This week we explored news from around the world of summer and winter mountain resorts including:Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network, Glamos that the countries glaciers have 31% more snow on them now than on average over the years between 2010 and 20209% of skiers in French resort were from the UK, that's the largest group after the FrenchFrance's ski season has just come out with some good news about the snow because above 1800 metres, snow accumulation was 20-30 cm's above the averagePeak Retreats have just launched what they say are affordable family summer holidays in the mountains and I took a look at some of the deals they have on offer – they go to the likes of Les Contamines, Samoens, Le Grand Bornand and Val Cenis. For around £1100 you can get a nice two bedroom apartment for a week that also includes a return ferry crossing, so pretty decent. Check those out at peakretreats.co.ukSkiline are offering chalets in Les Gets, Morzine and some of the Austrian resorts too. She mentioned that she had a very positive experience with her AMGA courses and wanted to encourage other aspirant female guides not to be afraid to take the first steps to become a guide.Originally from the east coast, Allie learned to ski in the Poconos at the age of 3. In 2010, she moved to Tahoe to pursue bigger mountains and a full time career in the ski industry. She has traveled all over the country and the world to teach skiing and coach ski racing. Allie is a USSS Level 400 Alpine Coach, Coach Developer and Alpine Official, has her PSIA Alpine Level 3, Children's Specialist 2, Freestyle Specialist 1, Resort & Divisional Trainer, and Snowboard Level 1. With her eye on steeper and deeper lines, Allie started backcountry guiding in 2020. She is an AIARE Course Instructor, has her Pro 1, and is an AMGA Apprentice Ski & Alpine Guide. Je quitte le refuge de Shipton Camp à 4200m pour atteindre le sommet, la pointe Lenana à 4985 m, avec l'objectif d'y arriver pour le lever du soleil. Nous sommes réveillés à 2h du matin par les guides. Température extérieure : en dessous de zéro. Dans la nuit, un des porteurs, s'est trouvé malade et est reparti… avec mon sac de montagne et toutes mes affaires chaudes. Je me retrouve donc en short avec mes chaussures de montagne. Je me prépare à avoir froid. Je m'attends à manger un petit-déjeuner copieux et on se retrouve à manger des biscuits secs. Après ces quelques nouvelles fâcheuses, on part à la frontale pour 600m de dénivelé. On ne voit rien. J'ai froid. Hypoglycémie. Eric se souvient avoir encore des barres chocolatées dans son sac et m'en tend une, puis deux. L'effet est immédiat. L'apport de sucre me réchauffe. Je me sens revivre. Vers 5h du matin, on arrive à la Via Ferrata, puis au sommet. Le soleil se lève au-dessus des montagnes. Instant magique. Rapidement, le guide nous propose d'entamer la descente, car le refuge est 3500m plus bas, soit 8h de marche supplémentaire. Je ne suis clairement pas au top de ma forme. On s'arrête à un premier lodge, qui s'avère être un refuge brut. Pas l'ombre d'un cuisinier. Je m'écroule d'épuisement pendant une heure, avant d'être réveillé par notre guide. Toujours rien dans le ventre. On arrive enfin dans un lodge magnifique, le feu crépitant dans la cheminée. On a pu bien manger, bien dormir, bien se réchauffer. Petter is a professional trailrunner/skier for the Adidas Terrex team. In 2022 Petter won the high profile Transvulcania race in La Palma and the CCC race at UTMB, setting a new record,  amongst other races leaving him with a top 10 ranking in the trailrunning world. He holds the fastest known time for Kebnekaise (sweden's highest mountain) which is 7 km and 1460 meters of ascent, including a glacier and a Via Ferrata route (without safety equipment). His skiing achievements include a 2nd in the U23 and 4th in the open Swedish championships. Aside from all this, Petter is studying his master's in Industrial Design at NTNU in Trondheim. In 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway, Tommy Moe became the first U.S. male skier to win two medals in the same Olympics—one Gold, the other Silver. But Moe is much more than just one of the greatest downhillers in history; he is also a fun-loving free-skiing enthusiast and a pioneer of heliskiing in his adopted home state of Alaska. As someone who has skied just about everywhere for fun and sport, he's the perfect guide to lead us on a global adventure to the world's top ski destinations for 2022. Moe starts in Alaska, where he cofounded and co-owns the Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. Set in the Tordrillo range a 40-minute flight from Anchorage, the luxury wilderness lodge offers access to some of the most extreme skiable terrain on Earth. But the vast wilderness also offers a range of long, wide-open cruiser runs and everything in between. During summers, the lodge is an ideal base for fishing, rafting, and adventures by via ferrata—a mountain network system that, as Moe explains, opens up the thrills of rock climbing to people of all skill levels. For those interested in heliskiing, Moe's main advice is to do your homework. Research your options and make sure that whatever destination you choose offers the right slopes for your abilities. He also advises that you get in shape before your trip—you don't want to blow a week of heliskiing by getting injured or too worn out to make the most of it.  In addition to an epic heliskiing adventure in Alaska, Moe has some other ideas for where you should hit the slopes in 2022. Not surprisingly, he recommends his current hometown of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Known as a skier's mountain—boasting 4,129 feet of pure fall lines with no traversing—the Jackson Hole Resort has long been a draw for experts. But Moe says the town has developed a broader appeal over the years, especially with the addition of new luxury hotels like the Four Seasons. A new hotel in Taos, the Blake, prompted Moe to ski New Mexico's premier resort a couple years ago—and he was blown away. Also in the U.S., he loves Whitefish Mountain Resort in his native Montana. Hopping over to Europe, Moe cites Val d'Isère, France, at the top of his list. During his many times racing in Val d'Isère—with its idyllic backdrop of a European town with stone and wood buildings, crepe shops, boutiques, and restaurants—he was drawn to it for more than its superb ski slopes. But his fondest memories are of hitting the powder with his teammates on days it snowed too much to race.   Moe talks with Bruce about St. Anton in Austria, Portillo in Chile, Las Leñas in Argentina, Revelstoke in British Columbia, and Niseko in Japan, which he says combines some of the world's best powder with a truly unique cultural experience. For destinations like Japan or Austria—or anywhere, for that matter—Moe stresses the benefits of skiing with a guide. (Lander, WY) - As discussions concerning the proposed Via Ferrata in Sinks Canyon are set to continue at a meeting on December 14th, 1330 KOVE AM / 107.7 FM's Coffee Time host Vince Tropea recently sat down with parties both for and against the "iron trail." For those unaware, Via Ferratas are “permanently cabled cliff-side trails that allows non-technical climbers to have a guided climbing and traversing experience in vertical terrain,” according to the Sinks Canyon Master Plan description. The proposal has turned into quite the topic of debate, with hundreds of Fremont County citizens attending the various meetings discussing the matter. Lander Chamber Executive Director Owen Sweeney and Chairman of the Committee for the Via Ferrata Sam Lightner spoke in favor, citing what they see as a potential economic development and possible tourist draw for the Lander area. Sinks Canyon Wild volunteers Tom Troop and Bob Oakleaf, a retired Game and Fish Biologist, spoke on behalf of those against the proposed Ferrata, expressing concerns about the peregrine falcon nesting sites in the vicinity of the initially proposed location, as well as the overall concern about the appearance of the climbing route. Tommy Haga gjorde FKT'er før FKT var en greie. Han fridykker og skyter middagen sin med harpun. Han debuterte som ultraløper som 18-åring da han løp et 6-timers-løp på Jæren i 2010. Han løp i fjellet før Kilian gjorde det til en greie. Han gikk på skøyter i ungdommen og har et like heftig skråblikk på trening og det etablerte som Nils van der Poel. Han holder pusten like lenge som Wim Hof uten å bruke Wim Hof-metoden. Han dumpster diver og har bodd i en van lengre enn de fleste. The Dolomites A lot of people’s first view of the Dolomites might be that classic over the shoulder shot, over and along rising grass plain to a 3 peak mountain stood in front. Marta’s was too, and from there she dedicated time to explore the region.  In this episode we welcome Marta from In A Far Away Land. Marta is someone who has had a fantastic amount of experience in the Dolomites, and a perfect suggestion for the podcast from previous guest Kate Fletcher (from Bags Always Packed). Kicking the episode off, Marta goes over some tips and general advice, including to book the mountain huts in advance. The property was spacious and had a bunch of little hangout places under palm trees. Plus there was a really great view from the roof and the stay was not too expensive. She also had fun at the Margaritaville Resort in Orlando, Florida, which has a beach feel and a really great pool. In the surrounding area there is a waterpark along with shops and other activities. Her stay at Les Carrasses in France, was very elegant and affordable. The Mount Juliet Estate she stayed at in Ireland has a lot of character which made for a great stay. Tamara’s last favorite hotel was the Riad Fes in Morocco. This Riad had a really unique atmosphere with its large doors and tile work that made you feel like you were in a palace. Kim loved her stay at the Moon Palace in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. This was an all-inclusive resort that made for a very relaxing stay where she didn’t have to worry about the price tag of food and activities. She loves the Paradise Pier Hotel at Disneyland, where you can get a theme park view room. It is farthest from the entrances so that may be a downside for some. She also likes the Disneyland Hotel,which has light-up headboards and though you still have to walk to the entrances, you walk through downtown Disney which makes it a more fun walk. The Grand Californian Hotel in Disneyland is definitely the closest to the park and will be more luxurious than the others. The Presidio Lodge in San Francisco is close to the Golden Gate Bridge. The Lodge is on an old army barracks type property that has two hotels, a restaurant and the Walt Disney Family Museum. If you are a big Disney fan you might want to check it out. The Lodge is very beautifully done and spacious. They also serve a cocktail hour with wine for adults and lemonade for kids. Favorite experiences/excursions One of Tamara’s favorite experiences was when she was able to camp in the desert in Morocco with her family. They rode camels in and were able to try sand boarding the next day. Her experience with Souk Cuisine and their cooking class in Marrakech. They took you to the market and helped you pick out what you need for the meal you were going to make than you were welcomed in to someone's home, where they helped you cook the meal. The Via Ferrata in Banff was such a great experience to have with her daughter. Jasper Food Tours gave a very unique with their Peak-Nik. You would hike up a mountain with all of your supplies and then learn how to cook a bunch of different items and enjoy the view while you eat. Tamara’s wine tasting experience on Canal du Midi barge. Lastly was the great experience of seeing the Northern Lights and feeding an arctic fox in Iceland! Kim loved her experience skiing in Keystone. Since she first learned how to ski there it was great to be able to bring her kids there. The food tour in Key West was a great experience to have with a friend. Gulf Hagas hike in Maine may have been a hard hike, you had a great feeling of accomplishment when you reach the end. California Road Trip was a really neat experience, being able to spend a day or two a bunch of different places. The Rocky Mountaineer train ride was a bucket list experience with its scenery and relaxation. Northern Ireland Causeway Coast (Carrick a Rede Bridge) was a really wonderful experience and makes you want to stay explore in every direction. Being able to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge was a really fun experience. Royal BC Museum in Victoria was a really impressive experience. Being able to see the Hubbard Glacier from a cruise ship had some really great views to see nature at work. Destination that surprised you Tamara felt that Belfast had a really great food and views. This surprised her because of everything she kept hearing about the location from others in the past, built up this image that was a lot different than the amazing experience that she had. Kim’s first experience with Jamaica ended up being really overwhelming with all of the people at each cruise port bombarding you with things to buy. Her recent trip there at an all inclusive resort made for a much better experience and left you to relax and enjoy your time rather than worry about little things. Favorite new gear Tamara has found some new gear this past year like Taos shoes that have some great style options but have really great arch support. Delsey Paris Chatelet Air tote bag is a great addition to her luggage with a nicer look to it than caring around a backpack. Plus it also has a strap that you can put over you rolling so that you don’t have to carry it on your shoulder all of the time. She also found this new brand of jeans called Fatface, which is a UK brand and they are very comfortable and stretchy. Kim found Forsake Boots for her trip to Ireland that are really great hiking boots. She has also found that she loves wearing wireless headphones especially when she is on a plane. Compression socks that are a little looser than medical ones are less claustrophobic for Kim when she is wearing them. Columbia has an Anytime Bootcut pants that are extremely comfortable and look a little more professional. Favorite trip of the year Tamara loved her time in the Canadian Rockies that she took with her daughter. There was a lot of great views and places to see. If you want to get away from crowds, you can also visit the other nearly Provincial Parks or National Parks like Yoho or Waterton. Kananaskis is about an hour away from Banff, and not nearly as crowded. There are amazing views, great hikes and lakes, and plenty of wildlife. Bears are all over in the Canadian Rockies and bear spray is highly recommended. In Kananaskis you see warnings about bear encounters everywhere. The Via Ferrata at Mt Norquay in Banff is a thrilling adventure for adults and teens. Via Ferrata is an assisted climbing experience that uses climbing ladders and cross suspension bridges to help you climb a mountain without having to actually mountain climb. You do need to be in good shape as it is a workout and it isn't good if you are scared of heights. Jasper Food Tours offers a unique backcountry cooking lesson and picnic called "Peak Nic." You hike up to the peak of a mountain, carrying everything you need, then you learn how to make your food and enjoy a spectacular mountain view while you relax and eat what you have cooked. Two Jake Lake, which is just outside of Banff, is a great spot for scenic photos and a walk along the lake (look for the famous red chairs!) You should never walk on glaciers without a guide. You also want to always follow all signs that are posted. These signs will tell you where to stay away from and what not to do. Shannon McDowell explains why you should experience Via Ferrata in the Dolomites Shannon McDowell (2-time world champion in Ultimate Frisbee), shared her experience of via ferrata climbing the Dolomites in Italy. You may be wondering what via ferrata climbing is. Via ferrata is a lot like rock climbing, but when you climb via ferrata there is a fixed line that you clip into. There is a device you bring with you called a via ferrata device which has an attachment that you use to clip into the rope into the via ferrata. They visited a few areas of the northern Dolomites, the lower dolomites (which has more rolling hills) and the upper dolomites that were more mountainous. When you go via ferrata climbing, you want to select your route at least the night before. It may be a 30 minute to a couple of hour hike to get to the via ferrata route. Shannon and her teammates chose routes that would take about half a day. When Shannon went it was mid-august and thunderstorms were showing up in the afternoon, they got an early start each day. Shannon's favorite part about the trip was experiencing the history of the Dolomites. This area was part of WW1 and has an extensive history here. Where do people go Via Ferrata Climbing? Via ferrata climbing is very popular in Europe and isn't very popular in the United States, yet. The climbing traditions in the US has the goal of leaving the rock the way it was in the 'leave no trace' idea. In Europe, they are more open to adding ladders and line to help others experience the rock in a new way. The Dolomites in northern Italy is top via ferrata climbing spot, and is a magical place you should experience. Where Can You Stay when going Via Ferrata in the Dolomites? The refugio/rifugio is a cabin that is managed by an Italian and these cabins may be right along a highway or in the wilderness. They are like a bread and breakfast. You can buy breakfast or dinner while you're there and is a great home base while you're there. Some refugios have private rooms you can rent and other refugios are bunk bed style like a hostel. Refugios are like hostels, but a bit more adult friendly. You could also camp when doing via ferrata in the Dolomites. Roadway camping in northern Italy has pull outs on the road and camping there is free. These roads are small and windy and may not be the best roads to bring a trailer. You could also do a multi-day camping trip in the Dolomite National Park and have an experience you would never forget. How do you get to the Dolomites? You can fly into Milan, Venice, or you could fly into Munich or Zurich airports in Switzerland. You should do a cost analysis and see which is the best to fly into for you as well as what other adventures you want to have while you're over there. Shannon recommends renting a car to get into the Dolomites and having a car is a great way to get around. Also, you drive on the right side of the road in Italy, so if that's what you're used to, you'll be alright. What type of Climbing Gear Do You Need for Via Ferrata the Dolomites? Shannon recommends bringing shoes with a stiffer sole like hiking shoes. You can also bring rock climbing shoes. If you are a beginner, you definitely don't need to go buy new rock climbing shoes. You should purchase your own via ferrata device of your own. It is a very important safety gear. Check out Black Diamond for via ferrata climbing devices. You should bring a climbing rope in case you fall on your via ferrata device so you can belay yourself down if you fall on a via ferrata device.

Every spring something special happens on the green mountain. The roses start to bloom, and the farmers descend upon their fields to collect their precious pink flowers.  I knew roses are grown for making rose water on Jebal Akhdar, but that's about all I knew until I decided to investigate for myself with my microphone. What I discovered is a traditional, dainty, craft that continues to thrive despite its many limiting factors. What wasn't limiting is the knowledge given to me by my new friends, the rose farmers I met in the village of al Ayn. Yahir al Riyami and Nasser al Riyami take us on an journey into the traditional life of the Omani rose farmers. View images I shot from this year's harvest in the associated episode post on my website. Rose Season Weather is the main factor in determining if the rose harvest will be good or not. This year there didn't see much rain, and I'm told it is significantly affecting their yield. A days picking could yield ten kilograms of flowers, but this year is averaging six kilograms for Yahir al Riyami. Typically the rose harvest starts at the end of March and lasts for about three weeks. However, a bit of rain can fend off the rising heat and extend the season for another week. This year the farmers received a day of rain just after the roses stoped blooming, unfortunately. Water is another factor in determining a good rose harvest. If the tanks are full, the farmers can expect to water using the falaj (traditional irrigation system) to transport water to their precious plants once every five days. This year brought an unusually dry winter and there is only enough water to irrigate every fourteen days, which limits the roses.  The Process When the roses start to bloom, it's all hands on deck to collect the fragile product. Brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters descend on the fields to pick the flowers before the sun rises and dries out the precious rose. There are two main ways to collet the the flowers. The first, and most common, is to take a men's massar (typically worn on the head), or a woman's hijab (also, typically worn on the head), and tie it around your neck in a way to create a storage sack for the picked roses.  The second method is only for the men, and is my favorite. One simply folds up his dishdasha and ties a knot around his waist with the loose material to create a knee-height rose collecting sack. This method can hold a huge amount of fresh roses. Rose Water Once the morning haul is gathered, the farmer takes the pink loot to his still where he will process the roses immediately to capture all the available moisture the flower has to offer. The rose water still is a simple device. At its center is a series of clay chamber pots that sit in a solid base made of concrete or mud. The number of chambers can vary depending on the amount of roses needing processing.  Under the chamber pots is the heat source, a flame. Gas is mostly used these days because it is consistent, convenient, and cheap. When the time comes the farmers places about one-half kilogram 0f his fresh roses inside the chamber along with a small bowl in the middle. Then covers the chamber with a concave lid filled with cold water. The heat turns the moisture in the roses into a gas inside the chamber which condenses on the underside of the lid and drips down into the small bowl. The whole process takes three hours and yields about 350 milliliters of rose water. The still can have anywhere from two to twenty chambers. The rose water from each chamber joins the others in a tank where it will sit for one to two months before it is bottled and sold. Uses Rose water has a number of uses. I always wanted to try out a via ferrata, and it finally happened with a visit to Oman's newest via ferrata at the Alila Jabal Akhdar hotel. A via ferrata is a protected climbing route, and Jebal Akhdar is one of the most beautiful places in Oman. Mix the two together to make a memorable adventure in the mountains. In this episode of the Sultanate, Jonty and I take you along the via ferrata course at Alila Jabal Akhdar with the help of our guides Majid and Rob. Along the way Majid points out the variety of plants growing on the mountain, and how they are used by the locals. We also learn about the history of the surrounding area before we muscle up the challenging section of the course to take in the spectacular view.
