President Donald Trump has signed a wide range of executive orders since taking office on Monday. Some of those orders are already drawing lawsuits and criticism from cities, states and advocacy groups. Anthony Michael Kreis, a constitutional law professor at Georgia State University, returns to “Closer Look” to explain Trump’s executive orders, policy proposals and their potential implications. Plus, according to the Migration Policy Institute, roughly 98,000 undocumented students nationwide graduate from high school each year in the U.S. About 3,000 of which are from Georgia. However, data also suggests undocumented students face barriers and challenges when it comes to attending college. In an effort to help, TheDream.U.S. offers scholarships, and students can apply now. Dr. Hyein Lee, the COO of TheDream.US, talks more about the history and mission of her organization and its scholarship opportunities. Lastly, a new Georgia Tech and Stanford study shows automatic speech recognition (ASR) models, used in voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, may not be as accurate when transcribing English speakers with a minority dialect. However, the study found the transcription of Standard American English (SAE) "significantly outperformed" three dialects: Spanglish, Chicano English and African American Vernacular English. Camille Harris, PhD candidate in computer science at Georgia Institute of Technology, and lead author of the study, discusses some of the key findings from her study. According to Pew Research In the last few decades, Hispanic enrollment at postsecondary institutions in the U.S. has seen an exponential increase. Rising from 1.5 million in 2000 to a new high of 3.8 million in 2019 - partly reflecting the rapid growth of Hispanics as a share of the overall U.S. population. However, despite this boom in enrollment, the obstacle of affordability still remains. Furthermore, a report by TheDream.US and Golden Door Scholars shows their graduates have a 94 percent workforce participation rate, compared to the 84 percent rate for college graduates nationally. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok debuted her new play, Sanctuary City, Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in the fall of 2021. The drama follows B and G, two best friends, both undocumented immigrants. After 9/11, B's mom decides to return to her country of origin, but the U.S. is the only home B has ever known. As he decides whether to stay or leave, G might be able to offer him a solution. How much are they each willing to sacrifice? Sanctuary City puts U.S. immigration policy and the people it affects under a microscope and humanizes the stories behind the legalese. Host Ruthie Fierberg, along with Majok and experts Katherine Benton-Cohen (Author Inventing the Immigration Problem: The Dillingham Commission & Its Legacy), Carolina Canizales (Immigration Legal Resource Center), and Christian Pinochet-Paul (Presidents' Alliance) discuss the evolution of immigration policy in the United States to present day, potential reforms to make policies more humane, where immigrants can find support, and more. The private sector is stepping up to help young immigrant Dreamers while Congress continues to debate their future. Few Americans have done more than Donald Graham, the chairman of the board of Graham Holdings Company and former publisher of the Washington Post. Mr. Graham cofounded TheDream.US to fund college scholarships for hundreds of Dreamers, and he recently received significant donations to expand the program to thousands more. Graham will discuss the success of his initiative, his future plans, and his views on immigration policy and philanthropy. Marisela Tobar and Sadhana Singh, two Dreamers who graduated from Trinity Washington University this year after receiving scholarships from his foundation, will share their perspectives on how his program changed their lives, their hopes for the future, and what barriers they still face to attaining the American dream. Since 2012, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has provided a two-year renewable reprieve from deportation and eligibility for work authorization to more than 750,000 unauthorized immigrants brought to the United States as children. Known as Dreamers, many are studying at U.S. colleges and universities or working legally in jobs throughout the U.S. labor market, and what will happen to these individuals is unclear as Donald Trump takes office. On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump pledged to terminate DACA on day one of his presidency. Since then, he has said he would “work something out” because Dreamers have worked and attended school in the United States but face an uncertain future. Meanwhile, leaders in a number of sectors have mobilized strong opposition to a possible rollback. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers from both parties have reintroduced the Bar Removal of Individuals who Dream and Grow our Economy (BRIDGE) Act to maintain protection from deportation and work authorization to DACA recipients. In communities across the United States, officials are declaring or reaffirming their intent to limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. In higher education, administrators are declaring their campuses will be sanctuaries for students who may fear immigration enforcement. As the Trump administration assumes office and the impacts of rescinding DACA are under review, MPI hosts a discussion with University of California President Janet Napolitano; Donald Graham, former Chairman of The Washington Post Co. and cofounder of TheDream.Us, which is funding scholarships for thousands of unauthorized immigrant students; and Ike Brannon, Visiting Senior Fellow at the CATO Institute, and author of the just released study “The Economic and Fiscal Impact of Repealing DACA.”
Armond & Doc return this week to talk about everything from Kanye visiting Trump to Lupe's "retirement" before discussing new projects from The-Dream and Ab-Soul. Is Ab-Soul deep or fake deep? Is The-Dream making good music? Does it matter that Kanye visited Trump? Oh yeah, Armond & Doc also do a live listen to a song they want to make fun of, and end up liking.
Armond & Doc return to go in-depth on the 2017 Grammy Nominations before discussing J Cole's "False Prophets" and all of the issues it brings up - is Cole right about Kanye? Is Cole the right person to bring this up? Is it even a good song? All that plus Doc visits MSG for the first time, a random digression about The-Dream, and a lot more.
