Curious? Take The Free Money Stress Quiz!Ready? Buy Our Simplified Budget System Now!We know paying off debt can feel like the urgent, obvious first step. But in this episode, Shana and Vanessa are flipping that script a little.Because here's the truth: if we attack debt without savings buckets, spending accounts, and a real plan for upcoming expenses, we're probably going to end up right back on the credit card. This episode is all about creating the kind of budget system that actually supports real life. We're talking about spending accounts, savings buckets, debt payoff, single mom budgeting, and why there is no one-size-fits-all plan for your money. Before we get aggressive with debt, we need to make sure our budget is actually working. That means getting everything on paper, separating our spending, and knowing what money is for bills, what money is for everyday spending, and what money needs to be saved for things coming up.Savings buckets are not optional fluff. They are what help us stop relying on credit cards when life happens. Christmas, birthdays, property taxes, vacations, kids' activities, travel, and repairs are not surprises if we know they're coming.Debt payoff does not have to be all or nothing. Sometimes we pay extra on debt, sometimes we pause to save for an upcoming expense, and sometimes we do both at the same time. The goal is to stop the cycle for good.A spending account can be simple. For some of us, it might be one account to start. For others, it might be separate accounts for groceries, eating out, personal spending, and kids. The best system is the one we'll actually use.Financial coaching helps take the guesswork out of all of this. Having someone look at the numbers with us, build the system with us, and help us make the next right decision can bring so much clarity and relief.Let's Take Our Relationship To The Next Level:1️⃣ Facebook Group ➡︎ budgetbesties.com/facebook2️⃣ Be on the Podcast ➡︎ budgetbesties.com/livecall3️⃣ Private 1-on-1 Coaching. ➡︎ budgetbesties.com/coachingThis podcast is for educational and informational purposes only and is not personal financial, legal, or tax advice. This description may contain affiliate links, meaning we may get a commission at no cost to you if you click & purchase.Click here to view our privacy policy.

It's (not) the end, but the moment has been prepared for! Well, not as such but a press release from the BBC confirms what we long suspected: there will not be a Christmas special nor were plans for one ever seriously pursued. Sad news to be sure, but we've cobbled together industry and wider fan reaction along with our own lengthy takes tinged with what we'd like to think is both optimism and realism. More importantly, we have former Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury to give us his rather more informed take on the whole situation. "Your bank wants to get paid before you get paid." On a standard 30-year mortgage, 87% of every dollar paid in year one goes directly to the bank as interest. It takes until year 21 before more than half of each payment builds equity. Most homeowners never question this, but the structure is designed to maximize what the bank collects, not what the borrower keeps. Jaspreet Singh breaks down three strategies to pay off a 30-year mortgage years ahead of schedule, without needing a windfall. Using a $437,000 home with a $350,000 mortgage at 7% as the working example throughout. In this episode, you'll learn: Why making 13 mortgage payments a year instead of 12 either by paying half the monthly amount every two weeks, or by adding one-twelfth of the payment to each monthly bill, pays off the mortgage 5 years sooner and saves over $90,000 in interest with no lifestyle change How additional payments of $200, $500, or $2,500 per month accelerate payoff by 6, 12, or 23 years respectively and why every extra dollar must be applied to the principal balance, not the next scheduled payment, for this to work What mortgage recasting is and why most people have never heard of it: after making a lump sum payment of $5,000–$10,000, the bank recalculates the monthly payment downward. So paying the original amount means more goes to principal automatically, without refinancing or changing the rate Why recasting beats refinancing in a high-rate environment: the loan term, interest rate, and lender all stay the same. Only the monthly payment drops, making it a low-cost way to accelerate payoff after any lump sum, whether from a bonus, tax refund, or inheritance Keywords: pay off mortgage early, mortgage recasting, biweekly mortgage payments, amortization schedule, principal payments, 30-year mortgage, home equity, mortgage payoff strategy, interest savings, financial freedom Want more financial news? Dan Ariely: The Predictably Irrational Misbelief of Fitting In: YOU'VE NEVER HEARD DAN LIKE THIS BEFORE! A note before we begin: This episode discusses burn trauma, end-of-life decisions, the death of a parent, and a moment when our guest reflects on whether his own life was worth living. If any of it lands hard, please pause and reach out to someone you trust. What happens when the man who spent forty years mapping human self-deception must apply his own tools to his own pain, his own dying mother, and the moment he had to decide whether his life had been worth the burn? If you are a fan of Dan Ariely there's a good chance that you're familiar with his brilliant work. But do you know the man? . In this conversation Dan opens up about things he's never spoken about in interviews before... For three decades, Dan Ariely has been one of the most quoted behavioral scientists alive. Three New York Times bestsellers. A television series loosely based on his life. Research that has shaped government policy across continents. He has taught millions of people one brutal truth: we are not irrationally random. We are irrational in patterns, and the higher the stakes, the more sophisticated the story we tell ourselves becomes. . This episode is not behavioral economics from behind a podium. It is what happens when the cartographer of human blind spots sits down to be looked at, not by an interviewer, but by another man who has been smashed and rebuilt by his own catastrophic event. . Dan was burned across seventy percent of his body when he was almost eighteen. He spent close to three years in hospitals. For the first eighteen months, he says, there was no tomorrow. There was only pain. And until the age of fifty, if he could have gone back to day one of his injury knowing everything that came after, the three books, the awards, the family, the influence, he would have turned the machines off. He says it on this recording, plainly, without performance. That single answer is the heart of this conversation. . Then Dan tells Dov what changed at fifty. He tells the story of becoming his own mother's end-of-life doula during the 2025 Israel-Iran war, the question she asked him about cremation that he never connected to his own burns, and the psilocybin journey where the fire spoke back. Inside this conversation: The single domain where every demographic regrets not taking more risk, and the Wall Street investor who proved why most of us never will The Samuelson coin-flip parable that explains why people who treat life as one bet at a time are quietly destroying it The flush-toilet experiment that exposes why your confidence is a more dangerous lie than your knowledge The cyclist who became a drug dealer one small justification at a time, and the question Dan asks himself before every decision to escape the same slope The biblical concept of shibboleth, and why most of what you think is political argument in 2026 is a tribal identity test in disguise If you came here for tidy answers about decision-making, you are on the wrong podcast. Michael breaks down why your 30-year mortgage is costing you hundreds of thousands in unnecessary interest, how most homeowners can pay off their home in 5 to 7 years using a strategy banks quietly use themselves, and why nobody in the industry ever told you this existed. If you own a home or plan to buy one, this is the most important financial conversation you'll hear all year.

In a conversation with Alison Nathan and George Lee on Goldman Sachs Exchanges, Covello discusses where we've seen economic value accrue to date and why semiconductor companies can't continue to be the sole beneficiaries of the AI buildout. As Trump puts a blue Texas in reach, Harry talks with Jonathan Alter, David A. Graham, and Senator Heidi Heitkamp to discuss the fall's premier Senate race and the latest outrages from the DOJ. Should Democrats go all out to beat scandal-plagued Ken Paxton? Or does an obsession with Texas distract from other, less flashy pickup chances elsewhere? Can Trump's “self-deal steal” survive sudden gusts of political and legal headwinds? And why is the DOJ now reportedly targeting E. Paying off your mortgage before retirement sounds responsible. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it quietly costs you the best years of your life.In this episode, James walks through the story of a client who delayed retirement for five extra years just to eliminate an $1,800 monthly mortgage payment. On paper, the decision looked smart. Her portfolio grew, her expenses dropped, and everything became more “secure.” But the years she gave up were the healthiest and most active years of her retirement. The deeper issue is that many people focus on the balance sheet instead of the cash flow. The real question is not whether you still have a mortgage. It is whether your retirement income can comfortably support the payment alongside everything else you want your life to include.James also explains the risks that do come with carrying debt into retirement, including sequence of return risk and the pressure a fixed mortgage payment can place on a portfolio during market downturns. The answer is not one size fits all. It depends on your withdrawal rate, reserves, and overall plan.Because retirement planning is not just about maximizing wealth on paper. It is about making sure you do not sacrifice years you can never get back in pursuit of a goal that may not actually improve your life.--Advisory services are offered through Root Financial Partners, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. Listen to learn the emotional impact of revealing secrets vs discovering them. In this episode Stu, Chas and Mel apply the Landmark–Hidden–Secret framework (from DZ-126) across two very different genres: the thriller SIDE EFFECTS (2013) and the tragicomic pilot of SHRINKING. SIDE EFFECTS is a film of two genres. The first half plays as a drama about depression and over-medication; the second half is a 90s thriller. We talk about how every time Dr Jonathan Banks uncovers a new piece of information, it puts him in danger — and that danger motivates him to uncover more. In SHRINKING, we see a different use of the framework. "What are psychologists but detectives of the mind?" Rather than the cost of finding secrets, it's about the cost of sharing them. Chas also comes out of this with a paradigm he's been building toward (but we're keeping what that is secret until you listen!) And inevitably we go on some tangents: whether SIDE EFFECTS should even have been an erotic thriller! Every pastor says they want honest feedback, but do their actions back that up? In this episode, Scott and A.J. walk through three clear signs that a pastor or any church leader may have a blind spot when it comes to receiving input, from defensive reactions to punishing the messenger to making decisions in a complete vacuum. If you have ever felt like bringing feedback to your leader is more trouble than it is worth, this episode will help you name what you are seeing. Scott Ball and A.J. #714: When you're making big financial decisions, what matters more: optimizing for the best long-term outcome, or choosing the path that gives you the most flexibility and peace of mind right now? Melissa retired early and now lives off rental income, but she's considering selling one property to pay off another. The catch? Her monthly income would stay about the same—so the real question is whether giving up future appreciation is worth the simplicity and stability today. Von is trying to better understand how real estate returns actually work—specifically, whether cap rates tell the full story for multifamily properties, or whether there's more going on beneath the surface. Layla is planning to retire at 50 and has built a strong portfolio—but she's wondering if she's leaned too heavily into Roth accounts. Should she keep maximizing a mega backdoor Roth at a high tax rate, or shift toward a taxable brokerage to better bridge the early retirement years? We'll get into all of that—the tradeoffs, the assumptions behind them, and how to think through each decision.
