It tries to just provide information so that everyone who's engaged in those discussions can operate off a common platform of knowledge and understanding.” – Brian Kuehl Topics covered include: An introduction to Kuehl and his work. The DAN Annual Reports for 2021 and 2022 are due to be released in 2 - 4 months. Sea turtle nests in the US are breaking records but climate change is still a major threat. Florida, North Caroline, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia all reported increases but high tides, floods, sea level rise, hurricanes and hotter sand and water are taking a toll. PBS Nature recently premiered a new series "Spy in the Ocean". The four episodes incorporate underwater video shot by marine-life shaped animatronics puppets. Dr. Alex Brylske has a new online course - The Sustainable Dive Leader in cooperation with the Ocean First Institute. Commentary Do Black Friday and Small Business Saturday matter to small local dive shops. While many people like to go out shopping on these two days, many are content to stay home and make their purchase online. Small dive shops also face direct competition from their suppliers who offer deals at deep discounts. These deep discounts make it very challenging for your local dive shop to compete. The latest research by the Cline Group shows that there are only 851 true brick and mortar dive shops in the US. What will that number be like a year from now or maybe three years from now. I suspect it will continue to shrink. The DIVE BOAT act stands for Don't Imperil Vessel Employees, Business Owners and Tourism. This act is in response to the Small Passenger Vessel Act (SPVA) that was passed last year as part of the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act. The SPVA specifically targeted dive boats both day boats and liveaboards as a result of the Conception disaster. The cruise ship industry is excluded as is the entire fishing industry. This new law removes the limits of liability from dive boats as well as allows claims to be made for up to two years. The result are astronomical increases in insurance rates. The DIVE BOAT act is a bill that tries to change the SPVA. It looks to lower the exposure limits on liveaboards to one year and for day dive boats revert back to prior limits.  Support the DIVE BOAT act by reaching out to your federal representatives.

The Context of White Supremacy Welcomes Phoebe Zerwick. Classified as a White Woman, Zerwick “is an award-winning investigative journalist, narrative writer, and college professor. Her writing has appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine; National Geographic; The Nation; the Winston-Salem Journal; and Glamour, among other publications.” She learned about the conviction of privileged black male Darryl Hunt when she moved to “The Tar Heel State” to launch her journalism career. Over decades, she got to know the case and Mr. Hunt's turmoil well enough to pen a book, Beyond Innocence: The Life Sentence of Darryl Hunt. The case if tragically familiar: black male accused of raping and killing a White Woman, Deborah Sykes. To make things worse, Hunt was engaged in consensual sexual activity with an underaged White Woman at the time of Sykes murder. Zerwick briefly compares Hunt's case to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, but can only note the racial divide caused by the hearings. The similarities and connections between these two cases are so enormous, Gus can only process this as an egregious error or a willful (perhaps, Racist) omission. The late Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. and F. Lee Bailey made a pilgrimage to Winston, Salem, North Caroline in the middle of the “trial of the century” in to secure “the Fuhrman Tapes.” These recordings captured a White enforcement official bragging about fabricating evidence to convict niggras. Fuhrman had particular sadistic rage for black males involved with White Women - like “The Juice” and Mr. Darryl Hunt. Unlike the Simpson case, Hunt spent many years in prison before police misconduct was revealed. Even after being released, he eventually committed suicide as a result of PTSD from his unjust incarceration. #BlackMisandry #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

As the Supreme Court debates whether to end affirmative action, concerns about the power of implicit racial bias to shape who gets ahead in America are as salient as ever. But what do we know about the extent and power of this racism to drive voting decisions? Is there a scientific way to measure it?In a new paper “Disfavor or Favor? Assessing the Valence of White Americans' Racial Attitudes” political scientist Tim Ryan provides a new framework for how perceived racial attitudes line up with voting. It takes on the faults of our existing racial bias literature and provides striking evidence about how to characterize white American's racial attitudes. Ryan is a professor at The University of North Caroline at Chapel Hill. Christina Collette was born on the Air Force base in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She is a third generation native to Colorado and graduated from Beer Creek High School in Lakewood. In high school, she participated in FLBA but excelled in Auto Shop as well as Wood Working. Throughout her high school experience, she managed a Rite Aid store and once she turned 18, she moved into the Banking sector and focused her college studies on Law and Accounting. However, after 4 years in Banking, she quickly realized that both school and finance were not where she wanted to be. Banking did not bring out her passion and did not excite her. However, memories from high school of turning wrenches and working on cars in the auto shop along building and creating things with her hands in wood working continually captured her attention. So, she decided to change her career path. She took a risk and walked away from banking and got her first job with a manufacturing company. She started as a receptionist and within 9 months, became an estimating manager. From there, she became head of customer service and eventually was promoted to move out to North Caroline to help open and manage a new manufacturing facility. Throughout this experience, Christina realized that she had found her career pathway that not only allowed her to grow as a professional but also fed her passion. From there, she managed an aerospace company giving her the opportunity to work with original equipment manufacturers such as Lockheed Martin and SpaceX. Within this role, Christina was able to help engineer new products and increase customer efficiencies while greatly reducing their scrap. During this time, one of Christina's customers was Reata Engineering. Having already worked with Reata and knowing their reputation, when a job opening presented itself she took advantage of the opportunity and she applied. Christina's story in unique in that with each company she worked for, she began in an entry level position, and rose to General Manager or Director. Democratic strategists and operatives in North Caroline are worried that the national party is ignoring the race for US Senate here, and will miss an opportunity to flip a winnable seat. From The Hill: North Carolina Democrats are pleading for outside groups to funnel more money into the state's hotly contested Senate race, believing that it may offer the party one of its best shots at flipping a GOP-held seat in November.  Polling averages in North Carolina show Rep. Ted Budd (R) and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley (D) deadlocked in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Burr (R). At the same time, Beasley has maintained a yawning cash advantage over Budd.  Yet strategists and political operatives lament that the race has largely flown under the radar for national Democrats and are warning against squandering an opportunity in a state that has repeatedly proven competitive — yet ultimately elusive — for the party in recent years.     Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kenny knew he was gay pretty much all his life, and has lived in Fayetteville, North Caroline, and then Raleigh North Carolina for the last 11 years. He talks to us about what his experience has been being gay in the South, especially given that a lot of the rest of the US considers the South a lost cause from a gay rights standpoint. When he first came out at the beginning of high school, the first people he came out to were his nerd friends on Gaia Online, an online community for anime fans where you could dress up your avatar with accessories from your favorite anime series. He describes this as a very common experience when you're queer in a more conservative area, because when you're gay it can feel like you're the only one, and online you have access to so many more people who are like you. We also get into the conversation around the North's perception that the South is so much more homophobic and racist than the North, to the degree that a lot of Black friends Deondre' has talked to in the North literally try to avoid going to the South because they are afraid they are going to get hate crimed in some way. However, there is racism and homophobia in all parts of the US and at least in Deondre's experience, the South can actually feel even more comfortable because the majority of Black people in the US do live in the South and he feels more comfortable in spaces where there are more people of color, as opposed to a lot of the places he has travelled to in the North where he is the only Black person in the room or on the block. Obviously the comparison of racism and homophobia is very apples to oranges in a lot of ways, but we get into the ways in which they manifest differently, and Kenny talks about a specific instance that highlighted the real importance of intersectionality to him. There's a huge frustration with progressives who say that they believe in gay rights or anti-racism but then essentially tell people in the South "What did you expect? You live in the South! Just leave." because that's exactly what the conservatives in the South want, is for the gay people to all move to more progressive places and get out of their hair. And a lot of the places in the world that have implemented progressive policies, like the Scandinavian countries, were only able to do that because they are very ethnically homogenous and those progressive policies are about to be tested as we have more and more climate refugees. The bottom line is that any progressives who believe in either anti-racism or gay rights would be remiss to dismiss the South as a lost cause, just because the South votes more conservatively. You'll also hear some stories about petty times we have either fucked with someone's life (such as putting oreos on a nemesis' windshield), inadvertently fucked with our own life (Deondre' had someone accidentally leave raw salmon in his microwave in college and they couldn't find it for weeks), or would hypothetically fuck with someone else's life (such as by putting sugar in someone's gas tank, which then caramelizes and totals the car). This was a long conversation so tune in next week to hear Part 2! Links: When Deondre' is talking about his story about the raw salmon in the microwave, we mention a "Dolly Zoom" and if you aren't familiar with this term, you can watch this quick YouTube video explaining the concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5JBlwlnJX0 Kenny's website: http://kwical.com/ Kenny's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/okaykennyray/ Music is The Beauty of Maths by Meydän. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/im-the-villain/support

Welcome back, listeners! It's Season 4 of Owning Up!  First, we are grateful for YOU, our listeners, partners, and sponsors.  Now, let's jump right in! This season, Moni wanted to bring on guests who influence the community and are dreamers, makers, doers, believers, bold and bravely creating the career of their dreams. This podcast is here to support military spouse business owners. Our guest this week is Lacey Langford - veteran, military spouse, financial coach, and speaker. Lacey grew up as an army brat and then joined the air force, where she met her husband. After getting out of the military, she realized that she wanted a PCS-proof career. So she went back to school for her finance degree but struggled to reach her full earning potential and decided to start her own business.  Some takeaways from this episode:  Lacey realized she was tired of volunteering but is so glad she did because she believes volunteering allows you to learn and grow in areas where you aren't the greatest. You can fail, and it's okay.  Your business is your imaginary friend. No one gets it at the beginning. It's only you. You're trying to get others on board with something when it's starting. You have to build your confidence. If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will.  You need to understand every component of your business, even if you're not going to be the one to do it. It allows you to know all the ins and outs of your business.  She realized that she could reach more people with a podcast and write her blog, so she did!  Ignore the people who criticize you. They aren't going to be there for you or support you. Finances in the military don't have to be a scary topic. Don't beat yourself up with your finances wherever you are in life. But, spend more than you make and save and invest for the future. That's the core to financial freedom.  Save for emergencies and opportunities. Unfortunately, most people only save for emergencies.  Take things as they come and know you need to make money.  Start your business even if you're not an expert yet. Just start! You can't be an expert until you start and get going.  Entrepreneurs can get a 401K. So start planning for your 80-year-old self now.  If you're a milspouse with a business or are thinking of starting one, join us here at AMSE Membership. Check out other episodes, and we will see you all next week! Follow Lacey on LinkedIn or visit her website today! Listen to Lacey's podcast - Military Money Show on your favorite podcast platform. Anthony Meyers is Pastor for Community Development at The Crossing Church in Chesterfield, Missouri.  In that role, he oversees strategic partnerships and leadership development in the greater St. Louis region.  Prior to arriving in St. Louis, he served as executive pastor at Element Church in Wentzville, Missouri, and Vice President of Texas College in Tyler, Texas. Pastor Meyers holds a B.S. from Saint Augustine's College and a master's degree in education from Jacksonville State University. What is Anthony's point? (0:48) Anthony thinks we go through life always trying to figure that out. We are always asking what's the point, what's the point of life, what are we supposed to be doing or what is an accomplishment etc.  He states that if we are not careful we fall into the trap of following other people's dreams, visions or ideas. We start believing that that is what we are supposed to be doing and that that is the next natural progression for us.  Once you get to the end of someone else's dream, most often people find they did not do it. Anthony calls this ‘chasing the bass' and he says that this bass has a voracious appetite and you keep feeding the beast by chasing it.  Whether you are chasing money, stature or a career path, and you get there and you realize that it is not as great as it seemed. Eventually, you ask yourself again, what's the point? Why am I doing this?  Anthony believes it is important to try and figure it out. Once you know what the point is, you figure out what your purpose in life is and you realize that you have certain gifts and habits that fold into that. And that is when you start to live your best life.  What does Anthony see when people are led down a path by someone else and they are resistant to that path, but they feel compelled by parents or role models? (3:50) We live in a society where people are put in boxes and you have to fit in those boxes. Most people are forced into the box and after a while, they start to question if they actually fit and why they need to be in the box.  A lot of people get stuck on the idea that the box is where they have to fit because it is the box that they have been put in. They think because they're good at maths, you have to be a doctor or an engineer or even an accountant.  Anthony believes people are forced onto life paths too early and they get stuck in them because it is what society expects. Anthony speaks on his own daughters and how when you have kids, you constantly worry if you are leading them in the right direction. You wonder what traits you are giving them. Anthony tells parents that the job they have is to train their children in such a way that when they leave the house they are a whole human being, able to sustain themselves and so Anthony realized he had to think differently. He asked himself, is he empowering them? Is he providing a way for them to think critically about life and make decisions? Anthony spends a lot of his time trying to guide parents into healthy ways to raise their children.  How did Anthony go from being a police officer to a pastor? (12:17) Anthony was an unintentional officer. Both of his parents were accountants and they had wanted him to be an accountant too. He used to watch his parents do accounting and he thought to himself that he really did not want to do that.  He went to school and made the dean's list in freshman and sophomore year in accounting and business and he hated it. He almost dropped out of school before his parents told him to choose a different major.  He ended up picking criminal justice. He loved it but he was not sure about what was next. Anthony's aunt was the campaign manager for the sheriff of North Caroline and so the sheriff would be at Anthony's house every once in a while.  One morning during Anthony's senior year, the sheriff had asked him what he was going to do after graduation. When Anthony did not give him an answer he had said he will go work for him.  While Anthony enjoyed his career as an officer, he found that within himself that this was not the path he is supposed to follow. But even now, as a pastor and speaker, Anthony mentors a lot of officers because he understands what it means to be an officer.  The Crossing Church The Crossing is not so much about a place but more about the people God has set on dynamic pilgrimage, reaching out and crossing paths, borders, divides and gaps everywhere. They trust that it is the Cross of Jesus Christ that inspires and impacts lives everywhere…until that day when they will see Jesus return in all His Glory!  Resources Connect with Anthony: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter The Crossing Church: Website Book Release - January 2021 Minutes Matter When Living An Intentional Life  Bill Ellis bill@brandingpillars.com bill@brandingforresults.com +1 314-807-0923 www.brandingpillars.com www.brandingforresults.com Connect with Bill on LinkedIn Connect with Bill on Facebook Bill's Instagram: @wcellis See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I have the privilege of airing the interview that I did with André and Kayleon Elliott about their experience with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). September is NICU awareness month and the Elliott’s story is a great one to share during this time. André and Kayleon live just outside of Charlotte, North Caroline with their little girl, Ariah. They both have a background in Ministry and Kayleon is the founder of By Grace Not Perfection. In today’s show, André and Kayleon share their story about having their baby prematurely and spending her first 45 days of her life in the NICU. The goal of our conversation is to bring awareness and advocate for NICU parents. Lets jump into the interview: In this episode we discuss: Kayleon shares about Ariah’s birth storyThe Elliott’s experience in the NICU How they got into NICU advocacyKayleon has created:NICU Keepsake JournalNICU Moms PlannerHow to get in touch with André and Kayleon: Two Hosts are Better website: https://www.twohostsarebetter.com/Two Hosts are Better podcast: https://www.twohostsarebetter.com/podcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/twohostsarebetter/https://www.instagram.com/bgnpllc/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bgnpllcThank you so much for listening to the show today. This conversation was particularly impactful for me because my middle sister, Lauren, was born prematurely and with a complication that required surgery and a month long stay in the NICU. I was only 4 years old when she was born, but I remember it being a very scary and stressful time for my family. I’m so glad that the Elliotts are doing the work that they are for NICU advocacy. Dennis Manarchy was raised in Rockford, Illinois. He grew a love for photography at an early age and won a scholarship to Rochester Institute of Technology. Upon graduation he was fortunate to serve an apprenticeship for legendary photographer, Irving Penn. It was a highly disciplined and uncompromising environment. Penn became simultaneously a mentor due to his amazing talent and meticulous nature, and a nemesis because it took years for Dennis to break from his influence and develop his own style. Dennis was drafted in the army in 1968. After serving as Lieutenant in the Vietnam War, he returned home disillusioned. He met a Lumbee Indian chief in a North Caroline bookstore, and after sharing his story he was invited to move in with the Tribe. Dennis spent 6 months readjusting while immersing himself in their daily life. It was a pivotal experience. http://www.manarchy.com/ http://butterfliesandbuffalo.com/dennis-manarchy/ www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

Summary of today's show: The Xaverian Missionary Fathers serve Christ in the missions in African and Asia, as well as at the Fatima Shrine in Holliston in the Archdiocese of Boston. Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor talk with Fr. Rocco Puopolo and Fr. Joseph Matteucig about their service in the Xaverian Missionaries in both Sierra Leone and Taiwan, as well as the initiatives they are undertaking in this country to connect American youth with their counterparts elsewhere. Listen to the show: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor Today's guest(s): Fr. Rocco Puopolo and Fr Joseph Matteucig Links from today's show: [St. Guido Maria Conforti]: http://www.guidoconforti.com/ [Xaverian Missionaries USA]: http://www.xaviermissionaries.org/ Today's topics: Xaverian Missionary Fathers 1st segment: Scot and Fr. Chris talked about the celebrations at the end of seminary year. The seminary years ends on May 18. They had a deacons night the other night in which they salute, toast, and roast the deacon class who is going to be ordained. There are 13 resident and 3 or 4 religious community seminarians, about 17 total. They had Fr. Jason Jalbert of the Manchester diocese came to give a talk about priesthood. Scot pointed out that the 17 are from 4 dioceses and several religious orders. Fr. Chris said the two happiest days in the seminary are opening day and ordination day. The other celebration at the seminary was for Bishop Arthur Kennedy who is ending his service as rector at St. John Seminary. Fr. Chris said they commemorated Bishop Kennedy's distinguished service. 2nd segment: Scot and Fr. Chris welcome Fr. Joe and Fr. Rocco from the Xaverian Missionary community. Scot said there are 45 men's religious communities in the Archdiocese and those in the metro west region are probably familiar with them. Fr. Rocco said they were found in 1895 by a young diocesan priest in Parma, Italy. He was unable to be a missionary and later became a bishop and archbishop. He founded the order under the patronage of St. Francis Xavier. He noted they are not related to the Xaverian Brothers order that runs Xaverian high school in Westwood. The Xaverians came to Holliston in 1947 after the war. His mother and grandmother assisted with the community from those early days. He became a Xaverian in order to become a missionary in Asia. He was ordained in 1977 at St. Catherine of Siena in Norwood and was sent to Africa. Fr. Joe said he is from northern Italy in the town of Udina, near what used to be Yugoslavia. He entered the Xaverians in Italy and was sent to Chicago for seminary. There was a Xaverian community just a short ride from his home in Italy. He entered while he was still in high school because he felt a strong attract not the community. Fr. Chris asked about St. Francis Xavier. Fr. Joe said he could be described with zeal, a passion for Christ, and enthused, because he wanted to share the Gospel with everyone. Francis did not start as a saint, but loved to fight and party, but when he encountered St. Ignatius of Loyola, he left his old ways and became one of the first Jesuits. Francis Died before getting to China and so the founder of the Xaverian Missionaries wanted them to complete his mission to China. The founder is St. Guido Conforti. He was born in 1865 and died in 1931. As a seminarian, he conceived of the seminary. He started the community as a vice-rector of the seminary. He sent out the first seminaries in 1899. In 1901, he became Archbishop of Ravenna, but he was only there a few years when he got very ill. He went back to Parma to die, but regained his health. He became coadjutor of Parma and then bishop until he died. He made one trip to visit his missionaries in China in 1928 and died in 1931. Fr. Joe said Guido wasn't well known in northern Italy until recently. Fr. Chris noted he was just made a saint last October. Fr. Joe said what made him special was that he said the Xaverian Missionaries have the gift of living faith which challenges him to see God, seek God, and love God in all. Also, Guido had a dream to make the whole world one single family and we as Jesus' disciples have to fulfill that dream. He also wanted them to be religious and missionaries. Other missionary orders do not take religious vows. They take four vows: poverty, chastity, obedience, and the missions. Fr. Rocco said he was a pastor of souls locally and a missionary globally. He was committed to helping save souls worldwide. Scot asked Fr. Rocco about the Holliston shrine. Fr. Rocco said the property used to have a high school seminary on it. Since they didn't have parishes in this region, they wanted property to help people know they were here, It's a Fatima shrine, because the message of Fatima is a missionary message. Scot said it's a good visit for families with young kids. They have an outdoor rosary made of large boulders and chains. Fr. Rocco said they had an African night at their hall this past week. People came to hear the head of the Africa Social Justice Network come talk about the Africa synod that took place in Rome a few years ago. Different ethnic communities hold pilgrimages to the shrine. Fr. Chris noted the grounds are lit up with Christmas lights each December. Fr. Joe said people like to come because it's a quiet place to pray. Fr. Joe said one of the things that attracts children is that the boulders of rosary have prayers in different languages of the world. They are soon going to start a regular outdoor language and will invite people to come forward and pray the Hail Mary in their own language. Fr. Chris asked what formation of men for the missions is like. Fr. Rocco said they hope the men can deal with diversity in a comfortable way. Working and living overseas can be uncomfortable. In formation he would often send the men to work in parish in ethnic communities very different from their own. They help them to be open and comfortable with people of different faiths, to witness to Christ and to listen to the gifts of the spirit found in people throughout the world. 3rd segment: This week's benefactor card raffle winner is Shirley Bramante from Middleboro. She wins the CD, “The Apostle of the Rosary: Servant of God Fr. Patrick Peyton” and the booklet “The Secret of Mary” by St. Louis de Montfort. If you would like to be eligible to win in an upcoming week, please visit . We'll be announcing the winner each Wednesday during “The Good Catholic Life” program. 4th segment: Scot said Fr. Rocco served many years in Sierra Leone, Africa. Fr. Rocco said he went there as part of his graduate studies. It was a last minute switch from Indonesia. He went back to the States and right after ordination went back for six years. He did some mission work in the remote northern area of Sierra Leone. It is in West Africa near Liberia, about the size of North Caroline. It gained independence in 1961. The “blood diamond” trade has resulted in the exploitations of many people. He eventually became superintendent of schools. He came back in 1984 for 10 years and then went back, this time in the middle of a war. Charles Taylor of Liberia was trying to annex a portion of Sierra Leone that was rich in diamonds. For 10 years, Liberian-backed insurgents wreaked havoc in the country. Fr. Rocco became a staff member of the bishops' conference that covered Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Gambia. He did a lot of work in conflict resolution and was also a national youth minister. Scot noted Fr. Rocco was shot in the course of his missionary work. He had been working with youth to empower them to reach out on a peer level. Many of these youths were being enticed into the ranks of the soldiers. As their pastoral center was being looted one day in 1988, Fr. Rocco engaged a conversation with one of these children looters. He went away and came back drunk, demanding money and other goods. He shot near him without trying to hit Fr. Rocco, but did hit him in the thigh. The 100 kids were later rounded up by the army and they were all shot. Scot asked what percentage of Sierra Leone is Catholic. Fr. Rocco said the number of Catholics has increased because the Church staged during the dark days of the world. At the time, 10 percent were Christian, half of them Catholic. About 30% Muslim, and the rest animists. Fr. Chris asked about the culture. Fr. Rocco said there is no privacy. It is important to greet everyone or risk offending them. He said he couldn't walk between the high school and the church without it taking three times as long as it should. Fr. Joe's primary service overseas was in Taiwan. Fr. Joe said he spent 13 years in Taiwan. He learned the language and culture in three years and had active ministry for 10 years. He said you need a musical ear and a good memory to learn the language. He gave examples of how difficult it would be. He did find that when he arrived in the country he felt at home. His teachers were very understanding and solicitous almost too a fault. They were always very positive and affirming. For three years they studied Chinese for three hours per day, then the bishop of Taipei asked him to be part of the diocesan youth office. Ninety-five percent of high school and college students coming to diocesan youth programs were non-Catholic. They felt attracted to the values of the Gospel. The goal was to show that God created them for something special. The Chinese culture emphasizes taking care of yourself and working hard. He found the youth to be extremely generous with time and talents. The students would be in school from 7:30 am to 4:30pm. Then from 5:30pm to 9:30pm they go to remedial school to review the topics of the day. They are preparing for then end of high school exams which were a lot of pressure. So they do their homework until midnight and get up at 5 or 6 pm. Yet, when there were programs, they were always willing to come out. Fr. Chris asked if the government was supportive. Fr. Joe said it was much like in the US, where you could do anything that's allowable within the law. That contrasts with China where you have to be much more attentive. In mainland China, they work mostly with disabled children and adults. He said about 60 million people have disabilities in China. Fr. Rocco said a high percentage of people in the developing world are under the age of 15. In the majority of countries they work in, the majority of people are young people. He said there are about 800 Xaverian Missionaries. They have about 80 men in formation. Fr. Chris about the Taiwanese culture. Fr. Joe said the Chinese are very curious. People have no compunction about looking into places that we would see as private, or asking questions, but you learn that it is a kindness because they want to know you better in order to serve you better or give you a better gifts. They are also very superstitious, especially about numbers. They are also very generous. Scot said they have a program in Holliston called Global Youth Mission. Fr. Rocco said for the past 10 or 15 years they have been looking at ways to reach out to young people. The order initiated the outreach to empower youth to be active in the Church, to help them link with young people overseas. They are also working with the Office of Cultural Diversity to connect with youth immigrants from Africa and Asia to help them connect with the Church locally. Fr. Rocco said they have information on their general website and still working on a specific website for the initiative.
