From the gridiron to the vineyard, Will Blackmon is redefining what it means to build a second act rooted in authenticity and excellence. Dubbed the “NFL Wine Guy,” he's on a mission to make wine more approachable, inclusive, and unforgettable. That philosophy drives every facet of his brand, from curated experiences through his concierge service, The Wine MVP, to the debut of his Blackmon Cellars Napa Valley Red Blend. On this episode of Brand Slam, hosts Joe Kayata and Mary Sadlier explore Will's journey from professional athlete to wine entrepreneur. He shares how a curiosity sparked during his NFL days evolved into a credentialed passion grounded in education, expertise and a desire to bridge the gap between luxury wine and everyday consumers. He also opens up about the challenges of life after football and the importance of intentional reinvention. Will isn't just putting his name on a bottle. With training from the Court of Master Sommeliers and multiple certifications, he's earned real credibility in the wine world. For him, mastering the craft was essential to building trust and creating something with staying power. The Wine MVP started as a way to help athletes and professionals explore wine without pressure or pretense. With Blackmon Cellars, he's now producing his own wine, a natural progression for someone who values connection, hospitality and excellence in every pour. For Will, success off the field means finding purpose, staying curious and putting in the work—just like he did on every game day. Interested in a particular topic or want to be a guest? What I didn't expect when we first logged into Riverside.fm for the podcast...was his opening remarks. "I am a bit bi-polar, dyslexic, a recovering alcoholic, and diagnosed with ADHD." and my response was "Is that it?" Then that turned into what I expect to be a series of episodes because forty-five minutes just ain't enough time. In this engaging episode of "Wine Talks," I sit with Tim Hanni, a Master of Wine, to delve into the fascinating world of wine. Tim reveals historical insights, such as the original negative meaning of "terroir," and explains how wine education often overlooks the diverse perceptions and preferences of consumers. Tim shares his unconventional path to becoming a Master of Wine, highlighting his personal challenges with dyslexia and alcoholism. The conversation shifts to address the wine industry's failure to adapt to modern consumers, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of sensory individualism and adaptive marketing strategies. Tim critiques the industry's elitism and disconnect from wine's rich history, pointing out that even acclaimed wines like those from Bordeaux were traditionally sweet. This episode is a thought-provoking critique of the wine world, stressing the importance of embracing diversity in wine perceptions and learning. The term "terroir" originally had a negative connotation, referring to "soiled wine" which was of poor quality, much like soiled diapers. Tim Hanni, the guest of the podcast, is a Master of Wine who became one of the first two Americans to earn this prestigious title, despite having dyslexia, ADHD, and being a recovering alcoholic. Master Sommelier and Master of Wine programs differ substantially, with the latter focusing more on the business and science aspects of wine rather than purely service. Historically, French champagne was incredibly sweet, sometimes even sweeter than Coca Cola, challenging modern perceptions of what "fine" wine should be. Have at it folks...this really is some crazy stuff.

Vintage: 2022 Flavour: Always a fuller-bodied expression with flavours of grapefruit and green melon, some tropical ideas like pineapple and vanilla. Peg' Bay always has the knack of just the measure of new and aged oak barrels to bring shape and form to the bouquet and palate. The frame of this wine is bold and impactful with fruits and non-fruit flavours reflecting the bouquet along with a satin-cream mouthfeel. Cost: RRP at $45.00 Food pairings: Salmon with skin on, pan-seared or baked topped with a soy-glaze, served with lentils (or something earthy), something green and baked jacket potato with lots of sour-cream. Topicality: It's officially autumn, though daytime temps are still warmish, the evenings are definitely getting cooler - so a richer, weightier dish makes sense. Food that is filling and easy to prepare is always a plus. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Great CEOs Are Lazy by Jim Schleckser Jimschleckser.com Theceoproject.com How do the really exceptional CEOs get more done in less time than everyone else? What is their technique for getting their work done while still having the time to spend pursuing hobbies and spending quality time with their friends and family? The truth is that great and lazy CEOs know a secret when it comes to time management. Rather than spending a little time on a lot of things, the best CEOs spend most of their time eliminating the single biggest constraint to the growth of their business. They spend a lot of time diagnosing this constraint before taking action. This process is similar to looking for the kink in a garden hose so you can get the flow going again. These is no use trying to unkink the hose until you find the actual problem. Depending on the nature of the constraint, they engage in fixing the kink in the hose using one of five different roles the Learner Architect Coach Engineer Player These form the archetype for great leadership. These are all high leverage roles that create a permanent improvement in the business. This insight isn't just some theory either; it s derived directly from working with thousands of CEOs running high growth companies. The trick to being great and lazy is to only work at the point of constraint and avoid all work that doesn't increase organizational capacity. Lazy CEOs have a series of well developed tools to properly avoid this non-value work. I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it. -Bill Gates. So, do you want to keep working hard? Or would you rather get busy being lazy? Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul. I am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Kristen Owens. Kristin's debut novel, Elizabeth Sails (Rising Action Publishing Co/Simon & Schuster), launched two days ago. What can be better than discussing with the author the use of an actual cruise ship, The Queen Elizabeth, as a setting. Kristin told me, “After living in Europe, my husband and I moved back to the USA on the Queen Mary 2. The voyage was a life-changing experience. Ten years later, I've got my sea legs. Which happen to be a little chunkier because I've taken a fair number of cruises and haven't missed a single meal. And I've finagled a way of sailing more frequently – as a speaker. I entertain and educate passengers on writing, literature, and wine. So, I can't feel too guilty because hey, I'm working, people. I spend about six months on ships and get my best writing done onboard. It's like a quintessential writing retreat. With tea and scones daily at 3:30pm. To date, I've taken over a dozen cruises (300+ days) as a passenger and over a dozen as a speaker.” Kristen has experience sailing with Princess, Celebrity, Cunard and Viking. Kristin holds a Ph.D. in higher education and is an award-winning faculty member with over 25 years university experience. Now a full-time writer in sticky southwest Florida, Kristin has over 100 bylines as a contributor for celebrated magazines such as Wine Enthusiast, Writer's Digest, and 5280. She holds certifications with the Court of Master Sommeliers and Cicerone and travels the world writing about wonderful wines, beautiful beers, and surprising spirits. Her personal essays have won Honorable Mention for the 2018 New Millennium Writing Awards, awarded finalist for the 2019 New Letters' award in nonfiction, and included in RISE! Colorado's Book of the Year 2020. is being featured in The Writer's Digest Sept/Oct issue's "Breaking In" column.
