Episode Description:A good outcome does not necessarily mean you made a good decision.And a bad outcome does not necessarily mean you made a bad one.That distinction is at the heart of James's conversation with Annie Duke, former professional poker player and author of Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts.Poker gave Annie an unusually intense laboratory for studying uncertainty. You can make exactly the right decision and lose money. You can make a terrible decision and win. If you judge yourself only by the result, you may reinforce bad habits, discard good strategies, and learn the wrong lesson entirely.James connects this immediately to business, investing, comedy, relationships, and his own experience selling a company during the dot-com boom. When things work out, people naturally want to take credit. When things go badly, they naturally want to blame luck.Both reactions interfere with learning.Annie argues that one of the most valuable skills is learning to separate what you controlled from what you did not. Instead of asking only, “Did I win?” ask whether the process that produced the result was sound.The conversation then becomes an exploration of how to learn faster.Annie says one of the best shortcuts is to “borrow other people's 10,000 hours.” When she entered professional poker, her brother had already spent years around players like Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington. Instead of rediscovering everything through expensive trial and error, Annie entered a community that had already spent thousands of hours thinking about the game.But being around experts is not enough.You have to know how to talk to them. You have to communicate the relevant details. You have to remove the outcome when asking for advice so it does not bias the conversation. And you have to find people willing to challenge you instead of simply confirming what you already believe.Annie describes three essential commitments for a strong decision-making group: a commitment to accuracy, accountability for your beliefs, and openness to dissent.James and Annie also explore the role of teaching. Annie says her own poker game changed dramatically once she had to explain her strategies to students. If you cannot clearly explain why you believe something, you may not understand it nearly as well as you think.The second half of the episode turns toward practical decision-making.Annie explains mental time travel: instead of allowing the emotion of the present moment to dominate a decision, imagine how your future self will view it. A $100 gambling win can feel terrible if you were previously up $2,000, while a $100 loss can feel great if you were previously down $2,000. George Carlin had a comedy career that spanned half a century, and his take on the US remains relevant more than a decade after his death in 2008. The HBO documentary George Carlin's American Dream tells Carlin's story as he evolved from a clean-cut comic in the 1950s into the edgy critic who remains one of the most influential comedians of all time. John shares his memories of the morning of 9/11, traveling from Brooklyn to Ground Zero, learning that members of his firehouse were missing, and spending hours searching the pile. He remembers the eight firefighters from his company who were killed and discusses the long-term health effects and personal losses that followed. John also talks about his friendship with Scott Davidson and his unique experience working with Pete Davidson and Judd Apatow on The King of Staten Island, where he played Captain Palazzo and served as a consultant to ensure the firefighting scenes were authentic. It's a powerful conversation about 9/11, brotherhood, friendship, healing, and bringing the stories of the fallen to future generations.

I recently sat down with Emmy-winning comedy writer Brent Forrester, whose credits include The Simpsons, The Office, King of the Hill, Judd Apatow's Love AND Mr. Show with Bob and David. We discussed his path from a television-free childhood reading Mad magazine to breaking into the industry under the mentorship of The Golden Girls creator Susan Harris. Brent shared how he taught himself the mechanics of television writing by breaking down the exact structures of sketches and scripts that made him laugh. We also talked about the realities of navigating a career in the entertainment industry and how building a small team or writing group can help writers manage the uncertainty of freelance work. Brent is currently bypassing the traditional network development system to focus on self-produced, independent material. He recently launched a YouTube channel under his teaching nickname, Professor BFo, where he premiered his self-funded, micro-budget workplace comedy series, Historic Freedomburg. Mel Brooks is about to turn 100 years old! When Mel celebrates his upcoming birthday on June 28th, filmmaker Michael Bonfiglio, who has directed (along with Judd Apatow) a joyful and action-packed two-part HBO documentary about the legendary comic and filmmaker, might want to talk to the folks at HBO about changing the title of their film: “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” Otherwise, I'd advise not changing a thing.   Joining Ken on the pod, Michael talks about how Judd's comedic bona vides probably made the difference in convincing Mel to participate in the film. Michael, who previously teamed up with Judd to direct the Emmy-winning documentary “George Carlin's American Dream” (check out Michael Merrill's “Top Docs” season 2 interview with Michael), compares the two comedians and projects. She has spoken and presented at galleries, art institutions, and festivals around the world—offering Master Classes at the Visegrad Film Festival in Bratislava and, most recently, at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, where she also served as a juror and presented the Best Actor and Best Production Designer Awards. Throughout her career, Debra has been driven by imagination, collaboration, and deep respect for the creative process.
