Seducers, Flatterers, Sorcerers, and more! Dcn. Harrison Garlick is joined by Noah Tyler, CFO of the Classic Learning Test, and Gabriel Blanchard, a staff writer for CLT, to discuss the first part of the 8th Circle: Simple Fraud (Cantos 18-25).Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for more information.Check out our written GUIDE to Dante's Inferno: 80+ Questions and Answer.FROM THE GUIDE:53. What happens in the Eighth Circle of Hell: Simple Fraud (Canto 18)The Eighth Circle of Hell holds the souls of those King Minos found guilty of simple fraud and is composed of “ten stone ravines called Malebolge (Evil Pockets), and across each bolgia is an arching bridge.”[1] Each of the ten bolgias (pits, ditches, pockets, etc.) is filled with souls guilty of a different species of simple fraud: (1) panders and seducers (2) flatters (3) simoniacs (4) sorcerers (5) barrators (6) hypocrites (7) thieves (8) deceivers (9) sowers of discord and (10) falsifiers. Each bolgia in Malebolgia exhibits a different contrapasso.54. What happens in the first ditch (Canto 18)?After leaving Geryon, the Pilgrim observes the souls in the first ditch. Here, “two files of naked souls walked on the bottom” with each line walking a different direction.[2] The Pilgrim also notes, “I saw horned devils with enormous whips lashing the backs of shades with cruel delight.”[3] The souls here are pimps or panders in one line and seducers in the other. Notably, Dante the Pilgrim sees Jason the Argonaut suffering amongst the seducers.[4] Notice, however, that these seducers are not those who fell into passion, like Francisca, but rather those who act with malice to deceive others. It is the malice of malevolent nature of these sins that distinguish them from the incontinent sins.55. What happens in the second ditch (Canto 18)?Leaving the first bolgia (ditch), the Pilgrim and Virgil come upon the souls of the flatters suffering in the second ditch. The Pilgrim observes, “Now we could hear the shades in the next pouch whimpering, making snorting grunting souls… from a steaming stench below, the banks were coated with a slimy mold that suck to them like glue, disgusting to behold and worse to smell.”[5] Here, grunting in a ditch of excrement, are the flatterers. The contrapasso of the second ditch invites a stark juxtaposition between the honeyed words of flattery and the sordid reality of their deception. The Pilgrim makes this quite evident in his observation of Thais: “that repulsive and disheveled tramp scratching herself with shitty fingernails, spreading her legs while squatting up and down.”[6] Repulsed by Thais, Virgil and the Pilgrim move on. It should be noted, however, that this flattery is a malicious flattery intended to deceive.56. How is flattery a worst sin than lust, murder, or suicide?

The Amish Inquisition Podcast

This week Stig returns for his third appearance on the show. Stig has been exploring The Pillars Of Hercules and The Richat Structure once again since our last chat. Find Stig here:  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@stig/featured Twitter - https://twitter.com/stigemup Tychos Event: https://lawfulrebel.com/this-june-15th-presentation-of-a-groundbreaking-astronomical-discovery/ From the web: The Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara, has been proposed as a potential location for the legendary lost city of Atlantis. Here are some intriguing points: Geological Feature: The Richat Structure, located in Mauritania, is a deeply eroded domal structure that overlies a still-buried alkaline igneous intrusion. Similarities to Atlantis:Circular Design: The Richat Structure fits Plato's description of Atlantis, with its concentric circles. Location: While Plato explicitly placed Atlantis beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the Strait of Gibraltar), some researchers speculate that the Richat Structure could be a real-world inspiration for Atlantis. Cultural Memory: The story of Atlantis has been linked to memories of the Thera eruption, which affected Minoan settlements on Crete. Some argue that the Richat Structure preserves this memory12. However, significant challenges remain, including the structure's elevation and the lack of archaeological evidence supporting a once-inhabited city3. Whether the Richat Structure truly holds the secrets of Atlantis remains an enduring mystery.   The Pillars Of Heracles: The Pillars of Hercules, also known as the Gates of Gades, are legendary promontories flanking the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Here are some key points: Northern Pillar: Calpe Mons, identified as the Rock of Gibraltar, stands on the European side. Southern Pillar: The identity of Abila Mons (the southern pillar) has been debated. The two likely candidates are Monte Hacho in Ceuta and Jebel Musa in Morocco. Mythology: According to Greek mythology, Hercules performed the tenth of his twelve labours by fetching the Cattle of Geryon from the far West and bringing them to Eurystheus. This marked the western extent of his travels. Atlantis Connection: Plato placed the legendary island of Atlantis beyond the Pillars of Hercules. Symbolism: Renaissance tradition associated the pillars with the warning “Ne plus ultra” (nothing further beyond), cautioning sailors not to venture farther. Geographical Significance: The Strait of Gibraltar, formed by Hercules, connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Historical References: Pliny the Elder mentioned the Pillars in his work. They have fascinated explorers, writers, and artists throughout history #atlantis #atlantisresearcher #prehistory _______________________________ Follow us here: https://allmylinks.com/the-amish-inquisition Signup for the newsletter, join the community, follow us online, and most importantly share links!  Producer Credits for Ep 325: Emma Bridges _______________________________ Leave us a voicemail: 07562245894 Message us here....follow, like, subscribe and share. We find out how the Geryon Universal Bike Packing system came to be, how he co-founded Trxstle, and what's on the horizon for the company. We also dig into Morgan's biking journey and how Trxstle aims to solve some of the biggest pains in the biking world. Bike Packing Show Notes with Morgan Misek 01:53 - We had an episode with John Smigaj before where we talked about their fly rod carrier. Morgan Misek tells us how he co-founded Trxstle with John. They worked together as mechanical engineers before starting their engineering firm. 03:53 - They realized they had some great product ideas they'd like to turn into reality, so they launched Trxstle. The first product they sold was a T-shirt, but their first actual product was the CRC System. Trxstle collaborates with diverse artists to create unique shirt designs as a part of their Artist Series. 05:49 - John introduced Morgan to fly fishing, and Morgan introduced John to mountain biking. They combined the two activities to ride to fishing spots. Morgan grew up riding in the woods and later raced mountain bikes in college. 08:19 - Morgan discusses the origin of the Geryon, one of the first product ideas they had when starting. The purpose was to provide a means for bikers to carry any gear while mountain biking. 13:26 - The Geryon has 30 lbs gear capacity, 15 lbs on the front + 15 lbs on the rear rack. 19:28 - Morgan shares his top recommendations for bike riders to check out, including Reece Wallace, Brandon Semenuk, the Athertons, who host a race series in the UK called Hardline, and anyone riding in the Redbull Rampage. 20:18 -  The name "Geryon" comes from a three-headed giant in Greek mythology who was related to Medusa. Geryon was also the name of a steam locomotive used during the 1800s. 23:50 - We talk about the success of the Trxstle clothing line. Their Tumbleweed Series has been very popular. 26:17 - Morgan highlights the unique feature of Trxstle's CRC System, explaining that its telescopic collapsibility sets it apart from other similar products. 33:40 - Trxstle has new upgrades and a new color option for the CRC system. 34:25 - Morgan also talked about their waterproof cases, like the River Locker Compact Waterproof Case and the Big Water case. 36:00 - We did the two-minute drill with Morgan. I asked him how he felt seeing his product out in the world. For Morgan, success is to see other people use the thing he designed. 38:00 - Morgan's superpower is visualizing things in 3D space. 41:00 - Morgan advises that to find the perfect bike, it's best to consult your local bike shop for expert recommendations. With their knowledge of the local trails and the price points, they can help you find the right bike that suits your needs. 42:40 - Aside from biking, Morgan also likes skiing and surfing. He said he wanted to surf in Alaska. 47:31 - John Gierach was on the podcast, so I asked Morgan his favorite book. His go-to book is Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. We've seen it all. Now we just have to get out. And to do that, we have to make a big turnaround on Virgil's shoulders. Right at Satan's butt.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we pass the center point in the universe, a place where the action of grace suddenly comes into focus. Satan is the way out of hell. Satan is the pivot for the entire universe. The way down has been the way up all along. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:38] My English translation of the passage: INFERNO, Canto XXXIV, lines 70 - 93. If you'd like to read along, print it off, or drop a comment, please go to my website: markscarbrough.com.[04:18] What is Dante-the-pilgrim's motivation? How does he know to grab on to Virgil?[05:25] Virgil is the only one who can get them out of hell. Is that thematic? Part of the poetics? Or the theology?[06:43] Dante-the-pilgrim never touches Satan. Is that thematic? Part of the allegory? Why can Virgil touch Satan?[08:14] Satan is not held in place by the ice sheet of Cocytus.[09:12] Satan is very anatomical, almost a cut of meat.[11:13] Satan's anus is the center of the universe. Or maybe his genitals.[13:12] Does Satan need a digestive tract?[15:22] Do Satan and the angels need genitals?[18:10] Dante-the-pilgrim is confused about Satan's directionality but never about Virgil's.[20:12] This passage echoes the descent on Geryon's back in its rhyme at the same spot (lines 82 and 84).[22:27] Satan is now upside down--and named with his Christian title for the first time.[24:08] Why is Dante-the-poet irritated at those who don't get it? The beginning of reason and the intellect![27:08] The three instances of "felix culpa" (fortunate fall) in this passage: Satan is the way out, Satan is the axis for the universe, and the way down has been the way up all along.

The demi-god Hercules was regarded as a great hero for the people of Rome and Greece. He was known for performing various deeds that no mortal could. Hercules was an everyman who had bad days and even died due to another's trickery. These stories were entertaining, but they also told an important lesson to an audience: If bad things can happen to a hero, they have nothing to be ashamed of.The most famous of his activities was the 12 labours that Hercules was asked to perform by his cousin Eurystheus, who was the king of Mycenae and Tiryns. The first set of labours numbered only ten, but they eventually grew to twelve. To kill the Nemean Lion who was impervious to all weapons. To kill the monster known as the Hydra who had nine venomous heads and, when one was cut off, two more would grow in its place. To capture the Cerynitian Hind who was sacred to the goddess Artemis. To capture the Erymanthian Boar. Cleaning the Stables of Augeius in a day.To drive away the Stymphalian Birds. To bring back the Cretan Bull from Knossos. To bring back the Mares of Diomedes. To bring back Hippolyte's Girdle. To bring back the cattle of Geryon, king of Cadiz. To bring back the Golden Apples of Hesperides. To bring back Cerberus, the guard dog of the underworld.Read more at https://mythlok.com/hercules/

This week on Prophecy Radio, Karen and Kristen discuss the latest casting additions to Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptation, including Chiron, Mr. D, Mrs. Dodds, Sally Jackson, and Gabe Ugliano. In addition, the hosts once again tackle all the latest news across the Rick Riordan Universe (including Rick Riordan Presents) as well as return to their Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth review with chapters 7 and 8. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:50) We're kicking off this week's episode with Rick's June 12 blog post. It's always good when Rick reminds us how complicated it is to make a TV show! What's an average day like for Rick and Becky? It's awesome to hear they're still doing rigorous COVID testing. Can you believe how many sets they've already gone through!? Rick is ALWAYS working on stuff—including a new book! Episodes are constantly getting tweaked, but this is a good thing. We once again need to recommend the behind-the-scenes documentary for Frozen 2. Rick also lets us in on some industry secrets. The Last Fallen Moon by Graci Kim is out in the world and getting translated into Polish, Turkish, and Italian! Don't forget to listen to our Graci Kim interview from last week! We saw some treetops and got very excited. BTW, we're not going to speculate about cast members (you can visit @updatespercy for that) Read Riordan had a queer characters article go up, and we talk about why it was taken down. Maybe Moon Knight could raise interest in the Kane Chronicles adaptation! Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast (00:27:17) Stay up to date with all of the Percy Jackson TV show cast announcements right here. First up, Virginia Kull! Despite the fact that our dreams were dashed, we're really excited to see her in this role. It's very easy to love and empathize with Sally as a character. What do we know her from? Thank goodness she chose to become an actor instead of a doctor! We're still riding high about the fact that we got Jason Mantzoukas right! Even Rick thinks he's perfect for this role. He's also been in a MILLION projects, so there's plenty of proof he can play a character like this one. And who knew he was an accomplished jazz drummer!? Megan Mullally as Mrs. Dodds wasn't who we were expecting, but we're VERY excited about this. Her role on Will & Grace is iconic, but she's been in plenty of other projects, too. She and her husband also have a podcast! Glynn Turman has had a legendary career, and we are in awe of everything he's accomplished. He's also pretty much a real-life Chiron without the horse body. We get excited about the roles we've seen him in, then talk once again about his first prominent role and the relationship he'll probably build with Walker. And then there's Timm Sharp, who is probably a cool dude even if he's playing a terrible character. He's been in some not-so-family friendly roles, but he's clearly a funny guy. We'll do another episode like this when more casting drops! Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapter reviews (00:54:37) It feels so good to be back to our chapters! Let's start with Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 7. Kampê is a super old monster and that makes her even more scary! Briares is interesting and sad. Thank goodness for Paul Blofis. Poor Tyson was a bit disappointed, but we love seeing the growth in his and Percy's relationship. Long live Dippin' Dots, the ice cream of the future! It's time to visit a demon dude ranch in Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 8. Blanket pronunciation apology! The idea of immortality and the fact that it's not a guarantee is so interesting. Percy and Annabeth's friendship is so healthy and beautiful. Prophecy Count #19! Triple G Ranch is kind of an awful place but the animals are awesome! Geryon is not an easy guy to imagine. It was nice to see Nico, but he's definitely going through some stuff. Who paid to keep Percy and the others safe? So. Much. Poop. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 38, where we'll do a Monster Guide on hellhounds! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. We've come to the middle of INFERNO and the last bits of canto XVII. We've come to a tour de force of the imagination and a minor (foreshadowing?) comedic ending at the center of the hellish canticle. Dante's poetics have never been greater. At least, so far. Just wait until you see what's ahead. But let's stop and marvel at the medieval notion of flight on the back of the beast of fraud in a canto about those who sin against art. Could things get any more complicated? Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE: [01:05] My English translation of Inferno, Canto XVII, lines 100 - 134. If you'd like to read along, you can find this passage on my website, markscarbrough.com. [04:29] How does Geryon fly? He swims. [06:36] Why is there a giant cliff between the 7th and 8th circles of hell, between the violent and the fraudulent? Is there a thematic, structural, or even psychological rationale for this cliff? [09:13] Phaeton and Icarus: two tragedies from classical literature (from Ovid's Metamorphoses, in fact), set down in the middle of COMEDY, in the middle of a passage in the center of INFERNO that has a comedic ending. [13:53] The imaginative tour de force of flight. [15:21] The falcon image in the passage. The last time we saw a falcon was at INFERNO, Canto III, at another border: where the damned rush into Charon's boat. [17:34] The many ways Geryon is described. Dante the poet seems to be pulling out all the poetic stops. Is he trying to keep from sinning against nature with this unnatural flight? Or is he winking at us from behind the text? [23:12] Don't give up on Virgil just yet! Our poet may believe he's moved beyond Virgil, but the classical poet still controls Geryon's flight. Support this podcast

Our pilgrim walks back from the usurers, sitting out on the edge of the seventh circle of INFERNO, and finds that he must climb aboard the awful beast of fraud. Drama! But there's so much more. This passage reveals our poet as a creator of modern narrative. And it shows us that he's taking full control of his poem. Virgil, be gone! Brunetto, too! This is Dante's work. Here are the segments of this episode: [01:12] My English translation of INFERNO, Canto XVII, Lines 79 - 99. You can read along with this translation on my website, markscarbrough.com. [03:06] More about "back ends." And a forecast: the way down will involve the beasts of hell from now on. [05:38] Dante is afraid--but he was just so brave. What's up with the changed emotions? [08:27] The pilgrim's internal motivations are always the final stop in the narrative technique--just one of the ways our poet Dante is so modern. [10:03] On touching the beasts of hell! [10:47] Why is the pilgrim so silent in Canto XVII of INFERNO? [12:43] More about the corporeality of the afterlife. [14:31] Virgil is both a representative of a class and himself. He's Virgil in his Virgilness. Another way that our poet anticipates the problems of modern narrative. [19:01] Finally, the beast is named! Geryon! Except that only makes things more confusing. Week 13: At the waterfall edge of the 7th circle Dante gives up his belt to conjure a ride. What is the truth which seems a lie? Poetic allegory of course. For Dante breaks the 4th wall to give his poem a name, Comedy, and to swear that he saw a beast swim in the air up the waterfall. Geryon is the impossible thing, but that's ok, he's a fraud. No, he's The Fraud and through his depiction we see the truth. Fraud or no, the brute animal is the only way down into the 8th circle. And even with the command to be strong and daring, Dante is afraid like Phaethon and Icarus as Geryon descends. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

The great barrier and waterfall created by Jeff Dungfelder. "After Dante takes us through the Vestibule for “undecided” and Agnostics; a place for Virtuous Pagans who lived good lives but weren’t baptized; then four levels of punishment for those whose sins were based on lack of self-control; a separate level for Heretics; and finally a level for those whose sins were violent.  "To get to the next level Virgil and Dante have to ride down through the Great Barrier and Waterfall on the back of the winged mythological creature Geryon. Here Dante informs us that “there is a place in Hell called Malebolge” (literally translated as ‘evil pockets’) where those guilty of Fraud and Malice have been consigned.   "Their sins run deeper than simple lack of self-control or violence. The sinners (Pimps, Simonists, Soothsayers) are intentionally deceptive and malicious so the punishments are more severe. "My piece of music “Their Sins Run Deep” is a reflection about where they have been and where they are headed. The journey downward is full of many details, many things to think about, to contemplate.  "Listening to these musical details is the key of discovery in searching for our true selves. In Dante’s view of human nature we’re all hypocrites in one way or another. But some hypocrites learn about their true selves. Then they repent and make sincere efforts to do better. Hell, on the other hand, is reserved as a kind of “college of sullen hypocrites.”  "Sullen students never learn and never change; not now, not ever. That’s why they’re in Hell forever. Their sins run deep." Part of the Inferno project to imagine and compose the sounds of Dante’s Hell, marking the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy. Hon förhåller sig inte till ett original, utan till en kopia av en kopia. Utan någon sanning i botten. Utan någon sanning i botten. Samma vassa tajming i kvickheterna. Carson är trots yvigheten ofta spot on. För hur känner sig egentligen den vilsne tonårsbögen? Jo, som ett rött monster med knöliga vingar som inte förmår bära honom. Eller: Hur känns den språkliga erfarenhet, som säger att vi aldrig helt möts i våra enskilda förnimmelser? Hur ser din färg rött ut?, som Sonja Åkesson, och Ludwig Wittgenstein hade uttryckt saken. För mig är rött färgernas färg. De starka känslorna, de alarmerande situationerna, det som står ut. Stoppljus. Varningstriangel. Solens sista döende strålar. Röda dagar i almanackan. Röd matta. Red light district. Rödluvans kappa i den mörka skogen. Röd ros. Att se rött. Eld. Djävul. Vrede. Revolution. Hjärta. Kärlek. Krig. Blod. Dante is barred from entering the hill of salvation by three beasts that bar his path (Avarice, Pride and Lust). Beatrice descends from above and asks the poet Virgil to guide Dante through the Nine Circles of Hell. Virgil leads Dante to a cave where they find the river Acheron, over which Charon ferries the souls of the dead into Hell. They also see the three-headed Cerberus, and Geryon, a flying serpent with the face of a man. They see the Devil eating human beings whole, harpies eating the corpses of suicides, an evil man forced to carry his own severed head for eternity, people half buried in flaming lava, etc. There follows a series of encounters in which the two meet up with a number of formerly famous historical figures whose souls were denied by both Heaven and Hell, and they listen to some of their tales told in flashback. These characters include Homer, Horace, Ovid, Lucanus, Cleopatra, Dido, the Queen of Carthage, the traitor Caiphus, Count Ugalino, Peter of Vigna, Francesca Da Rimini and her lover Paulo, Brutus and Cassius, Mohammed and Helen of Troy. The main attraction of the film are the fantastic set designs depicting the horrors of Hell, with excessive violence and gore, designed to frighten the audience into becoming pious and God-fearing. "The world poured back and forth between their eyes once or twice." Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson is in my list of the Top 5 Books I'd Recommend to Absolutely Anyone. It's tragic, obsessive love. It's cruelty and confusion. It's brave and brilliant. And dear Geryon is the most lovable main character I've ever read. And the structure of this book - A NOVEL IN VERSE - perfection. GOD LOVES LOLA, Robyn p.s. so sorry for the horrible German pronunciations!

ALOUD @ Los Angeles Public Library

Fifteen years ago, in Autobiography of Red, Anne Carson, critically acclaimed poet, essayist, translator and classics professor, wrote about a boy named Geryon and his love affair with Herakles. In her newest work Red Doc>, Carson revisits these characters in later life, yet creates a dreamlike offshoot, abandoning her previous style and narrative threads while moving towards the perilous edge of living past the end of one’s myth.*Click here to see photos from the program!
