In this episode we WadeOutThere with Nick Teynor, from Salt Lake City, Utah. When Nick was a child his family road tripped from Maryland to Washington State for his father's job transfer.  Along the way, he was introduced to fly fishing, while watching drift boats out the car window in the Rocky Mountains.  A stop at the family's cabin in Montana sealed the deal.  He had a fly rod in his hand for the first time, and from then on it was all he wanted to pursue and learn about in the fishing world.  Nick's family later moved to Utah, where his time on the water exploded, as he was able to access water from his bike on weekends and after school.  Nick stayed in Utah, and has worked at Western Rivers Fly Fisher, in Salt Lake City, for over nineteen years as both a guide and now, primarily as an instructor.  We discuss the Provo River and seasonal tactics for soft hackle, including presentation techniques, swinging, and fly selection.  Nick also shares his thoughts on guiding versus instructing in fly fishing. Learn More: Instagram: @thepurpleroosterWesternRiversFlyFishing.comVisit TacticalFlyFisher.com and use Promo Code: wade15 at checkout for 15% off you next tactical gear purchase. Shooters will recognize it, as it is frequently allied with lead to make a harder, more durable alloy for cast bullets. We should note that lead-antimony alloys have many other uses, from lead-acid batteries to sailboat keels. Antimony is used in other alloys as well, such as antifriction alloys, electric cable sheathing, and type metals for printing presses, which apparently are not completely extinct yet. It's also used in flame retardants, and - this is key - in semiconductors. It's also has applications in pharmaceuticals.  a key strategic mineral. Alaska has antimony. Now, in Alaska, a company called Nova Minerals, with a grant from the War Department, has a contract to build an antimony refinery at Port MacKenzie, west of Anchorage, to process ore from the Estelle gold mine in the West Susitna Mineral District. With Pentagon backing and a goal to begin delivering Alaska-sourced antimony into U.S. supply chains by 2027, Nova Minerals Ltd. has secured a 42.8-acre site at Port MacKenzie west of Anchorage for a refinery that would process antimony concentrates from its Estelle project and other sources."This is a defining moment for Nova Minerals and for U.S. critical mineral independence," Nova Minerals CEO Christopher Gerteisen said upon securing land use permits for the industrial site about four miles from a deepwater port in Southcentral Alaska. The refinery, to be developed by Nova subsidiary Alaska Range Resources (ARR), is part of a strategy to leverage the very high-grade antimony mineralization found on the company's Estelle project about 100 miles west of Port MacKenzie to establish a domestic supply of this metalloid critical to a wide range of military and commercial applications. Antimony is also found in Idaho and Montana. But a majority of antimony production comes from countries that are not particularly friendly to the United States: China, Russia, and Tajikistan, which, between them, account for almost 80 percent of global supply. In the summer of 1987, three children discovered that the line between childhood games and the paranormal can disappear in an instant. Out on their grandfather's land near a rumored Native burial ground in rural Montana, the days smelled of cut hay and pine resin — but at dusk, the yard belonged to something else. It began with a toy truck that hurled itself off a shelf, striking the wall with unnatural force. Soon came the faceless black boy crouched beneath the oak tree, holding their toy in silence before vanishing into thin air. But the strangest apparition arrived at midnight: a 17-year-old girl in a faded blue dress, hair in braids, umbrella and purse in hand, standing stiff in the upstairs hallway — staring past them as though trapped in another time. The house's doorbell rang on its own, voices whispered in the backyard when no one was there, and a massive black hand once gripped the doorframe as if trying to pull itself inside. This chilling true ghost story isn't about creaky floors — it's about the way childhood wonder collides with the unseen. Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

402 Freedom in Healing Throughout life we may make decisions, or be subject to decisions made involving us. Whether it's first or second hand, inevitably we begin to believe in a pattern in the behavior around us, oftentimes leading to self doubt and worse. However, if we keep moving forward, actively choosing to make the best of a situation, to learn and grow in order to better ourselves for ourselves, we will find our freedom in healing.   In today's episode, Sarah Elkins and Holli Tabren McEachern discuss the importance of growth, healing, and the honesty that comes with self reflection. Honesty not just with the world, but with yourself and what has happened to make you feel the way you do, and how it triggers you.    Highlights Empathy in a world of cruelty is the bravest rebellion.  How have you been programmed?  Have you ever encountered favoritism?  What choices are you making that reflect your behavior? Do you feel like you have to justify these choices?   Quotes “I think it's because we look at society, and we look at the grandma with the grandkids and the grandma always spoils the grandkids. You have this program, like your program, program from the way things are. Program from the way everybody does things.”    “And God, he prepares you for what's next. You don't know it's preparation. You don't realize that all these things that happen in your life, even the bad choices you make, will prepare you for the next thing.”  “You have to change you before anything in the situation can change.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Where are you incarcerated? What are you choosing not to see in your own decisions? That maybe with a little light on them can help you find more satisfaction and happiness in your life. It's a simple question, but the answer might be tricky. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Holli Holli Tabren is an author, speaker, mentor, and reentry specialist dedicated to helping women rebuild their lives and reclaim their power after incarceration. Once sentenced to 25 years in prison, she served 10 years before her case was overturned transforming her pain into purpose. Holli now leads the Becoming HER Framework—Healed, Extraordinary, Resilient—through workshops, books, and her soon-to-launch app, equipping justice-impacted women with tools for healing, entrepreneurship, and resilience. She is the author of Blood Ain't Thicker, The Path2Redemption Anthology, and her newest release, Becoming HER. Featured on national stages and news outlets, Holli shares her story of transformation as living proof that freedom isn't just about release; it's about rebuilding. Be sure to check out her LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram! And be sure to check out her website Holli Tabren!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. The wind on the Montana prairie always sounded haunted, but for Jessica, the real nightmare began at age ten — the night a plastic toy hurled itself off a shelf and shattered against the wall. That was just the first sign of a true haunting that would shadow her for decades. In the old farmhouse near a Native burial ground, knives slid off tables, doors slammed on their own, and at twelve she woke to invisible hands choking her — red finger-marks burned into her skin by morning. At sixteen, she dreamed of being branded by a Devil-like figure, and woke with a blazing handprint on her chest that lasted for days. Night after night, the basement echoed with the scrape of unseen shovels across concrete. Jessica saw a shadow figure step out of her closet, and later watched a black, shapeless smear bloom across the ceiling before vanishing. Most chilling of all was the slow creak of a phantom door — in a home that had only one real door. From Montana to Michigan, something unseen seemed determined to follow her… or had always been with her. We are about to drop some wisdom today! It's amazing how much you learn over two and half decades of life. For today's episode, I was reflecting on 25-years in the brick & mortar space and the many lessons I've learned in the fitness, coaching, sports, and business world and woah…I came up with a lot. These lessons are hard-fought, soul-earned wisdom that life, business, and faith have taught me over a quarter century in the trenches. Today, I'm sharing 10 of my 25+ lessons learned over 25 years. Some will hit quick and sharp. Others will go deep. But each one is designed to help you reflect, refocus, and reignite as you write your own next chapter. I'm hoping at least 1, 2, or 3 of these really resonate deeply with you and where you are at in your journey of life. Let's dive into my first 10-Lessons (and some of the crazy stories) I want to share with you on today's episode: LESSON #1: YOU GOTTA START. LESSON #2: BE THE MOST POSITIVE PERSON YOU KNOW. LESSON #3: LOSSES REMIND YOU OF THE FRAGILITY OF LIFE. LESSON #4: IF THERE'S A FORK IN THE ROAD, TAKE IT. LESSON #5: WHEN YOU'RE MAKING FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS, YOUR REVENUES ARE OFTEN HALF OF WHAT YOU PROJECT…AND YOUR EXPENSES ARE OFTEN DOUBLE. LESSON #6: DREAM BIG, START SMALL, AND WORK YOUR BUTT OFF. LESSON #7: TAKE RISKS, DON'T BE AFRAID TO FAIL, AND USE FEAR AS FUEL. LESSON #8: WALKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MESS IS UNCOMFORTABLE. LESSON #9: THERE IS NOTHING LIKE LIVE EVENTS. LESSON #10: PRIORITIZE FAMILY. These are the first 10 of my 25+ lessons in 25 years. Which one hit you the hardest? Which one speaks to your soul right now? Which one resonated deepest? Screenshot it, share it on your social media, and tag me — I want to know what lesson is driving your next chapter. Also, if this episode spoke to you, please share it forward. Send it to a friend, teammate, colleague, or fellow leader who's writing their own next chapter and needs some encouragement today. Or post it to your story, tag me, and let's celebrate the growth together. Today's episode is part of our Christian parenting mini-series we are offering on “Motherhood Taboos” and we are tackling a big taboo of finding out you're pregnant ... and you weren't planning to be. Our guests are both priests who found themselves unexpectedly pregnant and want to narrate the grief and the joy, the surprise and the wonder, and the challenge and hope of a blessing that can leave you limping from a worldview that supports women's autonomy, choice, and freedom. MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS:Rev. Mia Kano is an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Massachusetts, where she serves as the part-time Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ayer. She lives in Acton, Massachusetts with her husband and two children. Rev. Mia's childhood was shaped by both Catholic and Congregationalist churches. She found her way to the Episcopal Church in her early twenties after exploring secular humanism and Islam. She was ordained as a priest in January 2020. Rev. Reagan Gonzalez was born in Odessa, Texas and raised in Bozeman, Montana. She grew up attending St. James Episcopal Church in Bozeman and later served as its Youth Director and Christian Formation Director before attending seminary. She is a graduate of Montana State University with a degree in Microbiology. After college, Reagan spent a year living in intentional community during a year of service with the Episcopal Service Corps. This experience deepened her faith and confirmed a desire to formally discern a call to ordained ministry. She earned an MDiv from the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas and was ordained to the priesthood in 2018. Reagan has a passion for community life that is grounded in inclusivity. She loves to preach, teach, tell Godly Play stories to children, and introduce people to an open-minded Christianity where questions are welcomed, and where we trust that we learn best by struggling together to hear where the Holy Spirit is calling. Reagan is married to Bryan, they have two children, and one on the way. +++Like what you hear? Welcome to another episode of the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast! In this inspiring episode, Dr. Sarah Smith sits down with Dr. David Park—a family physician, medical educator, executive coach, and true leadership enthusiast. Dr. Park shares his incredible journey, from immigrating to the U.S. from South Korea, to his early days as core faculty in New York, through pioneering roles as a founding dean in new medical schools across Nevada, Utah, and Montana. Together, they dive into the realities of building a meaningful, sustainable medical career while juggling clinical practice, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Dr. Park opens up about the personal lessons he's learned—including the importance of taking care of your own well-being, strategies for time management, and why effective delegation can empower both you and your team. He also discusses the value of faculty development, executive coaching, and how reconnecting with your purpose can fuel longevity and joy in medicine. If you're a clinician looking to craft a career path that honors your ambition while making room for balance, this episode is packed with wisdom you can put into action. Let's dive in! Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: Prioritize Self-Care Alongside Career Growth: No role is sustainable if it comes at the expense of your mental, physical, or spiritual health. Carve out time for rest, exercise, and reflection—even in the busiest phases of your career. Delegation and Teamwork Drive Sustainability: Great leaders delegate effectively, leaning on the strengths and passions of their teams. Not only does this elevate others, but it keeps your own workload manageable and fosters a culture of shared success. Invest in Lifelong Growth and Development: Never stop learning. Whether through executive coaching, public speaking courses, or leadership workshops, continued personal and professional development empowers you and those you mentor. Meet Dr. David Park: Dr. David Park is a dual board-certified family physician, medical educator, and nationally recognized leader in medicine. He has served in numerous leadership roles including medical school dean, residency program director, and president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Park has served on boards of various medical organizations at the local, state, and nation levels. He is passionate about leadership development, health and wellness, and developing the next generation of physician leaders. He is also an executive coach and his mission is to cultivate leaders by inspiring purpose, building confidence, and developing action-oriented leadership skills with the ultimate goal of creating a legacy of leadership. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado is legendary for its hauntings — and one visitor's chilling experience proves why it's one of America's most haunted destinations. While waiting on a bench near the grand staircase, a guest's daughter snapped two quick cell phone photos. The first photo shows a shadow-like mass partially covering the guest's legs. In the second shot, taken seconds later, the shadow had shifted — now standing beside them in the clear shape of a human figure. But this wasn't their first haunted hotel encounter. Seventeen years earlier, while staying in one of the famously haunted rooms of a historic Montana hotel, the same person awoke to a young woman ghost pulling down their blankets and shaking the bed, trying to get their attention. On another trip, while sleeping in a Las Vegas hotel, they awoke to see a woman levitating at the end of their bed, dressed in early-1900s clothing with a hat and long coat. She vanished the moment the light switched on. These terrifying experiences prove that sometimes the spirits of historic hotels don't just linger in legends — they reveal themselves. #StanleyHotelGhost #TrueGhostStory #RealHaunting #HauntedHotel #GhostPhoto #HauntedMontana #VegasHaunting #LevitatingGhost #HauntedTunnels #ParanormalEvidence #HauntedRockies #GhostCaughtOnCamera Love real ghost stories? I'll often use these terms interchangeably to avoid repetition, but they describe two very different things. The main distinction: ski areas rise directly from parking lots edged by a handful of bunched utilitarian structures, while ski resorts push parking lots into the next zipcode to accommodate slopeside lodging and commerce. There are a lot more ski areas than ski resorts, and a handful of the latter present like the former, with accommodations slightly off-hill (Sun Valley) or anchored in a near-enough town (Bachelor). But mostly the distinction is clear, with the defining question being this: is this a mountain that people will travel around the world to ski, or one they won't travel more than an hour to ski?Arapahoe Basin occupies a strange middle. Nothing in the mountain's statistical profile suggests that it should be anything other than a Summit County locals hang. It is the 16th-largest ski area in Colorado by skiable acres, the 18th-tallest by lift-served vertical drop, and the eighth-snowiest by average annual snowfall. The mountain runs just six chairlifts and only two detachables. Beginner terrain is limited. A-Basin has no base area lodging, and in fact not much of a base area at all. Altitude, already an issue for the Colorado ski tourist, is amplified here, where the lifts spin from nearly 11,000 feet. A-Basin should, like Bridger Bowl in Montana (upstream from Big Sky) or Red River in New Mexico (across the mountain from Taos) or Sunlight in Colorado (parked between Aspen and I-70), be mostly unknown beside its heralded big-name neighbors (Keystone, Breck, Copper). And it sort of is, but also sort of isn't. Like tiny (826-acre) Aspen Mountain, A-Basin transcends its statistical profile. Skiers know it, seek it, travel for it, cross it off their lists like a snowy Eiffel Tower. Unlike Aspen, A-Basin has no posse of support mountains, no grided downtown spilling off the lifts, no Kleenex-level brand that stands in for skiing among non-skiers. And yet Vail tried buying the bump in 1997, and Alterra finally did in 2024. Meanwhile, nearby Loveland, bigger, taller, snowier, higher, easier to access with its trip-off-the-interstate parking lots, is still ignored by tourists and conglomerates alike.Weird. What explains A-Basin's pull? Onetime and future Storm guest Jackson Hogen offers, in his Snowbird Secrets book, an anthropomorphic explanation for that Utah powder dump's aura: As it turns out, everyone has a story for how they came to discover Snowbird, but no one knows the reason. Some have the vanity to think they picked the place, but the wisest know the place picked them. That is the secret that Snowbird has slipped into our subconscious; deep down, we know we were summoned here. We just have to be reminded of it to remember, an echo of the Platonic notion that all knowledge is remembrance. In the modern world we are so divorced from our natural selves that you would think we'd have lost the power to hear a mountain call us. And indeed we have, but such is the enormous reach of this place that it can still stir the last seed within us that connects us to the energy that surrounds us every day yet we do not see. The resonance of that tiny, vibrating seed is what brings us here, to this extraordinary place, to stand in the heart of the energy flow.Yeah I don't know, Man. We're drifting into horoscope territory here. But I also can't explain why we all like to do This Dumb Thing so much that we'll wrap our whole lives around it. So if there is some universe force, what Hogen calls “vibrations” from Hidden Peak's quartz, drawing skiers to Snowbird, could there also be some proton-kryptonite-laserbeam s**t sucking us all toward A-Basin? If there's a better explanation, I haven't found it.What we talked aboutThe Beach; keeping A-Basin's whole ski footprint open into May; Alterra buys the bump – “we really liked the way Alterra was doing things… and letting the resorts retain their identity”; the legacy of former owner Dream; how hardcore, no-frills ski area A-Basin fits into an Alterra portfolio that includes high-end resorts such as Deer Valley and Steamboat; “you'd be surprised how many people from out of state ski here too”; Ikon as Colorado sampler pack (or not); local reaction to Alterra's purchase – “I think it's fair that there was anxiety”; balancing the wild ski cycle of over-the-top peak days and soft periods; parking reservations; going unlimited on the full Ikon Pass and how parking reservations play in – “we spent a ridiculous amount of time talking about it”; the huge price difference between Epic and Ikon and how that factors into the access calculus; why A-Basin still sells a single-mountain season pass; whether reciprocal partnerships with Monarch and Silverton will remain in place; “I've been amazed at how few things I've been told to do” by Alterra; A-Basin's dirt-cheap early-season pass; why early season is “a more competitive time” than it used to be; why A-Basin left Mountain Collective; Justice Department anti-trust concerns around Alterra's A-Basin purchase – “it never was clear to me what the concerns were”; breaking down A-Basin's latest U.S. Forest Service masterplan – “everything in there, we hope to do”; a parking lot pulse gondola and why that makes sense over shuttles; why A-Basin plans a two-lift system of beginner machines; why should A-Basin care about beginner terrain?; is beginner development is related to Ikon Pass membership?; what it means that the MDP designs for 700 more skiers per day; assessing the Lenawee Express sixer three seasons in; why A-Basin sold the old Lenawee lift to independent Sunlight, Colorado; A-Basin's patrol unionizing; and 100 percent renewable energy. What I got wrong* I said that A-Basin was the only mountain that had been caught up in antitrust issues, but that's inaccurate: when S-K-I and LBO Enterprises merged into American Skiing Company in 1996, the U.S. Justice Department compelled the combined company to sell Cranmore and Waterville Valley, both in New Hampshire. Waterville Valley remains independent. Cranmore stayed independent for a while, and has since 2010 been owned by Fairbank Group, which also owns Jiminy Peak in Massachusetts and operates Bromley, Vermont.* I said that A-Basin's $259 early-season pass, good for unlimited access from opening day through Dec. 25, “was like one day at Vail,” which is sort of true and sort of not. Vail Mountain's day-of lift ticket will hit $230 from Nov. 14 to Dec. 11, then increase to $307 or $335 every day through Christmas. All Resorts Epic Day passes, which would get skiers on the hill for any of those dates, currently sell for between $106 and $128 per day. Unlimited access to Vail Mountain for that full early-season period would require a full Epic Pass, currently priced at $1,121.* This doesn't contradict anything we discussed, but it's worth noting some parking reservations changes that A-Basin implemented following our conversation. Reservations will now be required on weekends only, and from Jan. 3 to May 3, a reduction from 48 dates last winter to 36 for this season. The mountain will also allow skiers to hold four reservations at once, doubling last year's limit of two.Why now was a good time for this interviewOne of the most striking attributes of modern lift-served skiing is how radically different each ski area is. Panic over corporate hegemony power-stamping each child mountain into snowy McDonald's clones rarely survives past the parking lot. Underscoring the point is neighboring ski areas, all over America, that despite the mutually intelligible languages of trail ratings and patrol uniforms and lift and snowgun furniture, and despite sharing weather patterns and geologic origins and local skier pools, feel whole-cut from different eras, cultures, and imaginations. The gates between Alta and Snowbird present like connector doors between adjoining hotel rooms but actualize as cross-dimensional Mario warpzones. The 2.4-mile gondola strung between the Alpine Meadows and Olympic sides of Palisades Tahoe may as well connect a baseball stadium with an opera house. Crossing the half mile or so between the summits of Sterling at Smugglers' Notch and Spruce Peak at Stowe is a journey of 15 minutes and five decades. And Arapahoe Basin, elder brother of next-door Keystone, resembles its larger neighbor like a bat resembles a giraffe: both mammals, but of entirely different sorts. Same with Sugarbush and Mad River Glen, Vermont; Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, and Boreal, California; Park City and Deer Valley, Utah; Killington and Pico, Vermont; Highlands and Nub's Nob, Michigan; Canaan Valley and Timberline and Nordic-hybrid White Grass, West Virginia; Aspen's four Colorado ski areas; the three ski areas sprawling across Mt. Hood's south flank; and Alpental and its clump of Snoqualmie sisters across the Washington interstate. Proximity does not equal sameness. One of The Storm's preoccupations is with why this is so. For all their call-to-nature appeal, ski areas are profoundly human creations, more city park than wildlife preserve. They are sculpted, managed, manicured. Even the wildest-feeling among them – Mount Bohemia, Silverton, Mad River Glen – are obsessively tended to, ragged by design.A-Basin pulls an even neater trick: a brand curated for rugged appeal, scaffolded by brand-new high-speed lifts and a self-described “luxurious European-style bistro.” That the Alterra Mountain Company-owned, megapass pioneer floating in the busiest ski county in the busiest ski state in America managed to retain its rowdy rap even as the onetime fleet of bar-free double chairs toppled into the recycling bin is a triumph of branding. But also a triumph of heart. A-Basin as Colorado's Alta or Taos or Palisades is a title easily ceded to Telluride or Aspen Highlands, similarly tilted high-alpiners. But here it is, right beside buffed-out Keystone, a misunderstood mountain with its own wild side but a fair-enough rap as an approachable landing zone for first-time Rocky Mountain explorers westbound out of New York or Ohio. Why are A-Basin and Keystone so different? The blunt drama of A-Basin's hike-in terrain helps, but it's more enforcer than explainer. The real difference, I believe, is grounded in the conductor orchestrating this mad dance.Since Henceroth sat down in the COO chair 20 years ago, Keystone has had nine president-general manager equivalents. A-Basin was already 61 years old in 2005, giving it a nice branding headstart on younger Keystone, born in 1970. But both had spent nearly two decades, from 1978 to 1997, co-owned by a dogfood conglomerate that often marketed them as one resort, and the pair stayed glued together on a multimountain pass for a couple of decades afterward.Henceroth, with support and guidance from the real-estate giant that owned A-Basin in the Ralston-Purina-to-Alterra interim, had a series of choices to make. A-Basin had only recently installed snowmaking. There was no lift access to Zuma Bowl, no Beavers. The lift system consisted of three double chairs and two triples. Did this aesthetic minimalism and pseudo-independence define A-Basin? Or did the mountain, shaped by the generations of leaders before Henceroth, hold some intangible energy and pull, that thing we recognize as atmosphere, culture, vibe? Would The Legend lose its duct-taped edge if it:* Expanded 400 mostly low-angle acres into Zuma Bowl (2007)* Joined Vail Resorts' Epic Pass (2009)* Installed the mountain's first high-speed lift (Black Mountain Express in 2010)* Expand 339 additional acres into the Beavers (2018), and service that terrain with an atypical-for-Colorado 1,501-vertical-foot fixed-grip lift* Exit the Epic Pass following the 2018-19 ski season* Immediately join Mountain Collective and Ikon as a multimountain replacement (2019)* Ditch a 21-year-old triple chair for the mountain's first high-speed six-pack (2022)* Sell to Alterra Mountain Company (2024)* Require paid parking reservations on high-volume days (2024)* Go unlimited on the Ikon Pass and exit Mountain Collective (2025)* Release an updated USFS masterplan that focuses largely on the novice ski experience (2025)That's a lot of change. A skier booted through time from Y2K to October 2025 would examine that list and conclude that Rad Basin had been tamed. But ski a dozen laps and they'd say well not really. Those multimillion upgrades were leashed by something priceless, something human, something that kept them from defining what the mountain is. There's some indecipherable alchemy here, a thing maybe not quite as durable as the mountain itself, but rooted deeper than the lift towers strung along it. It takes a skilled chemist to cook this recipe, and while they'll never reveal every secret, you can visit the restaurant as many times as you'd like. Why you should ski Arapahoe BasinWe could do a million but here are nine:1) $: Two months of early-season skiing costs roughly the same as A-Basin's neighbors charge for a single day. A-Basin's $259 fall pass is unlimited from opening day through Dec. 25, cheaper than a Dec. 20 day-of lift ticket at Breck ($281), Vail ($335), Beaver Creek ($335), or Copper ($274), and not much more than Keystone ($243). 2) Pali: When A-Basin tore down the 1,329-vertical-foot, 3,520-foot-long Pallavicini double chair, a 1978 Yan, in 2020, they replaced it with a 1,325-vertical-foot, 3,512-foot-long Leitner-Poma double chair. It's one of just a handful of new doubles installed in America over the past decade, underscoring a rare-in-modern-skiing commitment to atmosphere, experience, and snow preservation over uphill capacity. 3) The newest lift fleet in the West: The oldest of A-Basin's six chairlifts, Zuma, arrived brand-new in 2007.4) Wall-to-wall: when I flew into Colorado for a May 2025 wind-down, five ski areas remained open. Despite solid snowpack, Copper, Breck, and Winter Park all spun a handful of lifts on a constrained footprint. But A-Basin and Loveland still ran every lift, even over the Monday-to-Thursday timeframe of my visit.5) The East Wall: It's like this whole extra ski area. Not my deal as even skiing downhill at 12,500 feet hurts, but some of you like this s**t:6) May pow: I mean yeah I did kinda just get lucky but damn these were some of the best turns I found all year (skiing with A-Basin Communications Manager Shayna Silverman):7) The Beach: the best ski area tailgate in North America (sorry, no pet dragons allowed - don't shoot the messenger):8) The Beavers: Just glades and glades and glades (a little crunchy on this run, but better higher up and the following day):9) It's a ski area first: In a county of ski resorts, A-Basin is a parking-lots-at-the-bottom-and-not-much-else ski area. It's spare, sparse, high, steep, and largely exposed. Skiers are better at self-selecting than we suppose, meaning the ability level of the average A-Basin skier is more Cottonwoods than Connecticut. That impacts your day in everything from how the liftlines flow to how the bumps form to how many zigzaggers you have to dodge on the down.Podcast NotesOn the dates of my visit We reference my last A-Basin visit quite a bit – for context, I skied there May 6 and 7, 2025. Both nice late-season pow days.On A-Basin's long seasonsIt's surprisingly difficult to find accurate open and close date information for most ski areas, especially before 2010 or so, but here's what I could cobble together for A-Basin - please let me know if you have a more extensive list, or if any of this is wrong:On A-Basin's ownership timelineArapahoe Basin probably gets too much credit for being some rugged indie. Ralston-Purina, then-owners of Keystone, purchased A-Basin in 1978, then added Breckenridge to the group in 1993 before selling the whole picnic basket to Vail in 1997. The U.S. Justice Department wouldn't let the Eagle County operator have all three, so Vail flipped Arapahoe to a Canadian real estate empire, then called Dundee, some months later. That company, which at some point re-named itself Dream, pumped a zillion dollars into the mountain before handing it off to Alterra last year.On A-Basin leaving Epic PassA-Basin self-ejected from Epic Pass in 2019, just after Vail maxed out Colorado by purchasing Crested Butte and before they fully invaded the East with the Peak Resorts purchase. Arapahoe Basin promptly joined Mountain Collective and Ikon, swapping unlimited-access on four varieties of Epic Pass for limited-days products. Henceroth and I talked this one out during our 2022 pod, and it's a fascinating case study in building a better business by decreasing volume. On the price difference between Ikon and Epic with A-Basin accessConcerns about A-Basin hurdling back toward the overcrowded Epic days by switching to Ikon's unlimited tier tend to overlook this crucial distinction: Vail sold a 2018-19 version of the Epic Pass that included unlimited access to Keystone and A-Basin for an early-bird rate of $349. The full 2025-26 Ikon Pass debuted at nearly four times that, retailing for $1,329, and just ramped up to $1,519.On Alterra mountains with their own season passesWhile all Alterra-owned ski areas (with the exception of Deer Valley), are unlimited on the full Ikon Pass and nine are unlimited with no blackouts on Ikon Base, seven of those sell their own unlimited season pass that costs less than Base. The sole unlimited season pass for Crystal, Mammoth, Palisades Tahoe, Steamboat, Stratton, and Sugarbush is a full Ikon Pass, and the least-expensive unlimited season pass for Solitude is the Ikon Base. Deer Valley leads the nation with its $4,100 unlimited season pass. See the Alterra chart at the top of this article for current season pass prices to all of the company's mountains. On A-Basin and Schweitzer pass partnershipsAlterra has been pretty good about permitting its owned ski areas to retain historic reciprocal partners on their single-mountain season passes. For A-Basin, this means three no-blackout days at Monarch and two unguided days at Silverton. Up at Schweitzer, passholders get three midweek days each at Whitewater, Mt. Hood Meadows, Castle Mountain, Loveland, and Whitefish. None of these ski areas are on Ikon Pass, and the benefit is only stapled to A-Basin- or Schweitzer-specific season passes. On the Mountain Collective eventI talk about Mountain Collective as skiing's most exclusive country club. Nothing better demonstrates that characterization than this podcast I recorded at the event last fall, when in around 90 minutes I had conversations with the top leaders of Boyne Resorts, Snowbird, Aspen, Jackson Hole, Sun Valley, Snowbasin, Grand Targhee, and many more.On Mountain Collective and Ikon overlapThe Mountain Collective-Ikon overlap is kinda nutso:On Pennsylvania skiingIn regards to the U.S. Justice Department grilling Alterra on its A-Basin acquisition, it's still pretty stupid that the agency allowed Vail Resorts to purchase eight of the 19 public chairlift-served ski areas in Pennsylvania without a whisper of protest. These eight ski areas almost certainly account for more than half of all skier visits in a state that typically ranks sixth nationally for attendance. Last winter, the state's 2.6 million skier visits accounted for more days than vaunted ski states New Hampshire (2.4 million), Washington (2.3), Montana (2.2), Idaho (2.1). or Oregon (2.0). Only New York (3.4), Vermont (4.2), Utah (6.5), California (6.6), and Colorado (13.9) racked up more.On A-Basin's USFS masterplanNothing on the scale of Zuma or Beavers inbound, but the proposed changes would tap novice terrain that has always existed but never offered a good access point for beginners:On pulse gondolasA-Basin's proposed pulse gondola, should it be built, would be just the sixth such lift in America, joining machines at Taos, Northstar, Steamboat, Park City, and Snowmass. Loon plans to build a pulse gondola in 2026.On mid-mountain beginner centersBig bad ski resorts have attempted to amp up family appeal in recent years with gondola-serviced mid-mountain beginner centers, which open gentle, previously hard-to-access terrain to beginners. This was the purpose of mid-stations off Jackson Hole's Sweetwater Gondola and Big Sky's new-for-this-year Explorer Gondola. A-Basin's gondy (not the parking lot pulse gondola, but the one terminating at Sawmill Flats in the masterplan image above), would provide up and down lift access allowing greenies to lap the new detach quad above it.The Storm explores the world of lift-served skiing year-round. #244: Montana farmer and author Bob Quinn believes the cure for chronic disease begins in the soil. His research comparing ancient and modern wheat varieties has led him to found his own 600 acre institute in the middle of his organic grain farm. Here Bob catches up with Dave to share an update on his White House meeting with Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Secretary of Health RFK Jr and about rethinking agriculture as public health. https://realorganicproject.org/bob-quinn-healing-earth-food-as-medicine-244The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Learn how to start using AI fear-free with beginner-friendly tools, simple tasks like meal planning, and trusted platforms to get you started. Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn't just for tech experts, coders, or Silicon Valley. In fact, AI is already helping everyday people solve everyday problems—and you can start using it right now, even if you're a complete beginner. If you've been feeling hesitant or even afraid of AI, you're not alone. But the truth is, learning how to use AI doesn't have to be intimidating. With the right mindset and a few simple tools, you can start making your life easier today. Why Are People Afraid of AI? Many people fear AI because of myths and misunderstandings—like the idea that it's going to take over jobs or turn into science fiction-level robots. In reality, AI is more like a helpful assistant. Think of it as a calculator for your brain—only smarter, faster, and more versatile. The key is learning how to work with AI, not against it. Beginner-Friendly AI Use: Meal Planning & Fridge Rescue Let's start with something simple and familiar: food. AI can take the stress out of cooking and shopping with easy tools that help you: 1. Plan Your Weekly Meals Instead of scrolling endlessly for recipe ideas, you can ask AI to: Create a weekly dinner plan based on your dietary needs (gluten-free, keto, vegetarian, etc.) Generate a shopping list based on your meal plan Suggest quick recipes for busy nights Try This Prompt: "Can you create a 5-day dinner meal plan for two adults, under $75, that includes leftovers for lunch?" 2. Use What's in the Fridge Don't throw away food just because you don't know what to do with it. AI can suggest creative, safe, and delicious ways to use ingredients before they expire. Try This Prompt: "I have eggs, wilting spinach, a half-used onion, and some shredded cheese. What can I cook tonight?" You'll be surprised how helpful and creative AI can be! Tips & Tricks to Start Using AI Fear-Free Here's how to dip your toes into the AI pool without diving headfirst: 1. Start With Low-Risk, Everyday Tasks AI is great for: Making grocery lists Writing polite emails Summarizing long articles Brainstorming gift ideas Budget planning The more you use it for small tasks, the more confident you'll feel. 2. Use Clear, Friendly Prompts Don't overthink it—talk to AI like a helpful assistant or a friend. Instead of: "Build me a machine learning model to predict market trends" Try: "Can you explain what inflation is in simple terms?" Safe AI Tools & Websites for Beginners Tool What It Does Why It's Good for Beginners ChatGPT (OpenAI) Answers questions, helps plan, write, learn Very conversational and user-friendly Google Gemini  Similar to ChatGPT, connected to live web Great for real-time info   Pro Tip: Always double-check anything AI gives you—especially when it comes to food safety, finances, or health. Think of AI like a smartphone app: it's here to make your life easier, not harder. Starting small—with simple things like meal planning or organizing your week—can build your confidence and save you time. You don't need to become an AI expert overnight. You just need curiosity, a willingness to try, and a safe place to start.   Tragedy in the Ozarks: Bear Attack Confirmed Authorities have confirmed that a black bear was responsible for the tragic death of a camper in Newton County, Arkansas. 60-year-old Max Thomas of Springfield, Missouri, was camping alone at Sam's Throne Campground in the Ozark National Forest late last week. Thomas had been sleeping on an open-air cot—completely exposed—when he was attacked overnight. Family members grew concerned after not hearing from him for several days. Before communication stopped, Thomas had sent them a photo of a black bear lurking near his campsite. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission initially suspected a bear due to the nature of his injuries and signs at the scene. Now, it's confirmed. Using Thomas's photo and trail cameras set up after the incident, officials tracked down and euthanized the bear believed to be responsible. It's a rare and tragic reminder of the risks of camping in bear country—especially without proper protection. This marks the 2nd Missouri fatal bear attack in a month after 25 years without any. Wilderness According to Outdoor Life, an elk hunter in southeastern British Columbia is lucky to be alive after a serious encounter with a grizzly bear near Fort Steele last Thursday. Authorities say the man, whose name hasn't been released, was critically injured after a sow grizzly—believed to be protecting her cubs—attacked him. The hunter had been using elk calls, which officials believe may have unintentionally drawn the bear family to his location. The man reportedly got off one shot during the attack, but it's unclear if the bear was hit. Due to the severity of his injuries, officials haven't been able to speak with him yet. He was airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital, where he is now listed in stable condition. Conservation officers used thermal drones and helicopters to search the area but found no sign of the bear afterward. The investigation is ongoing, with help from predator attack specialists and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The town of Fort Steele lies approximately 60 miles north of the Canadian border, and not far from the town of Whitefish and nearby Glacier National Park in northwest Montana. Officials say elk season is currently in full swing in the region—reminding hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to stay alert in grizzly country. Riders like Tup Forge, who flew in from Australia and won gold at Cheyenne Frontier Days on just three hours of sleep, are proving that this sport isn't just for the boys. It's been less than a decade since women were welcomed back into rough stock competitions after nearly 90 years of exclusion, originally sparked by a tragic accident in 1929. But these modern cowgirls aren't just here for show — they're serious athletes competing in one of the most dangerous events out there. They ride what they rope in — using ranch saddles instead of the typical rodeo gear — and often spend more than they win. Yet despite the bruises and empty pockets, they keep showing up. Why? Because they love it. So next time you see a woman riding high on a bucking bronc, remember: she's not just breaking barriers — she's making history. These little homes offered all the amenities of home! Between the miles and miles of hikes to such places as the 7 Sacred Pools to then continuing up the mountain to caves in which we of course explored to then hiking to Devils Bridge.... To say the least, the trip was amazing on all levels!!   The cover photo for this episode is us sitting atop Devils Bridge, a hike few have the chance to take and do recommend!  Photo L to R: Mardee Reich, Kaydee Reich, Rebecca 'BEC' Wanner, Destinee Jensen   Remember: Take The Time, Make The Memories!!!   OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! Inside a Wild 2025 Land Market: Auctions, Grassland Strength, and Where Smart Buyers Win

Land headlines may say “wild,” but the on-the-ground story is sharper: focused buyers, resilient prices on the right tracts, and real opportunity in mixed-use and grassland parcels. We unpack the three pillars driving value—farm profitability, interest rates, and safety nets—then dig into why “land is local” still explains so much of what clears at auction. Attendance may be thinner than last year, yet prime quarters near existing operations continue to command strength, especially where soils, access, and water line up.We also trace the season's format shift. Lakota's live room popped, Devils Lake went heavy online, and harvest convenience kept producers bidding from the cab. You'll hear when we choose live high-bidder's choice versus timed online, how buyer profiles influence results, and why clear parceling, fencing status, water sources, and drone footage help sellers earn trust and bidders move fast. On the ground, grassland remains a bright spot as livestock values hold firm across western North Dakota and eastern Montana—where contiguous pasture, reliable water, strong fences, and maintained roads are the real currency. Then we map the fall slate: Jamestown's multi-parcel cropland, Emmons County's contiguous grass, western ND pheasant-country tracts, and a standout 1,763-acre Cass County offering stretching Castleton to Wheatland. High PI soils and development shadow along Highways 10 and 18 create long-hold optionality, while additional parcels sit near the ethanol plant and along the interstate for future flexibility. Add a 2,500-acre Slope–Bowman package with river-bottom trees on Little Beaver Creek, and recreational and grazing value intersect in rare ways.Looking to engage, learn, or bid? Intrigued by the boy's curiosity and appalled that he's never fished, Chief teaches Henry the art of fly casting with rhythmic hand claps and patient guidance. Soon, they share euphoric mornings on the lake, anchoring near a gnarled underwater branch where the scent of bedding bluegill fills the air. Henry's first catch—a shimmering bluegill—hooks him forever, and they fish together for years, forging a bond like father and son. Years later, after college, Henry returns home eager to reunite with Chief, only to learn he's confined to a nursing home. Spotting the frail man gazing longingly at a pond, Henry shares tales of Montana trout fishing, evoking Chief's youthful spirit. When Chief wistfully admits his dying wish is to fish with "his boy" again, Henry hatches a daring plan. Feigning a simple outing, he wheels Chief to the car, and they escape to Chief's overgrown property, adrenaline surging like a prison breakout. Dust-covered treasures await in the barn: fly rods Chief had saved for this very hope. Rigging the canoe and Chief's favorite popping bug, they glide to the familiar spot. As Chief inhales the musty bluegill scent and casts with trembling hands, landing a fish that bends his rod, time reverses. Pride and joy light his face, fulfilling a promise sealed in a framed photo labeled "For Henry," their final cast a triumphant echo of shared beginnings.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

The Home Invader: A 30-Year Fly Fishing LegacyIn this episode of The Butcher Shop, host Marvin Cash dives deep into one of fly fishing's most versatile streamer patterns with its creator, Doug McKnight. Calling in from Blacksmith Lodge in Punta Herrero, Mexico, Doug shares the complete story behind the Home Invader—from its origins on Pennsylvania spring creeks to its evolution into a deadly pattern for everything from Yellowstone brown trout to backcountry tarpon.Doug McKnight's Streamer ExpertiseDoug McKnight brings three decades of streamer innovation to this fly fishing podcast, with patterns proven across multiple species and water types. Based in Livingston, Montana, Doug guides on the Yellowstone River and has adapted his signature patterns for both freshwater predators and saltwater gamefish. His design philosophy draws from legends Bob Clouser and Bob Popovics, emphasizing natural movement and practical fishability. What You'll Learn: Home Invader FundamentalsListeners gain insider knowledge on the Home Invader's creation story, including the accidental discovery that combined pheasant marabou, Australian possum fur and Clouser-style lead eyes into a deadly baitfish imitation. Doug explains material selection—from sourcing premium pheasant marabou to choosing between possum, arctic fox and coyote fur for different fly sizes. He breaks down common tying mistakes, particularly over-dressing with fur, and shares his preferred method for securing lead eyes with thread wraps and Zap-A-Gap.Featured Techniques: Fishing the Home InvaderThe core revelation: the Home Invader excels at slow presentations in fast water. Doug introduces his "do nothing" retrieve—casting with a 250-300 grain sink tip, getting tight to the fly and letting current provide all the action. This technique targets pressured brown trout holding in heavy Yellowstone River runs where traditional fast strips fail. Doug details his complete system: 7-8 weight rods, 24-foot sink tips, 15-pound Maxima butt sections and loop-knotted fluorocarbon tippets. Color selection follows water clarity—natural olives and tans in clear conditions, bright yellows and chartreuse in muddy water.Yellowstone River Streamer StrategiesDoug reveals how Montana's fishing pressure has changed his approach over 20 years. Fish now occupy extremely difficult lies in heavy current where precise boat positioning matters more than ever. The Home Invader's inherent movement allows effective coverage of these spots with minimal manipulation—critical when you get only one cast to pressured fish. Doug discusses adapting fly weight by pairing different grain sink tips with varied lead eye sizes, creating everything from dredging presentations to near-surface swims.Beyond Trout: Saltwater AdaptationsThe episode includes a bonus discussion of the Home Slice—Doug's weightless Home Invader variation for tarpon and permit. Using plastic eyes instead of lead, the Home Slice swims right-side-up and has proven deadly for backcountry species. Doug also shares his current permit experiment: fishing floating crab patterns over sargassum weed mats with explosive visual strikes.Listen Now for Proven Streamer TacticsWhether you're chasing Yellowstone browns, smallmouth bass or backcountry permit, this episode delivers actionable insights from a pattern designer who's refined his craft for 30 years. Doug's willingness to share detailed techniques—from leader formulas to retrieve cadences—makes this essential listening for serious streamer anglers.SponsorsThanks to Schultz Outfitters, TroutRoutes and

Today's Headlines: Former FBI Director James Comey pled not guilty to charges of obstruction and making false statements, with his trial now set for January 5th. Meanwhile, Trump's picking new enemies, calling for Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to be jailed for “failing to protect ICE officers.” Both fired back, with Johnson saying it's not the first time Trump's tried to have a Black man unjustly arrested. Adding to that authoritarian flavor, new data shows nearly a quarter of FBI agents are now focused primarily on immigration enforcement — a number that hits 40% in some major field offices. Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have finally agreed on the first phase of their ceasefire plan — Israel will pull back troops, hostages will go home, and prisoners will walk free. Qatar and Hamas added that the deal also opens the gates for aid to enter Gaza. At the same time, his administration quietly inked an executive agreement giving Qatar near–NATO-level security guarantees — a move that normally requires Senate approval, but apparently we're skipping that part now. In economic news, gold prices just hit a record high of $4,000 an ounce — the strongest rally since 1979 — while the dollar is down more than 9% this year, signaling a crisis of confidence in U.S. institutions. A 29-year-old Florida man was arrested for starting the January wildfires that destroyed over 17,000 homes in Malibu and Palisades, killing 30 people. And to end on a rare uplifting note, 64-year-old immunologist Fred Ramsdell won the Nobel Prize in Medicine — learning the news only after returning from an off-the-grid Montana vacation.
