DC based Andy's Pizza won the top prize at the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas. Andy's Pizza owner Andy Brown won the traditional pizza prize with a Manhattan style cheese pie. There are locations in McLean and DC. Chefs in DC are getting together to help Afghan Refugees in need. Albi, Bammy's, Chiko, and Grazie Grazie will feature sandwiches at Belly Full, a pop-up based out of Grazie Grazie at the Wharf, from Thursday, September 2, through Sunday, September 5. The sandwiches will cost $14, and with the proceeds going to Kind Works. Bar owners of Public Option on Rhode Island Ave in DC welcomed a regular to live in the bar during the lockdown. Her more than a decade advocacy for the "Big Cat Public Safety Act" has a new higher profile and secret weapon in the explosive documentary "The Conservation Game." June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and Capital Pride is being celebrated across Washington this weekend. In a surprise appearance, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff even joined in, participating in the Pride march on Saturday. And they even had their own version of a Pride Brunch, making a surprise stop at Centrolina in CityCenter DC. Eighteenth Street Lounge, an iconic DC nightclub that shut its doors in 2020, is planning to reopen in Blagden Alley, which is not on 18th Street, and will maintain its original name. Jeff Bezos will be flying to space on July 20 making him the first billionaire to go to space. The rocket ship made by Bezos' company Blue Origin has passengers to include younger brother, Mark Bezos. The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a daughter named Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on June 4, Lilibet is a nickname for Queen Elizabeth and Diana is of course after her late grandmother. Local DC sports icon Captain Obvious is feeling much better after spending over 2 months in the hospital recovering from Covid. He posted on his Instagram and his family and close friends were able to visit him as he continues to recover in the ICCU. The Nationals had a rough game in Philly on Sunday. The home plate umpire left the game after being hit with a ball to the face and the next inning starting pitcher Austin Voth was also hit in the face and broke his nose. As the game was delayed already twice with injuries, the home plate protective netting collapsed in the 8th, delaying the game yet again until the netting was placed back up. Naomi Osaka's decision to leave the French Open last week was supported by Sweetgreen. This is something a little different than our usual podcast -- Tommy recently hosted an important conversation with the Lilabean Foundation for Pediatric Brain Cancer's Executive Director, Nicole Giroux and CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski. Andrew's daughter Francesca passed away from a brain tumor last year at only 9 months old. Nicole, whose daughter Lila was diagnosed with brain cancer almost 12 years ago, and Andrew discuss their daughters' life-changing diagnosis days, as well as what drives them to help fight pediatric brain cancer and advocate for research funding. May was brain cancer awareness month so we thought this was an important time to have this conversation. I am looking forward to hosting the Lilabean Foundation's 10th annual Fall Ball Gala on November 6, 2021. Andrew will also be joining us at the Gala in Maryland. Happy Memorial Day Weekend, today is Friday, May 28. If you are traveling this weekend you are one of 37 million according to AAA. Also happening this weekend a group of volunteers are heading to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday to honor the fallen. Lafayette Park by the White House re-opened last week, and there is another French guy statute - his name is Rochambeau. We learn about his role in American history. There has been a steady decline of lesbian bars, in the late 1980s, an estimated 200 lesbian bars existed in the United States. By 2019, researchers believed only 15 remain. "Anyone who is fully vaccinated, can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing. We are kicking off national Drinking Water Week with WSSC Water's, Kelly Caplan. This week recognizes the vital role tap water plays in our daily lives, WSSC Water is teaming up with restaurants in Prince Georges and Montgomery Counties to spread awareness of the Water Fund and support local businesses. The Salvation Army, the WSSC Water Fund helps residential customers in financial need pay their water/sewer bills. Since the pandemic began, 3,298 individuals (1000 households) have received $441,000 in assistance from the Water Fund. 100 percent of all donations go directly to those in need. Customers can make multiple requests for assistance with water/sewer bills, up to $500 per year.
