This week, we're trading the hustle of the Champs-Élysées for the hush of honey-colored stone and sunlit terraces. In this episode of our “Skip Paris and…” series, I'm taking you to Gordes, a village that whispers luxury, lives slowly, and invites you to savor instead of scroll. From its rich resistance-era history to a secret underground city and panoramic views that feel like a cinematic dream, Gordes isn't just a destination...it's an energy. We'll explore the beauty, the elegance, and the deep stillness that makes Gordes a soul-shifting experience. I'll also share: Why Gordes is the ultimate example of quiet luxury What happened when I took retreat guests to see the sunrise there (goosebumps!) The 5-star hotel that's carved into the cliffs—and dripping in elegance The secret underground world hidden beneath the village that most tourists miss And why Gordes is less “look at me” and more “come be with me” If you've been craving more elegance, more ease, and more magic in your life this is the episode to light your fire. Forget Thelma and Louise, this is the story of Simone and Louise heading across the southern regions of France from Bayonne to Provence! We started our adventures in Paris, then the Basque region, then across in an easterly direction to Cahors, Uzès, the Pont-du-Gard, the tiny village of Mollégès (which we used as a base to visit Eygalières, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, L'Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue, Gordes, the Abbey de senanque and Avignon) before heading to the next part of my journey in Lyon.Head to the Loulabelle's FrancoFiles website for more info and details but here are a few details worth considering if you're tihinking of a raodtrip in France:1. Avoid the toll roads. You will find all the nuggets of gorgeousness to fill your soul off the beaten track!2. Don't over plan! Have the things you definitely don't want to miss, then keep your schedule open for things suggested by locals, or just stuff that might pop up during your day.3. Take cash for petrol and tolls in case your international cards don't work. The regional petrol stations off the toll roads are almost never manned and are automated only. Petrol stations on the toll roads are usually fine for purchases as for other stores in France with staff in attendance.4. Have coins for parking. Simone noted how clever the French are for having the same type of parking meters everywhere we went! We worked out how to use it on the first time parking and after a few towns we were explaining it to others like we were the local experts! With the Rugby World Cup in France fast approaching, two former All Blacks took it upon themselves to give kiwis a taste of what the host country has to offer. ‘Izzy and Beaver's French Connection' follows Israel Dagg and Stephen Donald on an action-packed tour through France, taking in the sights and scenery, meeting new people, and, of course, causing a bit of mischief. The French have a bit of a reputation when it comes to tourists, English-speaking tourists in particular. However, Dagg and Donald told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that as soon as they found out that they were Kiwis they were perfectly welcoming. “If they think you've got any resemblance with England they don't want a bar of ya,” Dagg told Hosking. “But as soon as you tell them you're from New Zealand, they jump straight into the All Blacks chat.” Throughout the show, Dagg's love of food, wine, and culture is on display, while Donald indulges his love of history, taking the lead on planning, though not on driving. “I was driving,” Dagg joked with the Newstalk ZB host. “I was driving and he would sleep the whole time.” While the pair visited all sorts of places on their trip, they developed a fondness for the little pieces of history. The pair visited Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct in Nîmes, and the Sénanque Abbey in Gordes. “It's the places we never would've gone to,” Stephen said. “They blew our minds.” But even if you take the boys out of New Zealand, you can't take New Zealand out of the boys, and Saint-Tropez was a favourite as well. “Once we hit the coastline? It was awesome,” Donald told Mike Hosking. France is known for its cheese and wine, and according to the pair, it lived up to the hype: “we came back about 28 kilos heavier than we left,” Dagg joked with Hosking. And as for the World Cup itself, both boys are backing the All Blacks, despite their disastrous showing against South Africa. “I feel like it was a mindset thing, they were on different spectrums.” Dagg said of the South Africa loss. “Dump that one and move on,” Donald agreed. Another thing they agreed on was Ireland, giving them “no chance.” “I know people are saying they're ranked number one in the world, but I think World Cups are different.” Where they disagreed was the final - Dagg's betting on the All Blacks and France battling it out again, “like in 2011.” But Donald thinks it'll be South Africa taking on the All Blacks. “The South African-All Black final hasn't happened for a while. I reckon we're long overdue it,” he told Newstalk ZB. ‘Izzy and Beaver's French Connection' premieres Sunday 10th of September at 6:30pm on Bravo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are you introducing your partner to France? Perhaps you're bringing your children to France for the first time. This is an episode you'll hear lots of tips on how to make sure things go so well that they'll want to come back. My guest on today's episode, Megan McKay, has visited France 3 times but this was her partner's first time in France. Megan wondered what if he doesn't like France as much as I do? He was willing to try it, but sometimes things can go wrong. She wanted to make sure they did things they'd both find rewarding.

Eliades Ochoa Titres interprétés au Grand studio - El Carretero Live RFI voir clip RFI vidéos - Extrait Chan Chan / Buena Vista voir clip - Extrait El Manisero, Feat. Manu Dibango, Cuarteto Patria (El Manisero, le vendeur de cacahuètes) - Pena Live RFI, voir clip RFI vidéos. Line up - Eliades Ochoa, guitare, voix - Eglis Ochoa, percussion, chœurs - José Martinez, contrebasse. Son : Benoît Letirant et Mathias Taylor. Traduction : Sara Jarquin-Brigodiot.

In 1940, Varian Fry--a Harvard educated American journalist--traveled to Marseille carrying three thousand dollars and a list of imperiled artists and writers he hoped to rescue within a few weeks. Instead, he ended up staying in France for thirteen months, working under the veil of a legitimate relief organization to procure false documents, amass emergency funds, and set up an underground railroad that led over the Pyrenees, into Spain, and finally to Lisbon, where the refugees embarked for safer ports. Among his many clients were Hannah Arendt, Franz Werfel, André Breton, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, and Marc Chagall. The Flight Portfolio opens at the Chagalls' ancient stone house in Gordes, France, as the novel's hero desperately tries to persuade them of the barbarism and tragedy descending on Europe. Masterfully crafted, exquisitely written, impossible to put down, this is historical fiction of the very first order, and resounding confirmation of Julie Orringer's gifts as a novelist. Orringer is in conversation with Sarah Manguso, the author, most recently, of 300 Arguments (2017), a work of aphoristic autobiography.
Ralph welcomes acclaimed journalist, Andrew Cockburn, who argues that the more we spend on the armed forces the weaker we actually get. And energy security expert Joel N. Gordes explains how best we can safeguard our vulnerable power grid from a cyber attack.

The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #220 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube | Spotify “It seemed an advantage to be traveling alone. Our responses to the world are crucially moulded by the company we keep, for we temper our curiosity to fit in with the expectations of others…Being closely observed by a companion can also inhibit our observation of others; then, too, we may become caught up in adjusting ourselves to the companion’s questions and remarks, or feel the need to make ourselves seem more normal than is good for our curiosity.” ― Alain de Botton, The Art of Travel What if I lose my keys to my rental/car/etc. while I am traveling? No one knows me where I am. I am the only source of income - what if my wallet gets stolen? My passport? As a woman, is it really smart to travel alone? But I will be by myself - won't I become lonely? I don't want to eat alone the entire time - and I love to eat! Above are just a few of the fears I have heard from those contemplating or dismissing solo travel, and at times, some of those fears have danced in my own mind when jetlag was severe and my mind was not being mastered well. And while these are all natural fears to utter if you have never traveled alone, each can be assuaged and should be, after proper preparation, dismissed and not to be worried about. I have written extensively on this topic (see all of the posts at the bottom of this post), so I won't go in detail which has already been shared, but rather share a few thoughts on the wonderful opportunity and insights traveling alone provides the traveler. As I type, I have just returned from a month-long excursion throughout France, as many of you already know. But I am writing that as a reminder. I would advise travelers who may have shaky nerves prior to traveling alone, even myself, to read this post before stepping on a plane for any future trips on our own. Why? Because even I, prior to traveling, especially if my schedule has been busy and harried leading up to the trip, will consider the worst-case scenarios. And every time I return from the trip, I recognize that doing so was energy wasted. All of my energy should be split between preparation and excited anticipation. After all, part of the gift of travel is the time leading up to the trip as studies have shown that it as well can increase our overall happiness. Traveling alone in many ways is a misnomer, as we are never completely alone if we consider our fellow travelers we find along the journey, Mother Nature, and conversations we have with loved ones when we check in from time to time if we choose to do so. The difference is we are never with the same person or persons the entire time which can not only provide variety, but as Alain de Botton shares above, free us from conforming in ways we often do unconsciously. Ironically, when I travel, my barriers tend to come down moreso than when I am at home in ways that allow me to relax and be more fully present. Now that doesn't mean I do not take precautions to protect myself for security purposes, but those are habit at this point when I travel as I have traveled alone for more than a decade and doing so is merely functional as opposed to the emotional barriers that tend to become activated when I am going about my everyday life. The truth is, it was travel that revealed to me this dichotomy of instinctual behavior based on geographical location which caused me to dive deeper into what made me keep my barriers up so adamantly. This examination led me to shift a few things in my everyday life - move away from some friendships, step more intimately into others, etc., and yet this is another example of how travel can improve our lives. ~My luggage for the return flight (one more bag was gained!)~ If we consider the headaches that we worry might happen by choosing to travel alone, most, if not all, could just as easily happen when we are traveling with someone or multiple someones. While yes, you will have at least two heads to solve the fiasco, you will also have two heads to step into a fiasco that could cause the headache in the first place. I guess what I am trying to say is that neither is better; they are just different. The common gift of traveling alone that is universally shared is that your confidence increases as you recognize you can do things you perhaps dismissed were possible previously. And this is true. As well, traveling alone, especially if I have not done so in a few years time, reminds me that I need to trust myself. Traveling alone clears away the cobwebs from my intuition, if I have not trusted it as much as I should have, and shows me that I need to stop doubting so often and instead calmly keep listening to its direction and striving forward. And most importantly, traveling alone brings me back to myself, centers me and shakes me awake if that is necessary. ~Looking up in Paris in late June: I find that when I travel on my own, my feet follow my eyes. Whatever catches my attention is where I often go, and I don't worry about leaving someone behind.~ Speaking of the shaken awake part. It has happened in the past that I was shaken, but not to a clear state of what to do upon returning; however, it was a start, and I chose to see it through, continued to shake upon returning until the cobwebs and learned behaviors that were not aligned with my authentic self finally fell away. Such a shedding doesn't always happen quickly, sometimes it has taken years, but if we keep 'shaking' so-to-speak, our truth emerges, and it is then that we look back at our travels with even more gratitude. And gratitude for having traveled alone. There are truths that I have only been able to experience because I was traveling alone. Partly because at different times in my life, I didn't have the confidence or support to speak up enough to those I was traveling with and say clearly what I would prefer to do or at least in a way that yielding an enjoyable experience. And sometimes I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I just followed what the alpha person suggested. But if I had been by myself on those journeys, I would have just followed my curiosities without worrying about what anyone else thought, when I was supposed to return, etc., which is exactly what I do now. “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” – Anna Quindlen For me, traveling has led me to the life I want to live. Without travel, I would not be and be doing what I am, today. As Anna Quindlen's quote shares, the life I was leading when the trip began, especially the first trip I made to France (which was by myself), is not the life I live now or will be living in the future. ~A journal for your travels is a wonderful way to upon returning, reflect on the person you were when you traveled - where did your mind go, what curiosities caught your eye, how did you feel, why did you feel that way?~ Traveling alone will show you quite quickly where your weaknesses are that can be strengthened. For example, if you immediately are not comfortable in your own company, that is something you can strengthen, and for your best self, you should. As well, if you do not know how to communicate well or engagingly, even if you do not speak the language, perhaps that is a hint that your awareness of the power of clear and effective communication needs to be tended to (which includes body language). One of the lessons I learned on my first trip to France which was in 2000 was to relax, let go of the worry and frazzle that perhaps we have learned when things are not going perfectly, and look around. Ask for help, take a deep breath and know that there will be another train if you miss the one you were scheduled to be riding. More importantly, since you are traveling by yourself, you learn to step outside of yourself. And while yes, you are taking care of yourself, you begin to see that when we only focus on ourselves, our inner world, our potential is limited. When we instead choose to examine "how can I contribute?", "how can I improve so that I can be effective not only for myself but the community I am currently in?", we begin to get out of our own heads and become more present. And when we become more present, the experiences of travel become far more rich and memorable. ~With moments to engage and moments to observe and moments to reflect~ If you are considering traveling alone for the first time, be sure to read the below posts that have been previously written. They will help you prepare specifically and clearly for a successful trip. And if you have traveled alone, but haven't done so in a long time. Or you find yourself settled and perhaps desiring a boost - consider traveling alone. Not only will it boost your confidence if you need it, but it will remind you how amazing the life you life already is or perhaps share with you how to make tweaks and changes that you couldn't see had you stayed in one place. ~SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~International Travel Prep List, episode #183 ~Why Not . . . Whilst Damask is lost in translation, Liam remains by Brod's side for another week to discuss a little bit more Please Like Me. At the start of season 3 Josh and Arnold are kinda-sorta but not really together, Alan and Mei are on the rocks, Rose and Hannah are getting used to living together and Tom is still lonely and pathetic. What a hilarious set-up for a season of light hearted comedy. Too bad it's all ruined by the adorkable Ella played by Emily Barclay. Such a shame.Actually, this season is pretty good. [42'] French people can come across as unfriendly because they don't smile at you on the streets and they don't talk to you on the streets. [43'16] Bring your own bags at the grocery store! Using bio-degradable bags for loose produce. [45'22] How did you find the house you were staying in? [46'47] What are places you visited that you recommend? L'Art Glacier near Ansouis Château la Dorgonne in La Tour d'Aigues and the way they do the visit is original and delightful, they send their two dogs along and you can see the vines and the olive trees Château Constantin now owned by William Chase in Lourmarin Hiking in the Lubéron following path markers Mushrooming Gorges de Regalons near Mérindol (walk through a crevasse, many caves too, you can come up on the top of the mountain if you keep going long enough) The scenic town of Gordes with art galeries Vacqueyras and Gigondas, great places for wine, not as well-known as Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vacqueyras has a great wine cooperative where you can buy the wine on tap [50'] Americans may think that French people are fancy when it comes to wine, but we're actually not for the most part. French people don't drink wine at the wrong time of day, but it doesn't matter if you drink it out of a plastic jug. [60'] In Vacqueyras you will see the street lined with big "platane"(plane) trees and the Café du cours (not "coeur" as I said on the show) where they have a great duck barbecue dish. [61'] Pizza trucks are dangerous in France! [62'] Vietnamese food in La Tour d'Aigues, La Perle de Jade, they make great Vietnamese hot pot or fondue [64'] Les Calenques de Cassis which are more difficult that it seems they should be. [65'] Soccer match in Marseille where the fans are extremely intense: the sing, they chant, they dance, you can't hear the person next to you talking. [66'] Camargue to see the flamingo, the horses, the salt bays. [67'] Cucuron is a delightful little town with a great market—funny name, it sounds like "rounded behind" in little French kid parlance. [68'] Little wine bar called in Mérindol La Cave à Aimé. [72'] Fontaine de Vaucluse, natural pool that floods the area around in the Spring, but it's a dreamy beautiful blue the rest of the year. There is also a nice market there and the town is lovely too. [75'] Bonnieux, it's along the Gordes drive and it's worth a stop. You can drive almost all the way to the top and then walk, there are beautiful trees, it's a lovely place to stop for a picnic or stop at a restaurant. It's steep and it overlooks the valley, so it is picturesque. [77'] Roussillon and the red rocks. It's a pleasant town to walk through, it's a lovely place for a hike because it's so different from other places in France or even in the Lubéron. Don't just go through the town, but do hike around. There is a place in the city where you can pay an entry fee, but you can see the same things on other hiking paths. [79'] Abbey de Sénanque, the most photographed lavender fields in Provence, the products the monks make there are wonderful, truly potent lavender products. The right time of year to see the lavender fields in bloom is late June to mid-July. [81'] The light and scents of the Lubéron are what make it special. The environment there is unlike the rest of France. You get the sequedas, the dry air, lavender, thyme, rosemary, that grow wild, and when you step on them as you hike you get wonderful sensations. That's why Van Gogh and Cézanne painted there, the light is gorgeous there. Ilona and Jim are not Spring Chickens, they've been married for 35 years, and they took up cycling 4 years ago. [9'26] They do have a fair bit of training, but they worked up to 70 or 80 miles per day slowly. [10'31] In France cycling is huge, there are cyclist all over, especially in rural France. Marion Clignet was on Episode 52. [12'28] Why did they choose Provence? Comparing the level of difficulty between different regions of France. [14'43] Choosing bigger roads to go longer distances. Doing day-trips from a central location instead of a circular route. The issue of luggage. [16'52] Renting bicycles from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. [18'18] What happens if you run into a problem like a flat tire or a mechanical problem? [20'20] Did you consider joining a group of cyclists? No, because we love the planning process. More freedom if you ride alone. [21'40] Vélo Loisir Provence Association [24'40] Are French drivers considerate to cyclists? [26'] What GPS did you use? Garmin and Ride with GPS, some D roads are busy, especially around Avignon [27'] French roads classification: A for Autoroute (freeways), N for National, D for Départementale. Have you used Google Maps' cycling option? Ride with GPS is better because it's more of a community where real people share experiences of cycling. [28'31] How often did you get lost? Letting Garmin select dirt roads as an option. [31'] Getting lost is par for the course when riding or hiking. [31'51] Provence cycling tours day by day itinerary [32'] Fly into Paris CDG, RER train into the city of Paris, then the TGV to Avignon, then a bus to Saint-Rémy de Provence. [32'40] The first leg of cycling was north through Avignon, with Chateauneuf-du-Pape as their destination for the day. That was a lovely ride with lots of vineyards, small roads, beautiful views onto the Rhone Valley. [35'] How did you plan your lunch stops? [36'] Stop at the restaurant Le Pistou in Châteauneuf-du-Pape [37'] Long riding day on Saturday at Lisle-sur-la-Sorgue, Gordes, and Roussillon, which was challenging as far as elevation is concerned. [39'47] Running out of daylight and trying to pack too much into one day because it means there isn't enough time spent at each location. [40'26] Planning overnight stays in a few select places so there's enough time to see it. 75 or 75 miles is too far for an out and back. [41'55] Les Baux-de-Provence, mistral wind and needing to walk. [43'48] Riding to Arles. Valley roads and river roads tend to be flat (unless it's a gorge!) [45'11] Stumbling upon random Roman ruins because you're cycling. Walking and cycling are probably the best way to see France. [46'15] Giving up on cycling for one day because of the wind and weather. [46'44] Bus driver refusing to back her bus up a few inches to open the bay on the cargo bus so they could take their bikes on. [47'40] Learning French [49'14] Uzès and the Pont-du-Gard [50'20] Planning another trip around Bordeaux: stay in Bordeaux and doing over-nights in Médoc, Saint-Julien or Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Emilion, cycling association in Bordeaux called Les Dérailleurs. [53] Paris for a few days where they took a walking tour and a dinner cruise, picnic at the Tuilleries. [54'09] General tips for people who want to go on provence cycling tours. Try things so you can have realistic expectations, but don't be afraid to try. Plan out where you are going to eat and bring snacks. [56'] In rural areas you have to bring food and water because stores close and keep strange hours. [59'] Balancing pleasure with sports, taking your time to see things and yet not stop all the time to take photos! [61'] Bring battery backup power and put your phone in airplane mode when not using it. Little battery packs are vital if you're going to be away from your hotel all day. Sometimes you can plug-in at the restaurant. [64'] Signup for a France data plan with your provider. Buying a local SIM card is not worth it any more. [63'] France is so gorgeous that you could take a cycling vacation every year for the rest of your life and not see it all! Liam returns to fill in for a globe-trotting Damask as he and Brod put the second season of Please Like Me under the microscope. Approximately a year has past since Aunt Peg's funeral and things have definitely changed. Josh has moved back in with Tom and new housemate Patrick. Geoffrey is nowhere to be seen and, for that matter, neither is Claire. Instead, Niamh is somehow seeing Tom again and Alan and Mae have had a baby girl, Grace! Rose meanwhile is acting a little too chipper, with a puppy under her arm and a new bright-red hair-do. Surely that can't be a bad thing...can it?CONTACT USEMAIL: huntingseasonspodcast@gmail.comFACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/huntingseasonsTWITTER: www.twitter.com/huntingscastBroderick Gordes: www.twitter.com/bgordesDamask Leary: www.twitter.com/maskymooLiam Gordes: www.twitter.com/liamgordesCREDITSHunting Seasons Logo and Graphics: Sean Kirkpatrick - www.seankirkpatrickdesigns.portfoliobox.netHunting Seasons Theme Song: Jordan Kalyvas - www.soundcloud.com/classicjrex See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
NOTE: The original version of this episode contained a few audio glitches. This is a re-uploaded version which should be glich-less. Sorry for the inconvenience! - BrodWhen the Damask is away the Gordes mice will play. Brod's brother Liam jumps in while Ms Leary is on vacation to talk about one of their favourite shows in recent years, Australian dramedy 'PLEASE LIKE ME'. Created, written by and starring stand-up comic Josh Thomas, 'Please Like Me' centres around Josh, a twenty-something Melbournite, who has been dumped by his girlfriend for 'probably being gay' and is forced to move back in with his mother after she attempts to kill herself. Doesn't that just sound hilarious? The show stars Josh Thomas, Thomas Ward, Caitlin Stasey and excellent every-mum Debra Lawrance. Why do the boys like this show so much? There's only one way to find out......By listening. By listening to the podcast. Defying all odds, Brod and Damask have made it through the complete series of Breaking Bad. Joining them for this momentous podcast is Brod's little brother Liam, who is pretty much the main reason they decided to watch and discuss this show first. With only 8 episodes left can Breaking Bad stick the landing and end on a high, or have the writers jazz-written themselves into a corner with no satisfying escape? And finally, is Breaking Bad really worthy of it's place amongst the greatest shows ever made?Like Hunting Seasons and want more?
