On The Basis of Morality (1840), Part III: "The Founding of Ethics," Ch. 5: "Statement and Proof of the Only True Moral Incentive." Everything up to this point in the book has been negative: Morality can't be founded on pure reason as Kant thinks, or on the idea of the good life (eudaimonia) per Aristotle. Schopenhauer tells us that all actions are motivated by someone's "weal" or "woe." We are naturally self-interested (motivated by own own weal and woe), but such actions will not be moral. So Schopenhauer's puzzle is: How can I be effectively motivated by someone else's weal and woe? I must somehow identify with that person so that the Other's suffering induces my compassion. This is the only source of moral value. Read along with us, starting on p. 165 (PDF p. 193). You can choose to watch this on video. To get future parts, subscribe at patreon.com/closereadsphilosophy. This lecture discusses the 19th century German Idealist philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's work, On The Basis of Morality, and focuses on his views on the positive or negative moral value of lying. Usually lyric is wrong, because it deprives someone of the truth and leads them to act upon false information. In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff honor Human Rights day in America. Shining a light on issues centuries old, the duo goes in depth with candid thoughts and opinions on the current climate and where everyone can improve. Jeff covers the time honored classic comic book story Days of Future Past from The Uncanny X-Men issues #141 and #142. The realm of Marvel's mutants have always drawn parallels to the civil rights movement, with Professor X and Magneto being heavily influenced by Malcom X and Dr. Martin Luther King. Jeff points out the lack of human rights in both the 1980's setting as well as the 2013 portion of this story, with the heroes being stripped of their rights in both stories based on who they were born as. Did you know? Although the story takes place in a post apocalyptic year 2013, the actual movie adaptation of Days of Future Past was released in 2014. Heather presents her movie second, covering the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic On The Basis of Sex. Heather tells us about her wonder and discovery about the late US supreme court justice, as this movie covers a pivotal potion of Ginsberg's life from the 1950's to 1970's. Paving the way for gender equality and changing the course of history for the better, Heather highlights portion of Ruth's life and the shockwaves that are still being felt to this day. Fun Fact! Ruth Bader Ginsberg founded the Women's Right Project within the ACLU- laying the groundwork for women's right advocacy in America. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as equality, protecting human rights, respect/protect/fulfill, and radical social change. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how X-Men: Days of Future Past, and On The Basis of Sex compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each with some interesting facts and opinions about Human Rights. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy! Heather's Rating of On the Basis of Sex: Super Nice – An extremely informative and inspirational story of an exceptional supreme court justiceJeff's X-Men: Days of Future Past: Super Nice – An amazing and revolutionary story for its time, paving the way for countless time travel stories and also a stand out gem in an already iconic run from writer Chris Clairmount. First up we have the scripted drama, On The Basis of Sex, which focuses on Justice Ruth's earlier years in school and as a professor as she learns to challenge the status quo of the law. Then we discuss the RBG documentary, which covers almost the entire span of Ruth's life and her tireless fight for equality for all genders. Enjoy!
After the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we thought it would be timely to dive into her Netflix doc RBG and also her biopic, On The Basis of Sex. We’ll be discussing how we heard the news, what’s happening now there’s a vacancy on the court and more. Also remember to check your voter registration US listeners!

Welcome to Dissecting This Fiction! It's episode 28, so come join along as my Co-host (Jessica) and I (Steven) go over the latest in movies, tv shows, and games. What's On The Exam Table? In gaming, Borderlands 3 lets you play video games in the name of science! We talk about Sony issuing refunds people may not even want, and discuss features of the PS5 DualSense controller. Google Stadia came around and offered us something for free, and Xbox changed some features to prepare for the next gen launch. Confirmations were made for when CyberPunk 2077 release is happening, and Saints Row 3 had a pretty cool announcement which may or may not involve a purple dildo bat. The ESA finally gave up on any iteration of E3 this year, while their previous marketing team (iam8bit) has teamed up with Button Mash to offer Quarantine Boredom Packs. Jessica offers some insight after playing Totally Reliable Delivery Service, Two Point Hospital, and Death Squared (games new to Game Pass this month). Steven breaks down his experience playing the Resident Evil 3 remake. In TV news, we've got info on Quibi's launch, and an update on Disney plus. Apple TV plus decided to jump on the free stuff bandwagon, and we let you know what they're offering. Disney shifts gears for their mid-tier to smaller budget films, opting to skip theatrical releases on some movies. Doogie Houser is getting a reboot of sorts, with a couple twists. Space Force will take us to total space dominance on Netflix in May, and Tiger King is going to remain the reigning king of all pop culture, with possibly two series in the works. We also watched Episode 8, hosted by Joel McHale. We also give spoiler-free reviews on Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10, but refrained from opening up any spite stores so far. Steven found a show to match the unique interests of someone who likes samurais and cats. We watched a large handful of shows on Quibi and we'll tell you all about the shows in this episode: Most Dangerous Game, Dish-mantled, 50 States of Fright, Agua Donkeys, Flipped, Chrissy's Court, and Survive. We also checked out trailers for upcoming Quibi shows: Reno 911, Barkitecture (yes, it's exactly what it sounds like), and Dummy. For Movies, we watched the trailers for Extraction (Netflix), and The Jack in the Box (VOD). In movies, we discussed where you can find the Simpsons short film which was playing before Onward in theaters, just in case you missed it in theaters (we did!). Speaking of Onward, we've got news on a prequel (kind of), and a board game which will be produced based on that movie. Disney also found another animal musical movie to remake in live-action (this one might get complicated, since they wear clothes). Twitter watch parties are all the rage these days and we got a ton of info on Rocket being more important to Guardians 3, which, by the way doesn't have any date changes (neither does Suicide Squad) as of yet. Space sharks -- are you interested? We are too! Just wait for Thor Love and Thunder, and we have more details released on that too. Scorsese's next film is expected to go to a streaming service again, and we have confirmation a streaming service is interested in Atomic Blonde 2 as well. Birds of Prey changed direction and is now offered for rental instead of only sales, with a much easier price point. My Spy was picked up by a streaming giant but we're not sure when it'll be released. Jessica watched On The Basis of Sex (using our 30 day trial of Showtime!), and both of us lay out our feelings about Harry Potter... erm, we mean Daniel Radcliffe, in his recent movie Guns Akimbo with Samara Weaving. Come join us while we Dissect This Fiction! We are DTF...are you? Happy Thanksgiving to all the ambitious, independent, powerful ladies who are staying true to #HERVOICE, #HERLIFE, #HERPOWER in spite of all the shit we deal with on a consistent basis. To all the strong women - We love you. We admire you. We love watching you kick ass and succeed. On this day, I’m taking a moment to recognize how blessed I am to live in this moment in history, in this country, as a woman. Some of the most basic things we take for granted were still an uphill battle for women just a few decades ago. A brief stroll back in history reveals that women were not allowed to…Get a credit card:In the 1970s, it was illegal for a single woman to get a credit card from the bank. And even a married woman would need the signature of her husband to open up on account. Talk about the impossibility of achieving financial independence! Wear bikinis:In the 1920s, many local governments issued standards for women’s bathing suits that prohibited them from showing too much leg on public beaches (too much leg?! Never) with law enforcement patrolling beaches with measuring tape. Women who insisted on wearing something other than an ankle-length potato sack were asked to change; defiant female bathers could be arrested. Take birth control: In the 1950s, women’s reproductive freedom and her right to decide when and whether to have children were only just beginning to be openly discussed. In 1957, the FDA approved of the birth control pill but only for "severe menstrual distress." Then, a 1965 Supreme Court ruling approved birth control but only for married woman, and #allthesingleladies were still denied the right to use oral contraceptives in 26 states. In 1972, the Supreme Court finally overturned a Massachusetts law that made distributing birth control to singles illegal. #FIGHTFORTHESINGLELADIESWork while pregnant:Up until 1964, maternity leave was considered permanent. Employers were under no obligation to retain workers who got pregnant, and as many as 40% of businesses took advantage of the lack of laws. Women carrying children didn’t have complete protection and access to benefits until the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. We love you working mamas!Get an Ivy League education: As a Yalie, this still pisses me off. Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and the other elites claimed to chose only “the best and the brightest.” Somehow not a single woman qualified. They barred their doors to half the population, not because of inferior IQs, grades or test scores, but simply because of gender. Except for Cornell, the first Ivy didn't admit women until 1977. The reason given? The Ivies would have to lower their standards to admit women. Yes, that was the argument. Practice law: Even if a woman had gone through all the years of school and passed every test, she could still be denied the right to plead a client’s case until 1971. No wonder the laws have been such bullshit. Laws for women can’t change if we don’t actually have women in the courtroom! Side note: watch the RBG Movie, On The Basis of Sex if you haven’t yet. I cried at the end, rewinded it, and cried again, her victory was that moving. … There’s much more, but these stood out to me. This is all to say, that while there is still a long road ahead, we are blessed! I hope you take time to not only celebrate your friends and family, but also to remember the many women who have come before us who have courageously fought for the progress in equality we have made today. We are finally back to our old format... with Dhani talking about all of the things she has watched. However, this week, she has to make up for the last 4 weeks of not producing a podcast, so she has a lot to cover! First, she talks about On The Basis of Sex and the pure awesomeness of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Next, Dhani talks about the Netflix movies Someone Great and Unicorn Store. While they were both about the process of growing up and change, she preferred the story of Someone Great more. However both are enjoyable. Moving on to a documentary of YouTubePremium called Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story. Since Dhani is a superfan of *NSync, she really appreciated the insight gained from this behind the scenes doc. And finally, both John and Dhani watched the Netflix documentary Knock Down the House. This focuses on 4 women running for Congress in 2018 and following their grass roots campaigns. Moving on to TV, Dhani wanted to visit some shows that have ended that she highly recommends. These are Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and You're The Worst. She was happy with the way both shows ended. Then Dhani talks about the second season of Cobra Kai on YouTubePremium and how much she truly loves this show! Being a fan of The Karate Kid, she is truly in heaven watching Johnny and Daniel battle again. Next Dhani talks about the Hulu show The Act. This is the story of DeeDee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The show is good, but she recommends the documentary about this story first, called Mommy Dead and Dearest. We next discuss a new Netflix show called Dead To Me with Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. They are so fantastic in this show and while it wasn't what Dhani thought it was, she loved it and hopes for a second season. Finally Dhani felt the need to address the cancellation of Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix. She loved the show so much and just wanted to let people know that it is still worth checking out what's streaming even though there won't be anymore. In the Actors' Studio we chose Drew Barrymore this week. So we list the movies we love, like, hate, secretly love, haven't seen and want to watch. Join Caroline Wilson and Corrie Perkin for Ep 72 - 'You're Shameless!'. We check in with our 'Goal of the Month' pledges and review a big week of celebrations (including a Hen's Night, Brian Cook's star studded 30th dinner and the Do Re Mi reunion). After the Morrison government experienced an historic loss in parliament yesterday we discuss the ramifications for Bill Shorten ahead of the next election and we look into the sacking of Matildas coach Alen Stajcic. Corrie's Valentine's Day inspired "Crush of the Week" is former judge Michael Kirby. In "BSF" Caro's recommending not one but three movies Vice, On The Basis of Sex and Green Book, Corrie's been reading Chloe Hooper's The Arsonist and with a nod to Tony Mokbel - Caro shares her favourite new zucchini recipe (see recipe below). The ratings success of Married At First Sight is making Caro more than a little grumpy this week and in "6 Quick Questions" we debate the essence of pesto, talk Barnaby Joyce and Wallace Stegner and get a little excited about John B Fairfax investing in a new investigative arm of Crikey. To wrap things up Corrie shares a slightly unconventional "GLT" for anyone battling with a testy toddler. Crushed Courgettes (Zucchini) from Yottam Ottolenghi’s Simple. 3 large courgettes, cut in half lengthways, then into 6cm pieces (850g) 1 tsp dried mint 5g picked thyme leaves 70 ml olive oil 1 whole head of garlic, separated into unpeeled cloves 2 tbsp chopped mint leaves 1 ½ tbsp chopped dill 1 tbsp lemon juice Salt and black pepper Pre heat the oven to 200C fan Place the courgettes in a bowl with the dried mint, thyme, oil, ¾ teaspoon of salt and some black pepper. Mix, then transfer to a medium baking dish: you want the courgettes to form a single layer, cut side up and sitting slightly overlapping. Bake for 15 minutes, then add the garlic cloves and bake for another 15 minutes, until the courgettes have softened and taken on some colour. Transfer everything to a colander (set over a bowl or the sink), pressing the courgettes so that they start to release some of their liquid. Set aside to cool for at least 30 minutes, discarding the liquid released. Transfer the contents of the colander to a mixing bowl and squeeze the garlic cloves out of their skins (which can then be discarded). Mash everything together with a fork: if the skin of the courgettes is still a little touch, just use a knife to roughly chop them. Stir in the mint leaves, dill and lemon juice to serve. It's another Derek and Myke catch up episode! We had so much to say last week about the movies we've watched that it spilled over to this episode. California's also on fire again, so we definitely can't help but talk about that and then we get into 'A Star Is Born' for the majority of the episode. Derek does talk about seeing "On The Basis of Sex" and Myke talks about "The Haunting of Hill House". Its another classic TGF episode! Caring Across Generationsis an organization, a movement, that believes that planning for long-term care is not just personal. It's political. According to their website, 70% of people over 65 are going to need some form of long term care for an average of three years. With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, thats A LOT of care. They are on a mission to bring the infrastructure of caregiving into the 21st century. And God knows it needs it! Janet Kim, the communications director for the organization says that this is one of the biggest problems that will shape us as a culture. The group believes that sharing stories and connecting is critical to promoting policy change. And they are doing that. The goals of Caring Across Generationsare: expanding choices for care and improving affordability providing more support for family caregivers making sure that care jobs are good jobs with wages that professional caregivers can live on Janet suggests a couple of documentaries regarding care: On The Basis of Sex Care She also suggests finding out what is going on in your state to address the issues surrounding this important topic. So listen to this episode. And get involved. Because it's going to affect you in one way or another. You should have an opinion about this. And have your voice heard.
