Whether it's selling a business after decades or facing an unexpected layoff, grace is crucial for making thoughtful and impactful decisions.   Transform Challenges into Opportunities: Ivana highlighted that even the toughest situations (like dealing with PTSD from past trauma) can be catalysts for growth. The Benefits of Target Date Funds - A Guide to Retirement Investing Information about Anne can be found online: https://annelester.com 3 Bullet Points with Takeaways - Target date funds are an effective retirement investment option, especially for those who prefer a hands-off approach to managing their portfolios. - These funds follow a "glide path" that gradually shifts the allocation from high-risk assets (like stocks) to lower-risk assets (like bonds) as the investor approaches retirement age. - By simplifying investment decisions, target date funds help individuals avoid emotional pitfalls and achieve a balanced, diversified, and more reliable retirement savings. Summary In this informative video, Anne Lester, a former head of Retirement Services at JP Morgan, discusses the benefits of target date funds as a reliable option for retirement investing. Target date funds work on a "glide path," adjusting the asset allocation over time, becoming less risky as the investor nears retirement age. This feature helps mitigate the impact of market volatility and emotional decision-making, as the fund's allocation is professionally managed. Anne highlights the importance of diversification and touches on the significance of providing a simpler investment approach for individuals who may not have the time, interest, or expertise to actively manage their retirement savings. Target date funds offer a do-it-for-me option that helps remove the burden of decision-making from individual investors. Moreover, she explains the considerations in selecting the appropriate target date fund based on factors like desired retirement age, risk tolerance, and financial goals. The video emphasizes the significance of long-term planning and staying committed to the retirement savings strategy, while discouraging common pitfalls like early withdrawals and frequent adjustments. In conclusion, target date funds are a valuable tool for individuals seeking a reliable and low-stress way to build their retirement savings. The simplicity and automatic adjustment of asset allocation make these funds a suitable choice for many investors who wish to secure a financially stable retirement future. Transcript: Lindsey:               Welcome to the Personal Injury Marketing Minute, where we quickly cover the hot topics in the legal marketing world. I'm your host, Lindsey Busfield. As the owner of a successful law firm, you want to be wise in how you invest. This means making informed decisions on how you invest in your company, as well as in your retirement. As you seek out the best ways to fund your retirement, there are seemingly infinite complex 401(k) and IRA plans. So how do you decide which plan is right for you, your employees and your firm? Matt Ruttenberg is here to discuss just that. Matt is the CMO and Director of Business Development for Life, Inc. Retirement Services. Thank you for joining us. Matt:                     Hey, Lindsey. Thanks. Thanks for having me. How do you choose the right retirement plan for a law firm? Lindsey:               Well, ultimately, what we want to understand is how do you choose the right retirement plan for your law firm? Where do you start with that? Matt:                     Yeah. Yeah, so the retirement plan world is so vast. There's probably dozen different options to choose from depending on your income level, what your goals are. To narrow it down every time we have our first conversation with people, we ask them two questions. The first one is basically trying to narrow it down to at least three, maybe four options out of those dozen or so. Then the final question gets it down to one, maybe two, and then we choose from there. The first question is really broad and simple. It's, "What is your goal?" Why are you having this conversation with somebody? Is your number one goal to, or let me rephrase that, "What is your priority?" Why do you need the plan? What are you looking for? Is it to recruit and retain high quality employees or is it to stockpile for your own retirement, maybe save money on taxes or is it all of it? Because there's certain plans that check off every box they need and some of them are narrowed down to one answer or the other. Really once you get that first question, we'll bring it down to maybe two, three plans. Then the final question is, "How much do you really want to save?" How much are you as the business owner going to save? That comes down to, is it just a few hundred dollars per month because you just want to get something started or are you really trying to stockpile, like really, maybe catch up to retirement because you have not done that yet? You haven't done that to-date really started saving because you're putting all your money and all your funds back into the business, which a lot of business owners do, which is a huge investment, which is great. But then really it's getting down to, "Are we diversifying?" Let's figure this out and go from there." Lindsey:               Right and those are two hugely different priorities because a 401(k) can be a great tool to incentivize and attract new employees and especially in today's market where you need to be able to offer something above and beyond what they're getting somewhere else if you really want to be attracting and retaining the right people. Do the largest 0.1% of workplace retirement plans in the country or the “Mega Plans” do things the same as the other 99.9% of plans? As you will hear from my guest, Charlie Nelson, CEO of Retirement & Employee Benefits of VOYA Financial, sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I had a few technical issues and distractions on my end to deal with right before we got started but once we got going this is a fast paced conversation where we hit on some topics things you might expect us to talk about when it comes to what mega retirement plans trends, but we also delve into on a few important topics you might not be thinking about like helping employees figure out what the next best financial decision for them is, whether the prevalence of 401(k) lawsuits in large plans influence their decision making and how some trends in the large market are actually influenced by the small market.   Guest Bio Charles Nelson is chief executive officer of Retirement and Employee Benefits for Voya Financial, Inc. (NYSE: VOYA), which helps Americans plan, invest and protect their savings — to get ready to retire better. In his role, Nelson oversees Tax-Exempt and Corporate Markets and Retail Wealth Management, which comprise the company’s workplace and individual retirement businesses, including 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans, as well as its Employee Benefits business. Prior to joining the company, Nelson served as president of Retirement Services for Great-West Financial through September 2014 and most recently led the legacy Great-West retirement business of Empower Retirement, a business unit of Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company. Nelson has more than 30 years of leadership experience in the retirement and employee benefits industry. He was named the second most influential player in the 401(k) market, according to the 401(k) Wire’s 2012 Most Influential ranking list. During his career, Nelson has managed all aspects of defined contribution businesses. He has overseen government, healthcare, nonprofit, 401(k) and FASCore institutional lines of business, while also managing recordkeeping, administration, operations, sales, products, financial results and broker-dealer services. Nelson began his career at Great-West in the employee benefits business marketing retirement plans, healthcare, stop loss and various benefit offerings. Nelson is a graduate of Whitman College with a degree in chemistry and economics, and he was a member of the Whitman College Board of Overseers from 2008 to 2017. Nelson served as the past president of the board of directors for The SPARK Institute, a trade institute that represents the entire spectrum of defined contribution service providers. He has also been a member of the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA) since 1985. As a member, Nelson has contributed articles for publication, participated on a number of committees, and spoken at numerous regional and national conferences to support and assist the organization’s efforts to further the industry. 401(k) Fridays Podcast Overview Struggling with a fiduciary issue, looking for strategies to improve employee retirement outcomes or curious about the impact of current events on your retirement plan? I’m going to lay down some truth here, people. Listen closely, especially the fellas. In your life, you may find yourself in a position of power or in a situation where someone is vulnerable to your actions. When you find yourself in this position, it’s important that you remember to do one thing: Don’t rape people. I know it’s easy to forget. We live busy lives, working long hours, spending time with family, and wasting so much more time bingeing Netflix episodes of Stranger Things, or spending hours and hours refreshing our Facebook feeds, hoping to get ahold of some of those juicy thumbs up. Or is it up thumbs? But among this busy life, you must find it in you to push through those urges to rape, coerce, or exploit vulnerable individuals into sexual situations. The damage you can do to another individual in such a situation can be life altering. Recently, many prominent men in positions of celebrity or political power, including comedians such Louis C.K. and Al Franken, have been accused by large swathes of women of sexual misconduct and sexual assault. Just today, Al Franken announced his resignation from the Senate amid these sexual allegations. Come on, guys! It is important to know when you are in a position of power so that you may be more vigilant to not exploit that power. Many professions, such as prison guards, police, and medical professionals understand how much power they have over the individuals they work with and serve, and because of this knowledge they have codes of ethics and rules in their professions that give them guidelines on how NOT to exploit those individuals. Yes, we have to tell these professionals not to do it. We had to make it a rule for a reason. Comedians have very few rules of the trade and many comedians are notorious for being rulebreakers when it comes to drugs and other taboo topics, but on this topic, they need to stand up and find it in their hearts to not rape people. They also should probably not kill people as well. No one likes to die. Which brings us to this week’s main topic: Death! While we do talk about the sexual misconduct of celebrities this episode, the main topic is about death from a legal standpoint and estate planning. Our guest Martha Burhardt, a lawyer, not only explains what a trust is, but she also shares some insight on how she deals with the taboo topic of death with her clients.  Next week, Dr. David J. Ley Ph.D. will be joining us to discuss the myth of sex addiction and Ethical Porn for Dicks. We're pretty excited to have him join us. He is a clinical psychologist and has been featured on Dr. Phil As an aside, this is actually our sixtieth episode. We have been doing this podcast for over a year now. We have enjoyed having so many amazing guests and we look forward to having many more in the future. After next week's episode, we will be taking a break to rest and relax and enjoy the holidays. We collectively in the business world (and here at WorkXO for sure), think and write and observe and opine about generations a lot, but always with a particular focus on Millennials (as you know we wrote a book about their impact on the workplace). So in this episode of the Culture Chat, we wanted to talk to someone who could address the other side of the equation - baby boomers - but specifically around the idea of baby boomers working much longer, how they want to transfer their deep and historical knowledge inside the workplace, and how corporate culture could build in different kinds of structures for sharing experiences in both directions between older and younger generations. Listen to this conversation with Alex Assaley, CEO of AFS 401(k) Retirement Services. Our big question for today's conversation was, "In what ways will Baby Boomers working longer have an impact on today's workplace?"

Episode Description As we sit here just past the midpoint of 2016, the 401(k) industry continues to get a lot of attention in the media, with regulators and certainly from employers and their employees.  However, what is not talked about very much is how the business of being a record keeper works and what employers should understand about the business models of their service providers.  To help shed some light on this topic, I invited Bill Yoerger, President of OneAmerica Retirement Services.  Bill is a 30 plus year industry veteran, who runs the corporate retirement division of OneAmerica that supports over 1 million participants, has over 800 employees and has completed three acquisitions over the last five years.   Bill is also included as a perennial member of the most influential people in the retirement industry.  During our conversation, you will hear him share some candid thoughts on the different business models record keepers utilize, questions all employers should be asking their service providers and key topics and trends employers should pay attention to that could impact their retirement service providers going forward. Guest Bio Bill is the President of the OneAmerica Retirement Services Division of the American United Life Insurance Company (AUL).  He is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and guidance to all Retirement Services operations including sales, marketing, record-keeping, and administration functions. He joined AUL in 1993 as a Regional Vice President after a successful career selling retirement plans and services for CIGNA. Prior to his sales career there, he was a Group and Pension Representative for Principal Financial Group in the Cleveland area. Most recently, he was Senior Vice President of AUL’s Retirement Services division.
