So here we go again - the WORLD's GREATEST Podcast about Video Games is back with another show! This week, it's all about the Splatoon 3. A Nintendo Switch exclusive, our boy Jon sploo'd and goo'd all over the place, in a good way. Possibly a GOTY contender for him - Jon enjoyed playing this game very, very much. In a way Jon said this game kind of did "what Assassin's Creed 2 did for that franchise" - Splatoon 3 has done for the Splatoon franchise. Quality of life upgrades to a game that wasn't bad (Splatoon 2) - but we needed them, and didn't even know it. Capping Jon's excitement for this game was the permanency of Salmon Run. Previously this was limited.....but not any more. Seriously, you can hear his excitement for this game, it's a treat. Jon also warns you to make sure you check the questions about your Splatoon 2 save... if you happen to have played/owned it. He missed a chance to carry over his data. Bummer. We'd love to see you in our twitch chat when we stream live - twitch.tv/weeklygameschat. Special shot out to our twitch chat this week, also to all the emails - ugh...I must STOP. We need more emails - we love them! #nothanos ...here's where you send it - Weeklygameschat@gmail.com - ANNNNND thank you for your tweets, Discord mentions, all the things - thank you! Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Large numbers of pink salmon are returning to our area this summer. “I am seeing these pink salmon return – their numbers appear huge, they are leaping everywhere, finning along the surface for hundreds of kilometers,” emailed independant biologist Alexandra Morton. Lara Sloan, a communications advisor with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), wrote they are expecting a strong return to the Campbell River, based on the strong outmigration from the 2020 brood, cooler ocean temperatures and better food. She added, “The numbers of pink salmon in the Campbell River are similar to 2020 at this stage.” Streamkeeper Cec Robinson pointed out that there isn't a pink run on Cortes Island. “Sometimes on a big pink year, a few ‘vagabonds' stray into our creeks, but not on a regular basis.” A few showed up in Basil Creek during 2015. There have been some good pink runs on Quadra Island in recent years. A couple of dozen fishermen were strung out along the banks of the Campbell River, when Cortes Currents dropped by on July 28. One of them remarked that the pinks seemed unusually small. Sloan disagreed, “the fish are bigger than last year and 2020.” “The 2022 Return are from the 2020 Brood who went out in 2021 where ocean conditions had significantly improved and more conducive to improved salmon survival. Pink fry leaving the Quinsam in 2021 were estimated just under 11 million natural production along with just over 4 million of hatchery supplementation (Total Production of ~15 million contribution to the 2022 return).” Morton pointed to the removal of fish farms from the Discovery Islands, “These are the first generation of salmon to return after swimming through the salmon farm clearances in the spring of 2021. I counted the lice on pinks that spring and issued the huge thank you to Bernadette Jordan because they were so clean.” She added, “Clearly ocean conditions were exceptionally good, so this (strong Pink Run) is a combination of factors.”

In this mini episode of Consolation Prize, we complete our tour of the world by going to the last continent where the United States had consuls: Australia. Alexander George Webster was a consul in Hobart, a port city on the island of Tasmania, but he also served on the Tasmanian Fisheries Commission, a group that was very concerned with making sure that Tasmanian rivers were stocked full of fish. In this episode, we see how Webster used his position as consul to move salmon halfway around the world, from the rivers of California to the rivers of Tasmania. This episode was produced by Abby Mullen and Kris Stinson. Show notes available at consolationprize.rrchnm.org.
We talk about the latest Nintendo Direct! Mario Strikers, Splatoon 3 Salmon Run, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Nintendo Switch Sports, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and SO. MUCH. MORE.

SPOKEN WORD WITH ELECTRONICS #34: Making Music with 2600 Hz Tones and Firmware Audio Update Files Number-based trivia: 2600, the hacker quarterly, is named after this 2600 hertz tone, which is a single tone that can override a payphone's pricing controls with one single command. Hi everyone, welcome back to the show. This week is about loud noises made by computers. Awful sounds like modems, faxes, and my favorite unbearable noise: The firmware update file. Firmware can be updated via an audio file and to demonstrate this, we discuss audio files from Korg's Monotribe, the W-slash sampler from Whimsical Raps, and Nanoloop. I thought it would be fun to make comforting music from these noises, and you can jump to "The Roomba is Dreaming" to hear the end result. The discussion for this week is a demonstration of using envelope generators to smooth out the harsh tones of a firmware file. In particular, a trapezoid generator based on an EMS Synthi is used to pull out tonal rhythms. Last week's Boing Boing post on "Booting DOS from vinyl" reminded me of cassette drive loading. We had an Atari 400 and an 800, and both of those used cassettes to load many of their games. I used to love that noise, and I expect Atari filtered the sound of the cassettes themselves, otherwise risk injuring the ears of kids who put the cassettes (intended for a computer) into their walkman (it would still play, after all). So you'll learn about Zaxxon, Frogger, and my favorite Atari cassette-based game: Salmon Run. All of these sound files work to load data because a lot can be communicated in a tone. If you think about a phone dialer, it is twelve separate pitched notes (0-9, pound and asterix) – These tones are used for any number of aggravating automated systems when you call customer service lines, and they also connect your call. There are a few tones never intended for you to hear, however, including the 2600 hertz tone, which was a tone generated by a payphone when a call was concluded. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak unofficially began Apple Computers with a phone phreaking device called the Blue Box. It was a device that sent out a 2600 hertz tone to fake (or phake) the sound of a phone getting disconnected. The two callers would remain on the phone, however, allowing a free call without billing. So in our introduction this week I demonstrate the 2600 hertz tone using a wonderful iphone app called Phonal Tonal, which replicates a Blue Box, Green Box, and a Red Box.

The salmon are running right now around The Great Lakes region but the water levels are high! What do you do? Lee checks in with Dan Stewart of Chrome Seekers Sport Fishing to see how he attacks the high waters and how he is getting the salmon to still bite in these conditions. Lee just returned from a somewhat unsuccessful trip up north and the boys talk about what you can do to make sure you walk away with a cooler full of salmon. If you are thinking about going after these fish this time of year there is still plenty of time to cash in on the opportunity. Hopefully you can learn from Lee's mistakes and zero in on the bite as Lee and Dan talk their way through how they view the water and fish conditions. Dan also throws out a date for any who want to get involved with cleaning up the rivers one day in mid October and how we must keep our rivers free of trash before we lose our privileges!. It's up to us anglers!

'Til next time... Don't get bypassed, stay with the NOCLIP Podcast! Welcome to the fiftieth episode of NOCLIP. For the occasion, we're taking a deep dive back to our very first episode and talking about the sequel to that game, Splatoon 2. Nintendo has taken their squid-based competitive shooter property and updated it for a new audience on the much more popular Switch console. Despite many people claiming that the sequel isn't much more than an update, we take stock of the differences and the strengths and weaknesses they bring with them. We're going to be talking about how the game feels to play compared to the original, the glory of Salmon Run's design, and the trials and tribulations of being a try-hard idiot. Thank you for listening to the episode this week. While we were very excited to hit this fifty episode milestone, we haven't forgotten the season; so join us again next week as we talk about Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water for the Wii U!

Keeping up with Switch news is tough but this show fixes that by putting out frequent episodes and keeping them around 30 minutes each. The classic Nintendo sound effects are great too. Bonus points for RJS being transparent and open as a host. Podcasting solo isn’t easy and he does it with easy. If you’re a Nintendo fan, you should be listening, end of story.Jon sent in an emailHey hey!So my buddy came over this weekend for splat fest and we were chit chatting about Splatoon stuff. One of the conversations was about Salmon Run and playing it locally. We both love Salmon Run, and I love how you can get different things for playing Salmon Run (special shirts, hats etc.). My friend said "I wonder how and if the Salmon Run is different if you just play locally instead of playing online". Now the online Salmon Run, as we all know, is at certain times/days. Whereas the local Salmon Run you can do whenever. I just said, without really thinking, "It's probably the same thing, but I doubt you get rewards for playing it". He quickly came back with (snobby voice) "Why would anyone play Salmon Run if you don't get anything for it?"(I should also add that I really don't know how Salmon Run is different from online to local play; I didn't try it, but that’s not the point)This brings me to the main point of this email.I feel like we're getting more into this routine where online multiplayer games need to give you some sort of "rewards" for playing the game. I don't play many online competitive games, but thinking of games like Call of Duty or something, you level up your account, level up your weapons, etc. The game is always giving you something the more you play. You can unlock different mods for weapons, different gear or abilities. It's tough for me to think of an online multiplayer game that doesn't have a system like this. How important is it for new games to give you "something" the more you play?Would Salmon Run be as fun if there were no rewards for it? Are we moving into a new time where we don't just play games for "fun" anymore? Do we need something to make all our work feel like it's worth it?I'm curious to see where games go from here. I think it would be difficult for a new game to come out without some sort of level up system and unlockables. However, the main point of any game is to have fun and enjoy the time you invest into that game. When he said why would anyone play Salmon Run if you don't get anything for it, I wanted to slap him and say "Because it's fun!!!".Anyway, this sounded way better in my head. I hope you get the main point I'm going for. I'd love to hear your take on this. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thank your for all the entertainment.-Jon/Link31254NewsNintendo World Championships 2017!Any Controller possibly coming to Switch Sorry Joeseph
It is the dawn of a new day, and somehow - impossibly - I can communicate. Well, that is, I could *always* communicate, but now I can communicate with *them*. I can do more than just wag my tail excitedly when Daddy calls me a Good Girl, which is my true and only name. I can vocalize the songs I sing for Mommy when she comes home from... wherever it is she goes. And, more importantly still, I can politely - yet firmly - ask Daddy to remove the cover to my Brother's litter box, so that I may indulge in a taste of his poop. My name is Herbie, and I am, forevermore, a Good Girl. Discussed: Gentle construction sounds happening outside of Seth's apartment won't stop *this* train of podcastery. Todd's been revisiting Nioh and talks about the way the game handles difficulty. Seth admires Pyre in further detail. Overwatch's Doomfist and Splatoon 2's Salmon Run are laid bare before The Boyz. In a new segment, we go through some of the headlines we care to talk about. Dreams are weird. Pets are very good. This week we play the highly anticipated game Pyre from Supergiant Games. Pyre is from the creators of Bastion and Transistor. In Pyre, you play through an original story in which the choices you make impact the direction and can actually take the story it totally different directions. They also created their own sport in this game...seriously. We also have a follow up to Splatoon 2 where we talk more on the other modes such as Salmon Run as well as a look at the progression system now that we've played it more. In our gaming news, we have several upcoming releases and our free games of the month for August including Just Cause 3! We talk about Niantic getting sued for their failed Fest, Nintendo Switch selling like hotcakes, Dragon Quest and a huge Super Mario 64 speed run. Finally, with only 5 months left in the year we go through our top 5 most anticipated games to end the year. Everyone has some different titles and it's interesting to see why we chose the titles we did. There are a ton of games coming out in this second half of the year so a lot will be competing for the attention of casual gamers like ourselves.
