Today I am joined by Jodie, Zoe and Fin of the Melancholic Rock band, Mirrors, from Cork!Mirrors blend raw energy with Irish anxieties through bold, compelling music. Drawing inspiration from The Cranberries, Mazzy Star and Just Mustard, their sound fuses Celtic rock and melancholic, shoegaze-laced textures. For this episode, I will be chatting with the band about the two things mainly, with the first being the fantastic achievement that is the band being longlisted as part of the emerging talent competition to play Glastonbury this year.Secondly, and the primary focus of the episode, is the band's brilliant brand new single 'Drowning', which was released today and was recorded with Wayfield records. The single also has an accompanying music video that was also released today and was directed and edited by Katelyn Leahy.Mirrors on LinktreeCover photo was by phototree.ieDrowning official music videoSkinner + Joe Maxi + Digdeep live at Sin EHorrenda + Their Last Stop live at Sin E Hosted on Acast. Siobhan McClean aka shiv is an Irish-Zimbabwean producer, singer-songwriter of neo-soul, RnB and lo-fi hip-hop who has shared two songs from the forthcoming debut album the defiance of a sadgirl this September, 'Limerence' and 'Cherry Pie', the latter featuring Kojaque, and produced by Gaptoof.I spoke to Shiv about the nature of collaborating and connecting with different artists and producers for this episode of the Nialler9 podcast, ahead of Shiv's set at All Together Now Festival this August Bank Holiday weekend, where Shiv plays on the Jameson Connects The Circle Stage at 7pm on the Friday night. Shiv will be debuting a special song and joined by her collaborator on the song James Vincent McMorrow. The forthcoming album is a reflection of the personal upheaval she experienced, including a breakup, leaving a major label, parting ways with her manager, and moving countries. Shiv talks about how studying psychology has influenced her songwriting.Shiv also talks about her influences and we focus on songs from Kanye, James Vincent McMorrow, Dijon, Ari Lennox, and Negro Impacto (see below). The Jameson Connects: The Circle stage at All Together Now features some Nialler9 favourites including Optimo, Just Mustard, The Murder Capital, qbanaa, Aby Coulibaly, Morgano, Sloucho, Rachael Lavelle and more.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon to hear all full episodes, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community.Listen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed Hosted on Acast. On today's episode we're bringing you the second installment of a mini-series of conversations from Zara Hedderman that explore the various practicalities, challenges and, of course, the joys of running a record label in Ireland. In the first episode, we heard from Leitrim-based Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records, who shared great insights into the label's catalog and more, since that episode has come out there's been announcements of exciting forthcoming releases to come from Nyahh so do keep an ear out for them!Today, we make the journey (in our imaginations, at least)  from Leitrim to County Louth, parking up in Dundalk where we'll hear from Joey Edwards - co-founder of Pizza Pizza Records, sound engineer extraordinaire and musician in his own right. Founded in 2018, Pizza Pizza Records, is an independent artist-led label, and it struck gold with its inaugural release Wednesday, the critically acclaimed and Choice Prize nominated debut from Just Mustard. That album not only announced Just Mustard as an act that audiences outside of Ireland were getting excited about, but it immediately asserted Pizza Pizza Record's reputation of a label working with the best in Ireland's independent acts up and down the country and certainly one worthy of being bookmarked to keep up with the buzzing  independent scene. Today, the label's roster has expanded to include Clara Tracey, Elaine Malone, Trick Mist, The Altered Hours, and Larry and Elephant. In this episode, Zara and Joey talk about Wednesday's impact on Pizza Pizza Records and the initial period of operating as a label, how they maintained momentum and how things progressed from that first offering. Notably, Just Mustard have since signed to Partisan Records – with Fontaines DC and Aoife Nessa Frances as labelmates – and Joey, who co-manages the band, reflects on the ways that working with Partisan has inspired different ways to keep Pizza Pizza going sustainably while keeping audiences engaged. In this regard, community and connection – aside from providing a platform for excellent independent Irish artists - were two things Joey kept circling back on when discussing the label's evolution and the general DIY climate both locally and abroad. We touched on the role of physical media given Pizza Pizza's viny-forward MO and its importance within the foundation of DIY communities whether it's finding like-minded people in local record shops or in the queue at the merch table after a gig. You never know where a conversation will take you! Thanks so much for joining us again, and for all your wonderful feedback on the Nyahh Records conversation, it's greatly appreciated. We hope you enjoy learning about Pizza Pizza Records in this episode and maybe afterwards are inspired to set up your own independent label. We'll be back soon, but until then, here's Joey Edwards of Pizza Pizza Records.Featured songs:Larry - Liarhttps://larrymusic.bandcamp.com/album/larryJust Mustard - Deafhttps://justmustard.bandcamp.com/album/wednesdayElaine Malone - My Baby's Dead (Redux)https://elainemalone.bandcamp.com/album/pyrrhic0:00 - Zara Hedderman intro link3:20 - Pizza Pizza Origin and Joey's background in music11:00 - Label Model or inspiration13:00 - First release, Just Mustard's debut album Wednesday19:30 Co-managing Just Mustard, learning from other industry experts25:30 - Changes since Pizza Pizza began in 201827:10 - Vinyl focus for the label33:20 - Creating a sense of community via records35:30 - Discussion on streaming and valuing music38:10 - Elaine Malone43:45 - Advice for other people considering starting a record label

Dublin singer-songwrriter Danny Carroll released his debut solo album I am the Cheese on March 1. He talks through the nine tracks on this TPOE 304. --- Press release: Part of the Dublin music scene for years, Danny Carroll is co-curator of A Litany Of Failures compilation series showcasing independent artists from across Ireland.  Having gigged in various projects, he's opened for kindred spirits such as Jeffrey Lewis and Pavement guitarist Spiral Stairs before the time came to work on his debut solo album. Enlisting the help of Belfast based producer Chris W. Ryan (New Dad, Just Mustard, Robocobra Quartet), the two developed songs with a playful, anything goes approach, with Carroll's songs likened to softer touchstones of indie rock - Silver Jews, Jonathan Richman, and Lee Hazlewood. --- Danny explains: I Am The Cheese is an album I initially recorded with Chris W. Ryan in a week in June 2021. We did this in a terraced house in East Belfast - visited by Carl Eccles on two occasions to play guitar and sing some backing vocals. In the months that followed, Finn McCarthy emailed me bass parts, and I added various bells and whistles to the songs from a flat on North Circular Road in Dublin 7. Laura Ryder also contributed piano to the song Cheesemonger. The drums were performed and recorded by Chris on one day in January 2022 in Start Together Studios. He then mixed the album, and eventually I got it mastered by the late, great John Davis (Blur, The XX, Careerist) who passed away in September 2023. I've sat on the album a long time, in part down due to vinyl pressing, in part due to personal reasons. The mental fortitude it takes to independently 'emerge' and 'unleash' is not always forthcoming. At this point the album feels like a distant document. Nevertheless, it's still something I'm happy to have made for myself. The title is taken from the 1977 Robert Cormier YA novel, which haunted my adolescence. The final lines of the novel refer back to the folk song 'The Farmer In The Dell': "The cheese stands alone. The cheese stands alone. Hi-ho, the derry-o! The cheese stands alone" For a number of reasons it felt fitting to lift that title. credits

We're in the last days of 2022 AD and as such it's time for us to talk about our favourite songs of the year! It's been yet another amazing year for music and each of us could easily have submitted a top 30 on our own rather than keeping it to 10 each, but that would have taken even longer for Colin to edit so thankfully we kept it to 10...We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. There's chat about the latest records from Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood's The Smile project, Everything Everything, Just Mustard, Porridge Radio and Casket Feeder, who Steve also saw live in London as well. Remfry caught both nights of Glassjaw playing their first two albums in full at the Forum in London and Steve waxes lyrical on the Pet Shop Boys greatest hits set in Birmingham. Plus there is chat about BMTH frontman Oli Sykes' claim that he and his band have been misrepresented by the media, Danny Boyle's new Sex Pistols biopic Pistol and a tribute to Depeche Mode's Andy Fletcher who sadly passed away aged 60 last week. Fontaines D.C. - "Roman Holiday" from the 2022 album Skinty Fia on Partisan. In April, Irish post-punkers Fontaines D.C. released their third studio album Skinty Fia. Their first record since relocating to London, the album titleis an Irish phrase that translates to “the damnation of the deer" and delves deep into the minds of transplants reckoning with their feelings around identity and belonging. Our Song of the Day, “Roman Holiday,” really drives that home with a bittersweet ode to discovering a new city while in the midst of young love. One of the many surprsingly downtempo songs on the record, wailing guitars provide a bed for Grian Chatten's wistful croons about weddings, high heels, and getting stoned to lay upon. “‘Roman Holiday' makes me think of the wide streets of north London in the summer and the urge to discover them at night time,” explains Chatten. “The thrill of being a gang of Irish people in London with a bit of a secret language and my first flat with my girlfriend.” Fontaines D.C. will be in Seattle this Saturday, May 14th to play Showbox SoDo with Just Mustard. They'll be stopping by KEXP that afternoon to play a live in-studio at 12:30pm. Watch their 2019 KEXP in-studio performance at the link below. Just Mustard - "I Am You," a 2021 single on Partisan. Irish quintet Just Mustard caught our ears with their powerful noise rock debut Wednesday, an album that earned them a Choice Music Prize nomination for Album of the Year in 2018. Since then, they've signed to Partisan Records and have shared a first look at a sophomore release (projected released: 2022) with today's Song of the Day. The moody, shoegaze-tinged track was produced by the band and mixed by David Wrench (FKA twigs, The xx, Caribou). The accompanying video, directed by Dylan Friese-Greene, captures the song's eerie vibe, with vocals from Katie Ball reminiscent of Alison Shaw of Cranes.  Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking to Charlie Abbott, a member of Arco Arena, an up & coming band from Dundalk. Formed in early 2015, Arco Arena is an Irish four-piece riff-rock band from the currently vibrant music scene of Dundalk, County Louth which has to date spawned such up-and-coming Irish artists such as AE Mak, David Keenan, and Just Mustard. Mixing shifting time signatures with straight-up hooks, described as Queens Of The Stone Age crossed with Northern Irish post-rockers And So I Watch You From Afar their frenetic live shows are a rolling cascade of starting-never-stopping riffs and crowd singalongs. They've performed in prestigious venues all over Ireland from The Spirit Store in Louth and the Roisin Dubh in Galway to The Workmans Club in Dublin. With the release of their latest single ''Docker Martins'' the future looks extremely bright for Arco Arena in 2020 Arco Arena Instagram https://www.instagram.com/arcoarenaband/?hl=en Blah Blah Studio Instagram https://www.instagram.com/blahblahstudio_ www.blahblah.ie
