“He said, ‘I want you to feel like you can take over this race. And take over early.' And I was like, ‘Wait, what?!'” This girl is on fire! Courtney Frerichs is a two-time Olympian for Team USA who just returned from Tokyo as a silver medalist! Courtney, who trains with Nike's Bowerman Track Club, competed in the 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics, and made the final an exciting one when she made her move and took the lead with four laps to go. (A move she attributes both to coach Jerry Schumacher's plan and to her own quiet confidence and instinct taking over mid-race.) Courtney went into the Games as the American record holder in the 3000m steeplechase and as a world silver medalist, and just a week after returning from Tokyo, she competed at the Prefontaine Classic where she became the first American woman to go sub-9:00 in the steeplechase. On this episode, Courtney talks about the hard work she's done on her mental game leading up to this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials and, ultimately, the Olympics. She talks about what it was like being in Tokyo, gives a behind-the-scenes look at life in the athlete village (where she roomed with Team USA's 1500m runner Elle Purrier St. Pierre), and shares the mantras that helped her through it all. Let’s bring some joy and color into our week with Courtney McLeod, the designer behind Right Meets Left Interiors. Known for her beautiful and fun yet sophisticated body of work, Courtney is a true pro at using color to create joy and personality in her clients' homes. She talks with us about taking risks in business and in design, ways that we can start to incorporate more color in our design, and how to use color in small spaces. What You’ll Hear On This Episode: Trials and triumphs about new art lighting up our homes, a doctor’s visit for the pup, and great solutions for those unorganized beach towels. How Courtney’s background of business and the finance industry mixes with her artistic side to create a perfect balance of mixing creativity with the analytical. Courtney’s process at Right Meets Left Design is all about listening to her clients and interpreting their desires and dreams into what is doable for their particular situation, taste, and budget. Color doesn’t always have to be loud, but it can be just as interesting when it is soft. Having a contrast of shapes creates an interesting and engaging space, so it’s not all about going all angular or all circular. Ways we can work with color, even if it intimidates us. Also, using color in small spaces and busting the myth that you can’t use bold color in a small space. Do what feels good for you when it comes to color and pieces that you love. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, or if you aren’t able to use it in your home just yet - you will one day! The inspiration behind Courtney’s super cute designs in both New Orleans and Antiqua. Fun and imaginative ideas for kids rooms that are interactive and great to stand the test of time including a comic book mural wall. Mentioned In This Episode: Melissa McGill Ballard Cabot Hook Sherwin Williams Dynamic Blue @rightmeetsleftinteriordesign Right Meets Left Interior Design Decorating Dilemma: The tile to the ceiling is one of our favorite tricks, so we are glad you did that, and your space already has incredible bones and structure! It looks like you already have an area for counter stools in the kitchen and a really great dining area, so maybe make the center section more of a seating area and snacking area. We would recommend a tight back bench so you don’t get the squishiness when you sit on it and you can have an upright feel. Check out our banquette sofas, and one that was skirted would add some softness with a classic dining table look. For a chandelier, something smaller and undersized that looked like a little jewel would be super cool. ____________________________________________________________________ Your pieces have great lines, and we do agree that the brown feels a bit heavy. The two head chairs with chartreuse cushions would be excellent as white, making the cushions pop even more. Check out the Ballard chair options here, If you do decide to go for print, pick a print where your accent color is that smallest color in that print. You will be surprised how the solid will pair with the print.

There’s a southern accent, where Courtney Kasper comes from. She is a Sweet Home Alabama native, Florida State and Syracuse University graduate, and a Poodle person. Courtney is the current Equal Rights Heritage Center Visitor Experience Manager. She is a former associate publisher of Today’s Central New York Woman, and a journalist with work featured in Time Out New York and Dance Magazine. Courtney is a direct descendant of Revolutionary heroine Nancy Morgan Hart, otherwise known as War Woman. Destination on the Left is joined by Courtney Kasper, the Visitor Experience Manager at the Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn, New York. On our podcast, Courtney and I have an amazing conversation where she shares her approach to “being patient where you are with your place in life.” We talk about the vast amount of ways that idea ties into her current work and the state of crisis we are currently experiencing. She walks us through the process she used to create a powerful brand identity for the building she was hired to manage. She also discusses the many collaborations and creative breakthroughs that enabled her organization to successfully navigate the challenges of the pandemic. What You Will Learn in This Episode: The purpose behind the welcome center and how it ties into Courtney’s backstory The collaborative nature of the City of Auburn Historic and Cultural Sites Commission How Courtney has used creativity to help Auburn stand out from other destinations in the area How Courtney overcame the challenge of developing the welcome center’s brand identity while preserving its history Different ways that Courtney has used creativity to navigate the pandemic What it means to “be patient where you are with your place in life” and how it relates to the work Courtney is doing now The Equal Rights Heritage Center Courtney Kasper is the Visitor Experience Manager at the Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn, New York. More Than a Welcome Center The Equal Rights Heritage Center is unique because it is technically the official welcome center for the city of Auburn, New York. It is the headquarters for the City of Auburn Historic and Cultural Sites Commission, which was started to create a round table for all of the different site directors so they could create strategies to boost tourism in Auburn together. With exhibits like “Seeing Equal Rights in NYS,” however, it is so much more than a welcome center. They are trying to promote tourism, but more importantly, they are trying to tell Auburn’s story and the stories of the amazing people who made Auburn what it is today. Creating a New Brand Identity The collaboration between all of the historic and cultural sites has yielded great results for the City of Auburn. But creativity is what really helped the destination stand out from the pack. The Equal Rights Heritage Center has so many things under one roof, so Courtney had to develop a brand identity that captured the right amount of everything. Through the Market New York program, Courtney was able to work with an agency to create a powerful campaign highlighting the unique welcome center building and its equal rights exhibit. They built out content to highlight the unique backstory of the building, and they designed events to celebrate other aspects of Auburn as well. It was a difficult challenge, but Courtney was able to reinvent the welcome center’s brand while preserving its history. National Susan B. Today’s interview is with Courtney Dauwalter, an Ultrarunner, who was the first finisher in the 2017 Moab 240….yes the first, not the first woman, the first finisher. She finished in a mind blowing 58 hours, 10 hours faster than the second place finisher. She was a DNF on her first 100 mile race and has been learning about mental toughness ever since. We discuss how important it is to just stay in the moment, to relish the times when you are flying high and feeling good and not letting yourself wallow in the tougher things that happen along the way. During your training you have to learn to find those little things that ground you, whether they are quotes people have said to you, or listen to music, or whatever grounds you. Because doing math tricks you can do on a shorter race gets really hard on races like this. We discuss running #nowatchme. Courtney ran cross country and did skiing in high school and her coaches worked with her to know the feeling of how a pace feels and just running by feel. She doesn’t use a watch or try to watch her paces or hit particular paces, she listens to her body and what it is telling her is right that day. She has a plan for a run for a day but lets her feet decide whether to veer off on a trail or a road, and let her body lets her know each day and at each turn which route to take. How it is also important being ok with those down days when you are just not feeling it and cut it short. We cover her 100 mile race where she suffered vision issues and ran essentially blind the last 12 miles from what turned out to be a combination of nutrition shortages, contact lens use, and and corneal swelling from dehydration and debris. We discuss why Courtney chooses to run in baggy men’s running clothing vs technical fabrics. How she napped for 20 minutes during the earlier parts of the Moab 240 and then 1 minute around mile 200 (her pacer woke her up) and how she felt completely refreshed and rejuvenated. It was cold, and it would not have been wise to stay still for long. Have you ever hallucinated running? Courtney has and we talk about what it is like to have that happen in a race. And now her friends always ask her what she saw out there this time. Today’s Guest Courtney Dauwalter is a Colorado based Ultrarunner. She grew up with two brothers, where you compete for everything, because, well they are boys. She holds the American Woman’s 24 hour endurance run record at 155.39 miles, besting her own previous record. She is a full time science teacher What you will learn about: How Courtney just battled her battle during the 238 mile Moab 240 race and didn’t know how far she was ahead of any other runners. The thoughts of a cooler of beer got her through the last DAY of the race. Courtney discusses how she tries to reel in the person in front of her, whether it is a male or female, because most of the competition is within herself against herself. Ultramarathons are humbling because you can pass someone but eventually get passed back. How to listen to your body and run what is right on each day, running #nowatchme and finding your cruise control speed during your training. Trail running helps teach you that because you often have to power hike the uphill sections but can fly down the downhill parts. How Courtney ran the last 12 miles blind during the Run Rabbit Run 100 mile race and kept going, despite frequently falling and bashing her head because she could not see other than a small spot right at her feet. She had been pushing the pace, nutrition intake was not going well, and it was nighttime so she at first put it off as headlamp issues. We discuss hallucinating on a trail race during the night later in a race. We talk about working through physical pain and how you can keep going until you get past it until your next surge. Repeating mantras, getting to a landmark, listen to music, eat something…anything to take you out of the pain mentally for a short time until you feel better. Learn and watch from all the other amazing runners in the sport. Inspirational Quotes: I’m either completely committed to what I am doing, or have a few screws loose, who knows. If you push through the dark moments when everything hurts, you will find another reserve of strength you didn’t know you had. Know that a high is going to come again. The Bible tells of healings, miracles and the power of the Holy Spirit, but God’s power didn’t stop after the New Testament. Today’s guest Courtney Smallbone shares her personal story of God’s power in the hardest circumstances imaginable. Supernatural healing is for today. Courtney’s story of finding freedom from anxiety and miraculous healing for her infant son is a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness. As moms we have a lot of fear and anxiety. We carry a lot. We have these little people that we’re in charge of and discipling. It gets exhausting and hard. I felt like the Lord just filled me with himself. He has given me not the spirit of fear, but love and power and a sound mind. I needed a sound mind when I was dealing with anxiety. He has given us power through his Holy Spirit and we can walk that out as moms in everyday life. What we chat about: Courtney’s testimony of seeing God move in her life and health How Courtney met her husband Luke Smallbone of For King and Country The impact of Luke’s autoimmune disease on Courtney and her family Dealing with anxiety and prescription medicine dependence Getting freedom from the shame and finding healing holistically The importance of community in the healing process Why the church needs to embrace a holistic approach to healing and helping people be open about sharing their struggles Courtney’s physical issues with her most recent pregnancy The miracle of her son’s healing Teaching our kids that prayer is powerful and effective and that God is real Worshipping with your children invites them into a lifestyle of worship Hearing God for others and the gift of the praying in the spirit Links Mentioned: “All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 Lemierre’s Disease for KING & COUNTRY Compassion International Colitis Craniosynotosis “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Bethel worship “Without You” (feat. #02 Episode with Courtney Banghart Overview DEC 14, 2017 Badass Quotes: “I coach players who want to be great; they think they can be. “Fear hinders progress in every way. We have all been paralyzed by fear. Been driven by consequences versus going toward the goal.” “Comfortable is not living. Life is supposed to have edges.” “Bravery is everywhere, it’s just masked under uncertainty.” Podcast Intro: Courtney Banghart was a superstar athlete, an Ivy League grad - she went to Dartmouth and majored in Neuroscience. She had no idea or intention that she would play basketball in college much less become one the brightest coaching stars in the college game today. She is intense. She is quick and I swear she talks in sound bites, which must be the biggest part of the reason her players are so pumped to play for her. She is both down-to-earth and otherworldly, clearly in what she would call her zone of genius. She shifts the energy of the room when she walks into it and you know, this is no ordinary woman. Official Bio: Helping to guide Princeton to unprecedented heights, the 2015 Naismith National Coach of the Year, and named one of Fortune Magazine’s 50 Greatest Leaders, Courtney Banghart will be in her 11th season as head coach of the women’s basketball team in 2017-18. The winningest coach in program history, Banghart has amassed a 208-87 (0.705) overall record with a 113-27 (0.807) mark against Ivy League opponents. Welcome to Flex Your Heart Radio! This podcast is about body, fat and gender positivity, fitness, feminism, recovery, risk, and crushing it at life. On this episode, we talk to one of my personal fitness heroes, Courtney Marshall! Courtney is a former English and Women's Studies professor turned community-accountable feminist fitness instructor and personal trainer. She is a member of the Body Positive Fitness Alliance and want to open a feminist fitness facility one day. She fully expects to go broke doing this work, because her goal is almost always to give it all away for free. She can't wait to tell you why! In this podcast we discuss: - How Courtney handles people food shaming themselves or shit talking their bodies - What anti-racist, feminist fitness entails - The joy of giving her work away for free, and how free access to fitness enriches the giver just as much as the recipient and so much more!
