We feature an all-new interview with Jim, as well as some archival interviews with the writer of this novel, with a harder SF leaning than many books in the range

What happens when you buy a vintage Ferrari in Italy, drive it through the Alps in August with failing alternators, and then rally it to Monterey Car Week? Naturally… you plan on doing it again. This week on the Avants Podcast, Dan and Nick sit down with Brian McLean — a man who believes old cars are meant to be driven, not hidden away in climate-controlled garages. From a long-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Shadow to a manual V12 Ferrari 400i, Brian shares stories of cross-country breakdowns, roadside repairs, sketchy one-way flights, questionable financial choices, and why the best automotive adventures usually begin with, “This is probably a bad idea.” The crew dives into: Driving vintage cars thousands of miles on rallies and road trips Buying a Ferrari sight unseen in Italy Why old cars aren't unreliable — deferred maintenance is Rally culture, road-trip philosophy, and building the next generation of enthusiasts Fuel leaks in Nevada, seized bearings in Nebraska, and why every adventure needs a backup plan Pop-up headlights, oddball wagons, V12 obsessions, and the joy of weird cars It's equal parts automotive therapy session, comedy show, and reminder that the destination is never the point — the drive is. As always: Don't just get there… enjoy the drive. Our question of the week: What old car do you want to take on a rally adventure? In 1946, he took over the deerstalker cap from Basil Rathbone on The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and in 1951, he donned Simon Templar's halo as Vincent Price's replacement on The Saint. We'll hear Conway as Holmes - with Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson - in "The Darlington Substitution" (originally aired on ABC on January 4, 1947) and "The Adventure of the Scarlet Worm" (originally aired on ABC on March 24, 1947). Then, he's the Saint in "The Children's Crusade" (originally aired on NBC on May 27, 1951) and "No, My Darling Daughter" (originally aired on NBC on July 15, 1951).

This week on Ron's Amazing Stories we visit the famous brownstone of one of radio's most brilliant—and most stubborn—detectives. Join Nero Wolfe and his trusted assistant Archie Goodwin for an evening of classic mystery, clever deduction, and murder most foul. Created by Rex Stout, Nero Wolfe became one of detective fiction's most beloved characters, appearing in dozens of novels and radio adaptations. Tonight we feature two adventures from The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe starring the unforgettable Sidney Greenstreet as the great detective and Harry Bartell as Archie Goodwin. Wolfe may prefer orchids, gourmet meals, and the comfort of his armchair, but trouble has a habit of knocking at his door. In This Episode "The Girl That Cried Wolfe" (12/15/1950) Archie and Nero receive a call from a redhead determined to create confusion and distraction. But when deception turns deadly, the question becomes—was Nero Wolfe quick enough to stop a murder? "The Impolite Corpse" (12/8/1950) Nero is called to investigate the murder of an overbearing businessman whose endless rules made him plenty of enemies. This time, Wolfe may have discovered a victim who made one rule too many. Tonight we'll explore the fascinating history of Nero Wolfe, from the novels of Rex Stout to his radio adventures, and talk about the remarkable Sidney Greenstreet, whose commanding performance helped define the character for generations of listeners. So settle back, dim the lights, and enjoy Nero Wolfe: A Night of Murder & Mystery. And remember… every story leaves something behind. The Indiscretion of Mr. Edwards is a 1946 radio play from The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The plot unfolds with Holmes and Dr. Watson visiting a Paris circus where their client, Mr. Edwards (a disguised royal), is involved with bareback rider Giselle; Giselle is later found strangled, leading to the identification of a jealous animal trainer as the murderer.Plot DetailsThe story begins with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson at the ringside of "the Circ Royale" in Paris, awaiting a meeting with their distinguished client, Mr. Edwards. It's soon revealed that Mr. Edwards is, in fact, a member of the British Royal Family traveling incognito, whose "indiscretion" lies in his serious involvement with Madame Giselle, a beautiful bareback rider at the circus. The Foreign Office is deeply concerned about this affair and has entrusted Holmes with the delicate mission of protecting Mr. Edwards and subtly ending his relationship with Giselle. To achieve this, Holmes orchestrates a plan to expose Giselle's true mercenary nature by having another English gentleman woo her with promises of greater wealth. This plan takes a dark turn when Giselle is found strangled in her dressing room.Holmes's investigation uncovers that Giselle had multiple entanglements, including with Alfiero, an animal trainer who was deeply in love with her. The clues lead Holmes to deduce that Alfiero, driven by jealousy and rage over Giselle's various relationships and her dismissiveness towards him, was her murderer. The case concludes with the arrest of the animal trainer.Broadcast Information"The Indiscretion of Mr. Edwards" was the 23rd episode of season 6 of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio series. It was first aired on WOR-MBS (the Mutual Network) on February 4, 1946. While the user's query mentioned February 24, 1946, multiple sources confirm the broadcast date as February 4, 1946. The episode starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson.Although an original radio play, the story is considered to be inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Three Students."

"I'm Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Longstocking, daughter of Captain Efraim Longstocking-Pippi for short—at your service." We watched TWO adaptations of Astrid Lindgren's classic novels, "The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking" (1988) and the original Swedish "Pippi Longstocking" (1969), and we're seriously considering becoming exotic pet owners. Pippi Longstocking is the original "Quirky Girl" (sorry, Mayim Bialik), and we're all just chasing her level of coolness to this very day. She dressed like a weirdo, lived in a mansion with a pet monkey, her own horse, and a giant bag of gold— oh, and she could also lift grown men off the ground with her bare hands. The two versions of Pippi are definitely filled with nostalgia, but which version do you choose? It seems that the divide between Millennials, Elder Millennials, and the elusive Xennial can be drawn between the 1988 "New Adventures" starring Tami Erin and the 1969 "original" starring Inger Nilsson. Erin embodies the character for an entire generation, with her acrobatics and attitude, but those of us (ahem) senior members of the Pippi fan club are drawn to Nilsson and her company's more childish take on the characters. Can we forgive Pippi for being such a brat because Inger Nilsson is just a little kid, whereas Tami Erin gives the character a bit more tween sassy energy? Whichever Pippi you grew up with, we can all agree, we would have given up all our best toys just to be Pippi, even for just a day.  Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay   Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna Cover Art by Shaun Piela

This episode features listener takeaways from the recent RootsTech 2026 conference. Diana discusses the overall positive impressions of the event, noting the high quality of the presentations and the unanimous message about disclosing the use of AI and double-checking its work. Nicole and Diana review several classes on AI, including transforming family history into song, understanding AI's role in archival stewardship, and mastering the basics of AI for genealogy. They share lessons on using AI to abstract information from records, create citations, and analyze research logs to identify gaps. Diana also discusses her class on using AI to clarify complex court records by translating obsolete terms and organizing chronological data. The hosts share insights on specialized research areas, methodology, and records. Diana highlights classes on DNA, including using shared-match grids to analyze and group DNA matches and a methodology to defeat the "Genealogy Gremlin" by evaluating match pedigrees and mitigating confirmation bias. They share a listener's review of Michael Lacopo's session on how to successfully approach non-responsive cousins to encourage them to share their DNA. The hosts discuss classes on research methodology, such as resolving same-name issues by building identity profiles and constructing timelines, and using genealogical analysis to solve conflicting birth dates. Diana notes that a class on probate files reveals that these records contain many rich documents beyond the will, offering clues about an ancestor's associates and lifestyle. They also share Sue Taylor's review a class on Italian records that explains the Latin grammatical forms—nominative, genitive, and accusative—found in civil and parish records. Listeners learn how to access recordings and handouts from RootsTech to apply new AI tools to their research, master advanced DNA analysis techniques, and apply genealogical proof standards to complex records and challenging research questions. In this episode, we delve into a fascinating Sherlock Holmes story set during New Year's Eve 1899 in Scotland, blending tradition with mystery. Dr. Watson recounts his adventure with Holmes at Dunbar Castle, involving a family inheritance, an apparent murder, and a cunning scheme to uncover a hidden secret—culminating in one of Holmes's classic reveals. Most people believe the law is clear-cut—that a will or deed is either valid or invalid. But Holmes reveals that some of the most notorious cases hinge on a simple arithmetic mistake—and a cleverly concealed secret. When a family's inheritance is up for grabs, logic and cunning collide in a story packed with surprises, hidden truths, and a manuscript by Sir Walter Scott that turns everything on its head.In this thrilling episode, Holmes and Watson unravel a perplexing inheritance dispute set against a grand Scottish castle. You'll discover: how a supposed treasure chest made of gold actually hides a missing manuscript, and how a centuries-old family legend almost costs a man his rightful inheritance. Holmes breaks down the subtle clues that expose a conspiracy driven by greed, and teaches us how seemingly minor details—like a calendar quirk—can cause a legal disaster. We break down the clever ruse that nearly leaves a man disinherited, and reveal the surprising truth behind the 'stolen' money and the fake murder plot. This story underscores a vital lesson: even the best-laid plans can go awry if overlooked details—like whether a year is a leap year—aren't understood. Holmes's insights into calendar anomalies show how seemingly trivial facts can be pivotal in solving crime and salvation alike. The stakes? A family's honor, a budding romance, and an inheritance worth thousands. If you love mysteries that combine wit, history, and a dash of literary intrigue, this is must-listen.Perfect for enthusiasts of classic detective tales, legal puzzles, and clever riddles, this episode offers a master class in deduction wrapped in a captivating story set in Victorian Scotland. Whether you're a Holmes devotee or new to the game, you'll walk away with a fresh appreciation for the power of detail—and that sometimes, the biggest secrets are hidden in plain sight. Don't miss this classic Holmes adventure, where a false bottom and a manuscript by Sir Walter Scott change everything—and remind us that cleverness, patience, and precise knowledge are the ultimate tools for justice.

In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I discuss the significant leadership changes at Oracle and what they signal for the company's future. Highlights 00:03 — One of the things that has become clear over the last several months is that there are big changes taking place at the top of Oracle. I wanted to go into that a little bit, particularly how this is all leading up to what is an excellent new adventure for company co-founder and chairman Larry Ellison. 00:21 — I think it's a remarkable time here. Now, clearly, I'm not saying that Larry Ellison is stepping aside. I mean, six months ago, we saw longtime CEO Safra Katz move from CEO. She elected to move to the new position of executive vice chairman. In those six months, we've also seen the ascendancy of new CEOs, Mike Sicilia and Clay Magouyrk. 01:09 — Again, this is not about Larry Ellison leaving. I think the new adventure he has was really brought into clear light on the March 10 fiscal Q3 earnings call for Oracle, when there was no opening statement by Larry Ellison. I mean, that's something he's done for the last 150, 160 earnings calls. 01:50 — Then, in the Q&A session on that March 10 earnings call, there were seven questions asked. None of them was aimed at Larry Ellison. They were all aimed at Magouyrk and Sicilia. After the final question, he added some thoughts to what Mike Sicilia had said. His point there is to say these are the new leaders of Oracle, the people helping now to set the direction, execute it, and make sure we're going in the right way. 02:40 — The new CEOs are doing a great job. In my estimation, the way they handled themselves in the answers on the March 10 earnings call was terrific. They were very, very, very persuasive, impressive, and compelling. So we can say this is the end of an era, but I think another way to look at it is that it's the beginning of a new era for Oracle. 04:05 — New ideas, speed, the ability to do things that customers haven't ever done before — and Sicilia and Magouyrk clearly have won the full confidence of Larry Ellison and Safra Catz, who believe now, as Ellison said on that March 10 earnings call, Oracle's future is bright.
