Horticulture Week Podcast
How horticulture can weather the future with Stuart Priest of Batsford Arboretum

Horticulture Week Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2025 25:53

Director of operations at The Batsford Foundation Stuart Priest has led a rich life in horticulture, starting with an apprenticeship with Blakedown Nurseries followed by a National Diploma in Hardy Nursery Stock at Pershore College. He joined Batsford Arboretum in 1986 after an opportunity came up to open a nursery at the Cotswolds attraction. After developing a successful hardy fern production line, he decided to pivot away from the stresses of growing plants towards garden retail, installed a garden centre within the nursery site and built a garden visitors centre. Two years ago Batsford added a restaurant. The arboretum houses collections of birch, maple, oak, ash, lime, magnolia, mountain ash, pine, fir, spruce and many other rare trees.Priest discusses the origins of the arboretum through to current challenges including dealing with extreme weather events as well as strategies to attract visitors throughout the year.A series of droughts prompted a decision to build a three million litre lake, which has also become an "absolute magnet" for wildlife. He says extreme weather events have become more common but his reaction to losses is now more philosophical - as there are also gains. In high winds "some of the veteran trees are dropping boughs, going over and it used to be really upsetting...now we've just assured ourselves that one big tree goes, it opens up a massive planting place."We're able to grow a vast amount of plants, different sorts of species now that 20-odd years ago we wouldn't dreamt of trying". Batsford has invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in an extensive solar panel network in which generated £10,000 "in a dull year" to help offset Batsford's £60,000 electric bill. And he hopes to generate more when further solar panels set to adorn a new workshop facility and tractor shed are added to the network.A passionate horticulturist, Priest ends the podcast with a heartfelt plea: "The comradeship is brilliant in horticulture and we've got to encourage the youngsters to come into it." The world of professional specialty coffee can be both inspiring and intimidating with many customers and new baristas feeling lost in the mix of rules, methods, and information. How can we create a great experience for guests and staff who all really want to enjoy coffee and find their place in it? Today we get to learn from the story of someone whose career in coffee took him from curious customer, to barista champion, and finally to teacher and business owner, all along the way finding his identity in coffee firmly rooted in providing the kind of hospitality that won him over at the start. Winston Thomas is 33 years old and grew up in the small suburb of Strand in Cape Town. He studied Civil Engineering at CPUT but developed an interest in coffee after reading a letter in his local newspaper of a woman complaining that there was no good coffee in Strand/Somerset West. This sparked his interest in coffee and during his studies he completed a barista course. This changed his whole perspective on coffee and after completing his National Diploma in 2014 decided to work in coffee full time. Since then he has managed to win the South African Aeropress Championship in 2016, the Western Cape Barista Championship for 2017, 2018 & 2020, the South African Barista Championship in 2017, 2018 & 2020 title as well as the Africa Barista Championship title for 2019. He now owns and runs a coffee training and consulting business called Winston Douglas Coffee and a Coffee Roastery Called Cedar Coffee Roasters.   In this episodes you will learn about: Winston's entry into coffee and how his engineering mind helped him discover higher levels Curiosity and a desire to understand how things work are valuable traits in the coffee industry. Barista competitions can provide opportunities for growth and learning, but it's important to maintain a sense of humility and not let success cloud one's perspective. Hospitality as a fundamental aspect of coffee service Why baristas should strive to create meaningful experiences for customers. Building confidence and finding one's identity in the industry  The blessing and burden of winning Avoid overemphasizing fame and titles in the industry How having control over the variables in coffee brewing enhances the hospitality experience. Creating an authentic coffee experience specific to a region or culture is a challenge worth pursuing. Hello and welcome to Roots and All, where my guest this week is urban apiculturist Mark Patterson. Mark founded and runs Apicultural where he work with businesses and communities to invest in natural capital, improving the environment for pollinators and delivering pollinator monitoring surveys for clients. He provides honey bee hive management solutions, beekeeping training and education and also supplies quality urban honey to a select group of establishments. So you'd think Mark would be all for the idea of urban honeybees, right? Listen on… Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Ear Wigglers What We Talk About  How many hives are there in London, does anybody have an estimate? Is it a sustainable number? Where are they foraging for floral resources? Are there enough of these? Are urban conditions more taxing for bees? Do environmental stressors lead to higher incidences of disease, for example?  Do managed bees outcompete wild bees when it comes to consuming pollen and nectar?  Are managed bees necessary? Useful? Desirable? Filling a niche left by potentially dwindling numbers of wild bees? A useful pollination and food source for humans?  Why are commercial beekeeping companies trying to muscle in on the beekeeping tradition in London? Do honeybees count as an ‘environmental credit' in terms of planning and building?  About Mark Patterson After completing a National Diploma in Agriculture, Land use and recreation which included a practical Horticultural course Mark went on to study for an Honours Degree in Countryside Management and Ornithology at Kingston Upon Hull University - an ecology based course of study. It was during this time at University that Mark was introduced to bee keeping by a fellow student.  As senior Consultant Mark has amassed over 26 years of experience in the fields of nature conservation and ecology. His past professional positions include marine biologist/ranger on the Farne islands national nature reserve, Countryside Ranger for a local Authority, Nature reserve manager for Durham Wildlife services, Worked on a bird of prey Reintroduction program with the RSPB , Freelance consultancy and 11 years as a project and program manager for a national Environmental regeneration Charity, Groundwork. Having assisted others with their beekeeping for several years Mark began bee keeping on his own in 2010 having attended an introduction course and a seasons mentoring. Since then he has volunteered extensively for Bee keeping associations, serving as elected committee official and Trustee to the LBKA, taught courses and organised forage planting activities for the bee keeping community he serves. Mark spent 3 years working for DEFRA as a seasonal Bee Inspector and currently cares for around 30 colonies of honey bees,10 of which are his own. Mark currently posses the BBKA Bee basic certificate, BBKA Honey bee management certificate, several of the BBKA modular exam certificates and the General Husbandry certificate. Mark has extensive training and experience in notifiable bee diseases diagnosis and management.  As well as Honey Bees Mark is also highly knowledgeable about Solitary bees and Bumblebees and teaches Bee identification courses for the Field Studies Council as part of the nationwide BioLinks program. Dieudo Hamadi and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Downstream from Kinshasa, resilience over resistance, responsibility and reality, politics and the human condition and a desire for life and a better tomorrowTrailerSynopsis:Dieudo Hamadi returns with his latest portrait of his native Congo, honouring survivors of his country’s Six-Day War in 2000. Since making his feature documentary debut in 2013, Dieudo Hamadi has produced an unparalleled body of work that captures glimpses of contemporary Congolese life.In examining elections (Atalaku, 2013), schools (National Diploma, which played TIFF in 2014), violence against women and children (Mama Colonel, 2017), and political mobilization (Kinshasa Makambo, 2018), Hamadi has told individual stories that speak to collective experiences and histories. With Downstream to Kinshasa, Hamadi perfects this approach as he follows a group of victims of his country’s Six-Day War in 2000, who are seeking reparations from the government. In June 2000, Kisangani became a battleground. In this northeastern city on the Congo River, Rwandan and Ugandan forces clashed in a conflict that was part of the bloody Second Congo War. Though a devastating conflict — so much so that it’s sometimes called the African World War — 20 years later survivors are still fighting for compensation and recognition of the atrocities they endured in this siege. Here, Hamadi’s focus isn’t on past geopolitics but rather on the present and very personal: a group of Kisanganians who were maimed by the heavy shelling and gunfire. Through musical theatre, the victims have reclaimed their voices. But having never had official acknowledgement or financial compensation for their pain, they decide to journey down the Congo River to the capital in a bid to finally make their stories heard.(With thanks to TIFF)About Dieudo:Dieudo Hamadi was born in Kisangani (Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1984 and studied Medicine in 2005-2008. He then attended several documentary workshops. Dieudo is author of two short documentaries Ladies in Waiting and Zero Tolerance that caught the attention of several festivals in Europe and Toronto. Ladies in Waiting received the ''Pierre and Yolande Perrault'' scholarship at Cinema du Réel in 2009.In 2013, with Atalaku, his first feature documentary he won the Jory Ivens Award in the Festival du Réel in Paris, the best Foreign film Prize at the San Diego Film Festival and the Jury Prize in Fidadoc. In 2014,National Diploma received the International Prize of the SCAM and the Potemkine Prize at the Festival du Réel. The film is shown at the TIFF in Toronto and travels to 60 festivals around the world. In 2017, Mama Colonelle is presented at the Berlinale and wins two awards - Best Film, Tagesspiegel Prize, Forum Section. After that it wins the Grand Prix at Cinema du Réel in Paris. The movie keeps on traveling in many festivals and an award for best documentary - AMAA 2017.In 2015, Dieudo created Kiripifilms, his own production company. The operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested a 19-year-old National Diploma graduate of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos as the brain behind the attempted blackmail of Queen Salawa Abeni with her nude photographs. The suspect, Olufowoke Oladunjoye Emmanuel, a resident of Brentfield Avenue, Peace Estate, Magboro, Ogun State, was arrested by the ambushed squad of the Rapid Response Squad [R R S] last week Thursday, after three days of surveillance .The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, speaking on the arrest, stated that after the Salawa Queen made the issue of the blackmail public in April 2020, he directed the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, DCP Olatunji Disu to fish out the suspect. He said after a preliminary investigations, the Decoy Team narrowed down on the suspect a few days later but could not effect the arrest immediately due to COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown directive by the Federal Government.“The suspect has confessed to the Police that he is behind the attempt to blackmail the Musician with some of her nude pictures found on a sim card in exchange for money and that he was alone in the dubious scheme”, Odumosu said.He added that the suspect is a 2017/2018 Electrical Engineering student of Yabatech, who discovered the nude pictures in a memory card picked up on the ground at Yabatech in November 2019, adding that after downloading the nude photographs of Salawa Abeni to his phone, he contacted her through the mobile number on her Instagram page to ask for money. On his part, the RRS Commander, DCP Olatunji Disu, promised that no individual would be allowed to commit a crime in Lagos from any State or escape to other States in Nigeria to evade arrest. He advised guardians and parents to monitor their wards, saying that the internet is a fertile ground for opportunities but the State Command would not allow criminals to use it as an avenue to exploit law-abiding Lagos residents.

Mark Rogan (IRL) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 50 Pt. 4 Bio: When it comes to dance music, Belfast might not be the first destination most people would turn to for raw, uncompromising Techno of a global standard, however in recent years all that has changed. A troubled past and on-going rioting by minority groups has for a long time held the city, and country at large, back from making true progress. As a direct reaction to this, however, an underground and hedonistic club culture blossomed as a younger generation, determined to take a different approach to life and community, took hold. Leading the way in this development is one of the capital city’s most prolific sons, Mark Rogan - accomplished producer, sound designer and DJ - and integral part of the Northern Irish electronic scene. Born and raised in North Belfast, Mark was exposed to and instilled with a passion for music from an early age, taking special influence from his father’s record collection, which exposed him to everything from late 60s/70s rock to disco to 80s electronica. Bored by the mainstream output of radio, he quickly launched himself into record buying, a hobby which began at an early age. One of the great turning points for Mark, however, was the teenage discovery of House, Hard Trance, Techno and Hardcore that took off in the nineties. “I had to settle with buying or copying tapes, which I got off my cousins who went to the clubs. They were some of the best days of their lives - it was a total release to the strains of growing up in the shit going on here. I learnt first hand that music itself was a common bond and brought people together.” It was at this point that Mark got his hands on his first set of belt-driven turntables along with a basic two channel mixer. Throwing himself into making mix-tapes for friends and DJ-ing at house parties was just the beginning. His cousin, who had been caught by the techno bug after living in Amsterdam, taught him how to beat match and mix properly, helping to introduce him to the proper underground sound of Techno. Moving away from the Hardcore and Trance scene, he started playing, listening and exploring further the musical roots of Techno: from the deep and soulful, from Detroit to Chicago, from the funky to the hypnotic and atmospheric. Techno consumed him, as he, himself, admits, “I became totally engrossed by Techno. I loved everything about it; the feelings, the emotions that came with it.” Soundtracking his day-to-day life from then on were artists including: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig, Robert Hood, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke, Surgeon, Regis, Ben Sims, Speedy J, Umek, Carl Cox, Trevor Rockcliffe, Vince Watson, Paul Mac, Chris Cowie, Mauro Picotto, Marco Carola, Adam Beyer, Slam, Steve Rachmad, Joris Voorn, Smith & Selway, Ian Pooley, Damon Wild, A.Paul, Jamie Anderson, Hardcell & Grindvik, Mhonolink, Joey Beltram, The Advent, Rino Cerrone, Michael Burkat, Lars Klein, Bas Mooy, DJ Rush, Felix Krocher, Sven Wittekind, Pet Duo. This feverish consumption of music and dedication to DJing led quite naturally to his first attempts at making beats on an old computer. An ignited passion for making his own productions then saw Mark take music onto college education, gaining distinctions in First Diploma Performing Arts in Music, a National Diploma in Music Technology and a City & Guilds Diploma in Multi-track Recording and Composition. Armed with this technical knowledge and grounding in music theory, Mark continued to lay down industrial-strength slabs of Techno and began sending out demos. It was not long before he was picked up by small independent label, Hereket, managed by up-and-coming Techno producer, Ilgar Khaligov. This first EP, Boriquas was a bold statement of intent and a warning sign of what was to come in from succeeding releases. Since then he has released on Paul Mac’s Sula Muse Recordings, Chris Cowie’s Bellboy Records, Labrynth Recordings, Triple Recordings, M_Rec Digital, Static Recordings, DSNT Records and A. Paul's Naked Lunch. With a theory of producing quality over quantity central to his beliefs, no Mark Rogan production is ever the same. His characteristic wave of other-worldly, off-kilter stabs, distorted pads, bolstered by 909, bass-heavy kicks goes some way to describing his signature, uncompromising sound, but in each production there is something new to discover. His undying passion, talent and commitment as a producer and DJ sets him apart from many working in the field of Techno nowadays. 2013 will see Mark release further new material and continue to climb the ranks within the global techno community.
