It was not a system.  It was a 40-foot roll of fax paper on the floor and a hairdresser who fired her as a client. And it changed everything about how she thought about what it means to truly let go.   Summary "We build the business for freedom and then we become the slaves of it."  Host Laurie Barkman sits down with Michele Hecken, entrepreneur, advisor, and author of The Art of Offboarding, a book that challenges everything business owners think they know about delegation, freedom, and letting go.  Michele started a language translation company in 1993 using fax machines before the internet existed, grew it into a global business serving major law firms, and burned herself so completely that her hairdresser, her doctor, and her best friend all gave her the same message in a single night: you have disappeared.  That wake-up call led her to rebuild her company from the ground up, not by delegating tasks, but by offboarding entire responsibilities, until she was working just four to ten hours a week.  Fifteen years later, she sold to a strategic buyer at seven times EBITDA in an all-cash deal that closed in three months and came in at more than double what her accountant told her she could get.   Key Insights Stop delegating tasks. Start offboarding responsibility. Delegation gives someone a task while the owner keeps the mental load and the ownership. Offboarding transfers the entire responsibility permanently. As long as you still own everything you have delegated, you are not free. You are just managing from a distance and waking up at 2am wondering who has the deadline. The line in the sand only works if you hold it. When Michele's husband asked her to proofread one paragraph before she left for the gym, she said no and felt guilty about it. But she knew that saying yes would have undermined six months of trust-building with the team and pulled her straight back in. Once you step out of a role, you cannot step back in. Even once. Draw the line and hold it. Your team cannot follow a role transition you never announced. Michele changed her role from translator and proofreader to Chief Revenue Officer and forgot to tell the team. Everyone kept coming to her with the same questions. The lesson: have a job description, share it with your team, and explicitly communicate what you are no longer responsible for. Less than 5% of founders have a job description for themselves. Business runs on owner relationships until it does not have to. The biggest objection Michele hears is "I cannot give this client to someone else." She built every relationship with every lawyer her firm served and then hired a salesperson, introduced them to each client personally, and walked away. The mindset is what matters. You can only create what you believe is possible. Know your number and do not let your accountant set your ceiling. Michele was told she might get three to four times EBITDA. She walked away with seven, in an all-cash deal, with no earn-out, that closed in three months. She set her own number, built her pitch around the value she had created, and walked away from offers that did not meet her criteria. The business running without her was a core part of that premium. Offboarding your brain is as important as offboarding your tasks. When you never stop, your brain never gets the rest it needs to generate insights and ideas. The cycle of idea to execution without celebration or rest depletes the nervous system and keeps founders from seeing what is on the horizon. Slowing down is not a luxury. Im September 1996 erschien "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" von R.E.M. Auf ihrem zehnten Album klingt die Band mal rau und direkt, mal melancholisch und nachdenklich. Entstanden ist ein vielseitiges Rockalbum, das R.E.M. mitten auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere zeigt. Die US-amerikanische Band um Michael Stipe, Bill Berry, Peter Buck und Mike Mills hatte kurz zuvor einen neuen Plattenvertrag abgeschlossen, der ihr für die nächsten fünf Alben rund 80 Millionen Dollar einbringen sollte. Das war eine Risikoinvestition, aber nach vorherigen Erfolgsalben wie "Out Of Time" (1991) mit dem Megahit "Losing My Religion” oder dem Album "Monster" (1994) gehörten R.E.M. zu den größten Rockbands der Welt. Die Band war also in einer komfortablen Position und nutzte diese Freiheit, ohne sich dem Massengeschmack anzupassen. Auch auf "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" finden sich außergewöhnliche Songs, die nicht unbedingt nach den Regeln des Musikmarkts funktionieren. Trotz des enormen Erfolgs und eines millionenschweren Plattenvertrags bewahrte sich die Band ihre künstlerische Freiheit. This week on Tuesday Night Detectives, two very different private investigators, back to back. We open with Richard Diamond, Private Detective and "The Private Eye Test," broadcast 19 March 1950. Dick Powell stars as the wisecracking former cop turned private eye, this time sitting a formal licensing exam alongside every other private investigator in the city. It should be routine, until the staged corpse in the training exercise turns out to be a real one, and Diamond has to solve a murder from inside the exam room itself. Then we visit The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and "The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez," broadcast 12 February 1940, starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Watson. Professor Coram's secretary is found stabbed to death in a locked study at Yoxley Old Place, his dying words pointing only to "the professor." The single clue left behind is a pair of golden pince-nez, and from that alone, Holmes builds one of his most purely deductive solutions in the entire canon. What do I mean and why might that be?   As any storyteller knows, memories help us reflect on our past, shape our identity, and inspire us to create new experiences. Memories serve as reminders of meaningful experiences and connections, the rich soil from which our personal narratives arise. Memories are not just the purview of our grandparents and aunties. At any stage of our lives memories beckon us to look back on our past, helping us understand our journey and personal growth from then til now. In this way our memories play a crucial role in shaping who we are, as our experiences define our values and beliefs. Once we have a better grasp on who we are, what we've done, accomplished, weathered and overcome we are better positioned to seek out new adventures and create additional meaningful memory moments. Following are a few of the many benefits of collecting memories: • Fostering deeper connections with others, promoting a sense of identity, and providing joy through positive reminiscence • Engaging with cherished memories can reduce stress and improve overall mental well-being as we relive positive experiences and feelings that buffer against stress and anxiety. • Preserving personal memories through documentation can improve self-esteem by recalling personal achievements and strengthen social connections through shared memories with others • Engaging with cherished memories can provide a sense of purpose, contributing to a positive outlook on life • Capturing memory moments through photography and videography creates a visual record of experiences that can be revisited and shared • Writing down experiences and thoughts can help solidify memories and provide a narrative to reflect upon later • Sharing stories and memory moments with loved ones can help keep them alive and create new connections Story Prompt: Whether you collect your memories in shoe boxes or treasure chests, written journals or photo albums, in digital formats or something else, cherish what you have collected so far. In this warm and wide–ranging episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes back three beloved guests with brand–new picture books that celebrate courage, representation, and creativity. First, Kelly Starling Lyons returns to share Writing Magic, a tender story about Dom, a little girl from a family of Black riders who longs to ride a big horse named Magic but is scared. Kelly talks about the book's unforgettable launch on the very farm where the real horse, Ardent (Magic in the book), lives—and how kids got to meet the horse, the family models, and even handle real horse gear. She explores the rich, often overlooked legacy of African Americans and horses, from Black cowboys like Bass Reeves to modern "Black cowgirls" such as Caitlin Gooch of Saddle Up and Read, who blends literacy with horses. Kelly also shares how families can use the book to talk with kids about their fears, dreams, and what kind of support they really want from the adults who love them. Then Jed is joined by author Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen and illustrator Leeza Hernandez to celebrate Cats in Conductor Hats, the follow-up to Cats in Construction Hats. They pull back the curtain on their unusually collaborative author–illustrator relationship, from early brainstorming with their editor to playful "Easter eggs" like a recurring Highland cow in a bathtub. Leeza talks about the challenge of drawing trains that feel whimsical but not too realistic, and Sudipta describes how tiny real-world moments—even a cow on train tracks in Newark—can inspire big story ideas. In 1987, Ralph Bakshi assembled a ragtag crew of animation visionaries for the sake of rebooting Mighty Mouse: a C-tier cartoon hero mostly absorbed by Baby Boomers through ever-present reruns. Though the pitch seems lackluster, the execution certainly wasn't. Bakshi's team of animation rebels turned what could have been a corny concept into pure brilliance, and then went on to inspire and create all of the animation we enjoyed throughout the 90s and beyond. Disney has plenty of film franchises, but the biggest in recent years has to be the direct-to-streaming "Descendants" series. Launched in 2015, followed by "Descendants 2" in 2017 and "Descendants 3" in 2019, the series shifted in 2024 with a new cast for "Descendants: The Rise of Red." Many of those new characters return for "Descendants: Wicked Wonderland." Guest: Felicity Kusinitz from the Flopcast joins John and Jim to discuss Season 26's most confusing story. A Script Too Big for Its Own Shoes Mark Platt submitted "Lungbarrow" to the show—a bold move for a writer with no professional credits beyond Doctor Who fan fiction. JNT immediately shut down his original concept (a full revelation of the Doctor's origins involving Gallifrey, Rassilon, and Omega) and asked him to rework it. Platt transplanted the thematic weight of that rejected story into a Victorian Gothic setting, creating Ghost Light. The result is a production that was heavily edited, with numerous explanatory scenes cut to fit three episodes. Even now, decades later, the story remains notoriously difficult to follow on first viewing—and according to many, even on subsequent viewings. Why This Story Rewards (and Frustrates) Repeat Viewing Felicity came in as a genuine enthusiast for this story, despite her general ambivalence toward the McCoy era. She's watched it multiple times and finds it improves with knowledge of what's coming. The New Adventures novels (particularly "Lungbarrow," which completed Andrew Cartmel's original Master Plan concept) have deepened her appreciation retroactively. Yet even she admits the first viewing is a puzzle box without instructions. Jim, meanwhile, found it nearly incomprehensible—he spent much of the episode laughing at the absurdity while also trying desperately to understand what was actually happening. Too Many Characters Syndrome Strikes Again The story suffers from the same overcrowding that plagued Battlefield. There's Josiah Samuel Smith, Control, Nimrod, the Reverend Matthews, the Constable, Mrs. Pritchard, Gwendolyn, the maids, Inspector McKenzie, and eventually Light itself. Each arrival adds another layer of confusion. Jerry Lange's earlier concerns about "too many characters" find their most vindicated expression here. Some characters could have been eliminated entirely, and others—particularly the Reverend and the Constable—feel like they exist only because they were written before the cuts. A Doctor Who's Getting Darker (And Meaner) A troubling thread emerges in this viewing: the Doctor is increasingly manipulative and even cruel with Ace. He brings her to a house without explanation, observes her distress as a kind of experiment, and generally treats her as a subject to be studied rather than a companion to be protected. This emotional manipulation—combined with McCoy's alien coldness rather than zany warmth—marks a shift in the character that will come to a head in the final story. Atmospheric But Muddy: The Audio Problem The story is visually and aurally striking—genuinely evoking Hammer Horror and the Hinchcliffe era with its Victorian setting and Gothic atmosphere. Yet the production suffers from audio mixing issues. The soundtrack is prominent enough to drown out dialogue, particularly Ace's lines, which are sometimes difficult to parse. This compounds the story's already confusing nature; listeners are struggling both to understand the plot and to hear what characters are saying. The Incomprehensible Becomes Character-Driven Once Light arrives—a being of pure energy obsessed with cataloguing life but appalled by its constant evolution—the story gains a genuinely interesting thematic core. Light's childlike wonder and petulant rage when confronted with change creates an intriguing antagonist, even if the costume (flowing cape, pale makeup, styled hair) reads more as "space fairy" than "cosmic entity." The Doctor defeats Light not through action but through argument—a Kirk-like tactic that works here because the concept itself is compelling enough to carry it. What Works, What Doesn't The setting works beautifully. The cast interactions (particularly Ace and Gwendolyn's constant wrestling matches) add levity. Sophie Aldred's increasing maturity as an actress and her character's evolution is noticeable. The costume design is excellent—though Ace keeping her boots on under the Victorian dress is a nice character touch. What doesn't work is the clarity; the rushed ending; the revelation that Control, Fenn Cooper, and Nimrod escape in the spaceship (leaving Ace's future burning of the house still unexplained); and the general sense that crucial scenes were left on the editing room floor. The Crown Jewel of Cartmel's Tenure? Cartmel considers Ghost Light the crown jewel of his script-editing era—a statement that says more about what went wrong in his tenure than it does about the quality of this particular story. It's bold, daring, and ambitious. It also fails to deliver on its promises due to time constraints and editorial decisions made by people who didn't care anymore. This is the final production of classic Doctor Who, even though it airs second in the season. The actual last scene filmed was the closing exchange between Ace and the Doctor—a conversation that feels almost tacked on but carries genuine weight: Ace wishes she'd blown up Gabriel Chase instead of burning it down, and the Doctor simply replies, "Wicked." For June, we're spotlighting stars who played multiple detectives on the air and our first leading man is Tom Conway. In 1946, he took over the deerstalker cap from Basil Rathbone on The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and in 1951, he donned Simon Templar's halo as Vincent Price's replacement on The Saint.
