Phillip Cooke, a pilot for Air Transport International (ATI), shares his journey from flight simulation enthusiast to professional aviator. Growing up with a passion for aviation, inspired by his father, he started with a PVC pipe yoke before diving into flight simulators. He earned his private pilot license and attended ATP Flight School in Long Beach, CA. His career path took him through flying the PC-12 for a small charter company, then the Cessna Caravan 208, before moving on to SkyWest. Before completing training at SkyWest, an opportunity at ATI arose, leading him to fly the Boeing 757/767 for Prime Air cargo operations. Beyond real-world flying, Phillip is deeply involved in VR-based flight simulation, investing in a high-end setup to stay sharp. He discusses how flight sim technology is an invaluable tool for pilots, offering realistic training at a fraction of the cost of real-world flying. He also participates in online multiplayer ATC environments, simulating real-world airline operations, including long-haul FedEx routes with real NOTAMs and weather conditions. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How flight simulation can develop and maintain real-world flying skills The benefits of VR flight sim for pilot training and situational awareness Phillip's aviation career path from small charters to flying 757/767s for ATI Insights into the world of cargo flying and working with Prime Air How gamification and career modes in flight sim can enhance training and engagement #Aviation #AviationCareers #pilotcareer #pilottips #pilotcareertips #aviationcrew #AviationJobs #AviationLeadership #flying #PilotSuccess #pilotpodcast #PilotPreparation #Pilotrecruitment #AviationEducation #AviationOpportunities #AviationPodcast #flyingtips #AirlineInterviewPrep #PilotDevelopment #PilotFinance #PilotExperience #PilotTraining

This week in airplane news, an Embraer 175 lost a winglet in turbulence, the FAA revises eVTOL certification process, NTSB recommends SMS for AirTaxi, and a passenger lands a plane! An Embraer E175 lost its right winglet in Turbulence on Tuesday The American Airlines flight from Charleston (CHS) to Dallas (DFW) was forced to divert to Birmingham (BHM) No word on what intensity of turbulence was encountered or other meteorological conditions https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/e175-loses-winglet-in-turbulence/ The FAA is revising its eVTOL certification criteria Rather than be evaluated as small-aircraft under part 23, evtols will be evaluated as “Powered Lift” aircraft This is the same category as tilt-rotor aircraft, such as the Leonardo AW609. The FAA states this will NOT affect certification timelines… but… https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/after-dot-audit-faa-reverses-on-evtol-certification-criteria The NTSB has placed substantial blame on the FAA for a fatal 2019 helicopter crash in Hawaii In a statement released on Tuesday, the NTSB says ““The NTSB previously made 11 recommendations to the FAA to prevent accidents like this one, but our recommendations only work when they are implemented. It's time for the FAA to act.” ““When the NTSB issues safety recommendations, they are data-driven, supported by factual evidence developed from investigations, and are carefully crafted to prevent accidents.” The accident occurred after the chief pilot and check airman flew the helicopter with 6 passengers onboard into a mountainous region surrounded by log fog. The NTSB expressed frustration with the FAA for not mandating Safety Management Systems (SMS) in air taxi and air tour operations. “The NTSB initially recommended the FAA require air taxi and air tour operators to have safety management systems in 2016. Since the FAA refused to take such action, the board reiterated the recommendation for the sixth time.” https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/ntsb-lays-into-faa-for-inaction-on-safety-management-system-mandate A passenger on a Cessna Caravan with no flying experience successfully landed at Palm Beach after the pilot suffered a medical emergency. I was flying into Auckland on Thursday after a spending the first half of this week on Aotea Great Barrier Island. It was a wonderful trip - I’ll tell you more about that soon - and the flight back to the mainland came courtesy of a little Cessna Caravan and Great Barrier Air. If you haven’t been before, flying Great Barrier Air is wonderful. Like other regional airlines, it's pretty much just as chilled out as you might imagine. All the passengers squeeze inside a cabin space about as high and wide as in a car. If you’re in Row A you can pretty much reach out and touch the controls. There’s no fancy safety video. There’s no inflight snack. There’s not even a co-pilot! It’s fantastic. And the views across the Hauraki Gulf are astonishing. But it was coming back into Auckland, flying at a low speed and at a lower altitude than you would in a big commercial jet, that I found myself really focusing a couple of features of our biggest city. For starters, and this is probably pretty obvious, Auckland is incredibly spread out. Just ridiculously spread out. From the far-Eastern suburbs to the outer reaches of the North Shore is a vast suburban patchwork. If it were an unfamiliar city you might think it was home to five million people.Except the other thing you notice, and this might also seem prettttty obvious, is that the houses are all one-or-two-storied. And almost all have backyards.Don’t get me wrong; I love a backyard. I love gardening. I love playing backyard cricket. I think it’s really important for kids to play outside and feel dirt underneath their fingernails. But at a time when we are lamenting the ludicrous cost of housing in this country, and Auckland is top of the pops, I couldn’t separate our crisis from that very simple and obvious observation: Auckland’s houses are too spread out for the city’s population. I understand that as Kiwis, most of us have grown up with a version of the quarter-acre dream. That dream might have been sustainable when Auckland only had half a million people. Indeed, our other big cities are only just starting to experience the pressures of endless sprawl. But it seems to me that one of the most important solutions to the housing crisis is our responsibility. Not the government's responsibility. Not the Reserve Bank's. We are responsible for a collective attitude change when it comes to intensification. That doesn’t mean fifty-storey tower blocks in every neighbourhood. But it does mean smart density. It means many more town houses and terraced housing options in our cities. It means making Auckland’s neighbourhoods look a little more London and a little less Gisborne in the 1950s.Of course, when developers try and bring about these changes, they’re often challenged by existing property owners who moan that more intensive housing will affect the ‘character’ of their neighbourhoods. These are the same people who complain about 5% rates rises even as their house values increase by $150,000 a year. They are acting against the collective interests of everyone else in their wider community. Density is the pay-off for choosing to live in a big city. With the right sort of development and public transport infrastructure, there are all sorts of benefits that come with living in higher density environments. And if you don't like it, simple! Move to a town or a region where space is at less of a premium. I agree with the government on one thing… the housing crisis is going to take a require a massive set of solutions. Many of those policies lie at the feet our elected officials. But there are things the rest of us can do to help ease the crisis. For starters, stand up to the NIMBYs.

East Hampton, New York is prosing a ban that would prevent seaplanes from using water within their city limits. The Seaplane Pilots Association is committed to working with seaplane operators, city officials, and local residents to create a solution that insures fair and equal access to seaplane operators while satisfying the concerns expressed by the city and local residents. Once upon a time, seaplanes had a key role in the commercial aviation industry. Those were the early heroic years of airline pioneers such as PanAm’s Juan Trippe, who established some of the first regular, reliable trans-oceanic connections with a fleet of seaplane Clippers.Fast forward to the 21st Century and here comes Rob Ceravolo, the former US Navy top gun fighter pilot that is making seaplanes cool again.Rob left the Navy and invested every single cent he had in order to set up a seaplane airline in South Florida. This eventually grew into Tropic Ocean Airways, which currently links several destinations in the Caribbean and New York state with a fleet of 13 amphibious aircraft. If you think about it, seaplanes have multiple advantages in certain niche markets…and they have some disadvantages as well, for example, they require heavy maintenance and an inordinate amount of skill. Both issues that Tropic Ocean Airways has found ways to address…In this episode we talk with Rob about his aviation and entrepreneurial journey and about seaplanes, about their pros and cons, their operational requirements and why, after several decades of neglect, it’s time for these amazing airplanes to play a larger role in the commercial aviation industry.Ready to take a dip into the water? After scoring his start as a seaplane pilot he was long waiting for, Benny enjoyed flying Beaver floatplanes in one of Australia's most iconic locations. He upgraded to the Cessna Caravan, the pride of the fleet and continued to build experience until an unfortunate accident involving controlled flight into terrain put a stop to his unique lifestyle. Enduring months of self doubt and emotional hardship, Benny overcame those issues to pursue further employment within the seaplane industry including a stint with an overseas operator, and now enjoys a successful career as an IFR Caravan Pilot. His story is inspirational, powerful and positive.Complete a survey about On the Step to help it grow!https://forms.gle/rQ3bwFfJuVZqWN1P8Follow me on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/thatmallardguy/

It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA STOCK FALLS AFTER REPORT THAT GIGAFACTORY EXPANSION IS ON HOLD "Tesla Inc. shares on Thursday traded at their lowest in five sessions after a report said the Silicon Valley car maker and Panasonic Corp. have put on hold plans to expand the Nevada Gigafactory." reports Market Watch: "Demand for battery cells continues to outstrip supply, Tesla said. The two companies made their decisions due to concerns about weakening demand for Tesla vehicles, the Nikkei reported. A Tesla spokesperson told Nikkei Tesla “of course” would continue to make new investments in the Nevada factory as needed. Contrary to what the report implied, “demand for cells continues to outpace supply” and it remains “the fundamental constraint” on the production of Tesla vehicles and stationary energy-storage devices such the Tesla Powerwall and the Powerpack, the spokesperson said." https://www.marketwatch.com/story/tesla-stock-falls-after-report-that-gigafactory-expansion-is-on-hold-2019-04-11 TESLA (TSLA) TO HOLD Q1 2019 FINANCIAL RESULTS AND EARNINGS CALL ON APRIL 24 Simon at TEslarati has the scoop on the next results from Tesla: "Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has announced that it would be posting its financial results for Q1 2019 after the market closes on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. The company would be issuing a brief advisory with a link to its Q1 2019 Update Letter, which will be accessible from Tesla’s Investor Relations website. A live Q&A session is set for 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time (5:30 p.m. Eastern Time) to discuss the electric car and energy company’s financial results and outlook." Teslarati notes that the call is earlier in the year than previous Q1 results calls: "While it remains to be seen if Tesla is conducting its early first-quarter earnings call due to positive news on profitability, all eyes will be on the company as it is expected to release some updates on a number of its ongoing and upcoming projects, including Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, the $35,000 Standard Model 3, the Full Self-Driving suite, the Solar Roof, and updates on future products like the Tesla Pickup Truck and the Tesla Semi. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-earnings-call-date/ GEELY LAUNCHES GEOMETRY EV SPINOFF BRAND "Geely, the Chinese automaker currently behind familiar OEMs like Volvo and Lotus, is about to embark on yet another adventure -- but this time, it's a creation all its own." according to CNET: "Geely on Thursday introduced Geometry, a spinoff automaker dedicated solely to electric vehicles. Geometry aims to have 10 electric vehicles on the market by 2025, covering a wide variety of segments, from sedans to MPVs. At the same time, Geometry rolled out its first car, the not-very-creatively-named Geometry A. Two different batteries are on offer: The 51.9-kWh battery allows for a maximum range of 255 miles, whereas the 61.9-kWh battery extends that range to 311 miles. It's not very expensive, either. The standard-range version starts at 210,000 Chinese yuan (about $31,000) and stretches to 230,000 Chinese yuan (about $34,000). The long-range version starts where the standard-range ends, eventually topping out at a decent 250,000 Chinese yuan (about $37,000). When subsidies are applied, the prices go even lower. The Ballard modules will be designed and manufactured at the company’s new Marine Center of Excellence at its facility in Hobro, Denmark. The Norled vessel—which has carrying capacity for up to 299 passengers and 80 cars—is expected to be the first liquid hydrogen fuel cell-powered ferry in commercial operation globally. NORWAY AVIATION FIRM ORDERS 60 ALL-ELECTRIC AIRPLANES, DROPS OPERATION COSTS 80% "Norway’s OSM Aviation, a firm that specializes in recruitment and training for the aviation industry, has ordered 60 all-electric planes from Colorado-based electric aircraft manufacturer Bye Aerospace." write Phil for Elecrek today: "OSM Aviation announced the order on its website. The order, which CEO Espen Høiby claims is the largest order for commercial electric planes to date, will be for Bye Aerospace’s eFlyer 2. Høiby said. The eFlyer 2, formerly known as the Sun Flyer, uses a Siemens propulsion system: a 57 lb. SP70D motor with a 90kW peak rating (120 HP), and a continuous power setting of up to 70kW (94 HP). The eFlyer 2 successfully completed its first official flight test on February 8. Each two-seater aircraft will cost $350,000 per plane, but while it costs $110/hr. to operate a conventional training plane, the all-electric planes will only cost $20 per hour, Høiby said." https://electrek.co/2019/04/11/norway-60-electric-airplanes/ HARBOUR AIR IS SWITCHING OVER TO 100% ELECTRIC SEAPLANES "It’s always great hearing stories such as a new one from seaplane operator Harbour Air, which is based in Vancouver, Canada, and is switching its entire fleet to electricity!" says CleanTechnica today: "When the world’s largest floatplane-only airline, Harbour Air, says it is switching to become an electrically powered airline, you know something is going on with the state of aviation battery technology. Harbour Air will be the first seafaring airline to convert its complete fleet of de Havilland Beaver, Otter, Twin Otter aircraft and lone Cessna Caravan to electricity. These 41 vintage aircraft will be converted to reach a longer lifecycle with highly improved efficiency and lowered maintenance costs, a win-win for all." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/04/06/how-maritime-harbour-air-is-switching-over-to-100-electric-seaplanes/ MERCEDES-BENZ TO SUPPLY 56 ELECTRIC URBAN BUSES TO WIESBADEN; The public transport company ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH from Wiesbaden in Germany’s Hesse region has ordered 56 Mercedes‑Benz eCitaro electric urban buses. With this commission, the city of Wiesbaden is switching a fifth of its bus fleet to electromobility within a short period of time. Mercedes‑Benz also takes care of the adaptation of the service yard, the equipment and setting up of charging infrastructure, as well as the charging management process itself. Planned tasks even include building the transformer station for converting medium-voltage to low-voltage electricity as well as the installation of cables on the site. The remaining 41 eCitaro will be equipped with solid-state batteries. Solid-state batteries have a very high energy density—in this case, seven battery packs are sufficient to provide a total capacity of 441 kWh. With the solid-state batteries, the eCitaro can meet about 70% of all requirements without opportunity charging. The characteristics of solid-state batteries differ significantly from NMC batteries—different shape, larger and not suitable for quick-charging. As a result, city buses equipped with them cover different operational profiles. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz will offer the eCitaro with a choice of NMC or solid-state batteries. BERNIE ECCLESTONE CLAIMS THE FUTURE OF RACING IS ELECTRIC Jalopnik says: "Despite the fact that Bernie Ecclestone is no longer at the helm of Formula One, the man still makes headlines with his often-sensational takes about racing. This time, he’s back with one hell of a claim: F1 is the motorsport series of past. Formula E is the future. Yes. Bernie Ecclestone, the man who was “horrified” by F1's quiet engines, has sided with the near-silent power units of the Formula E cars. FE, he argues in a Reuters interview, is going to be the way forward in the future: It’s a different form of entertainment but Formula E will begin to get much, much bigger and better, which is slowly what they are doing anyway. And Formula One will suffer because of that. There’s more chance there of big, big expansion [in Formula E] and more chances commercially than there is of changing things in Formula One." https://jalopnik.com/bernie-ecclestone-claims-the-future-of-racing-is-electr-1833969146 AUDI E-TRON SALES IN MARCH KICKED OFF AT FOUR DIGIT VOLUME InsideEVs' has the scoop on Audi etron numbers: "March was under the siege of the Tesla Model 3, but it wasn’t the only important BEV model introduced in Europe, as Audi finally started customer deliveries of the e-tron. According to Audi’s press release, we assume that sales exceeded 1,000 as the new registrations in the two biggest markets were: Norway – 621 Germany – 490" COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Joe and Paul Silvia are third generation dropzone kids who grew up to be drop zone owners! The Skydiving Company in Madisonville Tx, opened its doors in 2018 with a Cessna Caravan, a new hangar and highly experienced staff. These boys have been packing parachutes and skydiving for their fathers’ drop zone in Chattanooga Tn, since before they could drive. Joe Silvia has traveled the country working at multiple drop zones. Paul is an expert nylon compressionist. My name is Waz Choudhry. I have been blessed with over 4,000 skydives and more than 13 years of experience in the sport of skydiving. WazzyCircus Radio is a show where I sit down with some of the most amazing people that I have met over a decade of professional skydiving.
Remote Area Medical (RAM) is working to deploy it’s fleet of aircraft to Puerto Rico, which will be the forward base from which their Cessna Caravan will fly supplies to the islands hardest hit by Hurricane Irma. RAM was founded over 30 years ago, and has helped provide medical services to over 100,000 people. They are looking for volunteer pilots and healthcare professionals to provide services in underserved areas in the U.S. and the Caribbean. They currently need pilots who can fly their Caravans and their King Air 200. You can find the Remote Area Medical webpage here and their Facebook page here. In this episode, we interview RAM founder Stan Brock about the organization, and learned how doctors, dentists, optometrists, and pilots can help the organization by volunteering their time, or donating money.
