Dr. Laura welcomes Dr. Malissa Clark, an associate professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Georgia, about workaholism and her upcoming book, “Never Not Working: Why the Always-On Culture is Bad for Business - and How to Fix It”. Dr. Clark defines modern day workaholism, and explains why it's so detrimental to both individuals and businesses. There is an aspect of workaholism that's “like water to a fish”, according to Malissa Clark, which is that we are so immersed in work that we simply don't notice it. She works to define workaholism and breaks it down into four main components: behavioral, motivational, emotional, and cognitive. Dr. Clark unpacks each of the components, which are detailed in her book, and talks about the research, interviews, and thoughts that she drew upon when writing “Never Not Working”. This episode dovetails nicely with the focus on remote and hybrid work that Dr. Laura focuses on, bringing work wellness and health into the forefront of discussion.“...we synthesized all of the research on the relationship between level of workaholism and performance ratings. And we basically find no relationship. And that is including if they were rating themselves or the bosses were rating their performance… my research and other people's research continually shows over and over again that not only do we not find that relationship… but we find that workaholism is related to a whole host of other detrimental outcomes, such as workaholics tend to be sometimes not the best coworkers and bosses for a variety of reasons.” Dr. Malissa ClarkAbout Dr. Malissa Clark:Malissa Clark is an associate professor of industrial/organizational (I-O) psychology at the University of Georgia, where she has been on faculty since 2013. Currently, Clark serves as associate head of the department of psychology and director of the Healthy Work Lab. She is a recognized expert on the topics of workaholism, overwork, burnout, and employee well-being.Clark earned her Ph.D. in I-O psychology from Wayne State University, and her B.A. in organizational studies from the University of Michigan. She has received awards for her writing and mentoring, and her work has been funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). In 2023, Clark was named a Fellow of SIOP, a status that recognizes unusual and outstanding contributions that have an important impact on I-O psychology. Her first book, Never Not Working: Why the Always-On Culture Is Bad for Business—and How to Fix It, launches in February 2024. Clark's work has been published in premier outlets such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. She serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology and as action editor for Journal of Business and Psychology and Occupational Health Science. This is the last episode in our mini-series on Coping Skills to Calm your Nerves and Retrain your Brain. Our final episode happens to be airing on Halloween, so I felt led to discuss the power of worship and shifting the atmosphere in our hearts, home, and workplace. Worship is a weapon. Worship releases worry. Worship shifts the environment. Worship sends the enemy running.  Ways to worship: Praise and worship. Even if you can't sing it, let it play quietly in the background. Words as worship. Thank God throughout the day. Actions as worship. What do you spend the most time and energy worshipping? Dance, workout, work, whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God. So far in The Coping Series, we have discussed bilateral stimulation, verbal and written processing, and exercise to calm your nervous system and reign in the runaway brain. Please go back and listen if you missed any of those episodes. In this episode, we are discussing a coping skill that is a God-given way to cope with mental and emotional stress - Bible verse meditation. Damage is done when people receive the message “If you would just pray more…” or “Here is a Bible verse.” Let's look at both sides of this coin. To the person giving the advice: Remember, this recipient is hurting. Listen first. Express empathy. Pray for them (no need to share you're praying unless you feel led to). If you do bring up a verse, be sure it's thoughtful and not condemning. To the person receiving: If the takeaway message is full of shame, remember that's not from God. Whether the person did or didn't intend to relay that message, you get to choose what you receive. God's word and prayer are the most powerful coping tools we have been given. It's just like the enemy to twist words so we pull back from something that could help. It's not an either/or when it comes to mental health. It's a both/and. Jesus heals and God's Word comforts, and sometimes we also need professional help, and that's ok. Extend grace to yourself and others. So far in our new mini-series on coping Skills to calm your nerves and retrain your brain we have discussed bilateral stimulation and verbal and written processing to calm your nervous system and reign in the runaway brain. Please go back and listen if you missed either of those episodes. This week we are reclaiming territory on a coping skill that is a God-given way to cope with mental and emotional stress - exercise. Benefits of Exercise Regular exercise can have a positive impact on depression, anxiety, and ADHD. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. Exercise is a powerful depression fighter for several reasons. Most importantly, it promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being.  Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment. It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances well-being by releasing endorphins.  Since the body and mind are so closely linked, when your body feels better so will your mind. Evidence suggests that by really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise, you can actually help your nervous system become “unstuck” and begin to move out of the immobilization stress response that characterizes PTSD or trauma.  Practical Tips to Add Exercise Diversity is key.  Go for a walk and talk to God, a friend, or your spouse Make it enjoyable. Be a kid again. Examples: trampoline, jump rope, dice games, ride bikes, collect shells on the beach, go for a hike Skip the elevator and take the stairs Park at the back of the parking lot Go to Costo with no list Walk during your lunch break or while your child is at soccer practice Call it your “get to,” not a “have to" Submit it to the Lord. Since our body is His temple, let's ask Him to show us How to move in love. Your body needs to move but LISTEN to it. Years of silencing our bodies cause us not to trust what it needs. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Resources:Pre-order Image RESTored The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise download Connect with Rachael: website | Instagram | Facebook

Today, Ed is joined by Dr. Briana Nelson Goff, a professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences at Kansas State University. Her clinical experience and research specialization is with primary and secondary traumatic stress symptoms in trauma survivor couples, families, and children, with a specific focus on military and disaster-related traumatic events. Listen in as Dr. Goff does a deep dive into her work and research around trauma and PTSD, particularly in relation to military families. She and Ed discuss the delicate balancing act between self-sacrificial duty to others and looking out for one's own mental wellbeing. They also speak on the journey from awareness of trauma, to the validation of that trauma in one's life, to the actual work of behavioral change once that trauma has been validated. Ultimately, Dr. Goff says that our mental health journey is not solely in the hands of a professional, that we need to take agency over our own mental wellbeing. At the same time, strong, supportive relationships are a big factor in strengthening our mental health for the long haul. In her words: “Don't keep it in. Get help somewhere. It doesn't have to be a mental health person. If you've had a bad situation, reach out. Get the support that you need. Find your tribe. Find the people who care and bring them with you on your journey.” Key Topics: The scope of Dr. Goff's work on trauma (03:19) Military families and PTSD (11:24) Balancing mental health and self-sacrifice as a first responder (16:26) Protective buffering and the family model of trauma (22:20) Military families and money (30:58) Money and trauma (35:56) About EMDR therapy (39:44) Dr. Goff's closing thoughts and words of encouragement (44:04) Resources: Pre-sale info on Dr. Goff's coming book: In Love and War Dr. Goff's contact and info Healthy Love and Money Resources: Healthy Love and Money Website The Couples Guide to Financial Intimacy Healthy Love and Money Facebook Healthy Love and Money Instagram Healthy Love and Money LinkedIn The Healthy Love & Money Way: How the Four Attachment Styles Impact Your Financial Well-Being (book) Stop Fighting & Start Talking: Gaining Peace and Perspective on Family Finances (book)

We are in a new mini-series on coping skills to calm your nerves and retrain your brain. In the last episode, I introduced the concept of bilateral stimulation to calm your nervous system and reign in the runaway brain. Please go back and listen if you missed it because I will reference that more throughout this series. This week I want to bring up the most underrated coping skill - verbal and written processing. Why processing through journaling or talking is powerful: It gets it up and out. If you can't talk about it, it owns you. When we stuff emotions, they find their way out somewhere. Bottling up your emotions can drain your physical energy. Your organs, tissues, muscles, endocrine glands, and skin are receptive to your emotional experiences, causing memories to be stored in your brain and your body. It helps you spot inaccurate thoughts. Sometimes just saying or writing it, we recognize it's not true. It lets God and trusted loved ones into our struggle. It grows our faith to look back on old journal entries and see how God took what the enemy meant for evil and turn it for good. Here are 3 ways you can healthily process thoughts and emotions, plus a practical tip to implement each: Pray. In other words, talk to God. Practical tip: Talk to God throughout your day. In the car, showering, walking, cooking, or folding laundry. Seek wise counsel (a counselor or a trusted friend who won't judge)  Practical tip: How to be someone a friend can process with in a healthy way: Ask, “do you want me to listen or give feedback?” Be slow to give advice. Most people just need a listening ear and a hug. Keep their information safe. The quickest way to break a relationship is to reveal information that isn't yours to share. Expressive writing - AKA JournalPractical tip: Try bullet point journaling, writing a note on your phone, put it in a Word document, add dates to reflect, use a coloring book that makes you happy and write shorthand notes on the sheets, or use a journaling Bible. This week's guest, Kristen Schwartz from @realizedempath, guides empaths and highly sensitive people (HSP's) with tools to feel safe, secure, and seen in an overstimulated world that often deems sensitivity as a weakness. You guys know how I feel about sensitivity -- it is actually a superpower! And we get into that in this conversation.  Kristen has created a beautiful platform that articulates what so many of us feel but perhaps have not found the words to express. The good news is that we are not alone! There are so many empaths and highly sensitive people in the world, and this personality type is often linked to deep intuition and those who are seers, psychics, creatives, healers, coaches, and beyond. Kristen outlines a roadmap that allows us to clear out the emotional debris, own your truth and harness your sensitivity as a superpower.  Kristen has been there. Six years ago, a dark night of the soul pushed her edge. She went inward, strengthened her internal trust muscle, set strict boundaries, and transcended from tragedy to triumph. Now she's a shining light for others and has birthed her first book: The Healed Empath.  Her blend of psychology, science, and a dash of magic is guaranteed to inspire you to create space in your life for better boundaries, energy protection, and the emotional freedom to shine as YOU! Alyson Charles is an internationally renowned shaman and educator, best-selling author, and podcast host of Ceremony Circle. Today she's here to discuss her new book, Animal Power:100 Animals to Energize Your Life and Awaken Your Soul, that's been four years (and many lifetimes) in the making. I'm so proud to walk this earth path with such an embodied and evolved being. Today's conversation elevated my reverence for her as a majestic being who can traverse multiple dimensions and species in a way I have never seen or experienced before.  Alyson opens up about the exhilarating and exhausting journey of birthing a book in co-creation with the animal kingdom and the 100 contributors (myself included) who each imparted their connection with a specific species. Each animal's spirit is beautifully brought to life by Willian Santiago – and it happens to be his last visual imprint in this realm.  We delve into the significance of Alyson's power animals (which assisted her in her awakening). She shares how you can tap into the powerful teachings of the animal kingdom and unearth the unique messages they're trying to get through to you. For those who don't get to witness her at her altar every day, Alyson will close the chat with a live animal calling and reading – a sure-fire way to activate animal energy and bring it into your day, and – hopefully, after tuning in to this episode – your life.  You can pre-order your copy of Animal Power now by heading to alysoncharles.com/animalpower, where you'll also be gifted a guided shamanic animal journey and a sneak peek inside the book's magic. When we do find time for ourselves, it's frequently filled with noise from technology. More often than not, we are not resting well , reflecting, and connecting with ourselves. Rod Stryker joins us once again to talk about the importance of creating spaciousness in our lives. As a yoga and meditation teacher, Rod explains the significance of honoring our human need for resting well. And for those who feel like they're too busy to be resting well, Rod shares some workarounds and bio-hacks to conquer that challenge. Episode Highlights How Spaciousness Allows for Resting Well Life in the industrial world, especially with technology, isn't conducive to the nervous system. We have disconnected from the body's four basic rhythms: the circadian rhythm, sleep-wake cycles, and rest and activity cycles. Every 90 minutes, our bodies are meant to rest. When we slow down, we also become bored. Boredom is critical to autobiographical planning, which is when our brains slowly begin to unwind and self-reflect. This process creates spaciousness in our minds, and allows us to be more present and embodied. Creating Spaciousness in a Busy Life Using bio-hacks, you can create spaciousness even in your busy life. Simply shifting from a narrow to a wide view can trigger your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest. You can also follow the Pomodoro method. When you take short breaks, you allow your brain to go into exploratory mode. You'll find it easier to work afterward. In resting well, it also helps to watch what you do in the last 30 minutes before you go to sleep. You need to be willing to step away from your responsibilities in your waking state and step into the mystery that is sleep. What Happens When You Sleep Rod explains sleep in terms of Yoga. As we extract ourselves from the physical, mental, intellectual dimensions, we move towards consciousness. Consciousness is self-organizing, which means that as you approach it, you start to heal on all other levels. Rod says that in sleep, we're on the precipice of consciousness. We experience what Yogis call a floating delight. In sleep, the body also enters a self-organizing state where it repairs and regenerates. However, when we wake up, we have to reconstruct who we were before sleep. Unlike sleep, meditation offers an opportunity to choose how much of the “old you” you want to keep. How to Deal with Pain in the Waking State We humans prefer the familiar as opposed to the unfamiliar. We'd often prefer familiar pain to the unfamiliar cure. When we sleep or meditate, life seems harsher because we compare it to the peace and spaciousness that sleep and meditation provides. The solution to this challenge is creating spaciousness and separation, and interrupting cycles of hyperarousal. During the pandemic, teenagers experienced mental health problems the most. That's because they haven't experienced enough difficulties to know that they'll be okay. Stepping away from your grief or loss reminds you that other things continue to endure. Becoming More Conscious When you're focused on yourself, you're in subject referral. Object referral is when you pay attention to things outside of yourself. We switch between subject and object referral all the time, but neither depict reality. To smooth out the harshness of reality and achieve clarity, try to walk the line between subject and object referral. Consciousness is in subject and in object, but is transcendent to both. The Power and Grace of Present Moment Perception Rod recounted how years ago, his two children got very sick and were brought to a hospital by a life flight. He thought that if he wanted to be of service to his family, he needed to tap into the power and grace of moment perception by moving towards his consciousness. Although it was a difficult process, Rob was able to access spaciousness and handle the situation well. Parting Words Rod recounted how years ago, his two children got very sick and were brought to a hospital by a life flight. And then we begin to work more in sync with the nervous system and what it really does want.” [24:28] “We don't give ourselves the opportunity to have that patience because we've been so desensitized to being bored, to being patient because everything happens so quickly. We've sort of primed ourselves to having this instant gratification.” [27:23] “We prefer the familiar, as opposed to the unfamiliar. And we would actually, in most cases, prefer the familiar even if it's painful than the unfamiliar even if it has the promise of being less painful.” [35:13] “The idea is you practice awareness through the course of your life. You remember that you're neither your feelings and your thoughts, nor are you what the world seems to be doing.” About Rod Rod Stryker is a world-renowned yoga and meditation teacher and the founder of ParaYogaⓇ. We also get to hear some hilarious stories about Terry's first gigs and countless anecdotes from his life as a musician. Enjoy the conversation!  “Songwriting is a strange process. He is the CEO of The Hollis Company, and husband to Rachel Hollis, the famous author of the books Girl, Wash Your Face and Girl, Stop Apologizing. Before he joined Rachel in building The Hollis Company, he had an incredible career in publicity, talent management, marketing and brand management, mostly in the motion pictures industry for some of the biggest companies in the world.   Dave and Rachel have four kids, and yet they still find a way to run one of the largest self-development brands in the world. We’re going to do a deep dive into how they make that work, how they keep their relationship and being a great parent a priority, while having this explosive growth.   Question Highlights:  Tell me about the moment where you had to choose to pursue your personal development?  What are the one or two actions or beliefs that you had to change in that moment? What is the key to being a really great partner to a very powerful woman? Are there times you ever feel like Rachel Hollis’ husband instead of the person you are yourself? What are some of the hacks and non-negotiables that you’ve installed to protect your role as lovers and parents first? What is it like being on the other side of one of the most recognizable self-help brands? What are the most common lies that hold us back?   Guest Bio: Dave Hollis serves as the CEO of The Hollis Company where he chases audacious dreams with his partner and CCO, the extraordinary NY Times Best-Selling author, motivational speaker and world-changer Rachel Hollis.   The Hollis Company is built around the belief that everybody is made for more. It exists to arm people from every background with the tools to change their life for the better. Our content is a mix of encouragement, authentic truth-telling and tangible direction to make lasting change. We create tools and foster community to help people grow in their relationships, businesses, sense of self, and opportunities to impact others.   The Hollis Co measures success in impact: how can the media, live events and merchandise we produce create real and lasting life change? The company lives in these lanes and it’s where the family of existing brands will continue to thrive.   Outside of The Hollis Co, Dave is a member of the Motion Picture Academy and sits on the membership committee, serves on an innovation board called Fandango Labs, as well as the board of Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers, the board of foster care charity Austin Angels and the board of Pepperdine's Institute for Entertainment, Media and Culture.   Dave believes in the importance of variety in a career as a prerequisite for considering any candidate -- his myriad jobs in Research, Publicity, Talent Management, Grassroots Marketing, Brand Management, Retail Strategy, Technology Innovation and Sales has rounded his expertise and affords an informed, solution-oriented macro view of any business.   Dave is the father of four children, an adoptive father and four-time foster dad. As a family, the Hollis’ support philanthropy in the foster care and the teen/transitional homelessness space. They live and operate their business out of Austin, TX. Recovery, Success, Business, Invention, Innovation   Summary While all individuals are different, there seems to be one determining factor when it comes to those who invent truly life-enhancing products. We'll look at that in our Thought of the Day. And in our interview segment, we'll speak with Cherie Mathews, an entrepreneur who embodies that determining factor. Her story is inspiring and fascinating. That and more on today's show. Bob's Thought of the Day We'll explore: The thought that the most ultra-successful creations have typically been by those less money-motivated and more mission-generated. How the founder of the Bose Corporation became a billionaire by solving a problem rather than chasing money. Why passion before profits typically equals more in profits. Interview with Cherie Mathews You'll discover: How and why Cherie invented a post-operative garment for women (and men) who are recovering from breast cancer. How Cherie began with a $1,000 investment to help 100 patients in Austin, and has now helped 15,000 patients. Why everyone should be an inventor. My guest today is Rich German, who is a bestselling author, speaker, and business/lifestyle coach.  He has conducted over 18,000 individual coaching sessions and co-founded the JV Insider Circle.  With its focus on joint ventures, the JV Insider Circle is a powerful community that helps speakers, authors, and coaches grow their businesses.  Each year they host a live event called JVX, a three-day experience, which helps cultivate relationships geared towards building lasting joint ventures.  Rich’s first two books, Living the Law of Attraction and Monetize Your Passion, are content-rich books that help people improve their lives and financial situations.  Rich has a passion for helping entrepreneurs cultivate a life that allows them to take care of their own mind, body, and spirit, and to enjoy the things they are most passionate about.  Rich teaches what he knows to be true--it is possible to create a lifestyle that you love. Rich has a love for the ocean and the creatures that live in it.  Years ago Rich made spending time on his paddleboard a priority.  He has structured his life in a way that he is able to spend hours a day interacting with the dolphins and whales that call Laguna Beach, California their home.  On a whim he started taking pictures and then video, and posting them on his Facebook page.  (Check out his images here.)  His photos are breathtaking!  His time on the water has given him a mission to restore, protect, and sustain the ocean.  He created Project O, with a short-term goal of raising awareness through art, film, outreach activities, and media coverage.  The long-term goal of Project O is to help change laws in order to protect the oceans.  Rich has compiled 95 of his most amazing images into a beautiful new coffee-table book called Blue Laguna.  The sale of his new book will help fund Project O’s mission of protecting the ocean for our generation and generations to come.   Connect with Rich German: Pre-order Rich’s book here to help support his work through Project O.Rich GermanJV Insider CircleFind Rich on Facebook In this episode: [02:55] - Rich talks about how his new book came to be. [15:33] - He tells us why it is important to him to approach activism from a place of love instead of a place of fear. [16:32] - Rich tells of his determination to set up a lifestyle that gave him time to pursue his passions, particularly his love for the ocean.  He gets into how his focus on collaboration, working together to create a better result, influenced his decision to create his own foundation versus joining one that already existed. [19:37] - Rich tells us why he is not the guy to talk about the pros and cons of setting up a 501(c)(3). [20:30] - We talk about how burnout played a role in Rich leaving the coaching company he was working for and creating the JV Insider Circle and the JVX Experience. [24:26] - Rich reminds us that when he created his company, he looked first at what kind of lifestyle he wanted, then created a business to satisfy those needs. [27:32] - Rich explains why solopreneurs, people who generally work from home and alone, especially need avenues to build relationships, support, and partnerships in their business. [28:13] - We learn how Rich was able to leverage his time by moving from one-on-one coaching to building a community that is six hundred-to-one and in the process taking his income up five to ten times. [30:00] - Rich talks about creating his million-dollar JV Insider Circle by continually niching down until he was only solving one problem, teaching people how to do joint ventures. [32:15] - We chat about the power of being focused.  Stephan gives a great exercise in being focused that comes from Warren Buffett.  Read more about that here.
