Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur and religions reporter Canaan Lidor join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode. The razing of Khan Al-Ahmar has become something of a symbolic battle for many since demolition orders were first issued in 2009. Rettig Gur describes the hamlet and delves deep into the many-sided issue, following the High Court of Justice's decision to let the government decide on the timing of its demolition. Two years ago, the world watched with horror as we heard the news of the loss of 45 lives, many of them children, in a crush in a crowd at Mount Meron during Lag B'Omer celebrations. Lidor spoke with several family members who say that today, they feel even more connected to the place. Ahead of tonight's celebrations, we hear what new safety measures have been implemented since the disaster two years ago. Discussed articles include: High Court rejects petition seeking immediate razing of Khan al-Ahmar On Meron disaster anniversary, relatives of victims connect to the site ‘even more' Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Walter's: First ever programme to educate his listeners. Learn Why? How: Bedouins are used as pawns and second class citizens by the Palestinian Authority. Why: Our legal system, based on Ottoman, British, and Jordanian laws is confusing, outdated and discriminates against our Jewish citizens. How: The EU, the European Union, finances, supplies and illegally erects housing structures for Bedouins, and threatens legal action if Israel would dare to remove them. More About: The PA's policy of inviting Bedouins to settle in strategic locations of area ‘C' to establish facts on the ground in preparation for a Palestinian State and to hinder Jewish settlement. Learn: About the Palestinian Authority's flagship outpost of Khan al Ahmar and the long running government's refusal to comply with time-table set by the Supreme Court order, to demolish or relocate it.. Also: More pro-Arab discrimination on farm land and grazing rights. And : How the Gulf States realised the importance of Israel in the greater scheme of world politics and formed the Abraham Accords, that are widening slowly, leaving the “Palestinians” out in the cold, pondering their future. The Walter Bingham File 28FEB2023 - PODCAST
• A proposed juridical reform that would give more power to the ruling coalition is causing strong divisions inside Israel. Is the reform needed and should it be done differently?• Israel has sent 450 persons to help victims of the earthquake in Turkey – It is the decidedly largest and most professional of all aid-groups, but the demand and the suffering is beyond description.• Barcelona cuts all institutional ties with Israel – a lesson in hypocrisy.• Even this government asks for extension for removing illegal Bedouin settlement of Chan al-Ahmar – an almost surreal request.• This week's Torah portion is called Yitro and deals, interestingly, with the justice system in Moses' days.
The state asked the High Court of Justice on Wednesday for another four-month extension before responding to a petition that was filed to the court asking it to oblige the government to execute demolition and eviction orders for Khan al-Ahmar, the Bedouin Palestinian encampment on the road to Jericho. Sources close to the prime minister said the delay was because of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit, and because of the coming Muslim month of Ramadan. Professor Dan Turner from Jerusalem's Shaare Tsedek hospital lives on the settlement of Kfar Adumim, next to Khan al Ahmar , and has been active working together with the villagers to find a solution to the relocation order. KAN's Mark Weiss asked him for his reaction to the state request for a further extension. (Photo: Courtesy)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The government has asked the High Court of Justice for an additional 4-month extension to consider the court order to destroy the illegal West Bank Bedouin hamlet of Khan al-Ahmar. This is the 9th time the government has asked for an extension since the court approved the demolition of the village. The move comes despite several of the far-right members of the new government — including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir petitioning for the evacuation to be carried out and criticizing delays requested by previous governments. We spoke with Naomi Kahn, the director of the international division at the right-wing NGO Regavim, which petitioned the court to destroy Khan al-Ahmar.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
*) US to lose neutrality if OKs Greece's F35s, rejects Türkiye's F16s: Kalin The US will lose its "neutrality" in NATO if the Congress approves the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Greece and opposes Türkiye's F-16 purchase. This is what Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin has said. Kalin also said Türkiye will not accept any preconditions, such as ratification of Sweden and Finland's NATO bid, for the F-16 programme. Ankara has maintained the jets would strengthen not only Türkiye, but also NATO. *) Netanyahu says Israel is considering weapons aid to Ukraine Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he is considering military aid to Ukraine and even willing to serve as a mediator, after the US called for Tel Aviv's more active role. For now, Netanyahu made no firm commitments to Ukraine. Israel has preserved a relationship with Russia, which controls the skies in neighbouring Syria and has turned a blind eye to Tel Aviv's strikes on targets of Iran. *) US-India alliance look to challenge China The US has formally launched a partnership with India that President Joe Biden hopes will help the two countries compete against China. The White House is looking to engage with New Delhi for cooperation in areas of military equipment, semiconductors and artificial intelligence. The US and India have emerged as natural allies to counter China's rising influence, not only in the region but also globally. *) The case of fake medicines in Africa's Sahel region Up to 50 percent of medicines in West Africa are substandard or fake, the UN has warned in a report on the illicit trade in medical products. The global body said it can lead to antimicrobial resistance or toxic contaminants while undermining trust in healthcare systems. Across sub-Saharan Africa, up to $44.7 million per year is spent on treating people who have used counterfeit or substandard malaria treatments. And finally… *) Palestinians protest Israeli plans to demolish Bedouin homes Dozens of Palestinians and foreign activists are staging a sit-in to protest Israeli plans to demolish the Khan al Ahmar Bedouin community in occupied East Jerusalem. A representative of the Khan al Ahmar residents tells Anadolu Agency their protest is aimed at confronting Israeli plans to forcibly displace the residents of the community. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right government had a Wednesday deadline to present its demolition plan to the Supreme Court.
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Legal affairs correspondent Jeremy Sharon and diaspora and religion writer Judah Ari Gross join host Jessica Steinberg for today's podcast. Sharon explains the complex legal situation unfolding with the barring of Shas leader Aryeh Deri from the government as a cabinet minister and what he would need to be reinstated. Gross looks at a conference of left-wing religious Jews gathering together for the first time, as this grassroots movement bands together from across the religious spectrum. Sharon discusses the evacuation of an illegal West Bank outpost of religious settlers, and how far-right politicians, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Public Security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, equated the situation with the ongoing debate over illegal Bedouin village Khan al-Ahmar in the West Bank. Gross talks about the shortage of ulpan teachers, instructors who teach Hebrew to new immigrants, caused by a lack of wage negotiations and complications with finding alternatives. Discussed articles include: Deri v. High Court: What did he actually pledge in his 2022 plea bargain? Eyeing their community's rightward shift, left-wing religious Jews form new movement Illegal West Bank outpost evacuated for second time as coalition tensions persist Likud MKs call on government to evacuate Bedouin village Khan al-Ahmar immediately After clash over West Bank outpost, Gallant and Smotrich meet with Netanyahu MKs demand solutions to Hebrew teacher shortage that is vexing new immigrants Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Listen to an interview with Egyptian activist, writer and photographer Hossam El Hamalawy @elhamalawy speaking on the current state of social movements in Egypt. In this exchange, recorded in Berlin, Hossam talks about the ways that state repression in Egypt has been deepened in recent years under the authoritarian government of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. A key to this conversation is the ways that the complicity of western governments with the state repression in Egypt is a reality, largely contextualized by Hossam as related to the sale of military hardware by major French and German corporations of the military industrial complex which are making profits from selling to the Egyptian state. Music on this interview is by Anthony Sahyoun @asahyoun. Photo taken by Hossam "El-Darb el-Ahmar الدرب الأحمر" The accompanying photo is taken by Hossam who wrote at the time "the front page of the liberal daily Ad-Dustour with news on the solidarity protest held in London against the trial of the Mahalla 49." This is important context to highlighting Hossam's long term involvement with social movements in Egypt, including the organizing of factory workers in Mahalla industrial district who held strikes leading up to the 2011 uprising which created pivotal momentum toward the uprising. This is the last episode of a series of four about the work of Handmade Palestine and the artisans that they support. In this episode I take you to an olive soap factory in the old city of Nablus where Amjad tells us about this family business and how they are developing new products that include goat and camel milk and very soon also dead sea mud.Morgan, from Handmade Palestine, visited the women in Nsf Jbeil that run the ceramics center and she interviewed two of the women there. You can also learn a bit more about the fate of the Bedouins living in the Westbank under strict military surveillance and how they struggle because Israel made it impossible to live their traditional Bedouin lifestyle. If you want to support Handmade Palestine with a donation or if you want to order Palestinian artisan handicrafts go to their website: https://www.handmadepalestine.comConnect to Stories from Palestine on social media (facebook, instagram and youtube) and sign up for the weekly e-mails by using this link: https://podspout.app/storiesfrompalestine

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Today's panel comprises Arab affairs correspondent Aaron Boxerman and breaking news editor Emanuel Fabian, as well as host Raoul Wootliff. On today's show, after we focused yesterday on the meaning of the Temple Mount and the possible changing of the status quo at the contentious site, we update on Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's confusing statements on Jewish freedom of prayer there and his backpedaling from the comments this morning. Yesterday saw over 1,000 Jewish visitors to the complex. We look at the reactions from the Arab world to the visits – both regionally and internally. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid made a formal request yesterday evening to further delay the impending demolition of Khan al-Ahmar. We assess the ongoing saga of the Bedouin village in the West Bank that Israel says was built illegally. And finally, turning our eyes to the north, we hear about Lebanon's ongoing financial crisis, Israel's offer for help, and how things are looking on Israel's northernmost border. Discussed articles include: Bennett backpedals after appearing to say Jews free to pray on Temple Mount On Tisha B'Av, Bennett speaks of ‘freedom of worship' for Jews on Temple Mount Amid tensions at Temple Mount, some 1,000 Jews visit holy site for Tisha B'Av Ra'am: Al-Aqsa Mosque ‘is solely the property of Muslims' Jordan, Egypt, Turkey all condemn Jewish visits to Temple Mount on Tisha B'Av Lapid requests delay in contentious demolition of West Bank Bedouin village Gantz offers Lebanon humanitarian aid amid financial meltdown Smuggled guns from Lebanon were meant for terror; largest bust in years — TV Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. On episode 13, Dr. Ahmar and Dr. Mike talk about a place that hits close to home - their home, the great city of Detroit! Joined by prominent Detroit-based doctors, Dr. Wanda Whitten-Shurney and Dr. Patrick Hines, the four dive into the city's history, traditions, economic boom and downfall, and the effects these events have had on the disease and its community. The investigation into "Motor City" is the first of Dr. Mike and Dr. Ahmar's "Legacy" episodes, a series that highlights cities around the United States that have large sickle cell populations. The episode tops off with a conversation with Vice President of Medical Affairs for GBT, Dr. Ken Bridges. A Detroit native, Dr. Bridges' passion for medicine led him to Harvard Medical School, where he founded a sickle cell clinic, and eventually to his highly prominent position at GBT. Sahar Francis of Addameer This week, I spoke with Sahar Francis, the Director of Addameer. Addameer is a non-governmental organization, or NGO, based in Ramallah in the West Bank in occupied Palestine that focuses on human rights advocacy, political prisoner support & public education efforts like Know Your Rights trainings. Addameer is one of the projects that is receiving a portion of the profits of the 2019 Certain Days: Political Prisoners Calendar that we've you've heard of in past episodes. For the purposes of broadcast, we had to cut some portions of this chat for the radio. If you're listening to the radio version, check out our podcast version for a few more minutes of chat. More instructions below. For the hour, Sahar tells us about aspects of the Palestinian struggle of the last 70 years against the domination of the Israeli state and a little about the refugee situation of the 10 million Palestinians in the region as they await their Right of Return to their homeland. Addameer (which translates to “Conscience” from Arabic) works to highlight the treatment of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories by the military court system of Israel, in particular the situation of youth as young as 12 years old who face harassment and torture, administrative detention of months and years on end with seemingly no end, and the impunity of the military system's use against Palestinians, and the unequal treatment of Palestinians and Israeli Jewish Settlers in the Occupied Territories. We also speak of the movement towards widening the death penalty under military law and the difficulty of Palestinian lawyers offering defense in the Israeli military courts who aren't usually fluent in Hebrew or proficient in Israeli law, as they study Palestinian law in college. Addameer, as a human rights organization, frames it's work in terms of International Human Rights law as enshrined in the United Nations (UNRWA, The Geneva Convention in hopes of eventual international intervention against the ongoing genocide at the hands of the Israeli government. We even cover the incarceration of Palestinians (in Israel or the Occupied Territories) for publishing critique of the Israeli occupation on social media (1,000's, including Tareen Tatour in 2015). In a segment comparing Settler-Colonialism in the U.S. & Israel/Palestine, Sahar speaks about two Bedouin villages under threat of demolition by Israel, Khan al-Ahmar in the occupied West Bank as well as Umm al-Hiran in order to clear way for Israeli colonial design. . ... . .. To never miss an episode, click the “podcasting” link, where you can find instructions on how to subscribe to our podcast using iTunes or whatever music app or program you like, including our soon-to-be resurrected Error451 podcast, an occasional tech security podcast from an anarchist perspective. Stay tuned next week for an overview of the 2018 Nationwide Prison Strike with an incarcerated organizer named Dee from Jailhouse Lawyers Speak. Announcements Phone Zap for Comrade Malik Washington This didn't make it into the recording for today, but this Tuesday, November 13th, BRABC with the backing of IWOC is inciting a phone zap in support of Keith “Comrade Malik” Washington to get Malik out of segregation. Malik has been continuously punished and persecuted, including instances of medical endangerment and solitary confinement with out reason given or recourse. He's also had his property, including legal documents, taken and his communication is greatly stifled at the moment (including legal). Read more by visiting the above links. Digital Security Self-Defense at Firestorm If you're in the Asheville area coming up, on Saturday, November 17th from 4-6pm at Firestorm Books and coffee, Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross will be giving a free, interactive presentation on online hygene and security self-defense threat modeling the far-right. SF Bay View Newspaper Updates In an update to our past episode featuring Mary Ratcliff of the SFBayView National Black Newspaper from August, we have good news! Amani Sawari, who we interviewed in July about the Nationwide Prison Strike as an outside spokesperson for Jailhouse Lawyers Speak prisoner organization, will be stepping up to take on the editorial position at that paper and giving Mary and Dr. Willie Ratcliff a long-deserved break. There's an online fundraiser to help get Amani situated in the Bay Area where you can support the transition and hopefully long next phase for the paper. You can find out more at https://www.patreon.com/sfbayview Anti-Anti-Semitism Action In light of the murder of eleven people at the Tree of Life synagogue, Anti-Anti-Semitism Action is asking for your support to take action against anti-Semitic organizers and to defend Jews. We are raising funds which we need to spotlight specific anti-Semitic organizers—especially those who use platforms that cater to the Alt Right such as Gab—to spread their toxic conspiracy theories. Funds will be used to expose and run public campaigns against activists who spread anti-Semitism, as well as those promoters who bring anti-Semitic speakers to their towns. Remaining monies will be used to provide security and protection for Jewish activists who are targeted by anti-Semites. This includes hiring security for public appearances, and arranging security measures at activists' residences. The ADL raises millions of dollars a year to “fight anti-Semitism” but they refuse to do the nuts and bolts work of taking action against anti-Semitic organizers or protecting Jews who are targeted. 100% of your donations will go directly to this.
Israel is very proud of its legal system that so cleverly denies building permits to Palestinians, but legitimizes illegal (under international law) Israeli settlements in the West Bank of Palestine. A case in point is the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar that is slated for demolition. Professor Frank Romano found out the consequences of non-violent protesting against the destruction of this village. Professor Romano explains beautifully in this 2 1/2 minute video. For background info on Khan al-Ahnar, take a look at these articles from the Israeli newspaper, Harretz: "Everything You Need to Know About the West Bank Bedouin Village at the Eye of a Diplomatic Storm," "In Unusual Move, Israeli Army Arrests French-American Law Professor in West Bank" and "Why Did Israel Handcuff and Deport a French-American Law Professor?"

He is the founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission. In the face of international condemnation and on-the-ground resistance, an Israeli high court froze the planned demolition of the West Bank Palestinian village of Khan al-Ahmar late last night. The BICOM team also analyse the story of Khan al-Ahmar and the proposed Israeli demolition of the Bedouin settlement.
Jess & Jamal discuss the forced eviction of the residents of the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar by Israeli authorities. Israel plans to erase the village to make room for an expansion of its colonial settlements in the Occupied West Bank.
