools named for the Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and ‘Stonewall’ Jackson.” Just rename the dang schools already, Hanover! Also from Kenya Hunter, this piece looks at just how few Black students attend Maggie Walker Governor’s School. Read this and remember that it’s not just about changing names and taking down monuments, it’s also about changing and taking down the systems that lead to Black kids making up just 7% of the student body at our regional governor’s school. This morning’s longreadRichmond’s Confederate Monuments Were Used to Sell a Segregated NeighborhoodSo much has happened since this June 11th article, but it’s still interesting to read about some of the original context underlaying Monument Avenue.Throughout the development of the neighborhood, real-estate companies used the monuments to entice buyers. In 1913, the Greater Richmond Realty Company took out an ad in the Richmond Times-Dispatch that included an illustration of the proposed Jackson monument under the headline: “Stuart, Lee, Davis, Have Already Been Honored. No Longer Neglect Jackson.” The depiction of the intersection along with a tree-lined field in the background made it easier for potential buyers to envision their home overlooking the Confederate general. The ad implied that Jackson would not be fully honored until all the lots were claimed and occupied. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

In 1869, two well diggers in Cardiff, N.Y., unearthed an enormous figure made of stone. More than 600,000 people flocked to see the mysterious giant, but even as its fame grew, its real origins were coming to light. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Cardiff giant, one of the greatest hoaxes of the 19th century. We'll also ponder the effects of pink and puzzle over a potentially painful treatment. Intro: Edgar Rice Burroughs invented a variant of chess for a book set on Mars. The Results You Want In this episode of the Outside Health and Fitness podcast I talk with Gerald Smith about the connection between hormones and weight loss. If you’ve ever been frustrated that even though you’re doing all the right things you’re just not seeing the weight-loss results you want…you need to check out what my guest Gerald Smith shares on today’s show… On Today’s show you’ll discover… …the role hormones play in healthy sustained weight-loss; ..what you can do (beyond counting calories) to achieve your goals; .. and an amazing clean eating program that can help you realize your health goals. call the show: 207-370-9797 email: sws0926@gmail.com Become an Outside Health and Fitness Fan, support the show and get exclusive rewards! Subscribe to Outside Health and Fitness iTunes | Android | Email | RSS | More Options Gerald Smith My guest today is Gerald Smith you might remember him from episode 156. Gerald is a personal trainer from London England. He’s a former amateur boxer, writer and speaker who specializes in high intensity interval training. 3:10 Let’s talk about hormones and weight loss… When it comes to weight loss many people approach it with the idea that if you eat fewer calories than you burn you’ll lose weight. This is true in theory however there are other factors to consider that play a role. One such area to consider are how hormones effect your body and how it responds. 4:20 Sometimes there’s a vicious cycle that occurs isn’t there. Stress can cause you to gain weight which causes you to become more stressed and the cycle continues. Stress is a key factor and influences certain hormones in the body that impact how effectively you can lose weight. For instance when you’re stressed you release a hormone called cortisol. [Cortisol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortisol) is one of the hormones you would release as part of the fight or flight response. In days gone by your body would release Coritsol during periods of stress but they were short lived. You would eventually calm down and everything would return to proper balance. The problem today is that we’re constantly under stress with very few chances to calm back down and the result is a slow down in your metabolism and weight gain. 6:30 What sorts of advice do you give clients who are looking to lose weight but find themselves in a continuous level of stress. There are a few things you can do to help reduce stress and relax. Deep breathing is a good way to help the body relax and “de-stress”. Meditation is also a good practice to help reduce levels of stress in the body. The more relaxed you can become the better your results will be as you reduce the production of Cortisol in the body. Nutrition is another key factor to consider in achieving your weight loss goals. It’s important to reduce the processed foods you’re consuming as part of your diet. Reducing sugar is another key to help level out this undulation between sugar and stress in the body. Another hormone that comes into play when sugar is consumed is insulin. Insulin works to reduce the sugar levels in your blood. It goes past where the normal blood sugar level should be causing you to release Cortisol and that tells your body your hungry. You crave sweets so you consume more sugar and your blood sugar levels spike back up and you have this roller coaster effect happening in the body. 9:04 What about nature and being outdoors how can that help with weight loss? Yes, being outdoors can really help. One of the key things is called Vitamin D which is also a hormone and something we get from the sun. Vitamin D is essential for many things in the body including reducing inflammation in the body. It’s a key nutrient for your skin, your bones and many other areas of the body. 10:54 Weight loss is a very complicated matter, isn’t it? It is. You have calories in and calories out, hormones and even your gut health plays a role. There are actually more bacteria in your gut than there are cells in your body! A lot of people have an imbalance between the good bacteria and the bad bacteria. The problem this causes is that it makes it more difficult to digest food. Digestion is a key thing, you need to get your nutrients and you don’t want food going bad in your system. All these factors are working together to help or hinder your weight loss efforts. 13:57 Over time things can build up but it’s also amazing how quickly the body can recover, isn’t it? Yes, and one of the first thing you have to do is just cut out all the processed foods. When we have foods our bodies doesn’t recognize it comes into the system and the body does the best it can. Overtime it’s these types of foods that cause issues in your body. With a good diet including protein, good quality fats, nutrients and vitamins you can start to reverse a lot of the process that have begun to deteriorate your health,. 15:38 Exercise can help reduce your stress levels as well right? Yes and No…. Exercise does relieve stress however it has to be done right. If you’re in a stressed state you don’t want to “hammer the body” with really intense exercise because you may actually fuel the fire. If you’re doing all the right things but not getting the results you want you may need to seek out a professional, do some tests and see what’s going on. 18:49 What if you have a hard time meditating any suggestions you have for people who have a hard time calming down?  The more you do it the easier it seems to get. Focus on breathing can help. Practice really helps it become easier for you over time. Another thing is to reduce your screen time at night. Lights at night tell the mind and body it’s still day time and it can disrupt your meditation and relaxation. 20:51 Where can we follow you on line?  Website: Personal Trainer City of London Twitter: @geraldsmith20 Google+: Gerald Smith YouTube: Gerald’s YouTube Channel Bonus Article from Gerald’s Blog How to Lose Weight: 30 Experts Reveal their Top Weight Loss Tips Clean Eating One of the best ways to keep everything in balance and make sure you’re giving your body proper nutrition is by eating clean. Subscribe to Outside Health and Fitness iTunes | Android | Email | RSS | More Options High Intensity Interval Training About Gerald Smith Gerald is a personal trainer from London England. He’s a former amateur boxer, writer and speaker who specializes in high intensity interval training. Gerald's background in boxing lead him to develop a system called HEET (high energy efficient training), a workout so intense it’s the equivalent of going 10 rounds in the boxing ring! [5:14] How does HIIT work? Research has shown that exercising at a high intensity for a short period of time is equal to steady state training done over longer periods. It's a very efficient type of exercise. You also burn more calories during a HIIT session. [8:35] What about the rest period? Should it be equal to, longer or shorter? A beginner may need a longer period of recovery than someone who is more experienced with HIIT. A very hard HIIT session might use a 1 to 1 or  1 to 2 recovery ratio. You can also do 1 to 3 or even 1 to 4. It also depends on your goals and objectives. What are you training for? [10:28] What are types of exercise can you do using high intensity interval training? Running Cycling Compound Exercises or exercises that use lots of muscle groups. (body-weight, kettle bell etc..) [11:44] What other benefits do you get from HIIT? You'll see improved endurance and performance. You will also see a better tolerance for lactic acid and a lower heart rate. [13:17] Listener Questions Freak Health: Should exercise intensity decrease when someone fatigues, or should they continue to push through with max effort, although slower? As time goes on you are going to fatigue and there is a limit to how long you can go at max intensity. If you are experiencing more than a 10% decrease in your intensity level you should consider stopping. When fatigue becomes to much you don't get any gains for the high intensity periods. [15:22] Pete F from Google asks: "How does HIIT affect the heart's slow and fast twitch muscle fibers? Generally speaking you're either someone who is more inclined to sprint type exercise or endurance type exercise, based on your muscle physiology. Someone who has fast twitch muscle fibers are not going to like endurance type exercise. We all have both fast and slow twitch muscle fibers in our bodies. With HIIT both sets of muscle fibers are going to see improvements. If you are already inclined to sprint type work you won't see as immediate an improvement as someone who is more inclined to endurance type work but you will see an adaptation.  [17:52] Pete also asked "does HIIT help any of the  chambers of the heart more or less than others?" Not really. You will see more oxygenated blood pushed out of the heart to your muscles as a result of this type of training. [18:20] Lawson A asked "What is your opinion on Crossfit?" Gerald is against Crossfit. When he first looked into Crossfit he saw people doing exercise with poor form and being encouraged to push harder. He believes is important to practice proper form to maximize results and minimize risk of injury. [21:33] Matt R asked "How to start if you are out of shape and short on time?" It's best to not do too much too soon. In the beginning you may also scale your intensity. Perhaps you start out working at 70%, even still you will see improvement and overtime be able to increase the intensity. When you start out you may also use a 1 to 4 or 1 to 3 ratio of intensity periods to rest periods. If you are short on time, HIIT is one of the best things you can do to maximize your time and results. It's important to leave 5 to 10 minutes at the end to stretch and flush out some of the lactic acid built up during your session. [24:34] What can we expect to see at your youtube channel? Exercises, way to train the core, talks on transforming your body. Nutritional advice, how to design your own HIIT routines and more. [25:48] How can you follow Gerald?
