Hitting the tipping point: April reveals the final straw that made her walk away from her news reporter role for good (it's way cooler than you might think)... Living the double life: when April's first TV reporting job didn't quite cover all the bills, she turned to a surprising side hustle... You start a podcast to get tons of listeners, right? If you think about those you follow and admire online, most of them have probably told parts of their story that you connected with. So think about how you can connect with your audience in the same authentic way. Know your ideal audience. When you know who you are talking to, you can tell your story from the viewpoint of where they are. They probably can most relate to your “before” because that's probably where they are now. It all starts with them seeing themselves in your story.Your story doesn't have to be in chronological order. We all have lots of stories to tell, but we also don't need to tell every detail. Find the stories that will most connect with your audience and then use that story to tell the beginning, transformation, and other side, your message or lessons learned. There are light beamers. You're human, and nobody wants to do business with robots. In the digital age of AI, we will do a lot of business with robots in the future."It's innate in who we are and how we're designed as human beings that storytelling resonates. We tend to learn through storytelling. This is why storytelling has been around since the beginning of time. We can date it back to the caveman days, and that's how they communicated. They documented their existence by painting in the caves and telling a story. And so, stories do just that, right? They help document our existence. We've come a long way since the caveman days, and storytelling is very sophisticated. There are many ways we can utilize storytelling in our communication. We have unlimited ways to do that now in the digital age that we live in. But at the end of the day, it's still just about connecting with another human being and using storytelling to show that we are all kind of alike." – APRIL"The number one soft skill that most business owners overlook or disregard altogether. And it's what it is really like. I call it a secret weapon in business. This relates to sales, building an audience, and connecting with future and potential clients and existing clients storytelling; we can go so much further with our businesses if we incorporate more storytelling. What performs well on social media is when people, businesses, and the humans behind the business show up and tell real stories. It's not the marketing, it's not the sales pages, it's not even the beautifully crafted testimonials, although testimonials are a form of storytelling. It's just the human being a human. And so, I always say storytelling is going to be the thing that humanizes your business and will allow you to be seen differently than all the other fish in the water because it will make you unique. This is especially important right now in the world that we're entering with AI because AI cannot reproduce your story. So we're going to be bombarded, we are already being bombarded, and I think there's a place for AI; I'm not poo-pooing it, but we need to be careful not just to use AI, we need to use AI and use storytelling, and when you use storytelling, you're going to be able to infuse your personality, your own set of values kind of what you stand for, your flavor, you know, your personality. And that will help create conversions in your sales and your conversations; it's going to bring more people to you and into your audience. It's going to increase your engagement. All those things that we're all looking for as business owners." – APRIL"I'm a big fan of video because you're hearing my voice right now on the podcast. You don't broadcast anywhere on video. So you won't find me on video listening to this episode. But even just the voice, you can hear my voice and the intonation and the way I have inflection. But if you were to see me on video right now, number one, you would see my face. You will see what I look like. You would see my hand gestures because I'm quite animated when I talk, and I use my hands a lot. And I smile, right? I smile, or if I'm feeling something emotional, I might show a little more emotion in my face. And that allows, as human beings, it allows a visual clue as to who we are as people." – APRILConnect with April Adams Pertuis:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lightbeamers/Lightbeamers: https://www.lightbeamers.com/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/ Connect with Nancy Calabrese:Twitter:https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website:https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com

I think anybody will agree with me when I say that life is a journey that's full of ups and downs. While the highs are easy to embrace, the lows can be quite difficult. However, it's important to navigate through these low points if we are to grow and move forward. I recently found myself in one of the many valleys of life, and along with the experience came a myriad of feelings I had to allow myself to feel and acknowledge in order to come to terms with everything that was happening. I enjoy meeting people who love storytelling as much as I do. Even more so if they're the kind who are willing to take over my podcast, put me on the hot seat, and let me share my own inside stories!! Adera Angelucci is the co-founder, director, and producer of the award-winning video and marketing company, SPIRO Creative. SPIRO brings exceptional people and brands to life through video storytelling and marketing. Adera is a kindred spirit, and today she takes over the show! This was such a fun episode to do, so I invite you to listen in as Adera asks me some really interesting questions and we talk about: How I make sense of the world through storytelling, out of which I made an exciting career Shifting our mindset about sharing stories and allowing ourselves to heal through the power of storytelling An experience from 30 years ago that recently surfaced for me and allowed me to see in a positive way despite its negativity The impact of female conditioning on our ability and willingness to share our stories Plus!! Why we decided to do a podcast takeover and how we chose each other for this super fun project Of course, we couldn't end the show without knowing about Adera, too! She shares with me the kind of storytelling she does at SPIRO Creative and why self-promotion should be a key thing for women. This was such a great experience for me to be interviewed on my own show! And if there's one takeaway I wish you gained from today's episode, it's that stories are gifts to be shared with those who need to hear them. So go ahead and share your story. I promise you, your story matters, and someone out there needs to hear it. If we look at the person we used to be and who we are now, I'd say one of the things that would be different is our ambition – or level of ambition. For a lot of us, it's more likely that our ambitions change or even diminish over the years, and this could be due to a number of reasons. But what does ambition really mean? Why are so many people conflicted about whether being ambitious is a good or bad thing? Should we have more ambitions in life, or less? In a recent event I attended hosted by bestselling author and high performance coach Brendon Burchard, one of my biggest takeaways was the need for us to raise our ambitions.
April and I talked about the power of storytelling. How your story is your message to bring people into your world and much much more. April! I'm a Storyteller, and a firm believer that everyone has a story. I am also a Visibility and Media Specialist, and after more than 30 years as a journalist, producer, and writer, I now work with people and brands to help them tell their story in a more authentic way. One of my favorite components of storytelling is piecing the puzzle together to craft a compelling, emotional and meaningful story that touches others. No matter what the business is, what the product is, what the service is — the heart of people is always what matters! I have a 25+ year career as a TV Journalist, Video Producer, Writer and Speaker; I know the value of stories.... and I know how to help YOU make sense of yours. I've interviewed future Presidents, Fortune 500 CEO's, Professional Athletes, and Millionaires... and guess what? Your Story is equally as exciting as theirs. You just need to learn how to tell it, and connect it properly to your message & mission. (there is a connection, I promise!) I've never walked away from an interview without a story to share. It's fascinating to me to uncover someone's uniqueness.... and to help them see it, too! I love this work so much because it lights me up and feeds my insatiable curiosity. When you share your story, you can effectively attract an audience, which can help you grow your business, expand your reach, build a platform, have a larger impact in the world.... when you do this, you shine a LIGHT. My passion created the LIGHTbeamers Community on Facebook to give women (and men, too!) a private and safe space to have open and honest conversations about life, business, personal growth, and spirituality. I also launched my podcast titled The Inside Story Podcast, where I take you behind the curtain of the biggest success stories of entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and change makers.... the men & women who have walked through fire and come out on the other side brighter. Stories that help build connections, community, and collaboration. Have you ever thought about being an author or stepping on stage to speak? If so then you know you must have a well-crafted story. On today's episode I'm talking with April Pertuis, a story expert. She's not just talking about how to tell a story, but how to make sure it gets out to those who are ready to hear it. “Publishing the book is only half the work.” April Pertuis April's book project, Elevate Your Voice is now available on Amazon. Check out the stories of the 14 women who worked with April to share their stories as only they could. This isn't your typical book collaboration. April developed a program centered around embracing and telling their stories. The book is the bonus, the tangible result of the work and experience. These women worked together in a community. Yes, each person had their own story and April led them through the process in weekly calls as a group. A professional editor was hired too. All the participants received feedback from April the story expert, from Lanette Pottle the publisher and from the editor. With each piece of feedback, the authors were able to refine and polish their story. Hear how these authors can now share these stories (and others) in multiple ways moving forward. Some of the participants feel confident and ready to write their own book after learning how story development and publishing work. April breaks down how people chose the stories they wanted to share. There was an over-arching theme, but each person chose what was meaningful to them. When you hear this table of contents (each story) you're going to be blown away! What's next? We know that the publication of the book is really the beginning. It's the opening of a door for the authors. One woman launched a business as a result of telling her story Another is now writing her own full-length book Another group is already on the way to publishing book number 2! April has seen increased visibility and opportunities as a result of working on this project I love that this is a springboard for those who chose to participate. In long game style, opportunities show up when we face the fear and move forward. Hear how April determined if this project would be a good fit for her. This insight and perspective are something we can all benefit from. Another long-game approach: community. These women are now connected. They supported each other and they all helped one another. Relationships were formed that will continue well beyond the publish date. We finish up with the marketing info. April and her team developed an incredible plan for promotion. Hear what they created to make sure the book was a success. Just a few things included: Graphics and materials with a cohesive brand across all authors Developed a launch team to help with promotions Set up interviews to help each author The next cohort has begun! April shares how one of the authors in the 2nd group helped an author who was fearful to open the box of books when they arrived. You're going to love it. Lastly, the proceeds of the book are going to Kiva! What an amazing way to pay it forward. I'm going to make sure April comes back later this year to give us an update on how the book and the authors are doing as well as info on the next one! Buy the book! Learn more about your ad choices. I first met today's guest, April Adams Pertuis, in an online community for female entrepreneurs. She was an award-winning journalist for many years, before deciding to take her skills online to reach as many people as possible. April believes every woman has a story to tell and it's her mission to teach them how. There are so many fears to be identified and overcome, but there is so much power in our stories and when we share them, we inspire others to do the same. If you struggle with fear of being seen, rejection sensitivity, imposter syndrome or the belief that your story doesn't matter, pull up your chair and turn up the volume. This one's for you! Having those tight containers, having the team to help do some of that for me, has created so much space for me to enjoy life. It bought so much of my time back. So a lot has come through growing my business even lately from starting with adding the team members and creating some containers and opening up more space. If you hire a team member and not knowing what they're supposed to do or what they should do, you're not going to get it. And I think a big mistake I see a lot is people try to hire out the outcome. They are not hired the outcome. They'd hire out the clarity. And instead of being like how could I get those or where they come from? They're like, Hey, let me pay you this money really ambiguously to try to generate something really ambiguously. So then I can get upset at you because I was so ambiguous, blame you, fire you and waste more money. You have to understand what your strengths are. And then you have to just implore either a team around you, people around you support around you that help reflect back the things that aren't really our skill sets. It's like the road to personal growth, where it be for ourselves and or our business. It is not a solo journey. If you get in that car and start driving, you are going to crash into a tree and maybe die. You got to have some passengers. You've got to have people in the back. You gotta have the what's, the NASCAR reference, the leader car. we all have a skill set. We all have expertise, we all have experience. And then we get into this trap of doesn't everybody have that? Hasn't everybody hosted an HGTV show or written scripts for television. Hasn't everybody done that I did it this morning. Like that literally you, we get into that trap. So when you want to step onto bigger stages or you want to get into bigger rooms, or you want to sit at bigger tables, you have to look at what your unique value proposition is. And while I know what mine is, I discredited it a lot or I sweep it under the table and I don't use it to my advantage. I don't think it's normal to want to promote yourself 24/7especially as entrepreneurs. But then I think the inverse is having, the relationship with is what gets the attention. This is what inspires people. This is what they're like. Wow. I can do that too. Because every time we promote ourselves, every time we share our stories, every time we are willing to be like, this is who I am, of what I've done.We write permission, slips for other people to be like, God, I can do that. I think a lot of it is like understanding your strengths. Like one of my strengths in marketing and in business is my ability to play up in the clouds and think about things and then understand. There's really two ways to get the clarity is either you have to willingly land on the ground and be like, cool, I have to do it. Or you have to have a team or a process around yourself to allow you to ideate that process. All of our action comes from clarity in any stuckness stagnation, frustration. Anxiety is basically we have an energy or something to be given somewhere, but we don't know where to put it. this goes back to tight containers. Like once you start to understand where you're leaking and you have to just evaluate that you have to like, get really honest with yourself and figure out what are the tasks that as you call them, queen bee roles that I can't really outsource. so in the beginning I didn't do all that. I was just like, I literally was waiting for the VA to tell me what I needed. And so that was a horrible disastrous, couple of VA's that I went through. Not that they were bad VA's but I was a horrible boss. That's really what it was. And so finally it was looking at those things and actually writing down my tasks, like what the hell do I do every day. So that's how I started to create space in my business because I was doing all those things. So now that someone's in the business doing that for me, it's just created so much more space. One of the things that I struggled with a lot that I don't anymore was I was setting unrealistic expectations to my outsourcing. And so I had this like fear of letting go because I was like what if it's not perfect. In the beginning it is hard. Because this is your baby, especially as entrepreneurs, we've built this, these businesses from our head. You’ve built this business from your body. Like it comes out of us, and so it's hard to let go of that control in the beginning. And especially when, if you're a communicator, you have a certain voice, and I have, I've hired copywriters and people to come and do that thing for me before. And that's when I realized that's not where I need to outsource someone else. That may be where they need to outsource that. Wasn't it for me because I'm so particular about my voice and how it comes across. No one else can really do that for me. And that's important to me. So it could be a needle mover to outsource that, but I choose not to because I outsource other things. So you have to, I think there's some give and take in there. Yep. But you also have to learn to you have to indoctrinate your own team. You have to really show them, thank you, teach them and be patient with them and not have these high expectations. The expectation is that actually you actually have to be the leader and the CEO of your business, and you can't expect them to read your brain and be mind readers. They're not. And really evaluate that. And so once I started to realize those were all the mistakes that I made before when I didn't hire well. Then when I really made the commitment to make that change and do better. it's also not my team's job to own the vision of my business. Nope. Their job is to come in and they're like, I'm a part of the team I want to play. Just like we indoctrinate our customers customer journey. You have to give the team that same training. You don't indoctrinate your team by being like here's an SOP. Here's a boom. It's you got to get them into the culture. get them into the vision, and they have to feel a part of that vision. And they had to feel it from day one because I actually hired from that standpoint as you should. we're all out here playing a game and there's no guarantee you win the game, but there's always a guarantee that you can train with the right team and play with the right team and stay with the right team. You create a culture in your team and you're indoctrinated and you're like, this is the vision. This is where it is. And it sounds like then you give it to him and you're like, Hey, now you grow it. Like it's yours, you plant it, you water it, you make it better. What's the most important thing that they know they focus on? or that they can work on and really starting to unlock the power of their story? They're going to have to get really comfortable with being uncomfortable. They're going to have to get really comfortable with the idea that you're gonna have to tap into your vulnerability. You're gonna have to get really comfortable with this concept of being seen and heard. And that's people say they want to be seen in heart and innately. We do innately that we really is one of our biggest desires as humans is to truly be seen and heard.one of the big distinctions, even in business is the moment you own your story. And you really own it. Not judging it, not. And not advocating any result or consequence that came from it, but really being fully witnessed to it is when it gives you the greatest gift as a human being, which is the ability to be proactive and present and not reactive to the emotion. And I will tell you, in my opinion, one of the biggest ways for the fence to feel safe Is to acknowledge that I put the holes in the first place and that can only really come from fully owning the story. That's why there's a difference with people telling their story without emotion. And a lot of times people tell that story in chronological order and it reads like a resume. That is not a story. You're not telling us anything. And it's real, honestly, it's quite boring and nobody's going to listen to that. So the realness of it, the emotion of it, because the thing of it is to the story is we're on this planet. We play in a world where it's a global world, and there's people in your audience who speak multiple languages, different languages. They live in different countries. English is not their first language. They may not even speak English. We don't know. And that we come from different cultures and different backgrounds and different socioeconomic economic statuses and all those things. So those are all languages that we bring to the table, but we may not all speak them, but the one universal language we all speak is emotion. I know what happiness feels like. Sadness feels like fear, despair, all those things, joy. We know what that feels like. So if you can really tap into the emotion of your story, then first of all, you got to feel it. And that's why it's uncomfortable and vulnerable. And that's what people are hiding behind the most, by not telling their story.

Kyle Pertuis of Mindfit Coaching talks about life in Hill Country and his work with various businesses as a consultant.

[5'17] The village of Ansouis, do you say the "s" or not? [6'17] Heather introduces herself and why she and her husband spent two months in the Lubéron. This village was a good place to experience full immersion. [7'51] How did you pick this lovely place in particular? [8'25] One criteria was a walk-able town. [9'55] The difference between a "maison de village" and a "lottissement" . [10'20] A long-long time ago in many "maison de village", the ground floor is where the animals used to live and people setup their house above the barn. [11'26] On a different trip they stayed in Mérindol where they farmed silkworms. [12'26] Let's locate Ansouis and the Lubéron on a map. [14'25] Scenic drive between Lourmarain and Gordes [15'46] Books by Peter MaillePeter Maille made the Lubéron famous in the English-speaking world. What makes this area so charming. [17'58] Why is France so scenic? There is a reason for this! [19'22] Great books and movies about the Lubéro: Manon des Sources, Jean de Florette, and other books by Marcel Pagnol. Another good one is Les lettres de mon moulin (a collection of short stories, including "le curé de cucugnan" that Annie mentions). Uncorked is the book we'll be reviewing soon on the podcast. You join the Join Us in France Book Group on Goodreads if you're a reader. [21'57] Playing "pétanque", the bacci-like game. [24'54] The unspoken yet very rules rules pertaining to drinking wine in France (and alcohol in general). [25'15] Cooking with local foods: duck, rabbit, oysters. Eating outside by candle-light. Buying Paella and Rotisserie chicken at the market. [29'31] Getting to know local markets when you stay for a while, and finding the ones that are more to your liking. [30'34] Pizzeria Nonni in Lourmarin. [31'] Some of the funny things that happened to them in France. Grocery shopping in Pertuis and how French grocery carts are different in France. How you should weigh fruits and vegetables before you get to the checkout. Feeling like a dumb American tourist. [36'] Don't be intimidated by difference, try things even if it's new and strange! [36'38] Attending a celebration in the village and misunderstanding how village celebrations work. French guys trying to get the American visitors drunk. [41'45] Spectacular fireworks display and getting to know people in the village because they weren't afraid to attend this village celebration. [42'] French people can come across as unfriendly because they don't smile at you on the streets and they don't talk to you on the streets. [43'16] Bring your own bags at the grocery store! Using bio-degradable bags for loose produce. [45'22] How did you find the house you were staying in? [46'47] What are places you visited that you recommend? L'Art Glacier near Ansouis Château la Dorgonne in La Tour d'Aigues and the way they do the visit is original and delightful, they send their two dogs along and you can see the vines and the olive trees Château Constantin now owned by William Chase in Lourmarin Hiking in the Lubéron following path markers Mushrooming Gorges de Regalons near Mérindol (walk through a crevasse, many caves too, you can come up on the top of the mountain if you keep going long enough) The scenic town of Gordes with art galeries Vacqueyras and Gigondas, great places for wine, not as well-known as Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vacqueyras has a great wine cooperative where you can buy the wine on tap [50'] Americans may think that French people are fancy when it comes to wine, but we're actually not for the most part. French people don't drink wine at the wrong time of day, but it doesn't matter if you drink it out of a plastic jug. [60'] In Vacqueyras you will see the street lined with big "platane"(plane) trees and the Café du cours (not "coeur" as I said on the show) where they have a great duck barbecue dish. [61'] Pizza trucks are dangerous in France! [62'] Vietnamese food in La Tour d'Aigues, La Perle de Jade, they make great Vietnamese hot pot or fondue [64'] Les Calenques de Cassis which are more difficult that it seems they should be. [65'] Soccer match in Marseille where the fans are extremely intense: the sing, they chant, they dance, you can't hear the person next to you talking. [66'] Camargue to see the flamingo, the horses, the salt bays. [67'] Cucuron is a delightful little town with a great market—funny name, it sounds like "rounded behind" in little French kid parlance. [68'] Little wine bar called in Mérindol La Cave à Aimé. [72'] Fontaine de Vaucluse, natural pool that floods the area around in the Spring, but it's a dreamy beautiful blue the rest of the year. There is also a nice market there and the town is lovely too. [75'] Bonnieux, it's along the Gordes drive and it's worth a stop. You can drive almost all the way to the top and then walk, there are beautiful trees, it's a lovely place to stop for a picnic or stop at a restaurant. It's steep and it overlooks the valley, so it is picturesque. [77'] Roussillon and the red rocks. It's a pleasant town to walk through, it's a lovely place for a hike because it's so different from other places in France or even in the Lubéron. Don't just go through the town, but do hike around. There is a place in the city where you can pay an entry fee, but you can see the same things on other hiking paths. [79'] Abbey de Sénanque, the most photographed lavender fields in Provence, the products the monks make there are wonderful, truly potent lavender products. The right time of year to see the lavender fields in bloom is late June to mid-July. [81'] The light and scents of the Lubéron are what make it special. The environment there is unlike the rest of France. You get the sequedas, the dry air, lavender, thyme, rosemary, that grow wild, and when you step on them as you hike you get wonderful sensations. That's why Van Gogh and Cézanne painted there, the light is gorgeous there.
