Alfredo Sainz's grandfather came to US from Chihuahua, Mexico, in the Bracero Program during World War II. That family then migrated from El Paso, Texas, through New Mexico and Southern California, then as far north as San Francisco. In this episode, get to know Fredo and his 415 Zine co-founder and co-publisher, Laine Wiesemann. We begin Part 1 with Fredo. Fredo and his brother were his family's first US-born members, making them both Chicanos. Most of his mom's family immigrated to the US, but many family members on his dad's side still live in Mexico, mostly in Guadalajara. His grandfather followed the work, which lead him to San Francisco in 1946. He worked in construction, eventually bringing his wife and children, including Fredo's mom, to live with him. Fredo's family settled in Excelsior near Crocker-Amazon Park. He attended Sacred Heart. After high school, he moved to Daly City and then the Sunset, where he lives today. Many of his high school classmates are still in SF. He's never lived anywhere else, though his family did spend summers in Mexico, something Fredo remembers fondly. His grandfather still had a ranch there where they would stay. They'd set out right when the school year ended, and return right before the fall semester began, with a side trip to K-Mart for school clothes, of course. I ask Fredo if he's ever been tempted to live somewhere else. He expounds on an emphatic “No!” Then he talks about a BBQ spot out near the ocean close to Doggie Diner where he was introduced to peach cobbler. Next, we turn to Laine and her story. She's from the Central Valley—Sanger, California, near Fresno. The family later moved north to Linden, near Stockton. Both her parents were train engineers. Her mom was one of the first women engineers, in fact. Laine visited San Francisco a lot during her high school years. She remembers crossing the Bay Bridge and being awed. She has memories of her dad taking her and a friend to Amoeba Records. She'd been doing art since she was little, but really started getting into it when she was in high school. In her freshman year, she did commissions. After graduation, she moved to Chico, where she says she “learned how to party.” A friend of hers had moved to The City and her boss was coming here, so, with those things in mind, Laine decided it was time. She moved to San Francisco in 2008. That boss ended up not moving here after all, so Laine had to find work upon her arrival here. She was able to do that relatively easily. Though she'd worked at Trader Joe's in Chico doing her store's art, by the time she got to San Francisco, she took a break from art. She worked for a caterer doing special events. And it was at that job that Alfredo and Laine met. I ask them what year that connection was made, and the fact that they both struggled to remember says a lot. Deep friendships can do that. They ballpark it as 2009 or 2010, before the Giants won their first World Series in SF. A small subset of their coworkers were artists, and they all formed a tight social circle. Fredo and others urged Laine to get back to painting. And, inspired by her and others in the group, he decided to pick something up also. He channeled the graffiti he'd done when he was younger. Soon enough, that work crew had a group art show and they asked Fredo to be part of it. That show led to another with the same artists. They had their own art, of course, but the four also contributed to a single collaborate piece. Me, Laine, and Fredo struggle to remember the name of the game with plastic monkeys that Laine compared the piece to. “Barrel of Monkeys,” Fredo eventually recalls. Yep. It was 2016 and with those shows behind him, Fredo decided to run with “above-ground” art. He says that, especially in those days, Laine helped him out a lot with the technical side of creating art. Fredo also credits her with being good at the business side of being an artist—promotion and sales and such. Since she started doing art again, Laine hasn't stopped. She shares how that got going again. She was visiting her girlfriend's relatives in Tamales, where many members of that family paint. Laine was inspired. But when it came to subject matter, she felt she had two options—the surrounding natural beauty (specifically, a nearby creek), or a shiny red teapot. She settled on a mashup of sorts—the teapot pouring into the creek. She had a lot of fun with that little painting. And so, she picked that up and ran with it. Check back next week for Part 2 with Laine and Fredo. We recorded this episode at Madrone Art Bar in April 2025. Photography by Mason J.

This week it's just Holden and Jackie, and they're both mourning the loss of David Lynch by viewing his filmic experiences, and both make plans to revisit shows they stopped in the past like post season 1 Twin Peaks, and HBO's Watchmen. Holden spent too much money at Amoeba Records, but got a pretty sweet Beyonce boxset vinyl! Jackie recalls watching Mulholland Drive with her mother in the theatre at roughly age 13. Jackie hates her love for Bad Girls Club, and despite spoiling it for Holden, Jackie won't let him spoil "The Brutalist". Jackie gives a breakdown of the Bam Margera episode of "The Curious Case Of...", and Holden lets Jackie know what he's thinkin' of the breakdown of "Dear Evan Hansen" by Jenny Nicholson. Jackie was not super impressed with "A Real Pain", but worth a watch now that it's on Hulu, and Holden gives an update on Kings of Tupelo! I miss Amoeba Records in Hollywood. When I was working a few blocks north of there, I'd visit a few times a week during my lunch break. They had a warehouse full of oddities of all mediums and genres, books, films and memorabilia. It was on one of these mid day excursions that I came across an album entitled: “The Rough Guide to Psychedelic Africa”. This was earmarked and marketed for people just like me. The music contained therein varied quite a bit from my idea of psych, but I love discovering new stuff so I couldn't pass it by.“Guitar Boy” was one of the tracks on this collection, by Nigerian national hero - the musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor Sir Victor Uwaifo (1941-2021), who achieved the very first gold record there with “Jeromi” in 1965. The genre is called High Life, developed in Ghana, a former British Colony on the west coast of Africa. It's style is immediately recognizable as Afro-Cuban, with it's fusion of Afro beats with western melodies played by guitars plucked in staccato arpeggios. Guitar Boy was banned for awhile because of it's connection to a failed coup in April '67, which was led by a Lt. Samuel Arthur (later executed), who marched prematurely into Broadcasting House Accra, announced the coup, and ordered the record to be played. Wow! You can't make this shit up.

Today's guest embodies retro in the most fun ways possible. Welcome Chelsea Nenni of Late Slip to the show. She grew up with music all around. Her dad worked in rock radio since the 70's. He even gave Carson Daly his first shot. In fact, Carson would often come over to Chelsea's house for spaghetti. But her lifelong obsession with oldies, Elvis in particular, came from her mom. But Chelsea didn't go the normal route into rock music. This is the point of the show where I learn about opera outreach programs. Chelsea began performing in operas by the age of eleven. She earned a scholarship to study opera in college at Chapman University. She soon moved to NYC to take her shot in the theater district. This is where she takes a turn into rock, kind of. There's an interesting detour into a cabaret version of the history of rock in there. Chelsea reveals that she will sometimes write songs during yoga class, which probably doesn't go over so well with the instructors. After a series of projects and bands, Late Slip was formed and recorded their first EP through a strange set of circumstances involving Amoeba Records. Late Slip has a new album out called I Love You. And I love IT! It's such a fun trip through the heyday of rock. And Chelsea is the perfect custodian. Not only does she emulate the sound, her album designs are influenced by early rock albums, too. She even wears vintage clothes for the covers! Grab I Love You on Bandcamp. This week we return to our popular feature of spotlighting certain tracks from Night Demon's history and taking deep dives into their origins. This time we tackle "Save Me Now," a deep cut and an outlier from the early Night Demon discography as it closes out the Curse of the Damned album. You'll hear about how and by whom the song was written, why the band viewed it as a departure at the time, how it was influenced by the British band Demon's first two albums, and how it kicked off a tradition of unconventional Night Demon album closers. We air demo versions of the song from its humble beginnings to a nearly finished version. And we explain how this song constituted a risk at the time. It's the annual RSD Black Friday Special, featuring interviews with a selection of people behind certain titles on "The List." Dave Wakeling, co-founder of The English Beat, talks about the Birmingham ska band's landmark 1980 debut, I Just Can't Stop It, newly expanded into a 2 LP set with bonus live and dub tracks. Amoeba Records' David Prinz and Polly Parsons (daughter of Gram Parsons) are here to talk about a newly unearthed live recording of Gram Parsons And The Fallen Angels (featuring Emmylou Harris) called The Last Roundup: Live From The Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia, March 16, 1973. The painter Anna Jensen has assembled a cast of heavyweight musicians to toast her (very much alive and healthy) husband, Drivin' N' Cryin's Kevn Kinney on the tribute album Let's Go Dancing: Said The Firefly To The Hurricane. David J., co-founder of Bauhaus and Love And Rockets, has a triple LP set of his demos called Tracks From The Attic. And RSD co-founder Carrie Colliton checks in from Raleigh, NC. Record Store Day Black Friday is November 24, for the full list and all things Record Store Day, go to RecordStoreDay.com. Written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Sponsored by Dogfish Craft Brewery, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Crosley turntables. Thanks for RSD's Michael Kurtz. If you love indie RECORD STORES (and who doesn't) and love VINYL, or perhaps are interested in why vinyl sales are booming everywhere, check out this week's THE TALK MUSIC podcast as I go deep into a fun chat with owner Mike Clasen about his SUPER COOL Records on Wheels shop located in Dundas, ON. Hear how he got started 38 years ago, how he survived the ups and downs of the music biz and listen to him talk about how and why the last few years have been his best ever. Alan Cross, host of The Ongoing History of New Music, has been a customer at Clasen's store. “He's using a similar in-store model, the focus on rare stuff, the store-written reviews, that we see with Amoeba Records in L.A. and Rough Trade in London, U.K.,” Cross said. “Customers want information and context. Sadly, there are fewer and fewer of those people every year. We need more guys like Mike.” The Talk Music Podcast features host Tom Treumuth, a Multi-Platinum music producer/manager/entrepreneur. The focus is on both Canadian and Global music commentary. Over his 40 year music career, Tom Treumuth has worked across all aspects of the music industry, including as a talent scout for RCA New York and as a Record Producer producing over 60 albums, with 8 achieving Gold and Platinum status (Honeymoon Suite, Helix, Big Sugar). His Hypnotic label released over 100 albums across all genres via A&M/Universal including artists such as Big Sugar, Anvil, Voivod, Figgy Duff, the Look People, Grimskunk, Chris Spedding and many others. Tom also owned and ran a recording studio, was a booking agent and was signed as a songwriter to RCA Publishing in New York. Tom loved artist management and during his career managed Honeymoon Suite, Lee Aaron, Platinum US rock group Steelheart and Hamilton born Kazzer ( Pedal to the Metal) signed to Columbia Records in New York. Tom also managed and Co produced rock act Gypsy Rose whom he signed to RCA in New York where he worked closely with Gene Simmons. More recently, Tom was Co-Managing Director of indie label Frostbyte (Universal) where he was involved in signing the Headstones and Matt Good. Tom also co-founded Latitude 44, a tech conference in Toronto and was Artistic Director for Estonian Music Week. Tom's career started as a musician in True Myth, who recorded the world's 1st digital rock album on Warner Music. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

AUSTIN CONSIGLIEREOLD NO. 1 by Guy Clark (RCA, 1975)Guy Clark's farmhouse was ground zero for a whole generation of America's finest songwriters. Check out the scene in the “Outlaw Country” doc, Heartworn Highways, with the babyfaced Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Guy harmonizing and trading songs and stories at the kitchen table. This was a summit meeting of Towne Van Zandt's Gospel spreaders keeping the flame of devotion burning- and Guy, Towne's best friend, was John the Baptist. Or, watch that David Letterman clip, 24 years later, with Guy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Steve, and Rodney standing up there like Mount Rushmore, singing “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train”, and you realize that the gospel seeds that had been spread in the 70's had flowered across the nation. Well, that signature song appears on this, Guy's debut album, and it's like encountering the Dead Sea Scrolls - the original rendition. Add to this the elegiac, definitive version of L.A. Freeway - the song Jerry Jeff made into a folk-rock hit - (with my high school buddy, Jon Simons on harp), and you begin to intuit that you're listening to history being made - and, oddly, it still sounds brand new.To quote the liner notes in Apple Music, a Guy Clark song…”isn't as loose as Walker, or as poetic as Townes Van Zandt, but his songs were the best built.” In 2006, this professional luthier put out the album “Workbench Songs” who's title characterizes his steady carpenter's hand. It was nominated for best Contemporary Folk/Americana Grammy. By this time the much covered consigliere of Austin was a universally acknowledged master and national treasure. In 2019 Steve Earle recorded an album of his mentor's songs and I made the pilgrimage to Amoeba Records to get my copy signed and my picture taken with the man who knew the man who wrote these songs.
What in the sam hell did we ever do before Netflix? Well...we watched HBO, we rented a shit-ton of DVD's, and we watched network television (cable?). Nothing wrong with any of this stuff, but for those of us who got a little bit bored with "Must See TV" and never really got into Friends or Seinfeld, Netflix brought some of the most original and groundbreaking stories ever put into a narrative series (or sitcom, for that matter). Without Netflix, there would probably not be the concept of "binge-watch" and there for sure would not be Netflix and Chill...but there would also not be these really clever, cool, funny, and truly original shows that made our Top Five List. And it's amazing that (a) Annie and I did have a small amount of overlap and (b) she shared shows that I've never heard of and vice-versa. Browsing on Netflix for me is a little bit like going into Amoeba Records in Hollywood - I need to set a time limit and make a decisive choice or I'll be in there all day. And just to confirm - these are the shows that Netflix has put into SEASONS and that originally aired on Netflix/were produced by Netflix. So, while I think you can still watch most of the seasons of American Horror Story on Netflix, it is not eligible for this week's episode because it's not an original Netflix Series. Furthermore - all of the many LIMITED SERIES (also known as Mini-Series) will be featured on a different show all together. So - as usual - if you like, hate, disagree, or have any sort of feelings either way about our lists, please send us an email: hello@thetopfivepodcast.com ENJOY!!!

Our wet winter was a good thing for our reservoirs, our groundwater supplies and our psyches.........but for Southern California beaches, not so much. The annual beach report card is out and all of that rain took a toll on both sand and surf. So pop open your SPF30 sunscreen....grab your shades and flip flops---cause we're headed to the beach to dive in and go In Depth. Tonight's THE night. When many Americans will actually start to focus on the 2020 presidential race. The first of two Democratic debates will kick start the presidential race and give 20 candidates--especially lesser known ones---to say HELLO to potential voters. And the key to losing weight might be a splash of hot sauce on your food. Unionized Southern California grocery workers may be bypassing the checkout counter as they head for the doors, having voted to authorize a strike. But there are many options out there for shoppers..raising the question...just how effective would a strike action be? We go In Depth. And the iconic Amoeba Records building on the corner of Cahuenga and Sunset is set for the wrecking ball. Is this the end of Amoeba? Stay tuned and find out. No real content warnings this week except for one off-hand misogynistic statement by a single character! There IS a weird scene that could be interpreted as being uh...dendrophilic, but unless you're really freaked out by a little tree kissing there's nothing too off-putting in this episode. We partake in some mystical bright bud and wander into the trippy wastelands with Brixia and Uta, the adventuring companions at the center of this fantasy novel plucked from a random cart of old sci fi/fantasy books for $1.00 at Amoeba Records. Can wrongly interpreted illustrations, sudden slut shaming, and hand-wavey plot points mar our journey with Brixia? ... ... Not really! It was good! This book wasn't terrible! We want to read the other books in this series now. Thanks, Andre Norton. While we were quite relieved to read something for the show that we both really enjoyed, listeners may not find this episode as entertaining as a result. We had very little criticism for this story, and we even enjoyed most of the art, though we do talk a bit about how the art was sort of inconsistent. Make sure to check our Instagram for some of the images from the book. If you're into cat sidekicks and fantasy ladies who aren't just talking bikinis, check out this book!
In episode 7, 'Theater of the Buy' we speak with two record store buyers and find out what they look for when they price records for trade or cash. In our first segment we speak with Ken Kubala from Amoeba Records. He is a buyer for both their Berkeley and San Francisco stores. His insight into the “theater of the buy” is gleaned from thirty years in the retail record business.

His insight into the “theater of the buy” is gleaned from thirty years in the retail record business. In our second segment, we have Henry Wimmer, the owner of Open Mind Music in Oakland, actually price out a stack of records for trade. And as a bonus, we congratulate Ron McMaster on his retirement from Capitol Records and play a cut from his long lost band, Public Nuisance, that has recently been found by Jack White’s Third Man Records. I discuss an upcoming Hardcore show presented by the band Lift, an exclusive Frank Zappa pressing, and a record store chain trying to become a dispensary.
In this episode we welcome fellow music super fan and podcaster Jamie Mah to chat about some of our favorite concert experiences as well as some new music we're in to. Beers were by Off the Rail, Postmark and Strange Fellows as well as a hazy little IPA from Field house that got us started. Tristan surprises Mick with some dope records from the legendary Amoeba Records in L.A and the podcast 4th wall is broken...it was a sweaty one!
