Bo is best known for his book Small Giants: Companies That Choose to Be Great Instead of Big which was published in 2005 and was a finalist for the Financial Times Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award.He went on to build a career in journalism where he joined Inc. Magazine. He was there as the publication started covering companies that were new and curious at the time. Companies like Apple and Microsoft led by these strange, brilliant founders Steve Jobs and Bill Gates and Bo cut his teeth interviewing them and writing about them for the magazine. His writing has spawned communities and his life has spanned 50 years of marriage which has spawned two children and four grandchildren. This was a fascinating conversation with someone who had a first-row seat to the birth of the new economy in the United States. Please enjoy!

Small Giants perfectly addressed the kind of business I was focusing on growing and helped me to set my own principles about how I would run Organize 365. I share some of those in the video. As we walk through life, many of us never know the near misses with tragedy we avoid due to an unknown twist of fate. For others, however, that near-miss was broadcast worldwide and will be forever remembered.    Bo Burlingham, author of the best-selling books Small Giants, The Great Game of Business and Finish Big, co-founder of the Small Giants Community and recent donothing guest, was one of those people. This week, we’re deviating from our typical podcast format to share his unbelievable story.   ...   On September 11th, 2001, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives—and Bo was nearly among them.   That Tuesday over 17 years ago, Bo had plans to travel from Boston to Los Angeles with a seat booked on American Airlines Flight 11. However, a twist of fate moved him to change his flight. [13:04] Bo observes that great entrepreneurs live a life of value. Entrepreneurs are idealists and dreamers, and are driven to change the world for the better. The great entrepreneurs are primarily motivated by vision, not by gain. [20:09] A business gets to a certain size and complexity, and the numbers become very important. Entrepreneurs are generally not accountants, and they need to learn that aspect of business to see how the enterprise is creating value. This was the basis of The Great Game of Business, with Jack Stack. [24:40] There is a trend among young professionals to reject capitalism, while taking its benefits for granted. There is ignorance about how business works, while the media focuses on the problematic aspects of business. Business is a tool to use to meet your goals. [28:49] There has always been tension between the numbers side and the people side of business. Jack Stack said that’s only a problem when the numbers are not in the hands of the people themselves. From zero to $120+ Million in 6 years to bankruptcy, then to the cover of Inc. Magazine and the eventual sale for hundreds of millions of dollars, Norm Brodksy deserves every ounce of praise and money he received when he sold! The battle wounds of his first tragic business venture turned him into one of the wisest entrepreneurs I have ever encountered. The stories Norm shares with us are incredible! It was fascinating hearing him recount how he used his articles in Inc. Magazine to showcase his selling process with his potential buyers and then rejecting the offer at the last minute despite having appeared on the front page with the headline “Norm Says Yes”. Norm also shared with us some great real-life examples of how he made his companies so successful. Always to the point, it's impossible not to be inspired by what Norm has to say. What are the lessons we can learn from Norm's first business? Norm was crystal clear that even though there was a change in the marketplace and a variety of external factors, it was up to him to take responsibility and not to slip into the “Groundhog Day Syndrome” as he called it. This looks like a contradiction but as you will see in the case of Norm's second business, the culture you create with the “keep it forever” mentality is what actually makes the business more sellable. What was the main thing he did differently with his second business? The first (and most important) thing Norm did was take a look at who he is, what he wanted from his business, and why. At this point in his life as an entrepreneur, he decided the culture, vendors, and clients he worked with were the most valuable parts of a healthy and sustainable business.
