In this episode of Rabbit Holes, we take a deep look at the Wailea 670 (Honuaʻula) development and the long-standing fight over its impact on Maui. What started as a plan to provide mixed-use residential housing has morphed into yet another luxury-driven project, with broken promises along the way. We explore: The history of Wailea 670, from its original approval in 2008 to its latest legal and environmental challenges. The shrinking affordable housing commitments—how 700 promised units became just 288, and what that means for local families. Environmental and cultural concerns, including threats to one of Maui's last dryland forests and over 200 cultural sites, including iwi kūpuna (ancestral burials). The political landscape, the legal loopholes developers use, and how similar projects across Hawaiʻi follow the same pattern. A conversation with Stacey Alapai, breaking down what's at stake and how people can take action. How to Testify Against Wailea 670 The Maui Planning Commission is holding a special public hearing on March 11, 2025 to determine the future of Wailea 670. Your voice matters.

Aloha, and welcome to another episode of the Hawaii Vacation Connection Podcast. I'm Bruce Fisher, also known as AlohaBruce. Today, I'm sharing my impressions of Maui Tourism after my recent visit—my first time back in over a year. NOTE: the notes below are just that. To get more of my insights, please actually listen to the podcast!! If you're planning a trip to Maui, you may find this helpful as I delve into the pros and cons of the island one year later, with insights on key properties and attractions. The Pros Fewer Crowds, More Space Much like during the pandemic, Maui is currently less crowded, which has its perks. For instance, I spent time at Wailea Beach during sunset, and to my surprise, I only counted about 25 people on the beach and in the water. The sunsets are as spectacular as ever, and with fewer people around, it feels like you have the island almost to yourself. This less-crowded experience extends to restaurants, beaches, and tourist hotspots, offering a more intimate and peaceful vacation experience. Very few people on Wailea Beach behind the Fairmont Kea Lani Lower Prices on Local Products and Souvenirs With fewer visitors on the island, many local businesses are offering great deals on products and souvenirs. Whether you're shopping at Whaler's Village or browsing local shops and kiosks, you'll notice that prices on items like hats, clothing, and other souvenirs are more competitive than usual. For instance, I bought a hat at Whaler's Village that would normally cost $30, but I snagged it for just $21—a great example of the discounts you can find. Souvenir shops are responding to the dip in foot traffic by offering lower prices, making it a perfect time to grab some Hawaiian keepsakes. From locally made jewelry to artwork and clothing, you'll find deals that allow you to take home a little piece of Hawaii without breaking the bank. Affordable Airfares and Lodging Airfare to Hawaii has become more affordable, and we're seeing some great deals for Maui. There has been a slight dip in the number of flights, but the available flights offer good prices. Condos, in particular, are offering better rates, and many hotels are starting to push free nights as incentives to attract visitors. It's a good time to consider visiting if you're looking for value. The Cons Car Rental Woes One of the first negatives I encountered upon arriving in Maui was the car rental experience. Despite a beautiful new car rental facility, the lines were long and the staffing felt inadequate. Even with a "quick get in the car and go" option, there were delays and confusion at the counter. It's a small inconvenience, but it's something to be aware of, especially if you're arriving during peak times. Emotional Sensitivity and Stress Maui is still healing from the devastating fires, and there's a noticeable emotional weight in the air. When I stopped at a few local spots like Krispy Kreme in Kahului (where we only have Krispy Kreme on Maui, by the way!), I could sense a bit of stress and sensitivity from the locals. This is understandable given the challenges the island has faced, and I think it's important for visitors to be aware of this and approach their trip with empathy and respect. Property Insights The Fairmont Kea Lani: A Serene Luxury Retreat New Renovated Fairmont Kea Lani Lobby During my recent visit to Maui, I stayed at the beautifully renovated Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea. This property is a true gem, and with fewer tourists on the island right now, the experience was even more peaceful and luxurious. The resort itself is stunning—recent renovations have refreshed the entire property, making it feel modern while retaining that classic Hawaiian elegance. What struck me most during my stay was how empty the property felt. While this might seem like a downside, it worked in my favor. I had the pool and many of the resort's other amenities almost entirely to myself.

Aloha Bruce provides important information about the Maui wildfires that have burned Historic Lahaina Town to the ground and continue to burn in multiple areas on the Valley Isle. Bruce says straight away to come to Hawaii, “just not to Maui”, on this Saturday, August 12, 2023, episode of the Hawaii Vacation Connection Podcast. Current Situation Bruce gives details about current conditions in Maui and the locations of current blazes. He discusses the current dry conditions and dry brush “waiting to ignite” that he passes through on his daily hikes in southeast Oahu. “It's kind of scary,” he says. 80 people have so far died in Lahaina because of the Maui wildfires, Bruce notes solemnly. “There will never be a Historic Lahaina Town again,” Bruce says and offers some insight into possibilities as redevelopment plans begin following the completion of the grim task of the search and recovery of victims of the blaze. Bruce is concerned that large corporations will offer area landowners victims, large sums of money and turn Lahaina into another Waikiki. “It would just be so sad to see that happen.” Bruce talks about the thousands of visitors affected by the Maui wildfires and notes that the rest of Hawaii is still open. “We are not going to be booking people to Maui,” Bruce says of the immediate future. He does note that the rest of Hawaii retains its amazing natural beauty. 90% of Maui is Open! For visitors with plans to travel to Maui, Bruce notes the high costs of staying in areas like Wailea and he offers some options to stay on Oahu instead. Oahu is a great alternative to Maui, and he shares some of the many attractions here. “Honestly, of all the islands in Hawaii, Maui is not always my first pick,” he says, despite internet algorithms that tend to point people to the Valley Isle. “Sometimes I have to talk people out of going to Maui. We're saying don't go to Maui right now.”There is no reason to cancel your Hawaii vacation because of the Maui Wildfires. “You can still come here and have an amazing time,” Bruce says, and he mentions that the Big Island also has some beautiful beaches. “We are all in shock over what has happened here,” Bruce says. “It's just so sad.” He shares his personal history in Hawaii, including being the first Kauai journalist after Hurricane Iniki devastated much of the Garden Isle in 1992. He discusses the lack of communication at the time and describes the efforts made to establish communication channels between the Hawaiian Islands. “It was a life-changing experience. We reported it, and we helped people.” Bruce says communications and resources have greatly improved since then, and he offers some positive thoughts about the recovery efforts in Lahaina, which are going to take years following the deadly, devastating, and tragic Maui wildfires.

The White Hawaiian, starring Eric Gilliom, is a smart and witty one-man show that first debuted in 2019 to sold-out audiences at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Following its initial success in 2020, White Hawaiian did it again at Mulligan's on the Blue in Wailea with more sell-out shows and rave reviews. This summer, Gilliom will reprise his roles for two nights followed by a matinee each month at the ProArts Playhouse in Kihei. White Hawaiian will have a three-month residency with the opening weekend starting on July 8th,9th, and 10th followed by August 12th, 13th, 14th, and finally September 16th, 17th, and 18th, 2022. The White Hawaiian was written by Eric Gilliom and Brian Kohne and is based on Eric Gilliom's famous family history and Eric's career as an entertainer. Furiously donning outlandish wigs with gaudy costumes, the story unfolds from his great grandparents to his grandparents on down to his parents then seamlessly into growing up with his six-time Grammy-nominated sister, Amy Hānaialiʻi Gilliom. The reliving of his career highlights and follies makes this a full-circle story that is rich and entertaining. JULY DATES Friday, July 8, 2022, at 7:30 PM Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 7:30 PM

Jennifer Kem grew up in the plantation town of Wailea, HI. As the young descendent of Filipino immigrants, she was a studious introvert. Her grandmother, a great influence, had her reading the business section of the newspaper, giving her a very important lesson early on: “You can think beyond what's around you.” Jen generously shares her story, taking us from childhood, through her MBA at UC Berkeley to her work at the Ogilvy Company where she ran coffee and ached to do grander copy writing. She watched as ad execs created “Ad Duels” pitting Coke against Pepsi and found their use of architypes intriguing. Diving deeper into the concepts of how people consume, Jen found that marketing really IS a science! She's a lover of Values-Driven Leadership and notes that so much of a leader's journey is based on Vision, Violation, and Voids. Jen's journey continued as she became a product manager at Oracle and went on to run Verizon's B2B for the west coast. Known as “the fixer” even in her early 20s, Jen wanted to learn how to succeed more greatly. She asked an important question of one of the senior leaders: What do I have to do to have your job in 10 years? It wasn't a wish, it was a foundational question for creating a plan. But when she took on some hard work and was passed over for a promotion, she began to wonder how to make it on her own. What will someone pay me for? o Does the market want it? o Will people really pay for it? Seeing how big Victoria's Secret became, she began an import and retail business in Hawaii, a biz that grew to $10M. She notes that she was betting on herself as the outlier. But 2008 was cruel to so many in retail and her business was no exception. She lost almost everything and fell into a depression. She recalls sitting on the front porch, just watching cars pass by and her then-10-year-old daughter saying, “Mommy, you're Jen Kem and it's time to wake up.” She notes, “I was the hardest project I had to take on.” Returning to corporate to get back on her feet, she reentered as a consultant and created KemCom, now a multi-million-dollar company. She began to study how she had become a success and created a model for others, launching The MasterBrand Institute. Here, she guides entrepreneurs back to Values-Driven Leadership and notes that most fail when it comes to managing systems (people, processes, and technology). She notes that leaders must take on three roles, then let go of two. - Visionizer – founder - Strategizer – overseeing Sales and Marketing - Mobilizer – the one to oversee operations, processes, and systems Jen has a gift for the audience if you'd like to explore your architype and leadership style. It's specifically for the One Sharp Sword audience. Go to www.confidently.me/sharp for an assessment valued at $250.

How can I support local family businesses on the Road to Hana? This is a question emailed to us by one of our podcast listeners. The short answer is: every gift shop, market and food venue on the Road to Hana is a local business! You'll find there are no chain restaurants or big box retailers once you leave Kahului. Mike White's 'The White Lotus' is a product of the pandemic; a quick-turnaround series that went from inception to air in 9 months as HBO scrambled in 2020 to line up produceable content from trusted creators. Shot in one location, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, under strict quarantine protocols, the series is a testament to the power of what can happen when limited options meet fairly unlimited resources (HBO's edict to White was that it had to be shot in one location and cost less than 3 million dollars an episode). Being me, I resisted watching it when every one else got on board last summer when it was released. Approaching it on my own terms and timeline is just how I gotta roll. But I'm so glad to inform you all, nine months after you all figured out how great it was, that I LOVED 'The White Lotus' in so many ways I was inspired to share this episode with you all. So if you've seen the series, you'll enjoy some of the background information on the production, casting, and that fantastic and unforgettable music. If you haven't seen it yet, this episode contains no spoilers.
Ka'ana means "to share" in Hawaiian. At Ka'Ana Kitchen at the Andaz Maui at Wailea, Chef Chance Savell creates shareable dishes using ingredients from local farmers and fishermen. An Arkansas native, Chef Savell has his special version of buttermilk fried chicken with pineapple on the menu alongside delicious mains of Big Eye Ahi, Prime Sirloin Strip and fresh caught fish. Enjoy a spectacular Maui sunset while dining and don't miss the cocktails created by celebrated "mixtress" Julie Reiner. The Connected Table Live Radio Show is broadcast live at 2pm ET Wednesdays on W4CY Radio (www.w4cy.com) part of Talk 4 Radio (www.talk4radio.com) on the Talk 4 Media Network (www.talk4media.com). Diane Woodburn of Maui No Ka Oi Magazine speaks to Sebastian Consiglieri & Chef Martin Monteverde about the upcoming debut of 1111 Nikkei Sushi Bar & Restaurant in Wailea. In this podcast Sebastian and Martin talk about their Peruvian backgrounds, how they saw an opportunity to bring creative Peruvian fusion cuisine to the US, how the company is built with a foundation of giving back to the local community, their partnership supporting Imua Family Services, their approach to their new menu, why blending different approaches to Peruvian cuisine works so well, their recommendations for a way to try different components of their menu, and their excitement for the restaurant opening in Wailea on February 22nd, 2022.

He was adopted by the Silverwater Cafe in Port Townsend as a kid and then on to a waiter at Larry Blake’s in Berkeley. He made a bold decision to move on his own to Maui at the age of 17 with no more than $40 remaining upon arrival. As many of you know Maui is a special place and it can accept you or kick you out. His first job on the island was on the boats going to Molokini everyday but he found a second home as valet at Carelli's on the beach and then eventually moving on to opening Seawatch Wailea in the front of the house. In time Chef found his way back to the kitchen at Stouffer's which is now the Andaz and got his first leadership role as head Chef at Kai Ku Ono and then at the Greek Bistro, both in Kihei. Things began to get stagnant so Christopher made another bold move to Manhattan in attempts to become a famous or respected food person. He started at the Garage on West 4th and 7th Avenue and then to Union Pacific on 22 and Park. After two cold east coast winters Christopher came back to Maui as the founder of Local boys shave ice shops and then later the Farmacy health bars. All this has lead Chef full circle back to Wailea Kitchen with a unique opportunity to create something different and try to influence the way food or restaurants operate here and then beyond.

Hello Runners! How are you? I hope you are doing ok through these tough times with the Covid-19 virus that has shut down our communities and have dramatically changed our lives. I hope you are following the CDC guidelines and self isolating, socially distancing and washing your hands. I am so thankful that our sport allows us the freedom to still get outside to run. Of course, not in a group and mostly by yourself. If you do run with someone, you still need to keep a distance of 6 feet. This episode is very special to me and I will cherish this episode forever. In early February, a few of the core runners from the Kihei Wednesday Night Running Group, which I organized for five years, got together at a local craft brew pub, What Ales You. We had a wonderful conversation and talked about our running group and the power of belonging to a running group. You will not only enjoy it but it will remind you of your running group, if you belong to one. I also give my personal thoughts about the most touching surprise goodbye party for me to send me off to Denver. It was the most touching, wonderful and humbling thing that ever happened to me in my life. And the gift that Kathleen and the group presented too me was very overwhelming. There is a picture of it and other pictures from that night below. And even the last Wednesday run that night, Zohra wrote in chalk very nice messages along the route. I ran a bit by myself that night and looked at each of those messages. I miss this group and all the wonderful runners that have made my life so much better. And I am thankful to Kathleen and Josh for keeping the group going. These are trying times and I would like to hear from you. I hope you are all doing well. Please feel free to send me an email at jim@feelgoodrunning.com and let me know what is on your mind and if I can provide any advice. I will answer all emails personally. I would love to hear from you and how you are doing. Be safe, be healthy and do your part so we can all get back to normal soon! ~ Jim SHOW NOTES (https://feelgoodrunning.com/wp-admin/What%20Ales%20You) - Great craft brew pub in Kihei, HI - Where we recorded the conversation! This episode is part 6 of our mini-series on the Hawaiian Islands. In this episode, we share some stories from the south side of the island that made us fall in love with Hawaii. Maui has a special place in our hearts. Listen in as we talk about exploring some of the bigger beaches in Wailea, our favorite local place to eat, how a whale watching excursion is much different than we thought it would be, and what we’d do differently on our next trip to Haleakala. Follow our adventures on Instagram. If you want to see snapshots of the things we talk about in this episode, check out our Youtube video that we captured from our time in Hawaii.

Famous chefs don’t become known because of their humility. But as it turns out, their restaurants might. In this episode of the podcast, I spoke with renowned chef Peter Merriman about his unique approach to hospitality in his restaurants. Why is it that a person always feels welcome when they check-in with his hosts? How does Peter motivate his entire staff to entertain like they are “throwing a party every night,” prepare each and every dish like they are “cooking for their mom,” and consistently go above and beyond to “do the right thing” for every customer they meet? In this episode, we discuss: Why service matters as much (if not more) than the food What are his “vital few” that he focuses on with staff? The key importance of establishing and maintaining relationships How Peter hires right, then gives his people a chance to shine What it means to focus on the “internal customers” How those who are served can get the most out of our experience as customers The importance of sustainability, and connecting with the source of our food How customer demand impacts quality The importance of humility to the success of any restaurant Thanks for listening! Known as the original “locavore”, Peter is a vocal champion of Hawaii’s farmers, ranchers and fishermen. His restaurants showcase island grown and harvested foods through simple preparations that reflect the myriad flavors of Hawaii’s multiculturalism. Dubbed the “Pied Piper of Hawaii Regional Cuisine” by The Los Angeles Times, he is a continuing inspiration to Hawaii’s thriving culinary scene. Early Years Peter was raised in Pittsburgh, where a passion for food was instilled in him from a young age. His mother, Woodene, was a noted Pittsburgh Post Gazette food writer, and by the time he was 16, he was doing “grunt work” for Master Chef Ferdinand Metz at the H. J. Heinz Co. (Chef Metz later headed the renowned Culinary Institute of America.) Pursuing the opportunity to play football, Peter attended The University of Pennsylvania and studied Political Science. After graduation, Merriman enrolled in a three-year Chef's Apprentice Program with RockResorts under the auspices of the American Culinary Federation. The apprenticeship program took Peter to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and to Woodstock, Vermont, where he studied at the Woodstock Inn, under the supervision of Chef Hans Schadler. He then went on to various stints in resort areas across the United States and Europe, including a summer working among the vineyards of France’s Champagne region. In early 1983, Peter was hired as a cook for the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. He arrived in Hawaii with one suitcase and $75 in his pocket thinking he would stay a few months at the most. But he fell in love with the natural beauty of the islands and the rich culture of the people who live there. In 1985, only two years after his arrival, he was appointed Executive Chef of the Mauna Lani Resort’s new Gallery Restaurant. Chef & Pioneer of Hawaii Regional Cuisine At his interview for the chef position at The Gallery Restaurant, Peter was asked what type of food he wanted to feature. Without thinking, he said “regional cuisine” and went on to explain how no other restaurants were serving the local fish and produce. Peter believed that to be able to offer fish that was caught the same morning and to use vegetables harvested the day that they were served was essential to providing the best gourmet Hawaii cuisine. When Peter got the job, he had to deliver on the concept, but quickly discovered there were almost no local products available. Peter advertised in the newspapers and went out to the farms, ranches and docks to let local producers know he wanted whatever they had. “We’re in this together,” he told them, “If you grow it or catch it, I’ll buy it, and we all succeed.” Pretty soon he had built solid partnerships and local producers would try to get or grow whatever he needed. As he began recruiting other chefs to focus on local foods, “Hawaii Regional Cuisine” was born with Peter as founding president. Peter says it was just the right thing to do. “We were able to serve the freshest, most flavorful food at the restaurant. The bonus is that it benefits the local economy while helping to preserve the land and the agrarian way of life. Merriman’s Restaurants In 1988, Peter opened his signature upcountry restaurant, Merriman’s, in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii. He was proclaimed, "A gourmet in cowboy country" by Hana Hou!, the Magazine of Hawaiian Airlines. The New York Times raved “Everything at Merriman’s…features the freshest local ingredients paired in exciting ways,” and San Francisco Magazine exclaimed “His Wok-charred Ahi is to die for!” It was at Merriman’s Waimea that Peter garnered the attention of the James Beard Foundation and as a result, he was a Finalist in the “Best Chef Northwest & Hawaii” category three distinct times. In 1994, Peter partnered with TS Restaurants to open Hula Grill on Maui’s famed Ka`anapali Beach. Hula Grill, touted “the best fish house in the islands” by Honolulu Magazine, brought the concepts of Hawaii Regional Cuisine to a beachside setting. Two more fine dining restaurants were added to the Merriman’s Hawaii group in 2008 and 2009 - Merriman’s Kapalua, on the grounds of the scenic resort on Maui’s West Side, and Merriman’s Fish House in Poipu, Kauai. Downstairs from the fish house, Peter offers casual dining at Merriman’s Gourmet Pizza & Burgers. In June 2018, Merriman’s Hawaii Group opened for the first time on Oahu, bringing Merriman’s Kaka’ako to Ward Village by Howard Hughes. In 2011, Peter launched a new venture in casual dining, Handcrafted Restaurants, with restaurateur Bill Terry. Handcrafted Restaurants is a multi-concept restaurant company operating four restaurants across the Hawaiian Islands: Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman in Wailea and Ka’anapali, Maui and Ko Olina Oahu, Moku Kitchen in Kaka’ako, Oahu, and the Beach House in Poipu, Kauai.

A few weeks back i had a week day off and called a friend whom i intended to meet for lunch some time now. His name is carl. I spoke of him on the Charity Tourist Podcast, as he participated in the ride for tots the marine corp toys for tots program. So we met for lunch in Hawaii Kai at the Kona Brewing company. There we chatted. He is an experience and successful business owner and fan of the Ohio State buckeyes so we had a lot to talk about. I was seeking advise on business and input for moving forward. 1st We talked about my 4 Buckeyes comic strip and side project, told him about a few obstacles in finishing the book. He encouraged me to do a pre-order sale of my 4 Buckeyes Book “The Story of OHIO” reassuring me that its better to try and fail than having not tried at all. Well I plan on doing just that and i will alert you to it when i do. 2rd we discussed the show you are listening to now. Hawaii Posts. He made some suggestions about how to target my audience better and gave a few suggestions that would switch up a few things on the show. For instance he suggested that i focus on the events and put the weather and surf at the tail end. Shoots I guess i will give it a try. Now Carl is headed into open heart surgery this week and i ask that we keep Carl in our thoughts and prays as he recovers. Good Luck Carl…God Bless you with a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Life is not a Rehearsal. That’s on the Marque outside a theater pictured on The Verve’s Single by the same name. Life is not a Rehearsal. for real. I remind my son of that all the time to embrace life, prepare for tomorrow but live for today. Tell the people you love that you love them. The Friday after lunch with carl i got a text from my friend David, i went to preschool - college with him and swam on the same team for years with his brother Frank and Doug. Well Davids father passed away. He was a accomplished obstetrician. Think of how many people he helped to bring into this world. He was always pool side at swim meets. Sunday I got another text message from another friend Kenny. He informed me that his father had font be with the lord. His father was a Good kind hearted man who was active as a coach on soccer teams or an adult leader in the scouts. I Let Kenny know as i did with David that i was there for them if they wanted to call and talk. Being in Hawaii and them 3000 miles from here on the mainland i knew i couldn’t be there for either of them in there time of need. Monday Morning I am driving a client to the airport when my friend Todd here on the islands sent a text that simply said “Steve Passed Away Man” I dropped off and replied No … Aw man Todd replied “yeah for real like wtf” Steve Kanemori passed away. 47 years old. It was hard for me to process. Steve is a local braddah who was larger than life, a friend, a business partner, God father to my Children and Uncle to many many kids. I moved out here to by encouragement by a good friend, Josh who moved here after leaving Ohio State. He said to me on the phone, “if you wanna surf and make surf films this is the place to be.” referring to Hawaii. When i moved out here I had $400 cash a near maxed credit card, my bike camera equipment and a duffle bag. Thinking was going to market my brand “Trippin Everywear” by shooting movies with surfer skaters and mountain bikers wearing my brand. Big Dreams small budget, I was broke in a week. I quickly got a videographer job at the wedding emporium where i met Steve and Todd. That was 21 years ago. During that time i lived in Kuliouou Valley with Josh and friends and coincidently that was the valley Steve grew up in so we hung out there and also in kaimuki as i eventually moved closer to work. But then I moved to the North Shore making surf films, Steve stayed in Waikiki and killed it in the wedding video business. He was the best. A mast shot, good with customers and totally dedicated to providing the best possible wedding video. He would shoot 2 maybe 4 in a day and edit most before the next day. In 2004 i moved to Waikiki and set up an office with Steve. He did weddings and Corporate video and i plugged away at sports and adventure videos. When Steve Jobs introduced the Video iPod in 2005 and asked for Video Podcasters. Steve and I came up with the name Hawaii Surf Session Report. He believed in all of my hare-brained ideas and knew how to rib me about my over zealous ambition. After about 7 years together making videos separately and together we eventually closed offices. We stayed in touch and started meeting at the salt flats in Maunalua bay, its a parking lot for boats and trailers and cars and whatnot. We called it the docks…. there really were no docks…. but there is a boat ramp. Anyhow. Almost 3 nights a week for the last 10 years we would meet at the docks with Todd, Trevor, Jay, Brian, Shawn M, Shawn P and family and friends and old friends and we welcomed new friends as they traveled through the islands. W drank beer talk story laugh, rant, encourage, play clash and the kids like Jimmy and Crimson would run around chasing crabs on the beach, light saber wars or gamed the night away under the stars. Steve was alway there. At the dock or even at times of need Steve was there for you. He would be a good uncle to Crim and Jim and talk to them about acting up at home or school and say “boy you better get good grades “ Eventually my youngest Tommy, got to go to the docks. He would give uncle Steve a high five and a big hug when we left . He thought coming out to the docks and seeing tod and uncle Steve was really special. Jimmy Really loved uncle Steve. First fist bump and local handshake always went to uncle Steve. Jimmy would sit in his lap and as he got bigger uncle Steve would joke that he’s gonna have to settle for the fist bump. But Jimmy always gave him a big hug before we parted ways. As we would drive down the Kalani Steve and Jimmy would exchange shakers through the car windows. It was a big thing. He was a big friend and meant so much to so many people. And now he is gone. That fast. here one day gone the next. The last night i saw him we talked about this podcast and my book and the chauffeur job. He was going to be working with me as a chauffeur. we were stoked to be working together again. Even though he still encouraged me to pursue my creative interest. I excitedly told him about an email i got from a website that does travel reviews and they listened to the show and contacted me offering content. I told him i started clearing out my storage unit and found all of my cd from the Surf Session report days, explaining i have rights to all of that music and now i can play that music on the Hawaii Posts. Started dreaming of bringing back Surf Session report for version 2020. Even remarked on how much i wish we could get an office space together…. like the old days. He said “ I never really saw you happier than when you were in the office after coming back from shooting surf and still had to edit but your were happy and stoked you were following your dream and it was working, you gotta believe in yourself. You gotta focus on one thing. You can do it.” I remember saying “ Shoots brother Steve you always believe in me” The night of his passing all of his friends gathered at the docks to celebrate his life. As tradition in Hawaii memorials are made with all sorts of flowers and candles. So we lit some candles opened a beer for Steve. The kids made a R.I.P Steve K with white coral on the sand lot. Todd changed it to R.I.L. as in rest in love, 11 days later the memorial still stand at the docks. His mother will spread his ashes there and We plan on placing a plaque and a coconut tree in honor of braddah Steve. Years ago i made a 3 part series called Fieldtripp Hawaii and Steve was my partner and camera guy. In the episode you will catch a glimpse of Steve. Its a fun episode about the Shaka….. so hang loose braddah Fieldtripp Hawaii https://youtu.be/TcC6YKxr2y0 Bradded Noland- "Big Ships" https://youtu.be/Ge-BXhOYFPA HiP EVENTS SHOW 021 s2e7 june 7 - 13 Events Calendar brought to you by Tiki’s Grill & Bar 2570 Kalakaua Ave, Waikiki, Hawaii www.tiki'sgrill.com Tiki's Grill & Bar is Waikiki's locally owned and operated independent restaurant destination. Danielle Travis has created her own pathway to a sport that is generally perceived to be elitist and usually demands the wherewithal to be able to own a string of polo ponies. Based in Hawaii, Danielle has the added challenge of traveling to the mainland to compete with other clubs, which speaks to her passion and determination to further her game. She has played with some of the sport’s top players and in 2011 was one of two women among 12 players to be named to Team USPA by the U. S. Polo Association. Born in Wailea, Hawaii, Danielle first sat in the saddle at age four and spent her childhood emerged in a variety of sports from surfing and wakeboarding, naturally, to tennis, softball, competitive gymnastics and dressage and hunter jumpers. It was when she discovered polo at the age of 16 where she found the equestrian sport that would provide a team environment that she found most satisfying. Her passion for polo became an addiction once she had a taste of college polo while at Santa Barbara City College and later at Texas Christian University. Once she had graduated Danielle went shopping for a polo pony but instead of perusing the polo world she went on Craig’s List to find the pony in Texas that she could afford. An Appendix Quarter Horse called Bonnie fit her budget and ambitions and she loaded her on a trailer to haul her to Aiken, South Carolina. She got the leg up she needed playing in polo tournaments and continued to travel from coast to coast gaining experience and developing the network she needed to establish herself in the sport. With Bonnie back home on Hawaii having a break from tournaments, Danielle has headed back to California to lease some ponies and play the clubs there with a view to becoming self sufficient with her own string one day and eventually play in Argentina and Europe. Chris Stafford caught up with Danielle just before she headed to California. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. In a competitive marketplace, a company’s benefits package is an announcement of its values and mission. We don’t really have look any further than the Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do to you. In scripture we are told “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt. 12:31) Jesus here compared loving one’s neighbor as loving the “self.” Clearly, God knows that we love ourselves. The charge here is to love others with that same love. Generally speaking, the best benefit that a company can provide to any employee is rewarding them with meaningful work. (Eph. 4:28) When work is missional the employee and employer both benefit synergistically. In order to compete, an employer can love on its employee by providing “at-market” benefits or even “above-market” benefits. Benefits such as medical coverage, dental, vision, 401K, bonuses, stock options, and other incentives are fairly standard. Providing an employee with at market or above market benefits serves several purposes: 1) it is an opportunity to show how much a company cares for its employees; 2) it can validate the company’s core values (or not); 3) it can promote employee retention; and 4) it can create happiness at the workplace. As Richard Branson famously reminds us “Train your employees so well that they can leave; but treat them so well that they won’t want to.” An employer would do well do be mindful of the demographics of its employee base. A younger population may find above market pay and regular bonuses superior to say extra Pringles on the shelves. By contract, an employee base comprised of parents would surely appreciate full family medical coverage, and a flexible work schedule or “work anywhere” model. Other non-traditional benefits such as “Mindfulness” training to line managers, an Adoption Honorarium, Identity Theft protection for the employee and his/her entire immediate family, and Student Loan assistance are opportunities to attract, and co-opt employees. In this episode we look at a few more novel benefits as well. For instance, a vacation embargo against contacting vacationing employees so that time off can be appropriately focused on family. Similarly, the employee would not earn brownie points for “checking in” while on the sandy beaches of Wailea, Maui. Occasionally, a company - with great intentions - may provide benefits that actually undermine family time. Rusty examines an early story from the annals of IBM where Tom Watson famously implemented cafeterias....but just for lunch. Benefits such as providing breakfast and dinner on campus may send the wrong signal to the employee base. It may convey a message “we want you to work early and stay late.” In sum, the suite of benefits that a company provides to its employees should align with the company’s values. How the leaders of a company practice the promoted benefits will speak much louder than what is written in the employee handbook. When a company is authentic about how a particular benefit is practiced in real life, it provides the employee with a sense of peace in exercising that benefit. Such an environment will likely have the unintended consequence of breeding happier employees, employees who want to work, and employees who are proud to flash their company badge.
