Daily Boost Show Notes - Episode 5049 When Overthinking Becomes Your Biggest Obstacle Host: Scott Smith Episode Description In this energetic episode, Scott Smith shares a powerful lesson he learned during his days as a radio host that has become one of his most quoted pieces of advice. With his trademark blend of humor and straight talk, Scott tackles the common tendency to get stuck in preparation mode – what he calls "fixing to get ready." Drawing from a memorable call he received while hosting a Saturday night radio show, Scott reveals how many of us waste valuable time overthinking, researching, and planning when we should be taking action. He challenges listeners to recognize their stalling and offers practical wisdom on breaking free from this pattern. Whether you're building a business, pursuing a passion, or simply trying to progress toward a goal, this episode provides the motivation to stop preparing and start moving forward – even when the path ahead isn't perfectly clear. Featured Story During his days hosting a popular radio show called "70s Saturday Night," Scott received a call from a woman who said she was "fixing to get ready" to go out. When asked what that meant, she explained she was thinking about what to wear, whether it needed ironing, if her date would like it – essentially wasting time because she had time to waste. This chance conversation became a powerful metaphor for Scott, as it showed how people spend too much time thinking, pondering, and worrying instead of taking action toward their goals. Key Takeaways "Fixing to get ready" is the state of perpetual preparation that prevents real progress Clarity is what separates those who achieve their goals from those who don't Not knowing what to do next is the #1 thing that stops people from getting what they want Having a clear roadmap or framework eliminates the tendency to stall in preparation mode There's a time and place for "fixing to get ready" moments, but living there permanently leads to stagnation If you don't know your purpose, your purpose is to find your purpose You can't get to where you want to go from where you are with the same mindset The moment you start moving forward, you begin transforming into a different person Don't buy into the myth that success comes easily or without hard work Everything you want is somewhere down the road, not where you are today Memorable Quotes "Don't buy into the myth that life is easy. If you want anything, you must lay the groundwork and work hard." "If you don't know your purpose, your purpose is to find your purpose." "The sooner you start moving, the sooner you get what you want." Scott's Three-Step Approach Recognize When You're Stalling: Be honest with yourself when you're in "fixing to get ready" mode instead of taking action Figure Out the Next Step: Even if you're not completely clear on the entire path, identify just the following action you need to take Move Forward Anyway: Take action even without perfect clarity, knowing that movement creates momentum and clarity will develop along the way Connect With Scott Search for The Daily Boost on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Have you ever regretted not saying something sooner? Do you think holding in your emotions causes stress? Today, Jay takes us on a journey through the principles of the Tell Them Method, explaining that whether it's a simple decision like not wanting to attend an event or a deeper emotion like feeling unappreciated, the key is to directly communicate those feelings to the person involved. He highlights that most of us practice what he calls the "Tell Everyone But Them" method—where we vent to others but avoid speaking directly to the person who needs to hear it. This behavior, Jay argues, not only erodes trust and intimacy in relationships but also traps negative emotions within us, leading to stress and even physical discomfort. Jay uses relatable anecdotes and insights from research to underline the significance of expressing emotions in a healthy way. He discusses how bottled-up emotions can lead to passive-aggressive behavior, overreactions, and even health problems. By directly telling people how we feel—whether it's disappointment, love, or frustration—Jay believes we open the door to deeper understanding and connection. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Use the Tell Them Method How to Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations How to Pick the Best Time to Talk How to Share Feelings Without Fighting How to Ask Instead of Accuse Practicing the "Tell Them Method" approach in everyday life not only improves our relationships but also enhances our emotional well-being, giving us the clarity and peace that comes from being truthful and intentional in our interactions. We have had to replace several staff members over the last few months and obviously there's a learning curve with new hires and they are going to make many mistakes. The thing you need to find out, however, is whether these mistakes are because they are overworked or if they just don't care. Listen to the end to find out my take on what these "just don't care" situations tend to actually be. The HD Your Biz® Show - Human Design for Business with Jamie Palmer
In this episode, I explained the differences between defined centers, undefined centers, and open centers. Centers are one aspect of the human design chart. There are three different configurations of centers in the human design chart defined, undefined, and open centers. Defined centers provide a consistent source of strength and energy, while undefined and open centers receive and amplify energy from others. Gates within undefined centers in human design can be used as anchor points to discern one's own energy and avoid external influences and conditioning. Open centers in human design allow for fluidity of energy and a wide range of experiences. Overall, understanding and utilizing one's unique human design blueprint through the centers can lead to more success, joy, and abundance in both live and business. Let's dive into human design centers - defined, undefined, and open explained. ******Transcription Below******* Hello, hello, hello and welcome. Today I am very excited to chat with you about defined centers, undefined centers, and open centers. So when we think about a human design chart, the centers are really sort of this focal point for where a lot of the nuance comes from in a chart. It's really a big element in a chart, right? Because in each center we have gates and channels, and then each gate and channel is also so associated with a line level. So our centers and the definition of our centers gives life to our unique energetic blueprint. So today I really want to talk to you about the differences between define undefined and open centers. And I really want to talk about a little bit of the nuance that's there in those centers. So we're going to start with defined centers first. So define centers are really this idea that these are your strengths. They're fix, they're static. And really I like to say you kind of become more of who you are in that energy over time. When we have a defined center, we get definition because we have one gate coming off of one center. So for example, the head center, and then we have another gate coming off the Ajna Center, and they're both part of the same thing. So say you had Gate 61 in the head and Gate 24 and the Ajna, that forms a channel, which gives you to define centers. So when we think about that, when you have a channel, this is a consistent way for you to access this strength. Anytime we have defined centers, think of that as a strength. That is something that you can tap into on demand. You will, as you age, only become more of who you are in that center. And I have found that to be pretty true, particularly when you become aligned to that energy over time. So defined centers and the channels that are within them discern our strengths that we can consistently on a regular basis tap into. And then we can use those strengths to support other people, develop offers in our business, understand how we're likely to show up, understand the optimal expression of that defined center or not. Then we have undefined centers. So undefined centers are centers that are white in your chart, and we'll often have, or you will have in an undefined center, a gate coming off that. So you'll have just a gate, and that gate doesn't connect to the center on the other side. So in an undefined center, you have just a gate. And with undefined centers, I really think that this is energy that is present, but we can't necessarily connect to it on demand. But when we think about what an undefined center does, anytime you have an undefined or an open center, you can take in the energy of those around you and you can amplify it and you can mirror it back and you can almost use that energy to read other people. So when we think about an undefined center, the gate that you have present in that is your energy. I like to call it an anchor. In an undefined center, your gates are anchors to help you discern which energy is your own, okay? Because in an undefined center, this is where we can get conditioning. We can take on conditioning in an undefined center because we're taking in the other energies from other people. So in this undefined center, I'm taking in, I'm taking all this energy and I'm amplifying it back to the people around me. And ultimately these undefined centers, we have to almost allow that energy to filter through us and not attach to us so we don't get conditioned by it. And then we use our gates as an anchor point for the energy that is ours in that chart. So I'll use myself as an example. I am a projector. So I have an undefined sacro center, but I have gate nine and I have five gate nine placements. I have a lot of gate nine placements in my chart. And the theme of gate nine is focus. So I can read my client's energy in this gate, I can take in their sacral energy, say if they're an MG or a G, and I can discern how best they focus that energy. I can take that in and I run it through my lens of focus. But say I was with the client and they had gate five, but I don't have gate five, right? Say they had actually say they had the channel, the five 15 and five is the gate of consistency. And I just saw this client, and then I'm sitting there trying to plan for the rest of the day, and I'm like, oh, I really got to be consistent. I got to show up consistently, and I'm really pressuring myself around this. And the reality is that's not my energy. That's energetic residue left over from the person that I was just with. So in an undefined center, we actually have to clear out the energy. That's not ours in that center. Same goes for open, and I'll talk about that more in just a minute. But the reality is the gates that we have in these undefined centers give us an anchor point to say, oh, this is our energy, right? This is mine. Everything else, if I'm experiencing something other than that gate nine focus, it's not mine. If I'm feeling like my husband has, he's a fellow projector, he's got gate 30, 34. So if I'm feeling like I really need to exert my power, probably not my energy, it's probably his energy there. And I need to let that go, right? Because I have the 10 and he's got the 34. So when we're together, my sacrals lit up and I'm like, no, that's not my energy. So that's why when we think about conditioning, whether it's societal or people, specific people in our lives, or it's sort of cultural norms or generational norms or whatever it is, that is why some conditioning ultimately turns us into this not self, right? It's because we attach to that energy and it stays there. So if I'm always feeling like I need to be in this gate five consistency, and I don't have that gate in that undefined center, then I am, there's a reason why I'm feeling like that, right? And I've done, for me personally, I have an undefined identity center, and I have a parent who has a very defined identity center. So I've had to do a lot of deconditioning work to find self-love, right? To find or to come to terms with the fact in an undefined identity center, my purpose is more fluid, or I'm not necessarily here to have a uniform every day. My identity might show up a little bit different. And so I share this with you because I think when we think about these undefined identity centers, we don't think about how the gates that are present can act as anchors for us. And I think when we don't consider the anchor, we can come to this conclusion that this energy that's here, none of it's mine. And the reality is an undefined center that isn't the case. You have strengths there, and you have this ability to take in this information, but you're not here to attach to it. So that's the piece that you have to keep in mind when you're considering an undefined center. Now, when we think about open centers and open centers are the centers that are white, but there's no gate there. There's no colored in gate there at all, right? It's just completely open. So when we think about open centers, open centers function similarly to undefined centers in that they take in information and they amplify it back, or they mirror it back. But with an open center, there's no gate there. And one of the things that's really beautiful about both undefined and open centers, but particularly open centers, is that an open center can experience all of the gates inside of that center. So if you have an open center, you have the ability to experience all the energy that is in there based on who you are around, based on the transits. And the thing that makes that really cool is you have this beautiful fluidity. You have this beautiful fluidity there that can really operate in a great way to read the energy of others. And when I teach inside any of my programs, I always talk about how our undefined centers, that our undefined centers, how we read the energy of other people, and then we use our defined center strengths in order to provide consistent support, consistent information to other people based on the energy that we just read. So we take it in through our undefined centers, and then we use our defined centers to consistently figure out what's the plan. I'll use myself as an example again. So I have gate nine in my undefined sacral. I'm constantly taking in people's energy and figuring out, okay, this is the energy that's here, where should they focus it? And then I rely on my 1762 for my ANA to throat to say, okay, what's the big picture? And then all the details along the way for that focus. But when we have an open center, we don't have an anchor there. So it's completely fluid. And when it's complete completely fluid, we don't have any way to identify what is ours and what is not. And so any time it comes to the themes of whatever center that you have that's open, you have to understand that none of the energy there is yours. In our open centers, we are, from my experience, more susceptible to actually taking on conditioning from other people because we don't have that anchor point. And I often notice that when we think about open centers, they tend to exist in the extremes. They tend to exist on the edges of the theme. So if we think about an open head as an example, an open head is going to be constantly over consuming or consuming, nothing at all, right? An open solar plexus, as an example, is going to be constantly overly emotional or not emotional at all. Same thing for an open sacral. I'm going to be constantly overworking, overworking, overworking, or completely burned out or say in a spleen. I'm afraid of everything. I have no relationship with fear whatsoever. I will literally try and do anything. I have no fear. So when we think about these open centers, they're living in these extremes more often than not, because we don't have this ability to anchor ourselves into saying, oh, this is my energy. We identify with all of it because we're taking in the energy of other people and we're amplifying it. And that is why I spend so much time with the people in my world talking about how can we actually clear the filter of these centers? How can I clear the energetic filter of this? How can I clear the energetic residue left behind as part of moving about the world? And this is where I recently did a podcast on nutrition. This is where nutrition can come into play, right? Because if I'm feeding my body and I'm aligned to my variables on the digestion side and on the environment side, and I'm feeding my body properly, guess what? I'm less susceptible to the not self. And then in terms of how do we actually clean these, discard this energy that's in our bodies from other people in an undefined or open center, that's really where these practices of grounding and connecting our body come into play. So food obviously is a really big one. And food and nutrition, exercise, water intake, getting outside, connecting with nature. I know I use my P E M F mat a lot and really just use the grounding to earth frequency, walking, swimming, stinging, meditating. There's so many options. Options here are limitless. And one of the things that I say to people in truth three, five fashion, experiment with it. Figure Out how to do it. I will often change my clothes at the end of the day if I've had a lot of calls. Or I'll take a shower and I will literally go through the visualization process of washing other people's energy off me, or I'll zip up my energy at the beginning of the day. But it's all these little things that we often forget to do where we start to slowly over time, take on conditioning. And the reality is we can understand and have the knowledge and the depth of I know what a defined center is. I know what the definition of this center is. I know what the definition of the channel or the gate is that I have. I understand what an undefined center is, but we actually have to learn how to embody that information and live that information. It's not enough just to know it. We actually have to become it. We actually have to embody it and integrate it into our being and inhabit it in our ecosystem and in our environment. And the reality is that's that piece when we get into a practice. So as an example, if you have an open head or an open journaling might be really helpful for you because you are going to have a very fluid way of thinking about things. So that means you're not going to have a consistent way you process information. If you have a defined head or defined, you're going to have a very consistent way you process information. Your undefined or open counterparts do not have that. So how can you create some frameworks for yourself to one, dispel and discharge the energy that's in there from the people that you've been around? And then I think more importantly, how can you get clear so that you're not taking on this conditioning? So if you are somebody with an open Aja as an example, and you're constantly around somebody with the 1156, you might find yourself picking up those traits of that person, right? Because you're taking on that conditioning. And we know in the low expression, the 1156 can exaggerate its stories. And every telling of the story in the 56, it gets exaggerated more and more and more exaggerated. And so when we think about how conditioning can take over, it happens slowly over time, and it sort of erodes away at the beautiful fluidity in an open or an undefined center. But particularly in open centers, I know this to be a real challenge with people. And oftentimes what happens is, and I've seen this over and over and over again, we get into these open centers and people are often labeled, right? They'll go to a traditional doctor and they're labeled, they're labeled bipolar, they're labeled with a D H D, they're labeled with this or that, or an emotional disorder. And the reality is, at the end of the day, more often than not, when I see that appear in their chart, and then I hear about it in the real world from them, these extremes that happen where they've gone to traditional medicine are often as a result of an open center where they've taken on some conditioning where they're in the not self. And the reality is, look, I am not a medical professional. This is not medical advice. Please do consult your doctor, et cetera, et cetera. But also, I encourage you to do your due diligence here, right? Because I think a lot of times when we have these open centers, we often think that there's something wrong with us because we don't necessarily operate in the same way that other people operate. My nine year old, he's got a completely open sacral. And let me just tell you, this kid runs the extremes from being on to, I just want alone in solitude. And since we know this about him, and we know he's a manifestor and we know he is a one three, we work as a family really hard to honor his need for alone time. We honor his need for sort of space and rest when he needs it. And so all these little nuancey things, when we think about our centers and our definition are really important to consider when we think about how to actually get congruent with our design, how do we become synonymous with our design? And the reality is we not only have to have the knowledge, but we also have to embody it, and we embody it, and we become it, and we inhabit it, and we bring it into our ecosystem and the environment around us through these practices that allow us to sort of cleanse and clear the future, the filters of our undefined and open centers. And I think here, here's the thing to remember. This is what I'm going to leave you with. So if we think of this from the perspective of a defined center is you've got this cup and this cup, you use the same cup every day, and the only liquid that goes in this cup is coffee. It's a special cup, it's just for coffee. You don't put anything else in that cup, right? Then we have another cup. And that cup can be for anything, right? Anything can go in that cup, right? That's undefined centers. And then for open, there is no cup right there. It's almost like there is no cup. Where's the cup, right? So if that metaphor works better for you there, use that one. But I truly default to the fact that defined centers, these are fixed. You, these are consistent. You can tap into them. On demand are on defined centers. The gates that are present, there are anchors that gives us an anchor to say, Hey, this is mine. This is my energy here, this is mine. And then we've got open, which is fluid, right? And oftentimes I hear people too. Somebody recently posted on my Instagram and they were looking for hope with their open centers. Cause I think they had three open centers and they were struggling to see the positive aspects of these open centers. And the reality is when you kind of clear off that conditioning and you kind of dust off all the energetic residue that's been left behind, or the wake of somebody else's energy, the reality is open C centers provide this depth of wisdom because they can experience all of the energy that's there. And there's a great deal of wisdom and knowledge and compassion and understanding that can actually emerge from those centers when we can with more awareness, go into situations with other people as we move about our life with the knowing of, Hey, I got to after this situation, at the end of the day, I got to go clear my energetic filters here. And I think that's the thing. This is not something where you do one exercise one time and you're good when you have an on definer and open center. It's like a practice to incorporate into your life. And particularly if you're in business and you're working with lots of people and you're constantly interacting with other folks, this is something that you want to incorporate on the regular. Okay? So please do let me know if this resonates or you have any questions. You can always post them on the blog in the comment section. Matt and Jay discuss why learning the wrong lesson - or the right lesson - after we make a mistake will make all the difference between future successes or even greater failures. We're very excited to announce our books “Sexual Magnetism,” “The WASM Dating Handbook” and “Secrets of Sensual Massage” are now available! Follow these links to get your copies of "Sexual Magnetism," "The WASM Dating Handbook" and "Secrets of Sensual Massage" on Amazon.com. Intro: You're Going To Lose. Again. And Again. And Again. We discussed it last time. Yeah it sucks. Yeah it's a fact. Gotta accept it if we're going to live in the real world. What We Tell Ourselves After We Fail Post-failure self talk determines your direction Are you a loser? Do you fundamentally not have what it takes? Are you not smart enough, talented enough, strong enough, courageous enough, creative enough - to actually get the W? Are you really not cut out for this? Maybe you should give up… Honestly, what shitty things do you tell yourself after you fail? All the things…the horrible things…we say to ourselves The wrong lessons Why We're So Hard On Ourselves After Failing Often the wrong lessons come from our childhood Parents can be harsh, manipulative or just plain mean to us when we fail Teachers can crush our spirits and limit our belief in ourselves Classmates can be abusive and bully us Other family members and community can be snide, callous or even cruel Can be from adult failures So we slowly learn, over time, that whenever we fail, it's really, really BAD. May be from traumas Divorce, injury, bad girlfriends, fired at work, BUT WE CAN REWRITE OUR SCRIPTS! Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Lose Learn Question: When a highly successful person fails or makes a mistake, what do they do afterwards? How do they learn the right lesson instead of the wrong lesson? Examples: Temple Grandin Growing up autistic, with overwhelming fear, constant sensory overload and problems interacting with people -> Becoming a world-class animal behaviorist, one of the leading authorities on cattle behavior and helping to create dozens of improvements to humanely raising and slaughtering cattle, and the most famous autistic scientist to study and research autism (that is to say, from “inside” the condition) How did Grandin turn her failure into success? Daniel Everett (with the Piraha people in Amazon) Years spent with a dangerous Amazon tribe trying - and failing - to translate the most difficult language on earth -> Eventual success after transforming himself, his world view, his beliefs about culture (and even his belief in God) How did Everett turn his failure into success? Freddie Roach Failure as a boxer - had some good bouts and a solid performance at the beginning of his career but started to fall apart physically and never became famous -> Tremendous success as one of the most winning boxing trainers in history - training superstars like: Manny Pacquiao (8 World titles), Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Oscar De La and even Mike Tyson! - Also trained MMA greats Georges St. Pierre, Tito Ortiz and Anderson De Silva (among others) How did Roach turn his failure into success? How Do We Stop Learning the WRONG Lessons and Start Learning the RIGHT Lessons? Step 1. Accept Your Failure (and the pain!) Yeah you screwed up. It sucks. It hurts. That's okay. It's part of the process. Step 2. Become Aware of Your Natural Negative Response To Failure Pay attention to the negative tapes/stories/beliefs playing in your head after you fucked up Step 3. Figure Out the Truth of the Situation Don't lie to yourself or others. Step 4. Choose a Positive, Productive Response To Failure Think of some positive, success-oriented tapes you could play instead that will help you to accomplish your goal For example: How can I use this experience to make me stronger next time? What did I learn that I can use later? What do I want to avoid? What do I need to work on? Who do I need to get close to - or away from? Am I truly passionate enough about this goal to deal with this pain? Is this simply a minor setback or should I focus my energy in a different direction? Step 5. Go and Do Something Risky and Challenging Again Whatever you want in life, if you truly plan on getting it, if you're serious…you're gonna have to pay for it… …but once you've succeeded, once you can ride a bike or fly a plane or make a million dollar business or have sex with a beautiful woman…once you've learned the skill, you can do it again! Summary of Learning the Wrong Lesson Accept Your Failure Notice Your Shitty Mental Tapes Figure Out the Truth Choose a Positive, Productive Response To Failure Go Do the Thing Again…and Again…and Again…Until you get it! Conclusion If you're learning to ride horses and you get bucked off you have two choices: Get back on a horse or choose never to ride again for the rest of your life.

There are so many societal markers of success that it can be challenging to figure out what your definition of success is. When I was asked by the host of another podcast to unpack the word ‘success', I realized that my version of success is living a fulfilling life while doing impactful work. As we enter the new year, today I unpack my definition of success, what it means to me, and how I reached it. You'll hear a bit more about my journey; how my over-achieving hustle approach to life made me exhausted and less interesting and how I realized I needed to redefine success when I became aware that my values were changing. I then break down my four-part version of what success looks and feels like to me. I explain what my values are now and how I adjusted my life to be one that is reflective of them. I believe that even just defining success leads to fulfillment so if you want a great start to the new year, tune in for some insight on why you too may need to redefine your definition of success! Are you waiting for the noise to quieten and the disruption to pass? Are you hoping for some serenity? For some time, energy, and permission to finally focus on the stuff that matters to you? Or enough thinking space to eventually FIGURE OUT what that stuff is. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we explore our relationship with the concept of serenity. We ask whether it's a destination to reach or something a little closer to home. And if it isn't a destination, how can we create and nurture more of it in everyday life, so we engage with the here and now rather than always waiting for the next storm to pass? If we can't find it now, we won't find it then. If we can't find it here, we won't find it there. We started with what serenity is (and isn't). Serenity Gives Us Options | 6:34 It was suggested that Coco Chanel wore a hat at home when people visited to pretend she was on her way out, just in case she wanted an excuse to escape. Was this a source of serenity? Or did being poised and ready to run reflect a state of unpeaceful alertness and discontent? Serenity is Safety | 7:27 Serenity grows when we feel safe. But is feeling safe the same as feeling protected? Why does this difference matter? Serenity is Flow | 9:09 It's the inner flow of creativity, where we are drawn to what interests us, not what we should do to fit in or be accepted. Serenity is Surrender | 9:29 In many ways, serenity is the absence of pursuit. So if we search for it, it disappears. It's a sense of peace in the present. It's about HOW we go, do, and be, rather than WHERE we go, WHAT we do, and WHO we are. Serenity is Acceptance | 10:39 Disturbances are inevitable in life. Serenity allows space for an authentic reaction to the noise. While simultaneously holding space to pick from an ever-expanding library of potential responses we have chosen to build. Serenity is an Inner Home| 11:12 Like a home that comes with us wherever we go, it's something we grow, nurture, and reinforce within ourselves. It's built from the inside out with acceptance, connection, meaning, creativity (a spirit of expansion and possibility), and playfulness (inviting the time to stop and engage unproductively). Serenity is The Calm After a Storm | 12:26 Serenity is that feeling afterwards when everything is out. The emotions can be named, held, and let go. The clouds can disperse and dissipate. Serenity is not just the calm after the storm; it's surrender to the storm itself. It knows that to process life, sometimes a storm needs to happen. The Difference Between Serenity and Tranquility | 14:00 Serenity helps peace flow from the inside to the outside. Tranquility aims to invite peace from the outside to the inside.

This week's show is quite possibly the most incredible story I've ever heard. You are going to be riveted and you will never forget this conversation!13 years ago to the day that we recorded this interview, my guest was sentenced to life in prison! Yes, life in prison for my guest Damon West.Damon's story will make you uncomfortable at times. But ultimately, his story is all about OVERCOMING EXTREME ADVERSITY, TRANSFORMATION, and REDEMPTION.Do you want to learn how to turn your life around? This interview Is a master class! At 20, Damon was the starting quarterback at the University of North Texas when he suffered a career-ending injury. A few years later while training to be a stockbroker, Damon got hooked on methamphetamines, and he became the mastermind of a burglary ring to support his addiction. Eventually, he was arrested and sentenced to 65 years in a Texas maximum security prison. In prison, Damon got SOBER, went through a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING, and started down his true life's calling which he continued to build on after his parole more than 7 years later.Today he is a much sought-after speaker and best-selling author including co-writing “The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change.” with JON GORDON.Damon pulls no punches in a series of brutally HONEST stories when sharing his life and the mistakes he's made. You'll hear first-hand exactly what it feels like to be found guilty of major crimes, how he fought to survive and eventually THRIVE in prison, and how Damon turned his time in prison into an OPPORTUNITY.Be sure to listen to how he used the analogy of being like a COFFEE BEAN (yes, a coffee bean) as a critical part in changing his victim mindset to one of HOPE and redemption. In one of my favorite parts of this episode, Damon reveals his thoughts about GRATITUDE, his mission to HELP OTHERS, and why RESILIENCE is essential to living your best life. This week, pay attention to a man who has lived life on the edge in many ways, good and bad. Damon's past and present are filled with LESSONS that will make you STOP, THINK, and help you FIGURE OUT how you can lead a better life, too.

If you find yourself feeling like you always have to defend yourself or protect yourself from what others say, you might consider whether you struggle with defensiveness or not. Let's chat about how to depend less on defensiveness as a coping mechanism.Show Notes:Do you feel like people are always attacking you (verbally & emotionally, not physically) or inferring that you're wrong? Or maybe they are just pushing back on you in whatever you're saying or speaking about. But it feels like you are always having to defend yourself, right?Well, I want you to consider whether or not this is because you're being too defensive. When we feel like we are being attacked, it's hard to really listen to what someone else is saying to us, whether it's constructive or not. You feel under attack, so of course you don't really care what they are saying & push back. Defensiveness is all about feeling attacked & needing to emotionally protect ourselves from situations where our insecurities might be exposed or our identity, values or worth are being threatened. And defensiveness can be seen in a few different ways. Let's go over those really quick right now: Flat-out denial is the most classic example & you find yourself not accepting what the other person is saying, whether it's that you're not responsible for what happened or nothing is wrong at all.Projecting your feelings onto others is literally attributing those to someone else because you don't have the emotional ability to accept & process what you're dealing with. Someone will call you out for acting a certain way & you will say they are acting that actually, not you.We can also be defensive by rationalizing the situation by finding ways to change the truth to better fit our motive & justify any of our behavior. All of these & a few more not listed here are ways that defensiveness can be seen on a daily basis. But today I want to talk about how we can work on becoming less defensive & a little more vulnerable.Honor Your Feelings - Validate that you may be feeling hurt by what is being said & understand that it's ok to feel the way you're feeling. Your feelings are valid & important & not a problem. There is a reason you are feeling this way.Practice Not Reacting Immediately - Your feelings may lead you to want to say something defensive, which could be mean or rude & probably unnecessary. But just because our feelings are valid doesn't mean we need to act on them. It's helpful to take a beat & think about whether or not our reaction is in our best interest & will help with the issue.Ask Follow-Up Questions to Understand Where They Are Coming From - Instead of instinctively attacking what they are saying, find out why they are saying it. Dig a little deeper into the reasons behind their words to better understand.Figure Out a Conclusion Together - You might not always be able to do this with the other person, but it's important to end with a resolution in mind. Figure out what needs to happen next, whether that is owning up & taking responsibility for what happened, apologizing for blaming someone else or admitting that what has happened is a bigger deal than it was previously made. April is Financial Literacy Month so it's the perfect time to talk about money with Meka West of Penny Smart Girl! Meka is a certified accountant and she is the founder of online bookkeeping and money coaching firm called Penny Smart Girl. April is also the month for tax-deadlines so we are picking Meka's brain today on all things bookkeeping and tax-related! She has generously shared her experience and advice in this Podcast and in this blog post. She is seriously a wealth of information and generosity! Let's get to know our bookkeeper friend, Meka West: 1. Tell us about yourself. Who is Meka West? I'm a Midwest original that moved to Seattle in my twenties. I bought a house at age 21, raised my son as a single mom until he was 12, and have been lucky to work in some great roles along the way. I believe in living life with a cherry on top. This means creating a life balanced with work but also time to enjoy the things that bring us joy and make us feel. So even you aren't a fan of cherries, whatever your cherry on the top moment is… the moment that makes you pause and cherish that moment, that's what I mean. I enjoy cherry on top moments with my husband, my son, our two very spoiled rescue cats, Nin-Nin the secret ninja, and Jackson the mischievous tabby. I also love traveling the world and enjoying yummy food adventures. 2. Tell us about Penny Smart Girl. Penny Smart Girl is a virtual bookkeeping and money coaching firm. Penny Smart Girl (nicknamed PSG) was born from my love for empowering people to be more in control of their money story. It doesn't matter if you like numbers or not, it's more about getting in touch with the life you want to live. What goals do you have? What kind of work fulfills you? That's what the numbers can reveal. And that's what having a handle on your money can unlock. I consider myself a business owner first, an accountant second. As a business owner first, it positions me to be a small biz advocate and money mentor. 3. Why might a business owner need a bookkeeper and/or accountant? Why might someone need money coaching? There's a common statistic I always hear that states “half of new businesses fail during the first year,” which is alarming to think about the success rate is only 50%. However, the Small Business Administration (SBA) says that's not necessarily true. They say the more accurate breakdown is: 30% of new businesses fail during the first two years of being open 50% during the first five years 66% during the first 10 years And at a business conference I attended a few years back, a survey said 89% of small businesses said they were more successful when working with an accounting professional. I feel that often business owners try to do everything in their business because they are new or can't afford to hire a bookkeeper or accountant to manage their “books”. But I strongly believe that if you have an accounting professional set up your systems and train you how to maintain it, you really set yourself up for success in the long run. I'm sure I could maybe figure out how to make home repairs on my own, but it would involve me literally “winging” it. And I certainly wouldn't feel confident that I did everything right. Because I didn't go to school for that and home repair is not one of my gifts. So, hiring someone that has been trained in that skill, is going to be my best option. Money coaching is often more focused on mindset, strategy, and goals. It is something that can be done as a standalone service or in conjunction with bookkeeping/accounting services. Often money coaching focuses on cash flow, budgeting, rolling out new service offerings, and keeping an eye on any income goals you have. Working with professionals can really help you to start out on a solid foundation. Start small with a training session and reassess as your business grows and gets too much for you to handle all the moving parts. 4. What bookkeeping/accounting programs/apps should a business owner have/use? QuickBooks is the standard that the majority of Banks, CPAs, auditors, the IRS are equipped to work with that. I would say Xero is a close second to being a standard/common program. However – Wave and Freshbooks are nice entry-level software that seems to be user-friendly for non-accountants. I can't speak in depth on them because they aren't designed for an accountant like me, but the key is to find a system that works for you that you will use frequently. The results to consider is how easily can it compile the data needed to get your reports to your CPA or yourself at tax time. 5. What important tax deadlines should small business owners in the USA and the State of Washington be aware of? It's important to know that taxes do not just mean the IRS (which is federal taxes). There are also city and state business taxes. The deadlines for city and state taxes will vary based on the size and type of business you have. Federal annual income taxes are due: March 15th for Corporations, Partnerships, and LLCs that file as an S Corp. April 15th for Sole Proprietors, and single-member LLCs. Business & Occupation (B&O) Sales/Excise Tax deadline (City/State) Typically, it's due annually. But can be monthly or quarterly depending on your state, and size and type of business. For example, in Washington state, if you provide services only, not retail sales – your deadline is annually and is due January 31st. Self-Employment Estimated Tax (Federal, due to the IRS) This tax is due quarterly. Please note that the quarters are divided so that you actually only pay it three of them during each year, rather than the traditional four quarters per year: Quarter 1 (covers Jan 1 – Mar 31st) Due July 15th, 2020 (normally due April 15th but extended because of Covid-19) Quarter 2 (covers Apr 1 – May 31st) Due July 15th, 2020 (normally due June 15th but extended because of Covid-19) Quarter 3 (covers Jun 1 – Aug 31st) Due Sep 15th, 2020 Quarter 4 (covers Sep 1 – Dec 31st) Due Jan 15th of the following year. Link to these dates on the IRS site: https://www.irs.gov/faqs/estimated-tax/individuals/individuals-2 6. What documentation does a small business owner need to file their taxes? To file your taxes, you need a listing of all your business sales, and all business expenses for the year you are filing. Keep in mind that typically states require you to report your gross income, but the IRS considers your income and expenses. So, having the total income earned and total expenses is the best documentation to have. Remember receipts are just your backup. Tax time is not the time to start organizing your box or folder of receipts. It should be something you do on a monthly, quarterly basis. Good recordkeeping (or bookkeeping) is the methodology of compiling those receipts, invoices, etc. into a usable report that summarizes your data for you. If you are using an accounting system, the common reports to use are the Profit and Loss report and a Balance Sheet report. If you are tracking in Excel or a notebook, try to organize it by expense category and by month. I recommend having a summary page that will show a recap of your full year. 7. What are common business expenses that small business owners can deduct from their taxable income? The common business expenses that they can deduct are: Car expenses and mileage Office expenses, including rent, utilities, etc. Office supplies, including computers, software, etc. Health insurance premiums Business phone bills Continuing education courses Parking for business-related trips Business-related travel expenses, including flights, rental cars, hotels, etc. Postage 8. During this time of economic downturn, what are your top 3 budgeting tips for small business owners? Especially considering our current events, I would say looking at your budget and doing a bit of spring cleaning is highly recommended right now to keep your business sustainable: Take care of yourself. Try to stay calm, safe & healthy. It's okay if business slows down right now. You can use the quieter time to strategize for new opportunities. Or to build more connections within your network for when things pick up again. Figure Out what's the “Cost to Run Your Business” Numbers. Know your numbers. Calculate the amount of income that comes in each month (if it varies, look at the last 3 or 6 months as an estimate) Create a list of all expenses each month Subtracting your expenses from your income is your “bottom-line” aka your profit. That's the base amount you need to sustain your business. Minimize Expenses/Maximize Income/Savings To minimize: In these uncertain times try to keep expenses to a minimum if you can. Speak with vendors on putting services on hold or reducing the rates temporarily if possible Hold off on big investments To maximize: If you can reduce spending, put the savings aside to build up a savings reserve. If there is a new service offering you can create an offer, do it! And if you're able to keep your expenses low so you can consider this new income source a “bonus” for your business. 9. What else should our listeners, many of whom operate small craft businesses, be aware of with respect to their obligation to file their taxes? Check with your city and state to make sure what the income threshold is for when you are required to have a permit or business license. Often new and or small businesses think they aren't a “real” business if they are some large corporation. Checking this, in the beginning, can save you from penalties or fines down the line.
