Événement organisé dans le cadre des festivités entourant les 120 ans de la a Faculté Solvay Brussels School of Economics.

Au lendemain de la crise Covid, l'Europe a mis sur pied un plan ambitieux de relance. Mais qu'est-ce que c'est exactement un plan de relance (pour la Belgique, il est plus précisément appelé plan de reprise et de résilience) ? Et comment l'aligner avec les objectifs de transition. C'est le sujet de mon entretien avec le Secrétaire d'Etat Thomas Dermine.  Thomas Dermine est un économiste et homme politique belge membre du Parti socialiste. Il est diplômé ingénieur de gestion de la Solvay Brussels School. Il poursuit ensuite son parcours académique à l'Université de Harvard à Boston où il obtient un master en politiques publiques. De 2009 à 2016, Thomas Dermine travaille comme consultant pour McKinsey & Company et rejoint en 2016 l'incubateur Kamet Ventures à Londres pour travailler sur des projets d'innovation technologique.  Dès 2017, Thomas Dermine revient en Belgique (et plus précisément à Charleroi) pour travailler sur le plan Catch, visant à accélérer la création d'emplois dans la région de Charleroi à la suite de plusieurs restructurations industrielles. À la suite de cet engagement, il est lauréat du prix Bologne-Lemaire en tant que "Wallon de l'année 2018", décerné par l'Institut Jules Destrée. Et devient, en 2019, le directeur de l'institut Emile Vandervelde, le Centre d'études du Parti socialiste belge.  Depuis le 1er octobre 2020, il est membre du gouvernement belge en qualité de Secrétaire d'État pour la Relance et les Investissements stratégiques, et chargé de la Politique scientifique. C'est un entretien particulier à plus d'un titre: tout d'abord parce qu'il est difficile de pouvoir mobiliser un membre du gouvernement pour la durée usuelle de mes entretiens et ce podcast est donc beaucoup plus court. Mais en plus, c'est un entretien qui m'a été suggéré par des étudiants qui ont eux-mêmes contacté M. Dermine.  Je me suis donc rendu à son cabinet accompagné par les deux étudiants, ce qui n'a pas du tout perturbé le secrétaire d'État. Michel Detheux is the co-founder, President, and CEO of iTeos Therapeutics, and has held the role of CEO since the company's inception in 2012. Pablo: Bonjour, Fabian.   Fabian: Bonjour, Pablo.   Sud Radio, la minute du COACH !    Pablo: Minute du Coach centrée sur la communication : “La seule question à se poser pour réussir à prendre la parole en public.” Quelle est-elle ?   Fabian: Oui, Pablo, parce que la prise de parole en public, ça occasionne en général beaucoup de stress… C'est l'une des phobies les plus répandues au monde, la deuxième phobie, paraît-il, la glossophobie, et nous sommes tous amenés, tôt ou tard, à prendre la parole en public. Ce n'est pas le privilège des chefs d'entreprise ou des hommes politiques qui, chacun d'entre nous est amené, à un moment ou un autre, à prendre la parole en public. Et il y a quelques années, je donnais cours à la Solvay Brussels School, je donne toujours cours, mais ce jour-là spécifiquement, il m'est arrivé deux anecdotes intéressantes que je vais vous raconter maintenant. Bruxelles, moi je viens de la campagne, qui ne te veut pas le matin, j'étais obligé de partir très, très tôt, et d'arriver à Solvay, alors que Bruxelles était encore endormie, si je partais une demi-heure plus tard, j'avais deux heures d'embouteillage dans la rue, donc je partais très, très tôt, j'arrivais à 6h20 devant l'université, et ma formation n'était qu'à 9 heures. Donc je restais dans ma voiture, sous mon sac de couchage, et je redormais si possible, ou je faisais de la méditation, en attendant que mon cours ait lieu. Et quelques jours plus tôt, l'un de mes copains, on peut dire un ami, mais un copain m'a dit : “Ah, Fabian, j'ai besoin de ton aide ! Je vais bientôt donner une conférence devant 180 personnes. J'ai très peur ! Je n'ai jamais fait ça de ma vie ! Est-ce que tu peux m'aider ?” Je dis : “Si tu veux, tel jour, je vais à Solvay.  J'y vais tôt, notamment pour me garer, tellement il y a peu de places de parking...Tu viens me chercher, parce que moi, une fois que ma voiture est garée, je ne bouge plus de là. Tu viens me chercher, on va chez toi, je te coache. Tu me ramènes pour 9 heures, heure du début de mon cours.” “D'accord, on fait ça !”. Le gars, super enthousiaste. Il vient me chercher, on va chez lui, je m'installe dans son canapé. Il dit une phrase, et puis il s'arrête : “C'est pas possible ! On se connaît trop bien ! Je me sens jugé !” Fin de la séance de coaching. Il me ramène à ma voiture, je vais donner mon cours, et c'était un cours précisément axé sur la vente, et notamment la vente face à un public. L'une de mes étudiantes se présente face au groupe, face à moi, elle prend la parole, et à la fin de son exposé, elle me dit : “Ça ne va pas.” “Je ne vous connais pas. Je me sens jugée.” Je me dis : “Mais mince, ils se sont donné le mot.” L'un me dit : “Je te connais trop bien ! Je me sens jugé !” L'autre : “Je ne vous connais pas. Je me sens jugée.” Et je me suis aperçu qu'ils se posaient la mauvaise question, l'un et l'autre. Chacun se posait une question relative à soi : “Comment ne pas être ridicule face à Fabian ?” “Comment briller devant mon professeur ?” Et ce n'était pas la bonne question. La seule vraie bonne question à se poser eût été : “Comment puis-je aider l'auditoire, le public ?” “Comment puis-je contribuer...”, et pas : “Quel regard vont-ils poser sur moi ?” Car à partir du moment où je me demande le regard que l'autre va poser sur moi, je deviens soudain engoncé dans mon corps presque pétrifié, et c'est la raison pour laquelle j'invite chacun un renversement paradigme : c'est moi qui regarde l'autre, et pas l'autre qui me regarde, et moi qui me demande comment je peux contribuer à l'élever. His arguments are developed in the light of an assessment of the online platform economy and of the recent landmark European Commission regulatory proposals such as the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act. About the Speaker: Bruno Liebhaberg is the Director General of the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), a European think tank founded in 2010 at his initiative. Bruno Liebhaberg is currently also Chair of the EU Observatory on the Online Platform Economy, which was established to advise the European Commission on policymaking. He was Professor at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), from 1979 to 2018. He previously worked as a trade official in the European Commission and as an advisor to the former European Commission President Jacques Delors.

Do Investors Care About Odious Debts? The Tsarist Russian government used borrowed funds to repress domestic political movements. Vichy France borrowed while collaborating with the Nazis. King Leopold used borrowed funds to engage in horrific exploitation and repression in the Congo Free State, and these debts were later assumed by Belgium. There are nearly endless examples of truly odious sovereign debts. Do investors care about any of this? And if so, why? A group of international students at Solvay Brussels School have launched a campaign calling for an improvement to how the Erasmus study programme is administered. The group's research found the majority of Erasmus students do not formally register as residents in their host country, making it difficult for them to go about their day-to-day lives and become integrated. Three of the group's members, Julian, Marco and Ivette, explain what can be done to make life easier for Erasmus students on their placements abroad.
