Is the "me" you experience every day an actual entity, or just a reflection of your conditioned experience? In this episode, Adam is joined by Reed to explore the "Sense of Me" in relation to awareness itself. Reed shares his journey from "dropping everything" and attempting biblical literal-ism to returning to these questions with a fresh, untainted perspective. Key Topics Covered: Signposts of Thought: How belief systems and conceptual frameworks carve the shape of our thoughts. Spiritual Integration: Why "fireworks and rocket ships" are less common than a slow, gradual ground of being. The Teacher Trap: A candid look at Jiddu Krishnamurti, the "entertainment" of spiritual teachings, and the Jim Newman vs. Sam Harris debate. Identity & Personas: Reed's "master plan" to launch his music project, Numinal, by playing with the concept of fame and projection. At the heart of the conversation is a direct question: Can you actually find the “me,” or is it just a movement of thought? This dialogue touches on non-duality, Krishnamurti, Advaita, Zen, and the lived experience of awareness. www.InsideTheMindsEye.com

Five years ago, Michael Pollan — the acclaimed author of The Botany of Desire, The Omnivore's Dilemma, and How to Change Your Mind — went looking for an answer to one of life's great mysteries: "How does three pounds of brain matter generate subjective experience?" The result is his luminous new book, A World Appears: A Journey Into Consciousness, which comes out tomorrow. Great journalists like Michael have a nose for story and a knack for timing. Both are on display in A World Appears. It's a page-turner teeming with maverick characters. It's a startling look at the emerging science of plant sentience. And it's an urgent exploration of a question we can't afford to ignore: Could consciousness — that is, "subjective or felt experience," the trippy miracle that when we open our eyes, a world appears — emerge in AI? * * * A World Appears is the Next Big Idea Club's latest selection. Don sits down with Sam Harris, neuroscientist, philosopher, and bestselling author, for a wide-ranging and, at times, heated conversation about the state of the country. They unpack the chaos dominating the headlines, the growing anxiety about democratic norms, and the deeper philosophical questions beneath it all. The discussion intensifies as they dive into race, privilege, and how society talks about inequality. This is a candid exchange about power, identity, and what it means to navigate a deeply divided moment in America.

Why do we believe what we believe? Why is changing our opinions so difficult, and why does a challenged belief so often feel like a personal attack? What if beliefs didn’t evolve to be true, but to be socially useful? Today we speak with Sam Harris about the topic of our beliefs: how we see the world and what we take to be true about it.
Bad Bunny made history on Sunday as the first artist to perform almost entirely in Spanish at the Super Bowl. The performance has been interpreted as a love letter to his native Puerto Rico and featured plenty of references to the island and Latin culture more broadly. But the performance, which included a special appearance from Lady Gaga, has also sparked controversy, political backlash and a lot of debate.BBC Sport reporter Sam Harris joins us from San Francisco immediately after the football game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. He explains why people thought Bad Bunny might use the Super Bowl stage to make a political statement and how his message of unity resonated with the audience. We also discuss President Trump's criticism of the halftime show. And we hear about a rival halftime show, organised by the conservative group Turning Point USA and headlined by Kid Rock. Bad Bunny fans from around the world also share their verdict on his performance. Send us a textIn this episode we look at several leaders of the New Atheists, including Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Alex O'Connor and more. What valid critiques of Christianity do they have? Do they reflect adequately on some of the shortcomings of historical atheism? How is their fascination with a cultural form of Christianity and antipathy toward Islam consistent with their atheistic beliefs? We'll also dive into Steven D. Smith's book The Disenchantment of Secular Discourse and explore his concept of "moral smuggling" as it relates to the New Atheists and moral categories in a pluralistic society more generally.

We dig into the collapse of New Atheism, the move from reason to “spirit,” why Jordan Peterson landed when he did, and how religion and politics are re-emerging as answers to a modern crisis of meaning. Along the way we talk Marx, “events” like 9/11 that fracture shared narratives, and why capitalism keeps generating contradictions it cannot metabolize. In the Backroom (Patreon exclusive), we go further into the global right-wing shift, the return of suppressed contradictions liberals and leftists avoid, and figures like Nick Fuentes for Part 2. In Part 3 (also on Patreon only), we then discuss the idea of “Nationalist Internationalism,” arguing that genuine international cooperation requires strong sovereign nations first, and that real internationalism has to pass through nationalism rather than cosmopolitan globalism.Timestamps:00:00:00 Nationalist Internationalism (The Backroom Preview)00:04:01 The Conservative Zeitgeist00:08:55 New Atheism's Rise and Fall00:11:20 Jordan Peterson vs Sam Harris and the religion comeback00:15:23 Why Marx's critique of religion is wrong00:26:18 “Events” and the collapse of shared narratives00:33:02 9/11, New Age mysticism, and the hunger for meaning00:38:37 The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism00:43:43 Badiou: truth procedures and politics-as-religion01:08:29 Religion vs science, the knowledge problem01:20:22 God, Religion, and ideology01:45:08 Backroom preview (Patreon): global right shift, Nick Fuentes, nationalist internationalismGUEST:Dr. Cadell Last (Philosophy Portal)• Philosophy Portal (YouTube): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCtCqYQFPhnU1OnHPveEnYw• Philosophy Portal (Site): https://philosophyportal.online/about• Cadell's Website: https://cadelllast.com/• X/Twitter: https://x.com/cadellnlastFOLLOW 1Dime:• Substack: https://1dimereview.substack.com/• X/Twitter: https://x.com/1DimeOfficial• Instagram: instagram.com/1dimeman• Check out my main channel videos: https://www.youtube.com/@1DimeeLeave a like, drop a comment, and give the show a 5-star rating on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you listen to this.Tags: #1DimeRadio #CadellLast #PhilosophyPortal #Religion #NewAtheism #JordanPeterson #PoliticalPhilosophy #Globalism #Nationalism #Internationalism #Conservatism #RightWingShift

Sam Harris speaks with Ross Douthat about religion, modernity, and what can steady a culture that feels increasingly unmoored. They discuss the case for faith in an age of digital disembodiment, declining birthrates, and looming AI-driven upheaval. They also debate tribalism and dogmatism, whether secular societies can generate durable moral consensus, the foundations of ethics, consciousness and well-being, mathematics as a clue to ultimate reality, and, briefly, demonology. One of 2025's most memorable images was of Silicon Valley's billionaire CEOs lined up in the front rows at President Donald Trump's inauguration. It was visual proof of the tech industry's embrace of MAGA's authoritarian-style of politics — one it has benefited from considerably over the last year. Author and neuroscientist Sam Harris has been using his podcast, “Making Sense,” to talk about the ways tech moguls are corroding our politics, and although he used to be close with some of them, he's become a vocal critic of their support for Trump. Kara and Sam talk about why he thinks the left is to blame for the tech billionaires' shift to the right, why all of us are bad at sorting through the glut of information we find online, and the potential risks that come with the Trump administration's hands-off approach to A.I. They also talk about what possible tech regulation could look like, and whether everyday people stand a chance against tech oligarchs and their platforms. (Please note: This interview was recorded before President Trump signed an executive order to block states from passing A.I. regulation.) Questions? Comments? Which is the best path to freedom? Joseph Goldstein is a cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society and the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, both in Barre, Massachusetts. He is the author of many books including, most recently, Dreamscapes of the Mind. Sam Harris is a neuroscientist, author, podcaster and the proprietor of the Waking Up app. This episode is the first installment of a new series on the Eightfold Path. The rest of the series is available on Waking Up, a top-notch meditation app with amazing teachers and a ton of courses for all levels. In this episode we talk about: What the term "non-duality" means — and why it matters to ordinary meditators. The multiple meanings of non-duality across Buddhist traditions (Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna). How different traditions (and even different teachers within them) define samsara and nirvana. The non-duality of the observer and observed — and how that insight can alleviate suffering. Whether understanding non-duality is practically relevant for reducing stress and emotional reactivity. The evolution of Buddhist teachings over time and how interpretations differ across countries. Sam's argument that the non-dual view can be directly experienced in everyday consciousness — and that realizing it ends unnecessary suffering. Joseph's emphasis on non-duality as one path among many toward the ultimate goal: the end of suffering. How metaphysics and direct experience intersect, and whether doctrinal differences are "self-confirming." The concept of "non-clinging" as the real heart of Buddhist practice — and how it relates to non-dual awareness.
