It's Big Guy a go-go! Mike Allred introduces the latest addition to the Legend line-up in this thunderous two-part story pitting Frank Miller and Geof Darrow's Big Guy against Snap City's super-sensation, Madman! Madman's mad-scientist buddy, Dr. Boiffard, is suffering from an ever-expanding brain that's soaking up information like a roll of quilted Bounty. The American government figures Boiffard's got one valuable load of headcheese so it sends its golden retriever, The Big Guy, to reel in the big fish! Can Madman stop the ten-foot tall, twelve-hundred-pound armory from kidnapping his old buddy?! What doesn't kill him makes him sore for weeks!" Published by Dark Horse in March, 1995. The complete former web comic is now fully collected and is AdHouse Books final offering. Back in the early 2000s, the Wachowski siblings founded Burleyman Entertainment. Today we have a special show where we introduce to you the creator of The Monkey King, Jerry Ma. You can find Jerry on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/epicprops/ and on FB: https://www.facebook.com/Epic-Proportions-190427348522/ Taiwanese American creator Jerry Ma (EPIC PROPORTIONS, VIBE Hong Kong) is supporting AAPI Heritage Month and #STOPASIANHATE this May by bringing one of Chinese literature’s most enduring characters, the Monkey King to modern day New York in THE MONKEY KING: A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY which will be launching May 3rd at 11AM EST on Kickstarter. In this STRANGER THINGS meet COWBOY BEBOP original, Jerry Ma hits home as he shows his native New York City falling apart with the Empress of Chinatown turning her back on the City. Tripitaka the monk must locate Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy to help her make the journey west to Chinatown San Francisco in hopes of finding enlightenment to then go back and save New York from itself! Creator Jerry Ma says “Every year we see multiple reboots of the Monkey King. Each one more action oriented than the next. But, the actual story was meant to find enlightenment through Buddhism, which would be discovered through their journey West to India. I’d like to rediscover the adventure and magic that the story was supposed to be about. And rather than making their armor shinier, I’m giving them sneakers that will match their hoodies better, I’ll have them dive into Chinatown New York in a way I don’t think we’ve seen done before.“ Ma adds back in March, “I had donated just under $2500 with proceeds from my online sales in two weeks, to the GofundMe/AAPI to help combat the rising anti-Asian sentiment. As amazing as that was, it felt a bit hollow as I wasn’t able to actually see any help being done. After talking with the amazing group of people helping me with this campaign, Geof Darrow, Allan Dorison, Jim Cheung, David Soto and Lisa Y. Wu, through our Stretch Goals, we’ll be donating money to small businesses in Chinatown New York. I’ll quite literally be walking into small businesses and handing over $250 in cash to X amount based off of the success of this Kickstarter campaign to small businesses myself. I know it isn’t much, but at least this way, I know these businesses will be receiving the money directly from me. My family has a small business ourselves, an art store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan called Janoffs. So, I know all the hurdles these businesses are facing. Show Notes: I talk toons and kickstarting art projects with Sal "Uncle Sal" Abbinanti. We discuss his early work in advertising, self-publishing comics, representing other artists, and his first ever Kickstarter for his first ever graphic novel- "The Hostage". From his Kickstarter campaign page: By day, Sal Abbinanti is the art rep for comic book superstars Alex Ross and Bill Sienkiewicz, but by night he, too, is an artist. For more than two decades, the Chicago native has been obsessed with creating a graphic novel inspired by a visit he made to Brazil when he was in his early 20's. Now, Abbinanti is launching a Kickstarter campaign for his dream project, a 115-page full-color original graphic novel set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro titled THE HOSTAGE. “When I was 25, I spent six months living in Rio de Janeiro,” said Abbinanti. “I was a starry eyed, full of shit college kid who went there for a Brazilian vacation of samba, nightlife, and beaches. To see the level of poverty, suffering, and death in Rio de Janeiro was eye opening. I will never forget it. THE HOSTAGE is my tribute to the amazing country and especially to the kids living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.” Loosely inspired by the culture and religions of Brazil like the Umbanda and the Candomblé, Abbinanti has been building the world of THE HOSTAGE in his studio for over 10 years—sketching characters, panels, and scripting pages. Abbinanti's unique art style and vibrant color choices create a spellbinding effect. THE HOSTAGE tells the story of a group of street kids who are abandoned by society. Dying every day from poverty and gang violence, the kids join together and summon a mystical spirit—THE HOSTAGE—who will protect them and avenge the deaths of their friends. THE HOSTAGE Kickstarter campaign includes limited edition lithographs from Alex Ross, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jeffrey Alan Love, Sanjulián, Geof Darrow, and Eric Powell, as well as tiers with original sketch cards, postcards, and bookmarks by Abbinanti. The crowdfunding campaign is live now and concludes on February 25th, with pledge tiers ranging from a digital edition available in both English and Portuguese (translated by Kelsey Trotta), to The Complete HOSTAGE Package, which includes an 11x17 original drawing by Sal Abbinanti and a complete set of lithographs by all guest artists. World-building has been strangely silent since The Matrix (1999), a concept originally left for dead, pushed forward into standard by will, belief, and a corps of indelible artists. Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce - two craftspeople first to join the legion - assemble here to add their DNA to our dish. Filmmaking with vision is a winnable war-of-art; to wit, the great irony of a film is can’t know we need one until it’s been made.

Today, we're excited to bring you our conversation with Geof Darrow. Darrow is largely known for his incredibly detailed artwork on graphic novels Hard Boiled, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, Shaolin Cowboy, and many more. The hyper-violent Shaolin Cowboy is where much of his energy has been focused lately, and the recent trade collection, Who'll Stop the Reign?, is more of what you've come to love about the book. In short, it's a bloody takedown of contemporary culture, cell phones, and Donald Trump. On this episode, we talk about Lead Poisoning (Dark Horse's gorgeous art book collecting some of his pencil art), his notorious attention to detail, Shaolin Cowboy, mixing politics and social satire in the pages of his books, and how he translated his experience with properties such as Super Friends and Richie Rich into the hyper-violent, hyper-detailed graphic novels for which he's known.

This is the "Big Damn" Frank Miller episode. We look at his entire body of work while at once barely touching on Sin City or 300. In particular, more attention should be paid to his collaborations with David Mazzuchelli, Geof Darrow, Chris Claremont, Dave Gibbons, Klaus Janson, and Bill Sienkiewicz. Meanwhile, John culls his collection by hundreds of comics, and we discuss the hard choices we make going digital.

This week on The Comics Alternative podcast, Derek and Gene review Paul Pope's Battling Boy (First Second), Geof Darrow's Shaolin Cowboy #1 (Dark Horse), and Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder's Rocket Girl #1 (Image). The Two Guys with PhDs begin with Battling Boy, placing it within the larger context of Paul Pope's body of work — seeing similar themes, stylistic flair, characterization, and tone found in comics such as 100%, Heavy Liquid, and THB – and also reading it in light of other First Second publications. Both are fascinated by what Pope is doing in this all-age (?) superhero (?) sci-fi narrative, and they are eagerly anticipating the next installment of the story, The Rise of Aurora West. Gene brings keen insights not only to the metaficational aspects of Battling Boy, but also Pope's use of lettering and font choices. The Two Guys are not in the same kind of agreement with Shaolin Cowboy. Derek feels that it's one of the most visually intriguing, and funniest, comic books of the year, while Gene wants more story. (And Derek recommends that Gene read the first Shaolin Cowboy series from Burlyman Entertainment…although even he has his problems with the way that first series unfolded.) But they do agree on Montclare and Reeder's Rocket Girl, feeling that the series starts off with a blast — sorry for the pun — and promises interesting things in the issues to come, especially in terms of time travel twists.
