Megan Keith & Shawn Piper talk about Uber Freight; bridging tech & service; bringing product & design together; automation; & the future of freight technology. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [04.00] Introductions to Megan and Shawn, and their roles at Uber Freight. “I was drawn to logistics because of its complexity and impact. It's a space where smart, intuitive tools can really make a difference, and I love simplifying that complexity so transportation teams can move faster and make better decisions.” [05.21] An overview of Uber Freight, the evolution that brought together deep industry expertise from Transplace with Uber's tech DNA, and how that combination is driving the way they approach logistics today. “That fusion means that we're not just building smart tools or interesting technology, we're building tools that work in the real world. Our approach is to really get that balance of being tech-forward but operationally-grounded, to make customers more agile, resilient and informed.” “Uber Freight's mission is really leading WITH logistics professionals, that's the key word. We really go alongside our customers… The customer is the multiplier for the impact and results we can get.” [07.35] The types of customers Uber Freight typically serves, and how those customers influence Uber Freight's product strategy and service philosophy. [08.49] How Uber Freight combines managed services with advanced technology, why that blend is so important in today's complex logistics environment, and an example of how it helped solve a real operational pain point for a customer. “Identifying opportunities and actualising or contextualising them are two different things… We're able to take those opportunities and make sure those benefits are being realized, so technology and services are working together, in a loop of continuous improvement.” [11.29] The importance of scalability and flexibility, so that customers of all sizes can leverage Uber Freight's high-powered tools. [13.44] How product and design work together to tackle complex challenges across the freight ecosystem, and the core principles Uber Freight relies on to guide platform development. “When you have both in the room, you end up with more thoughtful, more elegant solutions.” [15.44] How Uber Freight builds tools that are powerful enough for complex operations, but intuitive enough for teams that may not have dedicated logistics tech staff. [18.26] How customer feedback, from customers of all sizes, shapes the Uber Freight roadmap, and the importance of putting a focus on usability. “Too much feedback is a great thing!” [22.06] Why AI has always been part of the Uber Freight ethos, why they're investing heavily in automation, and the ways they're using these technologies to empower smarter, faster decisions. [25.42] Uber Freight's Insights AI, and how it helps smaller teams punch above their weight. “It actually interprets the data, it doesn't just visualize it. It's able to identify patterns, flag risks and recommend actions, which shifts teams more to proactive management rather than reactive firefighting.” [27.25] The future of freight technology, and how Uber Freight is leading the charge. “It's connecting these different islands of automation into more systemic automation; it's a shift away from just efficiency, which has been the historical role of automation, to effectiveness.” “It's one thing for a system to identify a change but, in the real world, that change has to be implemented by people.” [29.21] The key takeaway that shippers and industry leaders should walk away with from today's discussion. Uber Freight announced it's newest capacity-as-a-service offering, Broker Access. The tool is designed to provide capacity for other brokers through the Uber platform. Uber has tens of thousands of carriers within it's network through the development of it's own brokerage and the acquisition of Transplace. My concern with this program is, in my opinion, this is a case of double or co-brokering. Whichever terminology you choose to use, it represents a problem as most shippers would be very opposed to any type of arrangement where one broker is procuring capacity from another broker. During the episode, I break down why I believe what I do about this program, and what I think Uber should focus on moving forward to eventually reach sustainable profitability.

In this episode of B2B Marketing: The Provocative Truth, Benedict speaks with Karen Sage how businesses can go further with establishing their brand.Businesses understand that it's important to have an identity that their customers align with, but quite often, their priorities are about generating revenue as quickly as possible and disregard brand. Because of this, brand often becomes generic so as to appeal to as many people as possible. But it is proven over and over again how a unique brand that stands for something actually drives growth long term and brings your ideal customer to you sooner. So the question becomes, why aren't companies doing more? What is stopping them from ensuring their long-term success?Karen Sage is the CMO of Shipwell, and she is a hands-on leader who has used her “out-of-the-box” strategies to strongly deliver to revenue. Prior to joining Shipwell last year, Karen has served as CMO of Syncron, CMO of Transplace, CMO of MercuryGate International, and many other senior marketing roles. In addition to her role at Shipwell, Karen also serves as an Advisory Board Member for Service Council and as a Member at HYPCCCYCL.You can find Karen Sage on Linkedin. You can watch full video versions of the podcast on our YouTube channel.Ready to provoke the truth? WBSRocks: Business Growth with ERP and Digital Transformation
The startup, consumer, and enterprise markets are like different planets in the business galaxy. Disrupting the consumer market doesn't guarantee enterprise success. It's like rocking the party but struggling with a corporate ball. Also, the convergence of the consulting and enterprise market is not new, whether consulting companies bundle products as part of their portfolio or product companies offer consulting as part of their bundle. Transplace was one of the most cloud-native platforms, along with the managed transportation offering. The interesting part about Transplace is that it has some very large accounts, but it's also a leaner offering positioned for smaller companies. So where does Uber Freight in its capabilities? And how does it compare with other Supply Chain solutions out there? In today's episode, we invited a panel of industry experts for a live discussion on LinkedIn to conduct an independent review of TransplaceTMS capabilities. We covered many grounds, including the differences in TMS solutions that might be managed services companies owned vs technologies. Finally, we covered why Uber Freight decided to acquire Transplace and what customers can expect from Transplace if they decide to buy them. For more information on growth strategies for SMBs using ERP and digital transformation, visit our community at wbs. rocks or elevatiq.com. This week's guest is Matt Harding, Head of 4PL Data and Analytics at UberFreight. With over 25 years in the industry at logistics.com, Chainalytics, Transplace, and now UberFreight, Matt is a leading light in applying analytics and visualization to the transportation industry. In our conversation, we trace the evolution of data science in trucking, discuss the understanding gap between the C-suite and transportation executives, debate the impact that the wide availability of market data has had on drivers, carriers, and the industry as a whole, and talk about the challenges and hurdles of introducing change - especially data driven - within an organization.
This week on the podcast Matt sits down with Tracy Rosser, current Strategic Advisor at NewRoad Capital Partners and previous EVP of Operations at Transplace (now Uber Freight) and SVP of Transportation and Supply Chain at Walmart. Tracy and Matt begin by discussing Tracy's experiences in logistics, operations, and supply chain: specifically Tracy's journey from managing a Walmart Distribution Center to SVP of Transportation and Supply Chain. Tracy then dives into the valuable lessons he learned during his time at Transplace (now Uber Freight) in the midst of the pandemic, touching on the importance of bringing the right people to the table to make data-backed decisions. The conversation concludes with a discussion about supply chain resiliency, doing things right the first time, and the importance of having a strategic understanding of supplier relationships.

Founded in 2017, and located in Scottsdale, Arizona, Emerge is one of the fastest-growing technology startups in the U.S. Key Takeaways: The Secret Sauce Mark McEntire is the Senior Vice President of Operations at Emerge, a freight technology firm that is reinventing freight procurement by providing access to benchmarked rates and thousands of trusted partners to maximize cost-savings. In the podcast interview, Mark and Joe discuss the secret sauce that enables shippers, brokers, 3PLs, and carriers to become more effective, efficient, and profitable. The secret sauce is relationships with your supply chain partners. While the focus is on freight tech and supply chain software that is automating the industry, relationships are still the secret sauce that drives the best companies. Mark and his team work to become trusted partners with their shippers, carriers and technology partners – supplier, vendor, etc. is not good enough. Developing relationships is not only a normal human thing, it is also really good for business. Having good relationships leads to higher job satisfaction and better business results (faster, better, cheaper, and smarter). To ensure that the Emerge team develop fruitful relationships, Mark insists upon a communication strategy that includes quarterly business reviews (QBR), reporting key performance indicators, root cause analysis, lead-time analytics, cost-down goals, etc.. Shippers using Emerge's Freight Procurement Platform are able to spend less time on carrier RFPs and more time developing relationships with current and prospective carriers. The goal is to let the technology automate the process, while humans are building relationships with their fellow humans. Emerge is reinventing freight procurement by providing access to benchmarked rates and thousands of trusted partners to maximize cost-savings. Emerge is custom built for freight RFP events and as a result the process is streamlined, easy, and saves shippers time and money. The Emerge platform provides carriers access to more shippers and more opportunities. Carriers gain access and bid directly on exclusive contract and spot lanes that they may have never had access to before. Emerge's network connects carriers with shippers of all sizes, providing them more opportunities in the lanes that work for your company. Emerge uses a network model, which becomes increasingly valuable to users (carriers and shippers) as it scales. This week's guest is Tracy Rosser, Executive Vice President, Operations at Transplace. Tracy has been in the industry for almost 30 years at a carrier, a retailer (WalMart), and now at a premiere 3PL (Transplace). In our conversation, Tracy discusses the differences and similarities of working at a 3PL versus a shipper, how the pandemic actually improved transportation management at many firms, and how important it is to consistently remove waste from supply chains and transportation - namely empty miles and excessive dwell. We also touch upon how to handle low-volume lanes and the potential fate of owner operators in this deflationary market. DAT iQ
The spot market has been declining, but with rates and volumes still above historic norms it's unclear where it will stabilize. Ben Cubitt, senior vice president of consulting at Transplace, says rates per mile have declined since Q4 from $3.50 to about $2.36. Truckstop.com regularly recorded more than a million daily postings on its load board platform throughout last year. That has steadily decreased since the first week of January and load postings were around 900,000 daily during the week of May 8. Dean Croke, principal analyst at DAT Solutions, says rates are still historically high but carrier operating costs have gone up as much as 50 cents a mile over last year. Cubitt expects spot rates to start leveling out midsummer based on historic norms.

Key Takeaways from the BGSA Conference Benjamin Gordon is the Founder and Managing Partner of Cambridge Capital, a private equity firm that invests in logistics and supply chain companies. For the 16th year, Ben and his firm hosted the BGSA Holdings Supply Chain Conference at the Palm Beach Breakers hotel. The conference was held from January 19-21. The BGSA Conference is the industry's only CEO-level conference focused on all segments of the supply chain. Over 300 of the top CEOs in the logistics and supply chain space attended this year's conference to discuss technology, strategy and deals. In fact, Uber's acquisition of Transplace began with a conversation between the respective CEOs at the BGSA conference a few years ago. In the podcast interview, Ben and Joe discussed 3 key takeaways from the BGSA conference: The first key takeaway is the increased awareness and growing importance of the supply chain space. As the pandemic and supply chain disruptions upended the economy, attention and investment money flowed to the logistics and supply chain space. Many logistics, transportation, warehousing, and freight tech companies have experienced explosive growth. The second key takeaway is the growth of ecommerce. It took ecommerce 10 years to become 15% of total retail sales. In the first quarter of the pandemic, ecommerce grew to become 33% of total retail sales. The staggering growth of ecommerce meant that last mile, ecommerce fulfillment, visibility solutions, returns software, and other supply chain services firms grew to meet the surging demand. The third and final key takeaway from the BGSA Conference was the huge amount of financial deal activity. There was an 84% growth in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) measured in dollars. The M&A deals included the following: 1.) industry consolidation, 2.)ecommerce companies buying logistics companies, 3.) logistics companies buying ecommerce companies, 4.) infrastructure companies buying logistics companies and 5.) retailers buying logistics companies. There was also a tremendous increase in supply chain technology investments, which is reflected in the growth of unicorns in the space – 25 unicorns in 2020 and 51 unicorns in 2021. Unicorn is a term used in the venture capital industry to describe a privately held startup company with a value of over $1 billion. BGSA Holdings specializes in providing strategy-led M&A advisory services for leading CEOs in the supply chain and technology sector. BGSA has a track record of executing over 50 deals for our clients, who rely on them for trusted and experienced transaction advice. Founded in 2017, and located in Scottsdale, Arizona, Emerge is one of the fastest-growing technology startups in the U.S. Key Takeaways: The Freight Market Place Dave Maddox is the VP of Enterprise Sales at Emerge, a flexible, efficiency-driven RFP platform for freight. In the podcast interview, Joe and Dave discuss the freight market place, which is the Emerge platform which was built for freight professionals by freight professionals. The Emerge freight platform connects shippers and carriers with an RFP platform built especially for freight. Shipper problems: Shippers are experiencing unprecedented challenges including supply chain disruptions, driver shortages, truck capacity problems, high gas prices, price volatility, and port delays. They are also short-handed as the tight labor market makes hiring very difficult. Many shippers are also struggling to manage their newly remote workforces. When it comes to managing freight RFPs, shippers lack technology so they use the “mass emailing spreadsheet” process which is cumbersome, inefficient, and ineffective. Because the freight RFP process is so difficult, most shippers Carrier problems: Carriers often don't have access to the lanes and shippers that they want. Carriers also don't like the freight RFP process because they have difficulty predicting freight rates. Carriers want access to shippers of choice without a broker adding a big margin. The Emerge Market Place enables carriers to bid directly on shipper contract and spot lanes and win business with shippers that they typically wouldn't have access to. The Emerge Market Place offers shippers a free RFP platform built to manage their spot and contract needs. Shippers choose from thousands of vetted carriers or invite their current carriers and brokers, allowing them to source the best partner for their freight. Emerge has created a technology platform that has streamlined the freight RFP process and delivered the following benefits: Freed of the time consuming, clunky process, shippers and carriers can spend more time discussing the freight characteristics and getting to know each other. With the process streamlined, shippers are moving to quarterly RFPs, which enables the carriers to deliver more competitive bids – and live with them (no more paper rates). In addition to their incumbent carriers, shippers have access to thousands of vetted carriers within the Emerge system. Emerge enables shippers to grow their partner network by connecting to thousands of verified carriers and brokers to ensure their loads are always covered. Carriers gain access and bid directly on exclusive contract and spot lanes that they would not otherwise have access to. Emerge's network connects carriers with shippers of all sizes, providing more opportunities for carriers to work in their preferred lanes. About George Abernathy George Abernathy, Emerge President and Board Member, has more than 30 years of supply chain and technology experience. Notably, George is the former President of leading industry publication FreightWaves where he was responsible for all revenue and commercial efforts, including SaaS, media, and virtual & physical events. George has a breadth of direct industry background, having held executive leadership positions at Transplace, J.B. Hunt, Logistics.com and Sabre Logistics. About Emerge Emerge, based in Scottsdale, AZ, is one of the fastest-growing startups in the U.S. and is transforming the $800 billion transportation and logistics industry with its digital freight marketplace platform. Emerge's award-winning marketplace provides access to direct capacity and live market conditions helping shippers and carriers make the strongest, most beneficial decisions when procuring domestic freight. Launched in 2017, Emerge is backed by Greycroft, New Road Capital, 9Yards Capital, and the founder of GlobalTranz. Key Takeaways: The State Of The Industry George Abernathy is the President and a Board Member of Emerge. Emerge is reinventing freight procurement by providing access to benchmarked rates and thousands of trusted partners to maximize cost-savings.In the podcast interview, George and Joe discuss 3 important trends that are impacting the logistics and transportation industry. Trend #1 – Technology is separating the industry between companies that are investing heavily in technology and those that are unable or unwilling to make technology investments. The tech-centric players are lowering their costs, improving the customer experience, and redeploying headcount from manual functions as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation perform the clerk work. Trend #2 – End-to-End visibility (from order to cash) is enabling logistics and supply chain professionals to make better decisions. While visibility is great, the ultimate goal is to improved collaboration and higher profits. “Where's my money?” is just as important as “Where's my stuff?” Trend #3 – 3rd party logistics companies are increasingly developing specializations or niches. As shippers and supply chain companies demand expect (demand) more from their 3PLs, companies are investing in areas where they can be most competitive. An inch wide and a mile deep is waaay better than a mile wide and an inch deep. Emerge welcomes George Abernathy as its new President. George has more than 30 years of supply chain and transportation industry leadership experience with carrier, broker, and technology companies. George will help guide the company to the next level of success. Emerge uses a network model, which becomes increasingly valuable to users (carriers, shippers, agents) as it scales. There are many paths people follow to start a career in procurement, but not a single one of them is a straight line. Although this can present challenges from a skills consistency perspective, more often than not, it actually serves to expand what procurement is capable of by ensuring that the team has a broad range of perspectives and experiences. Over the last decade or so, procurement has ceased to be the place that people are sent so that they can't do too much damage to the company. Procurement leaders are actively recruiting the best and brightest people from other functions and roles to join their ranks. Sam Achampong, the Regional Head and General Manager of the MENA Region for CIPS, is a perfect example. After playing a project management role in a cross-functional personnel rationalization effort, he was invited to join procurement. He accepted, and the rest is history. In this episode of Dial P for Procurement, Sam tells special guest Kim Winter and co-hosts Kelly Barner and Scott Luton: • Why he found Dubai to be uniquely refreshing when he first arrived there, and how he tries to apply that same perspective to procurement • The valuable position and influence that come with being an official ‘Chartered institute' and the additional expectations it creates, especially in a region with so many participating countries • Why it is absolutely critical for procurement to be aligned with the overall business strategy and the various types of value that allows them to create for the organization Additional Links & Resources: Learn more about Dial P for Procurement: https://supplychainnow.com/program/dial-p-for-procurement/ Subscribe to Supply Chain Now and other Supply Chain Now programs: https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe Learn more about efforts to help our friends in India: https://vibha.org/ WEBINAR- Uncertain Times Fueling Supply Chain Innovations with Transplace: https://lnkd.in/gJSppZc WEBINAR- PING Drives to Supply Chain Transformational Success with John Galt Solutions: https://lnkd.in/gyh-aj2 WEBINAR- How Digital Transformation Accelerates & Strengthens Your Supply Chain with Esker Inc: https://lnkd.in/gTqW-wb Download the 2021 Q1 U.S.Bank Freight Payment Index: https://freight.usbank.com/?es=a255&a=20 Learn more about our Highlighted Non-Profit Making it Happen for Q2, Good360: https://good360.org/ This episode was hosted by Scott Luton, Kelly Barner, and Kim Winter. The pandemic uncovered some critical supply chain vulnerabilities around the world. As the vaccine gains traction and life begins to look a little more "normal" there is a sense of anticipation. However, it seems we are in short supply in a number of areas. The Bounce Back Begins is a great way to think this stage of the recovery as there will surely be ups and downs. Right now, shortages are popping up in a number of areas – some expected, some not. Here's a list of a few items: Microchips, chicken, lumber, gas, steel, metals, plastic, chlorine, ketchup packets, etc. Karin and team talk about how far we come on a few important themes around Digital Supply Chain and Procurement transformations: o Can we recalibrate to reduce risk exposure? o Are we seeing proof that leveraging advances in technology is accelerating response times? o Are we gaining agility, resilience and better business continuity planning? o Will we emerge from the pandemic stronger and with more resilient supply chains? The supply chain industry is certainly faced with challenges due to the ongoing pandemic and unparalleled global impact over an extended horizon. But, remember that supply chain disruptions are not new. They occur with regularity around health & safety, weather emergencies & natural disasters, trade disputes, geopolitical instability, and other business disruptions including port closures, product recalls, equipment failures, packaging issues, you name it. These disruptions are far more frequent and highlight the need for business continuity and contingency planning with logistics and supply chain technology solution that leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning and advanced analytics to gain agility, mitigate risks and deliver great service while increasing efficiency and controlling costs. From growing up in a small Pennsylvania coal mining town, to a volunteer post in Africa – and a successful career in the logistics industry, our guest, Mollie Bailey Haney, has experienced things most people don’t get to see in a lifetime. After completing her degree in liberal arts, Mollie wasn’t ready for a 9-5 job. She heard about some friends’ experiences with the Peace Corps and decided to sign up as an “Integrated Agricultural Volunteer” in Africa. For two years, Mollie worked side-by-side with local farmers in and around Zaire to help them build sustainable ecosystems. Upon her return, Mollie started work at DXL where she learned the shipping business. She later moved to C.H. Robinson and spent 12 years in a variety of senior roles until she was recruited to Transplace, a leading provider of transportation management services, and logistics technology. In this episode, host Linda Rigano talks to Mollie about growing up during devastating economic times for coal miners, how having three brothers prepared her for a male-dominated work environment and how giving back by doing service for villagers in the Central African Republic taught her invaluable life lessons. Mollie shares her experience moving up the ladder in the transportation and logistics industry and how working at Transplace has been an incredibly challenging and enjoyable experience. Mollie also talks about the most important lessons she’s learned along the way, and how you can learn just as much from a bad manager as a good one. Hear Mollie's incredible story for yourself!
