If life were a house, then every room holds a story. What do we do when a room we're in is no longer a room where we belong? What do you do when you start to feel a shift and must decide if it's time to make a change? When it comes to navigating big decisions about when to stay and go, how can we know for sure when the time is right? Though we enter and exit many rooms over the course of our life—jobs, relationships, communities, life stages—knowing how and when it's time to leave is a decision that rarely has a clear answer. My guest today, Emily P. Freeman, offers guidance to help us recognize when it's time to move on from situations that no longer fit, allowing us to find new spaces where we can flourish and grow. Emily P. We are driven by our values. Sometimes however, our values change, or we find ourselves in a place where it's hard to live out our values. So we think about change. Which requires decisions. And boom. A crossroads. The comfort and security of where we are and what is known, and the fear of the unknown. It's a big deal. However, I've got really hopeful news for you. A resource if you will. How would you like a manual for how to make it as easy and secure as possible? Emily P. Freeman is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of five books, including The Next Right Thing: A Simple Soulful Practice for Making Life Decisions. This book became so popular that Emily now has a nationally ranked podcast of the same name, The Next Right Thing, which already has more than 24 million downloads. Emily regularly offers perspective and clarity for more than 120K followers on Instagram. After doing the research to masterfully address decision making, Emily has turned her focus to making change. Her new book is How to Walk into a Room: The Art of Knowing When to Stay and When to Walk Away. We went really, really deep into the real and perceived risks of change. Then we spent nearly half our time together walking through 10 questions Emily has masterfully outlined to help us discern if a change is truly wise and fitting. We even hit on personality styles and talk about those who change is easier for, but that those who struggle more with change often actually do it more successfully. As you'll hear, I'm the former, for the record. I've never experienced a more clear and concise plan for taking so much of the fear and risk out of big decisions and changes and I won't address it again the same way. So next up, Emily P Freeman and a deep discussion to help us all with big decision and change to help equip us to drive more authentically and efficiently through the ups, downs, lefts and rights of life. I don't know about you, but I've never taken a class on decision-making. My parents never sat me down and taught me how to think deeply about the consequences of my actions. When it comes to making life choices, the only teacher I've ever had was life itself. I've made decisions, those decisions have had consequences, and then I've analyzed those consequences with the hopes that I'll be able to make even better decisions in the future. But I'm a human being… and naturally, I want to feel a sense of certainty that the decisions I make will lead to the outcomes I desire. — And I'm sure you're no different. How do I know if I'm making the right decision? How do I know if I should be persistent and keep moving toward my goal, or just quit and find something else to do?How do I know if I'm using my time in the best way possible? These are questions that all of us have asked or will ask ourselves at some point in life. And the harsh reality is that in most cases, the only person who can answer these question for us is the person we see in the mirror every morning. But still, we continue to look to others for guidance, advice, and answers. — And in today's episode, I'm gonna play a clip of a young lady looking for advice on how to know if she's on the right path in life. — And the entrepreneur and content creator, Gary Vaynerchuk is going to share a perspective that I believe could help you to find some direction in your life as well. For access to bonus podcast episodes and our private conversation group on Discord, subscribe on Patreon!

In this episode, Elena interviews Alycia James, a coach and healer who focuses on emotional freedom, intuitive development, and self-liberation. Check out Elena's website to learn more about how she can support you in seeing and using the power that resides within you. What does celebrating Women's History Month - and beyond - look like?  Elena has thought a lot about how it would look to not only celebrate this month every year but live this month intentionally throughout the year.  After a particularly draining workshop, a loving voice message from Aaron reminded Elena that women can't leave men behind in the fight for equality.  Her advice and Weekly Coaching Tip are to surround yourself with allies – people who can see you and hear you (even if they don't understand you), and honor what you're up to in the world.  Think about who makes up your collective sisterhood, and if you are not intentionally looking to create sisterhood with other women, where could you find them, and gather them for support? In her interview segment, Elena talks with Alycia James, whom she first met online to create a coaching show.  Alycia's physical beauty, inner soul and kind heart concealed a very different inner feeling…that of hating being a woman.  Alycia experienced internalized misogyny for much of her life, and believed being born a woman was a hinderance.  As she began to explore coaching and mindset work with Elena, she realized nobody knows her better than herself, and gained confidence in standing up for her own opinion, even if it meant challenging a man's authority.  Cultivating relationships with men who allow her to be her authentic self empowered her and made her more present.   The conversation then turns to intuition and the tremendous power it has in our lives.  It's easily accessible to both men and women - men follow their gut instinct while women need to lean into their femininity.  Alycia explains that for women, fear is often mistaken for intuition.  They must be clearly distinguished, and learning to act on one or dismiss the other is crucial.  For Alycia, it's very clear which is which, because intuition comes with a sense of peace and a feeling of acceptance.  Always follow peace.  As a tip to the listeners to tap into their intuition more, she asks the simple question “If there was no right or wrong, what would you do?”, and the answer will usually come.   If you're interested in realizing your inner voice/intuition in a more profound way, you'll enjoy this episode! My friends, there is power in the stillness. It is in the quiet – in the peace – that we can most accurately reflect the glory of our God. If you feel your soul is a jumbled, turbulent mess I beg you, make the time to be still. Still waters reflect perfectly the image of the sun. Raging waters reflect nothing. When my soul is still and at peace I can beautifully reflect the image of the Son to the world around me, but when my soul within me is turbulent and tossing there's no reflection at all. It's merely a churning mess. How many times have you made a decision.  And then made it again? And then made it again?  Second guessing our decisions is one of the biggest time wasters.  In episode 50 of Just One Simple Thing, you'll learn three ways to close the door on your decisions so you can keep moving forward. You've probably heard that we make some huge number of decisions every day.   I don't even want to Google the exact number.  I think it would scare me. But I WOULD like to know how many decisions we make for the second or third time because we second guess ourselves.  No sooner have we made a decision than the doubt sets in.  So these are the three things that will help you stop wasting your time revisting your decisions over and over: 1.  Get clear on your values and priorities and use them as a filter for your decisions.  2. Do your research.  3. Talk it over with a friend, mentor, or coach. And finally of course, wrap all of this up in prayer. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”ACTION STEP:I want to focus in on that first item again.  Write your values, purpose and focus areas for this season on a sheet of paper and hang it where you can see it.  I truly believe this is the foundation for making decisions that stick.  Snap a picture of it and post it on social media with the hashtag #justonesimplething so I can cheer you on!RESOURCES:The most downloaded episode so far is Episode 4:  The 5 P's of Decision Making.  Check it out for more decision-making support.Need help hashing out a decision?  Click here to schedule a free 20-minute call with me!Book Recommendation: The Next Right Thing: A Simple, Soulful Practice for Making Life Decisions by Emily P. The temptation to compare ourselves isn't actually new. It's just easier, and the sources have changed. But for thousands of years the Proverbs 31 woman has stood as the pinnacle of womanly success. She has been placed on a pedestal. She has been praised, and she has been hated. Some people say she is modeled from Ruth. Other people say she is a completely made up a woman. All of that aside, I want us to really take stock of this beautiful lady. And in doing so, I want us to be encouraged and inspired, rather than threatened and defeated. In this episode we take a closer look at the Proverbs 31 woman and the secrets to her success that you may have missed before! Welcome to Episode 4 of Just One Simple Thing! In this episode, we'll continue our discussion about decision-making with five verses you can pray and five questions you can ask as a filter to help you make decisions. You'll also learn what to do when a decision gets stuck in the middle of your filter. You ready? Let's get to it!Key Points:Here are five practical things we can pray through when deciding what to do next in our ministries or businesses.Ask these questions: 1.Is it consistent with your purpose?  2. Does it fit in with other pieces of your ministry or business?3. Does it reflect a God-honoring Presence?4. How does it affect your people?5.Are you in the right position?Clarity comes from action. By taking the first few simple steps towards that decision, you'll bring closure to the decision faster than if you just sit and ponder. There is a place where micro steps towards what seems like a good idea can give us clarity and confidence to either move ahead or step back.Action Step:Download the Decision Making Filter, print it out,  fill it in, and keep it handy for your next big decision. Then snap a picture and share it on social media using the hashtag #justonesimplething. Resources:If you are having a hard time making a decision that sticks, it might help to talk it out with someone. You can use this link for a free Define call and we can filter through it together. He is a queer male in a quad. Seven years ago, he and his partner T moved to be in the same city as W and E. They had talked off and on about cohabitation, and recently W and E decided to get a bigger house that would accommodate the four of them. W and E decided on budget and location and showed their final choice to our letter writer and his partner, which left him feeling excluded from the decision-making process. Later on, he asked about some jokes W and E were making, and it turns out they were considering adopting a teenager, which until recently would have been a deal-breaker for him. He shut down and curled into a ball. He wants to confront them, but he fears losing the relationship. It’s helpful not to think of this as a confrontation but instead a transparency session where everyone gets to say what they think and feel in a safe space. Focus on behaviors, not on assumptions about what those behaviors might mean. When you were bothered by your perception that W and E thought that the final home tour would be sufficient, own that you are talking about perceptions instead of actual communication. Own your own sh*t and ask for what you want. You never indicated that you actually told them how and when or even that you wanted to be involved in the home-buying process—it’s your job to ask for that participation in so many words. Assume goodwill all around. If you haven’t specified what you want, it’s best to assume others’ intentions are good. This is a great time to begin the habit of full disclosure. Communicate early and often. State expectations expressly instead of keeping them to yourself. 16:30 Happy Poly Moment Alan writes in about trying poly because his wife wanted to date an old college boyfriend. He found a special friend at a poly event and they spent a lovely weekend together during which he got to meet his metamours and had a fun poly family experience. 18:30 Thank you!
