The guys take a deep dive into "The Master Planner Saga" (issues # 's 31, 32 & 33), and with the events that culminate in issue #33, a diving suit might be a good piece of equipment to have on hand for our hapless hero.   These are the seminal issues that introduce Peter Parker's firstdays in college at ESU, Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborne. Also we met the mysterious Master Planner who is purloining any and all things of atomic nature. Aunt May is in the hospital--again. Peter and Betty are about to split up. And Spider-man goes through a gauntlet of goons that leaves him badly battered and bruised! It's three issues of massive mayhem as Spidey races the clock to save his dying aunt from a disease he inflicted upon her. Yeah, the old Parker luck knows no boundaries.    As James so aptly points out at the start of this podcast--"There's a ton of soap opera in these books!" Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, at this point in the series, knew what their fans wanted, and they were not shy in delivering the goods.  All the madness comes to one of the most classic conclusions early in issue #33 when Spider-Man performs one of his most iconic feats that still resonates with Spidey fans to this day! But even at that point, the story is not yet concluded as even more goons stand in Peter's way. And what do you think happens? POW! BAM! WHACK! Spideytriumphs! But with victory also comes defeat. This is classic Amazing Spider-Man. It's exciting, colorful, emotional and more fun than a barrel of arachnids! YECH!!!   Oh, who is The Master Planner? I ain't telling. He's a really scary dude!

The nine-episode season picks up from the Season 1 finale with the X-Men scattered across time from ancient Egypt to the far future, while those left behind in the '90s work to bring them back, with the trailer also sneaking in a Morph-as-Deadpool shapeshifting moment for good measure. David Armstrong interviewed Golden and Silver Age great, John Broome in 1998 on set at San Diego Comic Con about his entry into comic books and pulps in the 1930s, working at Quality Comics and DC Comics, knowing Otto Binder, his favorite comic book genre, his science fiction stories synergizing with the space race,  trying to gather support for creators to claim reprint rights from Jack Liebowitz, his stories of the 1950s, if comic books were a gateway to larger narrative projects, his enjoyment of films, writing a movie about Casanova, why he left comic books, and his dearest friend, Julius Schwartz. Armstrong also interviewed Pulp & Graphic Novel writer and Silver Age great, Arnold Drake in 2005 on set at San Diego Comic Con about his early forays into writing in the army during the Battle of the Bulge, submitting stories to the vintage paperback market, meeting Leslie Waller with whom he wrote what some consider the first graphic novel, It Rhymes With Lust, entering DC Comics through his friendship with Bob Kane, his opinion of Mort Weisinger, writing Showcase #1, revitalizing Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis licensed comics at DC,  discussing the threat of Stan Lee's Marvel Age with Irwin Donenfeld, creating Doom Patrol, interacting with Dick Giordano, Carmine Infantino and his favorite artist, Bruno Premiani. Interview conducted, recorded and copyrighted to David Armstrong. Remastered, edited, timestamped and postproduction by Alex Grand.Support the show

Ron White is a two-time USA Memory Champion, U.S. Navy veteran, and one of the world's foremost memory training experts. Known as the "Brain Athlete," he has dedicated his career to proving that extraordinary memory is not a gift — it's a trainable skill. In 2020, playwrights Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente joined me to talk about transforming their acclaimed stage play King Kirby into an ambitious audio drama. The original play explored the life, imagination, and complicated legacy of comics legend Jack Kirby — from the birth of the Marvel Universe to the battles over credit, ownership, and artistic identity that followed him throughout his career.In this conversation, Crystal and Fred discuss the challenge of adapting such a visually explosive story into a purely audio experience.
