On 9th February 1981 a novel was published that would reinigerate historical fiction, begin a series that would sell millions of copies, and inspire a certain Sheffield born actor to take on a role that would lead him to Hollywood as a Bond villain and the star of Lord of the Rings. Sharpe's Eagle was that novel, and Sean Bean the actor. There is a new Sharpe out, Sharpe's Storm, set in late 1813 during the British invasion of southwest France. Today I have the great pleasure of speaking with Bernard Cornwell in a wide-ranging chat which starts off with my mention of his publisher, Susan Watt who very sadly died recently. The government is no longer soley focued on attracting Blockbuster films like the Lord of the Rings and Avatar to these shores, it's now hoping to give the industry a boost by offering incentives to smaller productions, too. Finance Minister Nicola Willis announced today it's expanding eligibility for the International Screen Production Rebate scheme to allow smaller budget productions and digital effects only projects to benefit from the rebate. One actor says the changes couldn't comes soon enough. Kim Baker Wilson reports.

Tolkien and Edith Bratt. Tolkien and Edith's love story began as star-crossed lovers, and their separation inspired Tolkien to write the story of Beren and Lúthien (and later Aragorn and Arwen). After years apart, they reunited, and endured Tolkien's enlistment in World War I, which he miraculously survived.  Throughout their marriage, Tolkien scribbled away at his ‘fairy languages' and Middle Earth tales in any free time he found. But who was Edith Tolkien? The world knows little about her, and she makes few appearances in biographies about him. But surely that doesn't mean Tolkien cared more for elves and hanging with C.S.
