“When I was running the race, I really didn't have a time in mind. I knew when I crossed that line that it was going to be a decent time…When I looked at the time, that was not what I was expecting to see there. That was pretty surreal. I'm super, super grateful.” Texas A&M junior Sam Whitmarsh popped onto our radar with a 1:44.46 at LSU's Battle on the Bayou meet on March 30th, which moved him to No. 7 on the all-time collegiate list.  When we put the call out on the CITIUS MAG team for bold predictions for the 2024 season, Kyle Merber predicted that Whitmarsh would make the U.S. Olympic 800m team. Only U.S. champion and World Indoor champion Bryce Hoppel and 2023 NCAA champion Will Sumner ran faster than 1:44.46. The reason that people may not be as familiar with Whitmarsh is that his 2022 season was cut short as a freshman because he was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome –  a heart condition that leads to periods of rapid heart rate. In 2023, he was the SEC Championship runner-up and then only reached the NCAA West Regional in the 800m. This past indoor season, he missed qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships by 0.01 sec. It feels like at every U.S. Olympic Trials or U.S. Championships there's a rising star out of the NCAA who can shake things up. Whitmarsh is looking like he could be that guy in 2024. Are we responsible for how we behave? If so, should we feel bad about it? And if the answer to those two is 'yes' and 'yes' respectively, how do we change our behaviour?  How much of 'behaviour change' is about nudging or encouraging individuals to change, versus how much is banning bad things and making good things easier and cheaper?  And are simple answers stupid? (Spoiler: yes.) Joining Dave this month is the esteemed Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh MBE. Lorraine is Prof of Environmental Psychology at the University of Bath, UK, and runs the Centre for Climate and Social Transformations (CAST).  She's an expert in a hundred thousand things, several of which help her know how to change our behaviour and whose job it is. Owl noises: --  07:34 - The Climate Change Committee advises  the UK government on, er, climate change. It says about 60% of emissions cuts to come require behaviour change in some form.  You might also like this report Lorraine wrote for them about how to do that. -- 20:25 - An excellent primer on nudging from the Decision Lab.  And at 25:18, here's them on sludging. -- 24:01 - The Austrian nudging experiment. -- 32: 24: Fly lots? In this revisited episode of Beyond the Balance sheet, Dorothy discusses her experience as the mother of a child with ADHD and Bipolar Disorder which led to her interest in educating other families touched by these issues. She speaks about the journey of getting multiple opinions for her daughter's diagnosis and reveals what she would have done differently for her family. Tune in to this episode as we talk about what is preventing people from really finding and channeling resources to mental health concerns.   IN THIS EPISODE:   [02:10] Dorothy opens up about her experience parenting a daughter who is struggling with behavioral health issues.  [08:55] Dorothy searched tirelessly for answers. She speaks about the journey of getting multiple opinions for her daughter's diagnosis.  [12:50] What Dorothy would have done differently with her family.  [24:05] About what is preventing people from really finding and channeling resources to mental health concerns.  [29:10] Overall, be respectful of your child's wishes.    KEY TAKEAWAYS:   Any major illness disrupts the family dynamic. An inordinate amount of attention and time is devoted to the one child that appears sick. While on the other hand, the siblings that appear normal are getting less attention. Parents of children who have a major illness have a divorce rate of 80%.  Marriages that are fragile fall apart more easily than those that are strong. It is very frustrating for a family to not have clarity around their loved one's diagnosis. However, there should be a relief knowing that an illness can change over time.      LINKS MENTIONED:   LinkedIn   https://www.linkedin.com/in/dorothy-sprague-b498a71/     BIO:   Dorothy Whitmarsh, a native New Yorker with two grown daughters, is a graduate of Brown University and holds an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business.  She retired from Wall Street in 1989.  Dorothy has served on the boards of The Chapin School in New York City (where she was elected a corporate trustee and served for 20 years), The Dutchess Land Conservancy, the National Eating Disorders Association and the Republican Majority for Choice.     Dorothy's experience as the mother of a child with ADHD and Bipolar Disorder led to her interest in educating others about the experience of families touched by these issues.  Over the years she has consulted pro bono with numerous families trying to cope with the challenges of learning, eating and mood disorders in their children.  In addition, she was a member of the National Council at McLean Hospital in Boston for several years while her daughter was treated there.

A focus on people is central to the future of mobility. Behavioural and social science can help us better design our built environment and its transport system around users, and allow technology to improve the lives of individuals and society. These are the words of Sir Patrick Vallance, the Government's Chief Scientific Advisor and now familiar with the public due to his role in supporting the UK Government to address the Covid-19 pandemic. He wrote this in 2018 for the Government Office for Science report: A time of unprecedented change in the transport system. Ben Whitmarsh, founder of Awesome Panda Production, joins Graham Brown in this episode of The Age of Audio. The Age of Audio is a series of conversations with thought leaders and changemakers in the world of audio. Podcasts, Radio, Social Audio, and Data are converging to create engaging and authentic content for a new generation of listeners. To get access to all the audio conversations and book content for Age of Audio, go to theageofaudio.com.Show Highlights: • I didn't know what I wanted to do at all. I just knew I wanted to be involved in radio. And I wonder if that's what comes with an awful lot of podcasters now.  Maybe they hear podcasts, they just get inspired and they want to get involved.• It was at the point where radio in the UK was starting to go downhill, trouble seemed ahead. And that's another interesting thing. You could potentially argue that podcasting seized the baton there and the renaissance of engagement through rich audio storytelling, (which is one of the things that we are going to be talking about) could be directly linked to this.• There's so much talk about bringing your authentic self, how you've got to inform, you've got to educate and all of those things are absolutely right. But if you don't bring entertainment, then you can be authentic as you like but nobody will want to listen to it.                                                                                                                                             • It's interesting that you mentioned being a musician there because I'm very much an amateur musician, but I do play in bands and have played solo over many years. I used to busk in Sydney. I did that for an awfully long time. It was terrific.                                    • My dad was a musician as well. And when I first started playing, he said the one thing you've got to remember is you've got to go onto that stage and you've got to make the audience feel that you've got everything under control. You've got to be in charge up there.                                                                                                                                                                                                              • I just feel that it's like, yeah, that's it's performance, isn't it it's storytelling. The best teachers were also the best storytellers, the best performers.                                                                                                                                                                                                                      • And the people who are doing the podcasts I think are invariably incredibly passionate about what they're doing. Certainly, the ones that I listen to, they're incredibly passionate and they're very well researched.                                                                                                                                                  • Performance really means putting yourself out there. Like if you were a musician. You don't leave anything on the table, do you? When you perform, you go live, you give everything and that takes everything out of you.

Dorothy's experience as the mother of a child with ADHD and Bipolar Disorder led to her interest in educating other families touched by these issues. First, Dorothy opens up about her experience parenting a daughter who struggled with her mental health for many years. She speaks about the journey of getting multiple opinions for her daughter's diagnosis and reveals what she would have done differently for her family. Tune in to this episode of Beyond the Balance Sheet as we talk about what is preventing people from really finding and channeling resources to mental health concerns.

At that time, little did they know what their new hobby would grow into! Jim & Crystal live in Kasson, MN and sell small-batch roasted specialty coffee with their business, Trail Creek Coffee Roasters. They initially leveraged Minnesota's cottage food law to start and grow their business from home, and after a couple of years, they moved into a brick-and-mortar storefront to expand their business. Although their loyal customers rave about their coffee, it's likely their continued marketing efforts that have had a greater impact on their business. They are constantly finding new and creative ways to collaborate with other businesses and organizations, and then they showcase those collaborations through social media. A far cry from their initial popcorn popper roaster, they now own a commercial-grade roaster that costs tens-of-thousands of dollars! Their path to success hasn't necessarily been the quickest or easiest, but through a double shot of passion and persistence, their small business continues to grow!Get full show notes and transcript here: https://forrager.com/podcast/37

This is a very special episode and features one of my best friends, Jamie Wind Whitmarsh!Jamie is a fabulous composer, percussionist, and human being. And, I am leading a Percussion Quartet Consortium with him as the composer. The work is entitled American Biomes and it is a full concert length work (40-50 minutes), written for percussion quartet (with limited instrumentation), and can be programed in its entirety or as individual movements.  I have commissioned Jamie a lot over the years because I, much like a lot of other university programs, have some incredibly talented students but limited rehearsal space and gear options. So, this piece is on the scale of a David Maslanka work but written for a quartet with limited instruments, i.e. one of each of the main keyboard instruments (marimba, vibes, glock, chimes, etc.), drums (toms, bd, snare drum, etc.), and found objects. With the deadline to join the consortium coming up, I wanted to take a moment and highlight the project for those that might be interested in joining. Here's the overview and how to join:-       $200 buy in (can be split up however you want)-       $23 additional solos, duet, and ensemble pieces will be delivered to you via Dropbox-       Receive the piece by January 15th, 2021-       Join by contacting me at tommy.dobbs@uafs.edu or jwhitmarshmusic@gmail.com  I hope you enjoy this episode and check out some of Jamie's work and his podcast. Also, all the music you hear during the episode was taken from the American Biomes sketches, which was Jamie using the voice memo app to record himself playing piano and marimba . Also, there's a short clip at the end (when Jamie is telling a funny story about me) that was used with permission of my good friend, Brian Nozny. Mike Dodd apologized. He’d been getting all wound up, or as wound up as the man, labeled by anyone you ask as one of the nicest guys in the world, can get. He even dropped the f word not once, but twice. “Sorry about that,” he said on SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter. “I think I said the f word.” You can forgive the man for being impassioned. He’s seen beach volleyball in its every iteration, every stage of its growth, from infantile to colossus to broken to slightly built up once more. He competed when there was hardly any money in it at all, in the early 1980s, when he was fresh out of college and finished with a brief – very brief – stint in the NBA with the San Diego Clippers. He’d boycotted the 1984 World Championships, not only witnessing the formation of the AVP – then only a players’ union, not a tour – but playing an integral part of it. He’d won five consecutive Manhattan Beach Opens with Tim Hovland. He’d talked smack to Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos. He’d played in and won the only Olympic qualifier to date, securing a spot in the 1996 Atlanta Games with Mike Whitmarsh, where they’d win silver in one of the greatest shows of dominance the United States has had on the beach, on the men’s side, at least. And he’s since commentated (in 2000 and 2004) and coached (in 2008 and 2012) and you won’t ever find the man too far off the beach. He’s not one to preach about the old-school days, as some, mostly fans, are wont to do. But he does look at the current landscape of the game in the United States and wonder if there isn’t a simpler solution to the sometimes-complicated hierarchy. “If I were the czar of USA Volleyball, I would mandate that my eight best guys would just go down. Just go down for five hours in the afternoon, when it’s windy and [crappy] and it’s not little morning 9 a.m. perfect, no wind, no nothing,” he said. “Draw your lines, switch partners, and see who’s the fu***** best. See who’s the fu***** best. Keep score. Keep track. It’s an easy pick.” It was less about the money than it was about who won, who had bragging rights in an era of bombastic bragging and smack talk, and few won more than Dodd. Few, lest the tour returns to its halcyon days of 20-30 tournaments a year, ever will. Seventy-two times Dodd finished atop the podium in the United States, 73 if you include winning that Olympic qualifier in Baltimore in 1996, which Dodd does. “If you don’t think an Olympic trial prepares you for the Olympics,” he said, “you’re outta your mind.” Yet it hasn’t been done since. The FIVB has become the road through which U.S. teams must qualify for the Games. For now, at least. There are other countries who operate differently. Dodd has seen it himself. Prior to the 2016 Games, he was hired by the Italian federation as the beach program’s head coach. They rented a house in Southern California for the eight potential candidates, and what did Dodd do but bring them out to the beach, draw up some lines, and have them play. They’d mix partners, play in the wind, in the most imperfect conditions. And he’s see who wanted it most, who could just find a way to win, just as he used to do during those endless days when he was a 20-something kid out of San Diego State. He and Hovland and Karch Kiraly and Sinjin Smith would practice for four hours with the United States indoor national team, put in another hour of jump-training, then find the closest liquor store, pick up a couple of Mickey’s big mouth beers, and play beach until the sun went down. And they’d learn how to win. It is hardly a matter of coincidence that those four are now all in the Hall of Fame, four of the winningest players in history, four individuals where only a single name will do – Hov, Dodd, Sinjin, Karch – and you know exactly whom they mean. “It was just the jungle,” he said. “It was natural selection. Smith and Stokie, they’re winning, they’re great. Dodd and Hovland. Dodd and Whitmarsh. This team and that team. You migrated to each other and you did it by survivial because you had the best chance of winning. There was money and this but everybody just wanted to win. At the end of the day, it’s how many opens did you win.” And then, coaching those eight Italian players a little less than a decade ago, he saw those very same traits emerge again. A cocky, swaggering young player named Daniele Lupo was rooming with Paolo Nicolai, a 6-foot-8 blocker who had won consecutive youth world tour events in 2007 and 2008. When Dodd swung by the house, as he sometimes did, he saw them, after hours on the beach, dinking a ball back and forth in their room, competing still. “I had the analytics that said they were probably the best team,” he said. “But that’s what told me they would be the best. They just had the love for the game.” Sure enough, in 2012, Lupo and Nicolai would qualify for the London Games, stunning Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in the first round. Then they’d claim silver in Rio in 2016. It’s that love of the game that Dodd wants to see. Who wants it more?   Who wants to be king of the jungle?

Trail Creek Coffee Roasters is a small business that started out of a garage and has recently transitioned into a shared commercial space in downtown Kasson. The business aims to provide small batch specialty coffee roasts and has a passion for connection, community, and global impact. On the podcast today, we chat about: • The value Jim and Crystal found in working with the local organization Community and Economic Development Associates (CEDA). • How the pair took advantage of Minnesota’s Cottage Food Exemption act to sell their product for several years and build up a customer base before pursuing a commercial space. • How the pair was set up on a blind date over 15 years ago during college and spent much of their early relationship in a coffee shop, which fueled their dreams to one day own their own coffee business. • How Jim taught himself to roast coffee with online videos and a vintage popcorn machine. • The transition to being “all in” in the business. • The need to budget more time and money than expected when building out commercial space. • The value of growing a business in a sustainable manner. • How they’re dealing with fear of failure. Edit: You know when you've given the podcast gear to your vice-chair to do interviews at QED and you realise you needed it to record a welcome message for the very first Fringe 2017 podcast? Yeah, that... It's a very special time here at Podcast HQ as we start to bring you some episodes from our 2017 Edinburgh Fringe lineup. Normally we'd start with our compilation evening Our Friends On The Fringe, but that must wait for another day (and because we forgot to ask if it was ok. Oops!). So our first release from this year's Fringe is historian and writer Professor Tim Whitmarsh. Most people think of atheism as something modern and western, but in fact it has a rich, deep and weird history to rival any religion’s. In Tim's talk we’ll meet some of classical antiquity’s most brilliant and engaging characters, including Diogenes (who lived in a barrel) and Socrates (who didn’t). We’ll also reflect on what it means, for us now, to think of atheism as something with a history older than Islam and Christianity. Prof. Whitmarsh is the author of *Battling the Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World*, described by the New York Times as ‘excellent’, by the Guardian as ‘brilliant’, and by his mother as ‘alright if you like that kind of thing’. As well as another 6 books (about Greek literature, thought and culture), he has written for the Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement and the London Review of Books, and has appeared a number of times on BBC TV and radio. He has held professorial positions in the universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Exeter. www.classics.cam.ac.uk/directory/professor-tim-whitmarsh Twitter: @TWhittermarsh

In ancient Greece, did everyone unquestioningly believe in the gods of Olympus? Was there no one in classical Athens to write the equivalent of “The Zeus Delusion”? According to our guest this week, the Greeks’ religious beliefs were as varied and nuanced as they are today. Tim Whitmarsh is a classicist and professor of Greek Culture at University of Cambridge. In his newest book, Battling the Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World, he explores the skeptical aspects of ancient history that are often left out of common retellings. Like so many other cultures, ancient Greece went through its own periods of enlightenment and reform, times when religion and irreligion, and superstition and rationalism, coexisted. Whitmarsh argues that we moderns shouldn’t be so quick to tie the ancient Greeks to their mythology, because along with the myths and gods there is a rich history of secularism, critical thinking and even atheism.
