Xapo Bank's Joey Garcia joins the show and shares the challenges of running a Bitcoin focused bank and why even die hard Bitcoiners still need a bank, from yield on Bitcoin to access to fiat. A must-listen episode if you're interested in the conversations that industry leaders, policymakers and regulators need to have to start building the infrastructure for thriving crypto hubs globally. Joey also discusses: → The challenges with fractional banking and Xapo's growing presence in emerging markets. → The growing need to align traditional banking standards with the crypto ecosystem and the importance of increased collaboration between the two sectors. → Constructive feedback on the EU's MICA regulation. → Why relying on only a handful of banks for crypto activity poses significant risks to the entire ecosystem. → How smaller jurisdictions like Gibraltar or the UAE can play a valuable role in positioning themselves as crypto hubs. → How a principles-based approach to regulation that accounts for crypto's unique characteristics could create a more secure and adaptable ecosystem.
"The former Speaker predicts "The dollar will suffer a major confidence shock” and as a result asks, “What can be done?” His immediate answer is to “start by taking stablecoins seriously.” Dollar-backed stablecoins are arriving as “an important net purchaser of U.S. government debt,” with stablecoin issuers now the 18th largest holder of US Debt. Ryan goes on to say that “if fiat-backed dollar stablecoin issuers were a country,” that nation “would sit just outside the top 10 in countries holding Treasurys,” still less than Hong Kong but “larger than Saudi Arabia,” our former partner in the petrodollar system."~Mark Goodwin & Whitney Webb In the shadowy world where finance meets technology, a select group of powerful players are shaping the future of money itself. From the founding of Visa to the halls of Harvard and the US Treasury, follow the intricate web connecting Wences Casares' bitcoin vault Xapo to Wall Street giants and former government officials. Wences Casares is credited with bringing Bitcoin to Silicon Valley. He also founded XAPO Bank, which manages the largest quantity of Bitcoin in the world (an estimated $10 billion in underground vaults on five continents). In this episode, Ric and Wences discuss Wences' journey from Patagonia to Silicon Valley, the future of Bitcoin, and the true cost of leading disruption. This is 3 Things, with Wences Casares. Mauricio Magaldi and Cuy Sheffield are back this week, this time talking all things USDC settlement, CBDCs and the difference between CBDCs and stablecoins. Following our discussion around the development of stablecoin in our last episode, we thought it would be fitting to dive deeper into another type of digital currency that is closely related to fiat, CBDC, or Central Bank Digital Currency. Banks are looking to CBDCs as a form of currency that expedites transactions and increases the security of payments between banks, institutions, and individuals and we look at the biggest news stories and developments around the world for CBDCs. Not only that but Visa has some news of its own: Just last week, Visa expanded its use of US Dollar Coin (USDC) for digital currency settlement, adding pilot programs globally with WorldPay, Nuvei, and Xapo, modernising large value, cross-border payments, for end-to-end digital currency settlement over blockchain. We get into that and much more! We are also joined by some amazing guests: * Dante Disparte, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global Policy at Circle * Mina Khattak, Senior Director of Crypto, at Worldpay * Catherine Gu, Head of CBDC & Protocols, Visa Just a quick reminder - nothing we share here is legal, tax or financial advice. Views or opinions expressed by the panel are their own and do not necessarily reflect the view of the entities they are representing. This episode is sponsored by Visa. This episode is brought to you by Visa, one of the world's leaders in digital payments. Crypto has opened up a new world of possibilities, and Visa's helping everyone take part. Consumers now can enjoy the freedom and flexibility of using their Visa crypto-linked cards for everyday purchases at millions of Visa-accepting merchant locations around the world. Everything you Need to Know About Blockchain-Based Payment Systems Napster evolved into Spotify, Skype evolved to Whatsapp Calls and Facetime, even speaking to a teller at a bank has evolved into the ATMs and internet banking, but the payment industry seemingly hasn't progressed much in the last century and in our latest episode, host Ian Andrews sits down with Joey Garcia, Director and Head of Public Affairs, Policy, Regulatory Affairs at Xapo Bank, who explains why. Joey shares his early days involved in digital asset regulation in Gibraltar and how Xapo Bank is bridging the gap between traditional banking and blockchain-based payment settlement systems. He shares the promise of stablecoins in the future of the digital asset landscape and how the defunct Facebook Libra / Diem project may have paved the way for thoughtful contributions to the EU's MiCA Regulation. He touches on grassroots adoption and use cases in Africa and LATAM and tries to shine a light on where DeFi will land when it comes to regulatory oversight. Minute-by-minute episode breakdown (2:25) - Joey Garcia's crypto journey and discussion on the early days of cryptocurrency regulation in Gibraltar (5:15) - Evolution of technology and Xapo Bank's role as a bridge between traditional banking and blockchain-based payment settlement systems (11:45) -Discussion of CBDC's, USDC stablecoin, blockchain-based payments and everything in between (14:37) - Explanation of fractional banking and how Xapo offers interest on crypto held in custody (17:45) - Understanding the business models of VASPs above and beyond just AML and Compliance (22:45) -Is MiCA the GDPR of virtual asset regulations? (26:59) -Overview of the development of digital asset regulation in different regions and the impact the Libra project had on such regulations (32:15) - One stablecoin to rule them all? (35:25) - What is the main factor behind grassroots crypto adoption in Africa and LATAM? (37:45) - Where does DeFi fit into the future of digital assets and blockchain technology? Today's podcast is a letter I found going viral on twitter by Samantha Messing. Here is the letter: https://medium.com/@samanthamessing/why-progressives-should-love-bitcoin-an-open-letter-to-senator-elizabeth-warren-176ab5cc9229 I enjoyed the letter and thought it deserved more exposure and to be read aloud. Text below. ---- Dear Senator Warren, I am a fan. I think you are very smart, and you genuinely care about building a more equitable society. But respectfully, when you talk about Bitcoin, you sound silly. Bitcoin is not powered by a “shadowy faceless group of super coders.” It is not a “scam,” it is not “bogus private digital money,” it is not “highly opaque,” and it is not built to “assist criminals.” Rather, Bitcoin is the most democratized form of money ever created. Nobody owns or controls Bitcoin, and everyone can take part. Bitcoin is a monetary instrument that does not require trust in governments to not inflate away the value of money or trust in banks to stay solvent. Bitcoin was founded in 2008, amidst the global financial crisis, by a person or persons under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The creation of Bitcoin was a noble endeavor. Satoshi is among the richest people in the world, and yet, Satoshi's Bitcoin remains untouched (and unspent). We know this because Bitcoin runs on an open source blockchain. Every transaction is recorded on a public, transparent, decentralized ledger. Bitcoin adoption, as measured by the number of people who own Bitcoin, is growing faster than internet adoption. However, the commercialization of the internet was the ultimate insider's game. Rich white men, venture capitalists, and favored institutional investors got in early. By contrast, since its birth, Bitcoin has been available to anyone with a cell phone. Eleven years ago, the cryptocurrency market did not exist. Today, the market capitalization of the cryptocurrency market exceeds $2 trillion. This incredible wealth creation has benefitted individuals, not institutions, particularly the unbanked and disenfranchised. It is a beautiful progressive story. Your voters own Bitcoin. A recent Harris Poll survey found that 30 percent of Black and 27 percent of Hispanic investors in the United States own cryptocurrency, compared to 17 percent of white investors. The same survey found that most Black and Hispanic Americans consider Bitcoin's decentralization to be a positive attribute. Is it any surprise that people who have been most oppressed by the state find appeal in a stateless money? Your voters are rejecting the legacy financial system because it fosters economic and racial injustice and perpetuates wealth inequality. Throughout the globe, most people have suffered through currency collapses. As an example, Argentina, Brazil, China, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, South Africa, and Lebanon have had one or more currency debasement cycles over the last four decades. Incompetent and corrupt monetary policies steal the fruits of people's hard work, or “life energy.” By contrast, Bitcoin has a fixed and pre-determined monetary policy. Trusting Bitcoin means trusting math, and billions of people are embracing Bitcoin for this very reason. Bitcoin represents a monetary life raft to the world's inhabitants. Nigeria offers a great case study of Bitcoin's promise and utility. Political repression, currency controls, and rampant inflation have turned Nigerians into “minimum-wage slaves.” Because of hyperinflation, they must spend their paltry wages today or risk losing their purchasing power. Time preference is a luxury they do not have. As the Nigerian naira plummets in value, Bitcoin has become a necessity. 32 percent of Nigerians own Bitcoin, the highest percentage in the world. Furthermore, remittances into Nigeria exceeded $17 billion in 2020, and a substantial proportion of this value is conveyed in Bitcoin. Lastly, Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world, and, on a globe basis, this progressive cohort increasingly embraces Bitcoin. To quote NYDIG Executive Chairman Ross Stevens, “Bitcoin is hope.” It is hope for your voters. It is hope for people all over the world. Bitcoin's decentralized, transparent, democratic network will inevitably replace the failed, corrupt partnership between governments and large banks. Importantly, Bitcoin's decentralization is not — as you say — a “fantastical narrative,” with miners and corporations flaunting “false moral superiority” when they are, like banks, “the true power brokers.” Senator, facts are a stubborn thing. Let me show you the folly of your words. The Bitcoin Fork Wars of 2016–2017 bitterly divided the Bitcoin community into big blockers and small blockers. The former wanted to increase the block size to increase transaction throughput. The latter opposed the change as it would have made the Bitcoin network less decentralized. Corporate interests, including Coinbase, Digital Currency Group, Xapo, Bitgo, and the largest Bitcoin miners, joined forces to fight for larger blocks. The small blockers, a collective of “Mom and Pop” holders of Bitcoin, resisted this top-down change and defended the existing decentralization. A virtual civil war ensued. The people won. The establishment lost. Most importantly, progressive ideas prevailed. Digital money is here. We have two choices. First, a technology-based money like the Chinese digital yuan where the state has absolute power, and citizens have zero privacy. A system, I might add, where hard-earned savings can be zapped out of bank accounts at the government's whim. The second option is a decentralized stateless global currency — Bitcoin — where anyone with a cell phone is sovereign over their money. This option offers rules without rulers and financial freedom for all. Like you, I am a progressive. I believe in smart regulation regarding investor protection, anti-money laundering, and tax collection. Let's regulate Bitcoin through the prism of wanting it to succeed. Sadly, your misguided position on Bitcoin hurts the people you tirelessly fight for. I am comforted by the fact that you cannot stop Bitcoin's rise. However, you might be able to slow adoption. If you succeed, who benefits? I will tell you. The winners will be the biggest banks in the world. They are terrified of Bitcoin as evidenced by Jamie Dimon's recent annual shareholder letter. Senator Warren — do you really want to do Mr. Dimon's bidding…because you sounded like a J.P. Morgan lobbyist at the recent Senate Banking Committee hearing. I love Bitcoin. If you truly understood Bitcoin, you would love it too. To that end, I have attached a recommended syllabus of insightful Bitcoin content. Bitcoin offers equal access which will inevitably foster more equal outcomes. Bitcoin will make the world a better place. What's more progressive than that? We're revisiting some of the best Crypto Conversation podcast episodes of 2020. In this episode, we talk with Torsten Hoffmann a documentary filmmaker. His new film Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet is now available online. Why you should listen: After writing a research paper on alternative currencies as part of his MBA at Oxford University, Torsten was intrigued by Bitcoin. In 2014 he started working on Bitcoin: The End of Money As We Know it, his first documentary. Hoffmann's award-winning first film looks at Bitcoin in the context of the history of money. His new film, Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet is a bigger budget, ambitious follow up that takes a 360 wide-angle approach to the technology that may define Web 3.0. “Since the release of the first film, the industry has grown by a factor of 100. Bitcoin has been called one of the most disruptive technologies of our time. However, media coverage is often misinformed and the general public is still confused about the technology and its implications,” says Hoffmann. “Can this technology, designed to operate independent of trust and within a decentralized network, really provide a robust alternative? Or are cryptocurrencies just as unfairly distributed, easily manipulated, and dangerous as our current systems? That was my starting point.” Key takeaway: Filmed over two years Torsten says the new documentary has three arcs. "First we look at Bitcoin, then we look at the ecosystem, public / private blockchains and ICOs, and then we look forward at the potential of blockchain to unlock Web 3.0." He interviewed some of the ecosystem's biggest brains and biggest egos including Andreas Antonopoulos, Roger Ver, Charlie Lee, Samson Mow, Craig Wright, Preethi Kasireddy, and Wences Casares. While the film has a global feel, with filming taking place on four continents in cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Switzerland, and Melbourne, Hoffmann says the highlight of the filming schedule was being granted access to the Xapo vault located in a top secret location buried deep in the Swiss mountains. Founded by Bitcoin entrepreneur Wences Casares, the Xapo vault is a decommissioned military bunker dug into the mountainside in a remote part of Switzerland. Its exact location is secret, and access is protected by a complex series of security measures. “The bunker scene was a highlight and we are the only film crew to be allowed inside. Allegedly up to 10% of all Bitcoin private keys are stored in the Xapo vault. It was a James Bond style adventure to get clearance and film inside the bunker,” said Hoffmann. 🚀 Suscríbete a nuestro Canal: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBiA... 00:00 Sumario 0:28 Expert Sessions 0:51 Primera Noticia 1:37 Segunda Noticia 2:30 Tercera Noticia 3:26 Cuarta Noticia 4:25 Quinta Noticia 5:45 Cierre #Transferencia #Ballena #Bitcoin #Blockchain #Criptomonedas 📲¡Descárgate la APP! https://bit2me.com/download Compra y vende Bitcoin , Ethereum , Litecoin , Dash, Bitcoin Cash , Ripple y otras criptomonedas . Today's episode will cover events happening the week ending August 7th, 2020. We will be talking about a potential new BCH split, a 51% attack on ETC, a whale of a Bitcoin transfer, and the Twitter hacker has been revealed – we'll discuss how his identity was discovered! More @ Talk.Bitcoin.Tax @(00:39) A Possible New BCH Fork @(03:42) Attack(s) on ETC @(05:02) Bitcoin billionaire Transfer @(06:02) Twitter Hacker Revealed Full Show Notes: (00:39) First up, Bitcoin Cash (BCH). For those unfamiliar, Bitcoin Cash is a cryptocurrency that exists as a result of an August 2017 fork from the original Bitcoin. Subsequently, in 2018, BCH was forked into two different versions of the coin; for all intents and purposes, these two resulting coins are named Bitcoin ABC (Adjustable Blocksize Cap) and Bitcoin SV (Satoshi's Vision). It can be a bit confusing but, as Coinmarketcap says, “Bitcoin ABC became the dominant chain and took over the BCH ticker”. So, when we discuss BCH, we are referring to Bitcoin ABC. Bitcoin SV is referred to as BSV. Both the 2017 and 2018 forks were largely a result of disagreements among the miners, developers, and supporters of the cryptocurrency and the underlying blockchain technology. BCH, historically then, is somewhat fraught with disagreement between camps. The history here matters because it seems to be potentially repeating itself once again, and a new BCH fork is possible (depending on who you ask). On Thursday, Amaury Séchet, a leading developer of BCH, released a blog post detailing the plan for a November 2020 Bitcoin Cash Network Upgrade. The plan lists “two primary improvements… a change to the Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm…[and]…the addition of a new Coinbase Rule…[which states that] all newly mined blocks must contain an output assigning 8% of the newly mined coins to a specified address.” According to Séchet, the rule “fully aligns the incentives of Bitcoin ABC with the sustainability and security of the network…[and] ensures that those developers risk the immediate loss of their own wealth should they make decisions that harm the overall value and validity of the network.” Séchet closes his plan by stating “While some may prefer that Bitcoin ABC did not implement this improvement, this announcement is not an invitation for debate”. This did not sit well with everyone involved in BCH and day later, on Friday, a joint statement was released by a “group of notable BCH miners”. The statement says “With ABC's new proposal… it appears they are not interested in further discussion. In the interest of mutual respect, we will honor their wishes and will no longer engage in debates. Our group has already completed the process of switching to BCHN. We have been testing and running BCHN and find that it offers technical superiority in functionality and for block creation compared to Bitcoin ABC. With the existence of BCHN as a mining node, we do not expect any sensible miner to choose to receive 8% less mining revenue.” The TLDR here is that another split could be occurring, which would again potentially result in two types of BCH – this this case, it seems as though the split coins would be dubbed Bitcoin ABC (the Séchet camp) and Bitcoin Cash Node (BCHN, the miners opposed to the aforementioned “improvements”). We'll stay on top of any developments in the story – with the planned BCH November upgrade quickly approaching, the developments are occurring rapidly. By time this episode has released, the two camps may come to a compromise, or…maybe a new camp will emerge! — (03:42) On the topic of forked coins, last week, a classic 51% attack occurred on Ethereum Classic (ETC). This week, it was revealed that 807k ETC worth $5.6 million was stolen in the attack. According to a report by blockchain analyst and CTO of Bitquery Aleksey Studnev, the attacker spent 17.5 BTC, or $192,000, in order to acquire the hash power for the attack. To make things even worse, another attack occurred on Thursday, where 238,306 ETC, worth $1.68 million, was reportedly stolen as well. For those who are unfamiliar with a 51% attack, it is when more than 50% of a network's mining power is controlled by one entity (or group of miners). This control allows for double-spending of a coin – so an attacker can sell a coin for fiat without actually disposing of the coin. These attacks could certainly spell trouble for ETC, however, the price of ETC does not seem to be very affected by these attacks. On July 31st, 1 ETC was worth around $7.50 and as of recording, ETC is sitting at around $7. For such a major attack, one would assume investors in ETC would grow weary, affecting its value. Will we see the price of ETC dip even further over the weekend as a result of these attacks? We will certainly find out! — (05:02) Next up, according to the Twitter Account @Whale Alert, a whopping 92,857 BTC, worth nearly 1.1 billion USD was transferred Thursday morning from one wallet to another. According to Daily Hodl, this transaction only cost .0003 BTC, or $3.55. The wallet that held the massive amount of BTC was the second-larger BTC wallet in existence, and the receiving wallet is now the third-largest BTC address. The first largest address, according to Bit Info Charts, has 255,502 BTC – which is almost 3 billion USD worth of BTC. As of now, the transfer doesn't have any explicit implications for BTC or the community. The Daily Hodl states that the sending wallet belongs to the crypto custody giant Xapo, and that the transfer could simply be “Xapo shifting around its crypto on behalf of customers or for security purposes”. Regardless of the implications, the miniscule fee and the gargantuan amount transferred are certainly testament to the utility of crypto. — (06:02) Our last story involves the notorious Twitter hack that occurred in July. The main suspect involved in the attack was revealed to be 17 year old from Florida. The 17 year old reportedly used phone-based social engineering to gain access Twitter's backend, allowing them to access a “god-mode” type control panel which gave them the ability to have total control of Twitter accounts. He was allegedly assisted by two other suspects, one from Orlando and one from the UK. The Justice Department released the criminal complaint document filed by IRS CI agent Tigran Gambaryan, which lists the steps that were taken in order to ascertain the identity of these individuals. In summary, the attacker had advertised, and attempted to sell, his access to the Twitter accounts on Discord and on a forum called OGUsers. Gambaryan was able to access these Discord chats via a warrant and was able to access the OGUsers forum database (including IP addresses, private messages, and user emails) due to an April 2020 hack that made it publicly accessible. Gambaryan analyzed wallet addresses associated with the hack and wallet addresses involved with the Discord and OGUsers messages, and was able to link them together. In addition, the email on OGUsers that was used by one of the suspects was the same email he used to set up his Coinbase account, which provided the suspect's identity. For all of the potential damage caused by the Twitter hack, the swift detainment of the individuals involved, and the fairly simplistic process used to catch them, shows that potentially devasting cyber security attacks are possible from even the smallest vulnerabilities. A 17 year-old and his two accomplices masterminded the attack and made a number of mistakes which led to their arrest – it's not hard to imagine the damage that could be done by a professional group looking to cause serious trouble.

Torsten Hoffmann is a documentary filmmaker who has completed two full length blockchain films. Bitcoin: The End Of Money As We Know It from 2015, and his new film Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet which is now available online. That was my starting point.” Key takeaway: Filmed over two years Hoffmann says the new documentary has three arcs. What if your idea is so radical that people have trouble grasping what it is – or even believing it won't harm them? Every founder believes their product is revolutionary – and the more revolutionary their product, the more reassuring they’ll need to be to get consumers on board. No one knows this better than Wences Casares, the trailblazing entrepreneur credited with bringing crypto to Silicon Valley (and convincing Reid himself). With his unicorn start up Xapo, a Bitcoin wallet, Wences aims to reassure the masses that Bitcoin isn’t as different – or as dangerous – as they may think. Cameo appearances: Linda Rottenberg (Endeavor), Anne Wojcicki (23andMe).

Greylock Partner Reid Hoffman, and Wences Casares, Greylock portfolio company CEO and founder of Xapo, are back for their second conversation. This time to discuss how blitzscaling works when you’re not in Silicon Valley or China. In this episode of Greymatter, Wences and Reid talk about some of the learnings and tools he’s found that help him make remote work at Xapo more effective (Xapo has 275 employees scattered across 62 different countries). Wences explains how he uses always-on Zoom videoconferencing to implement a virtual “open door” policy that generates serendipitous meetings between employees on different continents, and why hiring employees without ever seeing their face or hearing their voice is actually a competitive advantage.
Greylock Partner Reid Hoffman, and Wences Casares, Greylock portfolio company CEO and founder of Xapo, discuss what diverse entrepreneurial ecosystems like Argentina can teach Silicon Valley. This episode of Greymatter digs into how assumptions about the world that hold true in America don’t in most other places around the globe. It also explores how being outside of Silicon Valley helped Wences realize early on the importance of a global, nation-independent, reliable monetary ecosystem, and the story that led Wences to become a Bitcoin user and investor. It also explores how childhood and family can prepare you for life as a tech entrepreneur.

I had the chance to interview one of the greatest crypto artists of all time, Cryptograffiti. We discussed his latest work and what motivates him in the space. You can find his work at: https://cryptograffiti.com Twitter: @cryptograffiti cryptograffiti has been creating cryptocurrency-related art since 2012. His work is dedicated to spreading the crypto movement. cryptograffiti was the first to explore how cryptocurrencies could benefit artists through alternative revenue channels. In one such experiment, he juxtaposed a public-facing wallet with street art allowing passersby to send bitcoin in support of the pieces. cryptograffiti’s current work repurposes materials from industries being disrupted by the blockchain. These materials will shortly become scarce even though the monetary systems from which they were derived are not. By incorporating these soon-to-be extinct artifacts in his work, he teaches others about the advantages of cryptocurrencies vs the status quo banking sector. Looking forward, he is excited at how blockchain technology will transform the art world and to play a role in leading this new direction. cryptograffiti’s work has been featured in Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, International Business Times, VICE, CNNMoney, Bitcoin Magazine, CoinDesk, Art Daily, World Crypto Network, Bitcoin.com, CoinJournal, CryptoCoinsNews, CoinTelegraph, Bitcoinist, Inside Bitcoins, Free Talk Live, The Tatiana Show, SF Weekly and other media outlets. He has exhibited at Satoshi Roundtable, CoinDesk Consensus, CoinDesk Construct, LaBitConf, Coin Center's Annual Dinner, The d10e Conference, Digital Garage’s New Context Conference, Distributed, The Blockchain Supper Club, BlockCon, Proof of Art, and Blockchain for Good. His work is in the collections of Blockstream, Ledger, Blockchain Capital, Kraken, Pantera Capital, Shapeshift, Binary Financial, Digital Currency Group, Wachsman PR, Ribbit Capital, Xapo, eToro, The Montreal Bitcoin Embassy, TokenSoft, Jesse Powell, Wences Casares, Matthew Roszak, Brock Pierce, Erik Voorhees, Dan Morehead, WhalePanda, Brad & Bart Stephens, Jill Carlson, Marc Andreessen, Matt Corallo, Brian Hoffman, Charlie Shrem, Mike Novogratz, Linda Xie, Samson Mow, Francis Pouliot, Ted Rogers, Jason King, Marshall Hayner, and other notable figures within the space.

Growing up in Argentina, Wences Casares saw his family lose all their money three times due to actions by the government. The so-called "patient zero" of Bitcoin in Silicon Valley explains why he believes that experience predisposed him to seeing the potential in Bitcoin earlier than most people, why it's so hard to explain Bitcoin to Americans and why the company he founded, Xapo, isn't just a Bitcoin vault and wallet company but his best effort at helping to ensure that Bitcoin succeeds. He talks about why he isn't scared of all the new competitors to his service, including Coinbase Custody, why Xapo hasn't branched out into any other crypto assets, and why he believes there's a more than 50% chance that Bitcoin is worth $1 million in five to ten years. Additionally, he still believes the attempt to accommodate more transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain with the SegWit2x fork, which he backed, was wrong -- even though the fees after its failure skyrocketed to as high as $60. Plus -- he reveals what it would look like if Bitcoin became a global standard of value, and why that vision doesn't threaten governments. Thank you to our sponsors! Interview location: London, UKInterview date: Mon 18th Jun 2018The institutional relationship with Crypto Assets has been one of light touch. Where banks had been dismissive of Bitcoin, but open to the opportunities with blockchain, the demand from institutional investors has contributed towards the changing banking narrative towards Crypto. There is growing demand from institutional investors to hold Crypto Assets within their portfolio, yet these assets present new challenges from custody to regulation. Still, the need is driving forward a growing industry of solutions for those who want exposure to the market.Institutions hold the capital but want to avoid the risk of handling the asset, but with companies such as XAPO and BitGo offering institutional custody solutions and the likes of Coinbase and Grayscale offering products which expose investors to the class without the headache of buying, selling and managing, institutions now have viable options to invest in the market. The banking sector is adapting; Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan have opened trading desks, and the crypto market has gone from enemy to friend. As Crypto Asset and blockchain innovation continues to move at pace, investors do not want to miss out on the opportunity within these market. With over $1.5bn in crypto assets under management ($3bn before the crash in January), Grayscale is one of the leading companies providing products for institutional investors. Their range of Single Product Investment Trusts and Diversified Large Cap Fund allow institutional investors to place bets on the Crypto market without the risk of custody or challenges associated with buying and selling.Michael Sonnenshein knows both sides of the market. His career started in the traditional banking sector as an analyst at Barclays before he moved to JP Morgan and then onto Grayscale in 2013, where he is now the Managing Director. In this interview, we discuss the interest from institutional investors, the impact of the bear market on sentiment and how Grayscale handles custody for $1.5bn in assets under management.-----If you enjoy The What Bitcoin Did Podcast you can help support the show my doing the following:Become a Patron and get access to shows early or help contributeMake a tip:Bitcoin: 3FiC6w7eb3dkcaNHMAnj39ANTAkv8Ufi2SQR Codes: Bitcoin | Ethereum | Litecoin | Monero | ZCash | RipplecoinIf you do send a tip then please email me so that I can say thank youSubscribe on iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | SoundCloud | YouTube | TuneIn | RSS FeedLeave a review on iTunesShare the show and episodes with your friends and familySubscribe to the newsletter on my websiteFollow me on Twitter Personal | Twitter Podcast | Instagram | Medium | YouTubeIf you are interested in sponsoring the show, you can read more about that here or please feel free to drop me an email to discuss options.

Mike Novogratz, the founder and CEO of Galaxy Digital Capital Management, talks about the recently announced Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index, why it's limited to just 12 cryptos, how traditional financial players know more about crypto than people believe they do, and how "the herd" is coming. He discusses the biggest obstacles to institutional money entering the space, how their entry will affect trading opportunities and and which types of stablecoins he believes are most promising. He also talks about why he's not very sanguine about custody solutions from Coinbase, why the market might go sideways for a while and why he wishes he'd invested in Telegram. Love Unchained? Please take this extremely brief survey to help us find more sponsors: https://survey.libsyn.com/unchained Growing up in Argentina, Wences Casares saw his family lose all their money three times due to actions by the government. Simon Shares Curro (JSE code: COH) were mixed but mostly good. The lower priced schools struggled and the tertiary are still getting off the ground and will be unbundled in September. But for a stock on a PE of some 100x HEPS growth of just 22% is way to low. Anchor Group (JSE code: ACG) results were as expected from their trading update - a massive disappointment. Last March I was expecting HEPS of 100c for this financial year and they just did 22c (down 39%) and will be hard pressed to do 50c HEPS for the year. That said, 50c HEPS puts them on a forward PE of around 10x, not bad but frankly Coronation (JSE code: CML) with a dividend yield of some 6.5% looking much more attractive. PPC (JSE code: PPC) woes continue as the share trades at 1999 levels. Yip zero price profit this century if you've been holding the stock. This after a high of 5300c in 2007. So now everybody wants to buy, but there's no rush (if at all). Wait for a doubling of price before considering an entry. Famous Brands* (JSE code: FBR) update shows very modest like for like growth but this statement worries me "To date, certain of the new UK stores opened since acquisition have not met sales projections.". Up coming events; JSE Power Hour: Getting trading right with Trader Petri The Traders Life: The process with IG and Simon Brown JSE Power Hour: Disruptions or Innovation * I hold ungeared positions. Back to Bitcoin I did a Bitcoin (code: BTC) podcast in March and nobody cared . Another in June and interest was still modest. Now it booming and everybody wants in? Is it too late? No idea. Is it going to crash? No idea. How high will it go? No idea. What is Bitcoin? It is not a currency, it is if anything a commodity. It pays no dividends and can buy things but remember sea shells have been used to buy things in the past. For those wanting to buy Bitcoin, Magda Wierzycka )CEO of Sygnia) recommends using Luno locally (albeit it internal so only market within SA and hence price not always reflective of other exchange prices). Or use an offshore exchange (using your annual R10million offshore allowance) via Kraken or Xapo. Here's a trick, there is no central exchange for Bitcoin, so what's the price? Also no regulator and we have seen exchanges crash, be hacked and go bust. So this is fairly wild west out there. Oft wartet man deshalb 2-5 Verifikationen ab. Hello, welcome to episode 23 of The Bitcoin Game, I'm Rob Mitchell. I decided to experiment with buying Bitcoin a new way; I bought shares of the Bitcoin Investment Trust. The trust is the first, and I believe the only current way a U.S. citizen can add an investment in Bitcoin to a recognized retirement account. You can buy shares of the Bitcoin Investment Trust with symbol GBTC using a standard brokerage account, just like buying a stock or ETF. You could argue that one doesn't actually own Bitcoin with these shares, since a third party holds the private keys, and there are inherent risks — just ask Patrick Byrne. But the fund, and this episode, are likely skewed slightly towards people interested in investing in Bitcoin for the long term, using an investing platform they are already familiar with, while shielding themselves from the learning curve still required to hold Bitcoin securely. In today's episode I speak with Michael Sonnenshein, director of Sales & Business Development for Grayscale, one of several companies founded by Barry Silbert. Based on Grayscale's first quarter financials, the total number of Bitcoin Investment Trust shares sold was approximately 1.41 million, which has a value of over $37 million dollars (at the current rate of $265/Bitcoin). Potential fund buyers need to make sure they understand the risks associated with Bitcoin, investing in Bitcoin using a fund, as well as the fees and premiums that are associated with buying this fund. Would you ever buy shares of the Bitcoin Investment Trust, or recommend it? Please let me know your thoughts by commenting below! 7/19/16 Update: For anyone who bought GBTC (Bitcoin Investment Trust) back when this episode aired, the gains have substantially surpassed a 100% investment in Bitcoin. I will go on a limb and say this is because the demand for GBTC has been a lot greater than the supply (probably due to mainstream and retirement investors wanting Bitcoin exposure). So the market price of GBTC is way above the net asset value of the Bitcoin that the trust holds. With two new Bitcoin ETFs expected in coming months/years, it's possible that new Bitcoin investment vehicles will cool off the demand for GBTC, so I'm not sure if buying GBTC on the open market is wise at current values. However, if you're a "qualified investor" who is up for a large initial investment and year waiting period, you can buy GBTC at par with the current price of Bitcoin, so that may be a smarter investment (if you believe in Bitcoin, and don't think we'll have a financial/societal "reset" before then). Of course, anything could happen to Bitcoin and/or GBTC. And be very aware, I'm definitely not an investment advisor, this is just my amateur read of the situation.
