Co-founder of Rocket Learning, Namya Mahajan, joins us to share an extraordinary journey and remarkable work. Rocket Learning is a non-profit organization on a mission to revolutionise early childhood education (ECE) and early childhood development (ECD) in India by working closely with governments, parents and caregivers to create strong digital content that helps children develop during their early years. In this episode, we explore Rocket Learning's remarkable journey, from their idea to the impact they have today. Namya Mahajan's personal and professional journey is compelling: growing up in India, gaining both an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and an MBA from Harvard University, followed by a return to India to work at McKinsey & Co and then venturing into the social impact space, first at the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and then co-founding Rocket Learning. With a mission to help children aged 3 to 8 years, Rocket Learning creates strong digital content for parents and caregivers to engage in useful and playful learning experiences with their children.  Leveraging WhatsApp as their communication platform, they currently serve one million children in seven states in India, but despite this they still sometimes refer to themselves as a "pilot at scale" due to the immense need for their services in the country.  In this episode, we explore their successful market entry, digital content creation, and scaling strategies, as well as their remarkable journey from idea to impact. They have successfully secured funding and support from a range of organizations, including the Central Square Foundation, ACT Grants, the Veddis Foundation, the Harvard University Impact Fellowship Fund, MIT Solve, World Economic Forum, Google.org, Microsoft, Amazon, and Capgemini, among others. Join us for an inspiring conversation on the power of digital solutions for early childhood education and development, with Rocket Learning. The Lesson:  Everyone can make an impact if they give 10%—effort, time, money, etc. to ensuring that across all dimensions of life they are making a positive impact rather than a negative one. Sometimes it takes a hard look in the mirror, but it's always worth it in the end. Notable Excerpt: "[Do] an audit of your life across all the different categories. So career and job is one of them, but also your money, volunteering, your side-hustles, your family or the institutions you're part of, look at all your life and first start rating it by how much time are you spending on these categories and then whether you're having a positive-neutral-negative effect." The Guest: Alex has spent over 15 years working in the social impact space for one of the largest children's nonprofits. Save the Children and the Clinton Foundation. She now leads MIT SOLVE. As a founding Executive Director of Solve. Alex has built and now oversees a fast-growing team whose mission is to drive innovation, to solve global challenges. How do they do that? Lifelong learning is an essential element of a satisfying retirement. And lifelong learning is an increasingly vital part of a successful career, including a second career. Our special guest, Dr. Michelle Weise, explains how longer lifespans are changing the nature of careers and education, and why lifelong learning is important for individuals and employers. _________________________ Bio Dr. Michelle R. Weise is the author of Long-Life Learning: Preparing for Jobs that Don’t Even Exist Yet. Thinkers50 named her one of 30 management and leadership thinkers in the world to watch in 2021. She is a senior advisor at Imaginable Futures, a venture of The Omidyar Group. Dr. Weise's work over the last decade has concentrated on preparing working-age adults for the jobs of today and tomorrow. She was the chief innovation officer of Strada Education Network as well as Southern New Hampshire University. With Clayton Christensen, she coauthored Hire Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution (2014) while leading the higher education practice at Christensen’s Institute for Disruptive Innovation. Dr. Weise also advises BrightHive, a data collaboration platform, the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), the SkillUp Coalition, Strategic Education Inc.’s HIRE board, MIT SOLVE, Village Capital, Western Governors University Teachers College, Clayton Christensen Institute Social Capital R&D Project, and World Education’s Personal and Workplace Success Skills Library. She has also served as a commissioner for Massachusetts Governor Baker’s Commission on Digital Innovation and Lifelong Learning, Harvard University’s Task Force on Skills and Employability, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education. Her commentaries on redesigning higher education and developing more innovative workforce and talent pipeline strategies have been featured in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Harvard Business Review and on PBS Newshour. Michelle is a former Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Harvard and Stanford. __________________________ Wise Quotes On Longevity "...basically since the 1840s, every year we've added on an average of three months to our lifespans. And there's no sign that that's actually stopping or lessening over time. I think we do have an interesting phenomenon here with the pandemic that is kind of shaping our mortality rates, obviously in this century, in this year, in this decade. But for the most part, we know that our lifespans have been extending. And then there are different kinds of futurists and experts on aging and longevity who are proposing that the first people to live to be a hundred and years old have already been born. So if we just take this concept of a hundred-year life or 150 year work-life, even if we don't maybe fully buy into it, or want to buy into it because we don't want to live 150 years, that's still a very helpful mental model for us to think about how do we actually thrive in this future, where we are already seeing that a lot of working-age adults are staying in the workforce for far longer than they had ever anticipated well into their sixties and seventies.   On Preparing for an Extended Worklife "We see that early baby boomers are experiencing 12 job changes on average by the time they retire. So even if we just extend a little bit in terms of thinking about an extended work-life, whether it's 60, 80, or a hundred years, it's not actually that difficult for us to extrapolate and think, 'Oh, we could possibly face maybe 20 or 30 job changes by the time we retire' - and how in the world are we going to do that when navigating one [job change] is so difficult. And so the way that I think about a way to visualize this idea of long-life learning is really the future of work and the future of education are going to become inextricably tied.

Century is the global leader in AI-powered learning tools for schools and families, working in dozens of countries across the world. She is also the author of a book called INADEQUATE: THE SYSTEM FAILING OUR TEACHERS AND YOUR CHILDREN, recently published by John Catt. Reviewing the book, Sir Anthony Seldon wrote: “Priya Lakhani is a visionary thinker. Yesterday, her words seemed speculative. Today, they are coming into being. Tomorrow, educators, parents and politicians will be left behind if they haven't listened to her.” In 2008, Priya left her job as a barrister to set up a philanthropic cooking sauce company. Through its charitable foundation, Masala Masala provided millions of meals and thousands of vaccinations to the underprivileged in India and Africa, and funded several schools. A few years later, Priya pivoted again, this time setting up Century Tech. In 2018, Century won the prestigious MIT SOLVE award for Education, and in 2019 Priya was named Economic Innovator of the year by The Spectator. Priya embodies many of the autodidactic dispositions that we want all young people to leave school with: she is a gifted communicator with a strong moral purpose, somebody who doesn't take no for an answer and who is able to retrain and gain mastery of new knowledge and skills in a short space of time, under her own steam. This is a fascinating conversation in which we explore why we need to embrace learning to learn; the importance of fighting for education, and not taking no for an answer; and the transformative potential of AI in education. Every year, more than 4 million people die from direct and indirect exposure to air pollution. Think about that for a second. The very thing that keeps us alive is also the one that’s killing us. Even with problems that seem unsolveable, there are incredible people working day and night to find solutions — like Anirudh Sharma, cofounder and president of Graviky Labs and the chronic inventor behind AIR-INK. Before AIR-INK, Anirudh built Lechal, a vibrating shoe that aimed to help the visually-impaired navigate their worlds better. With Anirudh’s passion to use technology as a tool for good, AIR-INK, the first ink made entirely out of air pollution, was created. At Graviky Labs where AIR-INK is processed, air pollution is recycled and turned into hydrated, industrial-grade pigments and inks. Graviky Labs’ technology can be used to capture carbon pollution from the exhaust of generators and small chimney stacks. With AIR-INK, pollutants which could have been in the lungs of millions of people, or mixed into our water and land streams are now beautifully resting on murals and paintings. In the 2019 MIT Solve Challenge, AIR-INK was selected as one of 32 Solver teams out of 1400 applicants from over 100 countries. As humans, we have personal motivations to succeed, to make ourselves better. But when the going gets tough and we’re bombarded with challenges, don’t we sometimes feel like quitting? What if our goal was to impact another person’s life, not just ours? And we stuck to that image of that one person, maybe a handful or even thousands of people we can potentially help. Would we be so quick to give up? In the case of June Sugiyama, Director at Vodafone Americas Foundation, flipping the script and refocusing the lens was a daily practice. Stephanie Benedetto is a former corporate lawyer who found her path to change the world. Prior to starting Queen of Raw, Stephanie worked as a lawyer in the fashion, media/entertainment, start-up, and technology industries and co-founded a sustainable textile manufacturing facility. While spending a lot of time in factories and warehouses, she saw perfectly good fabric collecting dust. These would eventually be burned or sent to the landfill. There was no alternative. This was when Stephanie realized that there was a supply demand mismatch — and she wanted to do something about it. Today, Stephanie is the CEO and Founder of Queen of Raw, a marketplace to buy and sell unused textiles. The company keeps these materials out of landfills and turns pollution into profit. “Don't doubt that you can make a difference and you can solve problems and absolutely go change the world,” says Stephanie. How do you solve the most complex challenges that exist in our world — preventing chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer, ensuring access to quality education for refugees and displaced people and combating climate change, to name a few. For decades, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has taken on missions that seem beyond the bounds of possibility. In the 1960s, the MIT Instrumentation Lab developed the navigation system of the Apollo spacecraft — which safely landed astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon, and returned them to Earth. Today, MIT is still taking these challenges head on. Through its initiative MIT Solve, people from all over the world pitch their solutions to massive global problems. They discuss Solve's 2018 “Coastal Communities” challenge, which looks at ways to address the issues coastal communities are facing due to climate change and rising sea levels. Is there a way to harness these issues, and transform them into a solution? Dr. Dale and the team discuss the innovators of the future, and how they are tackling these challenges.
