James Stephenson is a pioneer in holistic athlete development, where elite performance and human wellbeing are inseparable. A two-sport international athlete for Great Britain, Olympic coach, and ordained Anglican minister, James brings a rare blend of high-performance experience, spiritual depth, and social impact to his work in sport. For nearly a decade, James has lived with his family on the Zambian/DRC border, using sport as a vehicle for community empowerment, identity, and healing. His mission goes beyond medals—he's focused on the deeper purpose of sport: to elevate lives, foster connection, and unlock human potential. James believes coaching is less about imposing frameworks and more about holding space—helping athletes explore who they are, what they value, and how sport can serve their growth beyond performance. He champions emotional intelligence, positive language, and values-based development as the new frontier of excellence in sport. This week, James shares his journey from elite competition to global impact, the power of asking better questions, and why true success means aligning with your soul. If you've ever felt the tension between chasing results and living fully—this conversation is your permission to reimagine what's possible. Talking Points: Why elite sport must evolve from performance obsession to purpose orientation What indigenous cultures can teach us about community, wisdom, and wellbeing The difference between a career built on knowledge and a life rooted in wisdom How validating values like love, connection, and joy transforms athletes Coaching as holding space—not solving, but listening deeply Reclaiming sport's true essence: self-actualization, not just achievement The power of language in shaping athlete identity and internal dialogue How wellbeing and spiritual fulfillment can elevate—not detract from—performance Creating freedom for athletes to explore who they are, not just what they do If you enjoy this episode please leave a review on iTunes or Spotify platforms, and by doing this you will actively help in spreading this content to the practitioners that need it. What happens when administration gets in the way of doing your job? Not just how you do your job, but eviscerates the very core of what you're there to do… On one of his teaching jobs Andy Browne, (Julie's dad), was thwarted from his life's mission of passing on his values of curiosity, learning and growth. The administration treated students more as criminals than young learners, with futures full of options for them to delight in, discover and explore. After just one year, this environment “crumpled” Andy, so much so that an acquaintance didn't recognize him. Listen to this episode to learn what one version of moral injury looks like. Talking Points: Why grades don't equal learning. What NOT teaching to the test looks like. The internal attitude you need to keep an open mind. What thinking outside the box about learning accommodations looks like. The benefits of school field trips. What type of mindset creates innovative thinking? The importance of maintaining high ethical standards. What to expect when your values don't jive with your work environment. The importance of giving everyone their fair chance. The indignity of being treated like a criminal. The magic of respecting others. The benefits of cultivating and encouraging personal agency. Bio Andy Browne taught high school biology and natural history for over three decades in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two of his grandfathers taught engineering at Stanford, so he fell a bit short of his original vision for himself. But this didn't dampen his enthusiasm for teaching, which is still behind almost every conversation he has. Now at age 94, his current employer REI, pays him to talk to customers and employees alike, about anything. Andy's a lifelong nature enthusiast and now instead of leading trips, others invite him. Besides conversation, backpacking and photography, he enjoys reading, napping, making others feel valued and fixing things. A common lunch menu is two pieces of toast — one with butter and cinnamon sugar, the other with melted cheese. For Christmas parties, people await his persimmon puddings. Guest Info. In this episode, my guest Danielle LaPorte  and I will be discussing a few interesting topics. Talking Points: Why rest is important to be effective? How can we shrug off criticism? What is ego; how can we tame it? What to do if we want something to leave behind, to let go, but we are unable to do it? How can we review our past, and use it to plan our future? What's “courage” according to you? How can we tell if we are making a wise decision in critical moments of our life? What's “compassion” and how we can tap into its power? What's the easiest way to heal our strained relationships? Guest Danielle LaPorte @daniellelaporte I write and speak about the intelligence of Love. Some career details: I used to run a future studies think tank in Washington-DC, and my own publicity agency. I never went to university, I got rejected from art school, and I was fired from a business that I co-founded. When I was little, I wanted to be a “social worker, disco dancer, and a poet.” I think I've managed to pull that off. I'm the creator of The Heart Centered Membership and The Desire Map book + planner system. There are 400+ Desire Map Facilitators in 23 countries. Desire Map as a “brand” is evolving into a Heart Centered Facilitating curriculum—our first cadre of trained facilitators will be of service in the summer of 2021. I'm a member of Oprah's Super Soul 100. Over 5 million people a month visit DanielleLaPorte.com, which Forbes named one of the “Top 100 Websites for Women”. My podcast, With Love, Danielle ranks in iTunes' Top 10 for wellness. I'm honoured that Marianne Williamson has referred to me, “as a bright light in the modern priestesshood.” And one of my other heroines, V (formerly known as Eve Ensler) called me “a force field of energy, wonder, humour, and love.” Thank you. I co-create all of my meditation decks and the Heart Centered Membership with a beloved esoteric practitioner of many spiritual traditions, V. S. Offering these practices is one of the greatest blessings of my life… along with working with a wonderful team, living in Vancouver, Canada; and being the mother of my teenage son. In today’s episode, we are talking all about Kirsten and the little vacation she took. Well, not necessarily a vacation but time away from clients to learn more about software development.
