Today, I'm blessed to welcome back Dr. Ken Berry, who has joined us on the show before to share his invaluable insights. He is a family physician, speaker, and author based in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. Dr. Berry received a Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, in Animal Biology and Psychology, from Middle Tennessee State University, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 1996. He received his MD from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2000. In this episode, Dr. Ken Berry advocates for the carnivore diet as one of the best dietary approaches for longevity due to its very low carbohydrate content, ability to reduce inflammation, and effectiveness in triggering satiety hormones. He argues that meat from domesticated animals is among the least inflammatory foods available, unlike plants, which have evolved chemical defense mechanisms that can cause inflammation in humans. Dr. Ken Berry says the carnivore diet is a powerful tool for those with autoimmune diseases, explaining that such conditions arise from a confused and misdirected immune system, not an "overactive" one. He criticizes conventional medical approaches that focus on suppressing the immune system rather than addressing the root causes of inflammation, often found in dietary choices. Many doctors fail to check A1C and fasting insulin levels, which can lead to missed early diagnoses of type 2 diabetes, resulting in years of preventable damage to the body. The problem stems from the reliance on fasting blood glucose tests alone, which can appear normal even in patients with dangerously high A1C levels. Every dog owner has faced the hard realization that their dog won't live as long as they do, but we've all probably wondered: Why do some dogs live longer than others? It turns out that several factors are at play, according to the largest research study of dogs, known as The Dog Aging Project.Prof. Daniel Promislow of the University of Washington is co-director of the project, which examines how biology, lifestyle and environment can increase both the health and lifespan of more than 50,000 dogs. We spoke with Promislow about whether we can help our dogs live longer—and what their research could actually teach humans about aging.Link to the advertised Chicago Booth Review Podcast: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/review/podcast?source=cbr-sn-bbr-camp:podcast24-20240404

This Week, Chris delivers his market update from the Netherlands and Ireland and joining him is ‘Farmer Tom', Tom Martin: Founder of Farmer Time and Lancashire Dairy Farmer: John Towers. Tom developed his idea of linking a farmer with a teacher, anywhere within the UK, to deliver short fortnightly sessions to school children of all ages, relating the academic curriculum to different aspects of farming and food production. As an active Farmer Time participant, John describes his sessions as the highlight of his Week and is passionate about interacting with the children, telling the story of farming, and seeing how his messages are dissected and applied to different topics being covered in school, whether it be Food Technology, Textiles or Animal Biology etc. Farmer Time allows farming to have a positive voice in the education of children (future consumers!) and connecting them with agriculture. The programme is currently being delivered to 2% of school children and Tom wants to take this to 10% but needs 3000 farmers to help him reach this target. Would you be willing to be part of this fantastic scheme? Take a listen and see what you think. For more info, visit www.farmertime.uk

Chronic Inflammation First off, there are good and useful inflammations. Acute inflammation is where you get injured from a sprained ankle, for example, the swelling there is good; it's the first step in healing. Acute inflammation is not what we are talking about today. The enemy; is chronic, inappropriate inflammation. This inflammation is almost always caused by something in your environment getting into your body. It can be caused by something you eat, drink, or chemicals and toxins that you are exposed to in your environment. This leads to chronic inflammation in your body while it is trying to cope with the everyday insult of the toxins. [09:50] Metabolic Health: Inflammation, Obesity, And The Concerns Around Dairy Products Up until about year five, children drink milk regularly and are able to process it well. However, around the age of five, our biochemical machinery starts to shut off the ability to break down lactose. In fact, at least two-thirds of adults are lactose intolerant. This means for most adults, the bovine proteins and amino acids in dairy are inflammatory. As for cheese, some are better than others when it comes to inflammation. Berry explains that the further the cheese has been removed from liquid milk, the less inflammatory in most cases. For example, hard cheeses like parmesan have been fermented for a long time and will cause the least amount of inflammation. A dairy-free month is great to determine if your issues, such as chronic inflammation, gut issues, and trouble losing weight, come from your intake of dairy products. [18:30] Shocking! Another Inflammatory Food That May Surprise You A food that many people think is healthy, but is surprisingly inflammatory, is nuts. Even though nuts are looked at as a healthy snack, they are actually very carb-heavy and can slow down your weight loss. Cutting nuts out of your diet may seem restrictive, but not meeting your goals and being able to do whatever you want to in a day physically is really what is restrictive. A good way to eat nuts is occasionally, not every day. Eating them occasionally is probably fine because it mirrors our ancestors' behavior. [23:23] Why The Carnivore Diet Is Beneficial For Reducing Inflammation The carnivore diet, by definition, is the lowest carbohydrate diet you can eat. It is as close to zero carb as you can get. It also eliminates all the other foods that people could potentially be allergic to, such as the proteins in dairy or the phytochemicals in plants. Berry believes that meat and eggs are the least inflammatory foods on the planet, not including water. Meat is also the most nutrient-dense food on the planet, especially if you add organ meat to your diet. [31:28] Essential Lab Markers To Get When Assessing Your Inflammation For inflammation, good markers to get are CRP, whether it's high sensitivity or cardiac, sed rate and ESR are great. Another is homocysteine, as well as the ferritin level. Many people think ferritin is just a marker of iron deficiency, but it is way more than that. If a patient is over 35, these are all lab markers that should be checked to tell the doctor so much about their metabolic health. Without these labs, someone could be walking around with pre-diabetes, undiagnosed hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, etc. This is crucial information to determine their metabolic health. [36:48] Are Statins Always Necessary When Cholesterol is Elevated? If a patient has good levels otherwise, has never had a heart attack, and has a CAC score less than 1000, there is no research showing that they would benefit from taking a statin. If the patient has had a heart attack in the past or has a CAC above 1000, they may benefit from a low dose. Elevated cholesterol can become “background noise” or not a sense of concern if you have transformed your health overall. AND MUCH MORE! Dr. Ashley Zehnder is the co-founder and CEO of Fauna Bio, a San Francisco, Bay Area-based company founded in 2018. Fauna Bio has adopted a fascinating strategy for drug development, studying animal genomics to cure human diseases. They use unique and varied proprietary data sources to identify novel drug targets across a range of clinical applications, beginning with cardiovascular protection. Dr. Zehnder is a veterinarian-scientist at the intersection of animal biology and human health. Today she joins the show to discuss her background in Cancer Biology, her specialty training in exotic/non-traditional species, and the experience of launching Fauna Bio with co-founders, Dr. Linda Goodman and Dr. Katie Grabek in 2018. Dr. Zehnder explains how genomes from non-model systems and animals can inform our thinking about human disease, why her background in veterinary medicine gives her an advantage in studying comparative physiology, and what her team has learned about neurodegeneration from the hibernation process of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel. She talks about studying highly conserved disease traits across species and whether we can reactivate certain genetic pathways to reverse those diseases. You'll hear about Fauna Bio's work with RNA Seq. data, their focus on cardiovascular research and other indications they are now expanding into, as well as the company's relationship with Novo Nordisk as they explore the connection between hibernation, metabolic changes, and obesity. Dr. Zehnder offers her perspective on the University of Washington's Dog Aging Project, and talks about the current drug discovery pipeline at Fauna Bio. She addresses how Fauna Bio fits in with other aging research and concludes with her thoughts on how the field of comparative genomics will evolve over the next five to ten years. Episode Highlights: Dr. Ashley Zehnder is a veterinarian with a background in companion exotics (birds, mammals, reptiles) She completed a Ph.D. in Oncology and Cancer Biology at Stanford University Co-founded https://www.faunabio.com/ (Fauna Bio) with Dr. Linda Goodman and Dr. Katie Grabek in 2018 Her background in studying the molecular basis that drives cancer across all different species Studying human genetics alone became difficult and frustrating in trying to determine what drives human disease Turning to comparative genetics was a way to solve that problem Origins of Fauna Bio as a company - decided academia was not the way to take full advantage of new, richer data sets; wanted to make them usable for drug discovery and drug development as quickly as possible Traditional model systems organisms versus non-model systems and animals Model organisms do not fit the bill in trying to do therapeutics discovery for more complex disorders Instead of trying to mimic human diseases in model organisms, Dr. Zehnder focuses on finding similar situations that already exist and have been solved in nature, and learning from those solutions directly Her medical training as a veterinarian gives her an incomparable advantage in studying comparative physiology Scientists who focus only on humans have a blind spot to the fact that the same disease syndromes can be seen across the animal world Research on the thirteen-lined ground squirrel and neurodegeneration Certain adaptations that help animals end up causing diseases in humans; animals have a way of reversing these while humans do not 200 Mammals Project looks at which animals, including humans, can go into torpor Largely study mammalian species due to the similarities with humans They work with RNA-Seq data Studies on traumatic cardiovascular events (heart attacks) for hibernating species show that they may be resistant to damage caused by reperfusion injury Fauna Bio initially focused on cardiovascular health, and is now expanding into other organs of the body, such as the brain hypothalamus, liver, kidney, muscle and skeletal tissue Their...

When a victime has to leave a domestic violence situation, that departure is often hindered because of abusers' threats to animals, or because the victim doesn't want to leave pets behind. It's a real problem. But one organization, Redrover, is working with that problem and creating safe solutions all across the US and Canada. Nicole Forsyth is President and CEO of RedRover, a nonprofit that helps bring animals from crisis to care, including in domestic violence cases. The three main programs of RedRover help people and animals in crisis, whether that is a natural disaster or a DV problem. This includes working with shelters to learn how to accommodate animals and the humans who need help. The organization also has a program for children designed to reinforce the human-animal bond and emotions. The group also helps with resources for animal medical care. Forsythe authored an interactive digital book and game as part of the RedRover Readers program. We may not always connect the dots, but our social environment has a massive impact on our health and wellbeing. Social Determinants of Health involve a list of things that are proven to directly influence health outcomes. They include sex, gender identity, race, the level of education of your parents and of yourself, where you live, how much money you make, and a host of other factors. We reached out to Kristy Kerr, Executive Director of the BC CDC Foundation for Public Health to ask her about the Social Determinants of Health, and their impact on our health. She talked to us about some of the great initiatives this one-of-a-kind foundation is involved in, in efforts to address these social realities. About Kristy Kerr Kristy Kerr is the Executive Director of the BCCDC Foundation, a registered charity, working in partnership with the BC Centre for Disease Control, as well as other stakeholders, in order to improve public health outcomes in BC. She’s responsible for leading strategic direction, organizational development, and the consistent achievement of the mission, vision, and mandate of the BCCDC Foundation. Kristy believes that our best way forward to create a truly healthy society is to increase public health awareness and investment, and she is leading the Foundation with these goals in mind. Passionate about health promotion, prevention, health equity, and the social determinants of health, Kristy believes we need to shift our focus to upstream actions, that is, addressing root causes of issues and emphasizing positive and holistic health. Upstream thinking will shift our current primary focus on the acute care system toward an investment in stopping problems before they need to be fixed, resulting in a reduction in the burden on our healthcare system, and thereby improving it in the process. Prior to joining the BCCDC Foundation, Kristy worked in different research management and grant- writing roles within the academic world. She also worked in international development and global health, spending time in Zambia and Kenya working with local stakeholders on various community-based initiatives. Kristy has a Master’s degree in Public Health with a specialization in Health Promotion, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Biology, and an Associate’s degree in Creative Writing. A BCCDC Foundation Call to ActionThe BCCDC Foundation needs advocates to spread the message that we all have a role to play in population health: individual actions can have a population impact. By working together to shift how we see health and how we engage with our healthcare system, we can protect the health of our communities now and for future generations. Tolga grew up in south London and admits that he got involved with gang culture and left school with poor grades He then trained to be an electrical engineer and spent years working in a 9-5 job in London. I travelled to Highnam Woods, near where Tolga's now living in Gloucestershire, to find out how he completely changed his life and career. The Outdoors Fix is a podcast produced and hosted by Liv Bolton @liv_outsideuk It is proudly supported by Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports – stores nationwide and online offering everything you need to equip you for the best outdoors experience. The post Tolga Aktas: How I moved from electrical engineering to working in conservation appeared first on The Outdoors Fix.
We like to believe in a clear line that separates humankind from other creatures. Whether it’s our intellect, our capacity for empathy or even our eternal soul, we see ourselves as unique among species. But are animals smarter than we think? And is that separating line much blurrier than we can imagine? Today, we’re sharing stories about animal intelligence.
GET YOUR WATER WOMEN STICKERS AT WATERWOMENPODCAST.CA/SHOP!!! Hanna found her passion for the marine environment back in 2012 when she was working as a deckhand on board the tall ship Soren Larsen for its 7-month voyage of the South Pacific Ocean. Sailing from Sydney (Australia) she went to New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, before we returned to Sydney. Nature dictated the days on board, and her daily encounters with marine animals, including dolphins, flying fish, albatrosses, and pilot whales helped her learn the powers of the ocean. We sailed through storms that tore our sails, through sea-states with 4-meter high waves, and we climbed the mast in pouring rain. Hanna's time in Australia and the South Pacific led her to start a degree in Animal Biology at Stirling University in Scotland. Since this Hanna has started a degree in qualitative analysis and statistics. Hanna currently runs the account Sustainable Biologist on Instagram where she shares knowledge of conservation and the marine environment in hopes to raise awareness of issues related to both marine and terrestrial animals. Palm Beach is full of interesting over achievers meet Anne, as she talks about her book Learning to Fall. She will be hosting an upcoming book signing for our listeners at a local venue. Anne is fairly new to Palm Beach County and fell in love with Wellington and made it her home. She is a partner in a bank, equestrian, and an author. Her book can be found on Amazon or ask for it from your local book seller and they will order it for you. Anne is both an unlikely author and an obvious one. Running a 75-horse equestrian center with her husband, while raising two young daughters, didn’t leave much time for reading novels, let alone writing them. But there was something about living in the mountains of the San Francisco Bay Area and the magic of horses that has inspired her – not just then, but ever since her first trail ride at the age of sixteen – to write down her unique perspective on the world. Born in Kraków and raised outside of Toronto, Anne holds a Bachelor of Science degree with specialized honors in Animal Biology from the University of Guelph in Canada, and an MBA from Saint Mary’s College of California.Prior to running an equestrian center, Anne’s experience ranges from animal behavior to animal nutrition to cancer research. She and her family relocated to Wellington, Florida, to be closer to the world of horse show jumping. She’s currently working on a new novel in the evenings, and during the day she works at Waterman Bank as a mortgage banker, helping people finance their dream homes, vacation and equestrian properties. Waterman Bank is a federally chartered bank, and she is able to finance properties anywhere in the United States.Mortgage Banker | NMLS ID 1943461Waterman Bank650-867-5173aclermont@watermanbank.com Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=33101553" data-patreon-widget-type="become-patron-button">Become a Patron!)

For the longest time I thought we were the problem, then I realized that if done the right way - we can actually be the solution."Renee Peters is an Earth activist who––after a decade working as a fashion model in NYC and all over the world––realized a deep yearning to return to Nature. With an undergrad degree in Animal Biology, last summer she decided to follow her calling to explore the potentials of permaculture and regenerative agriculture for ecosystem restoration. She took a Permaculture Design course in Vermont with Whole Systems Design and subsequently completed a two-month apprenticeship on a Homestead near Albany; a four-month WWOOF exchange on a permaculture production farm in Maui, HI; and is currently deepening her practices with permaculture as a Forest Garden Apprentice in Highland, NY.No longer modeling, Renee seeks to show her following on social media that transitioning to a completely different field of work is possible, no matter what your age is. She also hopes to show that reconnecting and working with the land is a change that not only benefits the planet, but also benefits the soul and personal health and happiness.Follow Renee:Website: http://www.model4greenliving.com/Instagram: @Renee.ElizabethPetersTwitter: @model4greenLVNGMentioned in the show:Terra Preta: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta (Humans positive impact on the Amazonian rainforest)NY Times article: Make a compost bin at homeStay in touch:ANNE THERESE Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annetheresegennari/HEY CHANGE Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heychangeworld/Website: https://www.heychange.world/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

There's no question that human activity is causing enormous changes on our planet's environment, from deforestation to mass extinction to climate change. But perhaps there is a tiny cause for optimism -- or at least, the prospect of a new equilibrium, if we can manage to ameliorate our most destructive impulses. Wildlife conservationist Joe Walston argues that -- seemingly paradoxically, but not really -- increasing urbanization provides hope for biodiversity preservation and poverty alleviation moving forward. As one piece of evidence, while our population is still growing, the rate of growth has slowed substantially as people move into cities and new opportunities become available. We discuss these trends, the causes underlying them, and what strategies suggest themselves to bring humans into balance with the environment before it's too late. Joe Walston is Senior Vice President for Field Conservation the Wildlife Conservation Society. He received his Masters degree in Zoology and Animal Biology from Aberdeen University. Before moving to New York, he spent fifteen years working in on conservation programs in Africa and SouthEast Asia. His work in Cambodia was awarded with that country's highest civilian honor. A species of tube-nosed bat has been named Murina Walston in recognition of his work on protecting bat habitats. In this podcast, researchers from the UWA BioZone explain how they are working to solve complex problems through convergent research. This transformative approach has the potential to help accelerate innovation and tackle societal challenges. For example, the convergence between engineering and biotechnology has resulted in innovations in 3-D printing and medicine, where customised medical implants can be built on demand. This approach moves beyond the practices of interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and even transdisciplinary research; integrating tools and knowledge from the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, humanities and other fields. Moreover, it involves a commitment to translate research through enterprise and community engagement.
