In this bonus episode, The Spark, we welcome back Gnome Taylor, senior creative at Grey London, for a lighter, more personal chat. After Monday's powerful conversation on resilience, Gnome returns to answer some of our signature questions—giving us a glimpse of the person behind the job title. From why kindness is the best lesson she's learned in her career, to the odd comfort she gets from even numbers, Gnome shares stories with humour and heart. We talk about the ideas she's proud of (even the ones that never made it), her unexpected Joe Pasquale impression, and why her sock drawer is so meticulously organised it includes a single, unwearable pair. Gnome also opens up about sleep struggles, audiobook obsessions, and what she'd like to see from future male role models. Her answer? Less bravado, more empathy. This is a warm, thoughtful episode that celebrates quirks, creativity, and the quiet power of simply being kind. This season is proudly sponsored by the School of Communication Arts.

This week, we chat with Gnome Taylor, senior creative at Grey London, about the resilience it takes to make it in the creative industries—especially when life starts out tough. Gnome shares her incredible journey from growing up in foster care to carving out a thriving career in advertising. With honesty and humour, she reflects on the chaos of her early years, the stereotypes she battled, and the pivotal moment that made her decide to change her life. From raising over £26,000 to attend the School of Communication Arts, to landing her dream job, it's a story of sheer determination and grit. The conversation also explores the power of kindness, the emotional rollercoaster of creative work, and the importance of opening up—particularly in an industry where vulnerability is still often seen as a weakness. Gnome talks openly about navigating rejection, overcoming imposter syndrome, and why she's passionate about supporting underrepresented voices in advertising. If you've ever felt like you didn't belong, or if you've had to fight harder than most to find your place, this episode will speak to you. It's a candid and uplifting reminder that our differences and our experiences are often our greatest strengths. This season is proudly sponsored by the School of Communication Arts.

So let's start there. In his early twenties, Andy cut his Sports Science degree short to become a Buddhist monk. For over 10 years, his meditation training took him across the world to Nepal, India, Burma, Thailand, Australia and Russia. Eventually, he was ordained at a Tibetan monastery in the Indian Himalayas. After completing his monastic commitment, Andy returned to the UK with the huge-yet-simple goal of teaching meditation and mindfulness to as many people as possible. To demystify the mystical, Andy set up a meditation consultancy and began working with politicians, athletes (that sports science background finally came in handy), and business leaders. That's when Andy met Rich Pierson, who needed help dealing with the stress of the advertising world. Before long, Andy and Rich were skill-swapping meditation for business advice. That's when Headspace was born.Bio:Caroline Pay is Chief Creative Officer at Headspace, where she directs the company's dynamic, award-winning creative team. She guides all creative activities and serves as a thought leader to ensure Headspace continues to grow its leadershipposition worldwide, including digital, experiential and traditional advertising, as well as all marketing campaigns and initiatives. In 2018, Pay was awarded one of Adweek's “Los Angeles Brand Stars.”Prior to joining Headspace, Pay was the Co-Chief Creative Officer at Grey London. She served on the senior management team of the 400-person advertising agency and was the creative lead on accounts including the LRS portfolio, the United Nations and London's Metropolitan Police. During her tenure, Pay was also named one of Ad Age's “Women to Watch Europe 2018” and was nominated as one of the “World's Most Creative Women” by The Drum. Before joining Grey, she was Deputy Executive Creative Director at BBH London, developing and leading a 120-person creative department with clients including Tesco, BBC and domestic violence nonprofit Refuge. She also helped shape the agency's new specialty practices, including BBH Live and Black Sheep Studios. In addition, Pay affected change in the advertising industry's diversity agenda with her key involvement in “The Great British Diversity Experiment,” “The 3% Conference,” “SheSays,” and “Cream,” among other platforms. Pay spent a total of four years at BBH, first as Creative Director, and later as Managing Partner and Head of Creative Development. During her time at BBH, where she first met Headspace CEO Rich Pierson, she also ran accounts for iconic brands such as Levi's, Baileys, and Google. After launching her career at KesselsKramer Amsterdam, Pay transitioned to ad agency Mother London, where she served a total of 10 years leading award-winning work for brands ranging from Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, and Boots to GREAT Britain, Amnesty International, and the creation of FRANK—the British government's drug helpline for young people, now in its 16th year. Gavin Grey: London police criticised over tactics at Sarah Evarard vigil

London's police department is under scrutiny for the way officers handled some participants at an unofficial vigil Saturday night for a London woman whose death led to murder charges against a fellow officer and spurred a national conversation about violence against women in the U.K.Hundreds of people disregarded a judge's ruling and police requests by gathering at Clapham Common in honour of Sarah Everard, 33, who last was seen alive near the south London park on March 3. Demonstrators said they wanted to draw attention to the fear and danger many women see as a daily part of British life.Everard disappeared while walking home from a friend's apartment at about 10:30 p.m. and was found dead a week later. The slaying sent shockwaves across the U.K. because a Metropolitan Police officer is charged with her kidnapping and murder.Video of Saturday's informal vigil turned rally showed officers from the same police force tussling with participants as they pushed their way through the crowd. At one point, several male officers grabbed hold of several women and pulled them away in handcuffs to screaming and shouting from onlookers, Britain's Press Association reported.London Mayor Sadiq Khan decried the police actions."The police have a responsibility to enforce Covid laws, but from images I've seen it's clear the response was at times neither appropriate nor proportionate," Khan said on Twitter.Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted that she had asked the Metropolitan Police for a full report on what happened. The gathering happened hours after London constable Wayne Couzens, 48, appeared in court for the first time since his arrest in Everard's death. As Metropolitan Police officers approached the Clapham Common bandstand on Saturday evening, boos, jeers and shouts of "Shame on you" came from the crowd, according to the Press Association.Organizers had hoped to hold "Reclaim the Streets" vigils in Everard's memory at the south London location and in other U.K. cities on Saturday but cancelled the in-person events after a judge refused to grant an order allowing them to go on despite coronavirus restrictions that bar mass gatherings.Hundreds of people showed up nonetheless. Before police moved in, many participants laid flowers at the park bandstand. Among them was Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, who was seen pausing for a moment in front of the sea of flowers.Other people held signs reading "We will not be silenced" and "She was just walking home," and the crowd chanted, "Sisters united will never be defeated."In the wake of Everard's disappearance and killing, many women have taken to social media to share their own experiences of being threatened or attacked while walking outside.A 33-year-old nurse who works in the Clapham area, Mel Clarke, said she felt "very conflicted" about attending Saturday's gathering because of pandemic restrictions, but in the end "just felt that I needed to be here.""I'm really pleased that there are a lot of men here. I hope that this is kind of an opportunity for men to learn how women feel, how vulnerable we are," Clarke said. "I hope that this is the start of justice being served for Sarah."The Metropolitan Police has expressed shock and horror that one of its own was a suspect in the case. The London police force said Couzens joined its ranks in 2018 and most recently served in the parliamentary and diplomatic protection command, an armed unit responsible for guarding embassies in the capital and Parliament.During his court appearance earlier in the day, Couzens stood wearing a gray tracksuit as the charges were read to him. He was remanded into custody and has another appearance scheduled Tuesday at London's Central Criminal Court.Everard's body was found hidden in an area of woodland in Kent, more than 50 miles southeast of London, on Wednesday, a week after she went missing. A post-mortem examination is underway, police said Friday.TV and radio presenter Sandi Toksvig said a...

Gavin Grey: London Bridge stabbing dominates UK election

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2019 2:23

Britain's political leaders sparred Sunday over who is responsible for the early release of a convicted extremist who launched a stabbing attack in central London that left two dead and injured three. After a one-day pause out of respect for victims, Friday's attack is dominating the political scene as the Dec. 12 election nears, shifting the focus, at least for the moment, from Brexit and the National Health Service to issues of security and criminal justice. The argument centers over the early release from prison of Usman Khan, who served roughly half his sentence before being set free. He was able to stab five people before being shot dead by police despite conditions imposed on his release that were supposed to protect public safety.Prime Minister Boris Johnson, portraying himself as tough on crime, on Sunday blamed Khan's freedom on changes in sentencing rules made by the last Labour Party government before Johnson's Conservatives took power in 2010. He promised to toughen sentencing laws."I think it is repulsive that individuals as dangerous as this man should be allowed out after serving only eight years and that's why we are going to change the law," he told BBC's Andrew Marr Show.Marr repeatedly challenged the prime minister by pointing out that the Conservatives had been in power for nearly a decade and not taken any steps to change the situation Johnson was complaining about. The accuracy of Johnson's claim was challenged by Ed Davey, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, who told Sky News that the prime minister was misleading the public about the current law regarding the early release of prisoners."Either he's incompetent and doesn't know the law, or he's deliberately misleading people when we've got a tragedy on our hands, and I'm afraid, either way, it does not look good for the prime minister," Davey said.He said Johnson has a track record of misleading the public on this and other matters, including Brexit: "I'm really alarmed that we are on the brink of having a prime minister who is the most untruthful prime minister of all time."Regardless of who is to blame, it is clear that setting Khan free before his sentence was concluded put the public at risk at a time when the official terrorism threat level had recently been lowered because of a perceived reduction in the risk of jihadis returning from Syria to Britain to launch attacks. The Ministry of Justice has begun an urgent review of cases like Khan's that might pose a threat, including a review of the conditions governing the movements of every convicted terrorist who has been released from prison.Officials say about 74 people fit this category. Conditions typically including the wearing of an electronic device that allows police to track a person's movements, a curfew, limitations on internet use and smartphone use, and reporting on a regular basis to police.Police have said that Khan appears to have been in compliance with the conditions governing his release, which weren't made public, but nonetheless was able to carry out a deadly assault that didn't rely on sophisticated weaponry or detonation of an explosive device.Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn accused the Conservatives of trying to provide security "on the cheap" and said he doesn't necessarily agree that all terrorist prisoners should be required to serve their full terms. He said it depends on the circumstances and called for the Parole Board and the probation service to be more actively involved.Johnson's Conservatives quickly tried to capitalize on Corbyn's statement in a clear indication that the extremist attack is now fair game for political brinksmanship. The party tweeted a promise — "We will change the law so terrorists serve every single day of their sentence" — along with a warning about Corbyn's opposition to this plan."Who do you trust to keep you safe?" it asks.

Matt Tanter is the Chief Strategy Officer at Grey London and the Chair of the Account Planning Group (APG). As far as planning credentials go, CSO + Grey + London + Chair of APG = legit. He's a leader who's interested in culture over process and I thought I'd talk to him about this focus to help companies trying to bring in planning understand that you can't just drop in a planner and have planning. Planning happens within an operating system - a city, an agency type, an agency, the philosophy of the agency, the processes of the agency, and the attitudes of managers. We discuss: - Establishing a good culture of planning - The pressures on planners right now - Managing up - Mental health in planning' - The APG and its creative planning awards Shoutouts to all the lone planners or people trying to establish planning where it has never existed.
